John McCain Stuck on Stupid: Defends DADT

IT’S NOT THE POLICY, IT’S NOT THE POLICY, IT’S NOT THE POLICY!”

Senator JOHN McCain’s defense of DADT gets stuck in a groove.  He denies the military seeks out soldiers orientation despite testimony before his committee.

Tuesday, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on a defense authorization measure which included an amendment to gradually repeal Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell

Watch as journalist Kerry Eleveld  from The Advocate and Metro Weekly’s Chris Geidner questions Senator McCain on DADT policy.

Naturally, Lindsey Graham is in favor of DADT…   Arizona, he’s your Senator.

In the wake of the DADT repeal vote, who left the message “All f-ggots must die” on top gay blogger Joe. My. God.’s Web site? The sender appears to have a Senate I.P. address.

And it turns out the office of Senator Saxby Chambliss is investigating whether it was one of his staffers.

Not for the first time, I find myself seeing the Democrats’ strategy to be as clear as mud. From what I can tell, they wanted the Republicans to filibuster the Defense Appropriations Act. What do I base this on? Partly it is the fact that the White House didn’t put on a full-court press to get it passed. A bigger signal is that the Democrats didn’t come out swinging that the GOP was endangering the troops. And then there is this:

After [her] call [with vice-president Joe Biden], [Sen. Susan] Collins went to the Senate floor to plead with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid one last time for what she calls an open process that allows her colleagues to offer amendments to change the bill. A spokesman for Reid made clear to us, no deal. Democrats insist Republicans will in fact have ample opportunity to offer amendments – after the election.
Now let me be clear about something. Sen. Collins was being completely disingenuous. She found an easy excuse to vote against both the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and The DREAM Act by complaining about procedure. She is more guilty than the Democrats of allowing policy she supports to die for cynical partisan purposes. All she had to do is vote her conscience and those policies would be law. The White House merely called her bluff. They couldn’t convince her to buck her party, but that was no reason to cave to her demands.

Senate fails in attempt to repeal ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’

    Washington Post Staff Writers

Senate Republicans dealt a severe and potentially fatal blow Tuesday to efforts this year to repeal the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, which bans gay men and women from serving openly in the armed forces.

Democrats were unable to sway a single Republican to begin debate on a defense authorization bill that included the repeal.

The failure to repeal the law, despite White House backing and majorities in Congress, marked a low point in the more than decade-long effort to rid a policy begun under President Bill Clinton. Democrats thought this was their best chance to undo the 17-year-old measure after President Obama had won the support of Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and other military leaders to get rid of it.

Did you hear this fool? It’s not the policy. This is what happens when folks like McGrandpa are allowed to stay in our government forever and a day. Old guards, who don’t want to give up their post or their ways of thinking. Of course this is a politcal manuever as well.
