Sleigh Ride” is a popular light orchestral piece composed by Leroy Anderson. The composer had the original idea for the piece during a heat wave in July 1946; he finished the work in February 1948. Lyrics, about a person who would like to ride in a sleigh on a winter’s day with another person, were written by Mitchell Parish in 1950. The orchestral version was first recorded in 1949 by Arthur Fiedler and The Boston Pops Orchestra. The song was a hit record on RCA Victor Red Seal 49-0515 (45 rpm) / 10-1484 (78 rpm), and has become the equivalent of a signature song for the orchestra. The 45 rpm version was originally issued on red vinyl. This original mono version has never been available on CD, although the later 1959 re-recording is available in stereo. The orchestra has also recorded the song with John Williams, their conductor from 1979 to 1995, and Keith Lockhart, their current conductor.

  3. Tea Party Nation President Wants ‘Superstar’ Sarah Palin For RNC Chair

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/06/tea-party-sarah-palin-rnc_n_792486.html

Tea Party Nation president Judson Phillips has written a plea to Sarah Palin and supporters Monday, urging the former Alaska governor to mount a bid to take over for the floundering Michael Steele as chair of the Republican National Committee.

Here’s how he described the stakes and the need for Palin to combat “Obama and the socialists” and ensure the conservative direction of the RNC:

We are in a fight for the survival of our country. […]
We need you as Chairman of the RNC. You have shown in the past no hesitation to take on the establishment. You did it in Alaska. If we end up with establishment control of the GOP and their support for an establishment candidate in 2012, Obama and the socialists will have won. An establishment candidate will not work to repeal Obamacare and the other programs Obama, Pelosi and Reid have put in place. We need someone who will put conservatives in control of the party apparatus, not RINOs. […]

Finally, you are a superstar. You have an unbelievable ability to light up a crowd and to raise money. Both of which the Republican Party needs. Something is really wrong with the GOP when the RNC cannot fund a get out the vote campaign for mid-term elections. The GOP needs a conservative who can raise money and energize the troops. You are the only one out there with these unique talents.

  9. John Roberts Reportedly Leaving CNN’s ‘American Morning’

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/john-roberts-leaving-cnns_n_792977.html

John Roberts will step down as co-anchor of CNN’s “American Morning” in the new year, the New York Post is reporting. The paper writes that Roberts will shift to a role as national correspondent based out of Atlanta, where his fiancee, CNN daytime anchor Kyra Phillips, lives.

The move is part of a shakeup under new president Ken Jautz. “American Morning” has long struggled in the ratings, and if Roberts leaves, it would be the second major shakeup for the show in four years–the last coming when Roberts and co-host Kiran Chetry replaced Miles and Soledad O’Brien. The Post reports that some are speculating that T.J. Holmes, another daytime anchor, will take Roberts’ place.

In addition, the Post says Tony Harris, who anchors the 11 to 1 PM slot on weekdays, will leave CNN at the end of December.

  10. ASSANGE ARRESTED

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/12/07/julian-assange-arrested-w_n_792956.html

LONDON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange surrendered to London police Tuesday to face a Swedish arrest warrant, the latest blow to an organization that faces legal, financial and technological challenges after releasing hundreds of secret U.S. diplomatic cables.

Assange was at Westminster Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday afternoon, waiting to attend a hearing. His Swedish lawyer told The Associated Press his client would challenge any extradition from Britain to Sweden.

If that is the case, Assange will likely be remanded into U.K. custody or released on bail until another judge rules on whether to extradite him, a spokeswoman for the extradition department said on customary condition of anonymity.

Assange, a 39-year-old Australian, has been accused by two women in Sweden. He faces rape and sexual molestation allegations in one case and sexual molestation and unlawful coercion in the other. Assange denies the allegations.

His British attorney Mark Stephens says the allegations stem from a “dispute over consensual but unprotected sex” last summer.

Swedish prosecutor Marianne Ny has rejected claims by Stephens and Assange that the prosecution has political overtones. She planned to comment on the arrest later Tuesday.

Borders to Buy Barnes and Noble?

Borders may buy Barnes and Noble—although, tellingly, the news was overshadowed by the opening of Google’s online bookstore Monday. A major shareholder at Borders is proposing to help finance a takeover of its much larger rival, Barnes and Noble. Merging into a giant bookseller would help the companies save money through economies of scale. The shareholder is offering to finance a bid at $16 a share.

Obama: On the way to a failed presidency?
    By Katrina vanden Heuvel
    Tuesday, December 7, 2010

Ronald Reagan famously quipped that the Democratic Party left him before he left the party. Like many progressive supporters of Barack Obama, I’m beginning to have the same feeling about this president.

Consider what we’ve seen since the shellacking Democrats took in the fall elections.

On Afghanistan, the administration has intimated that the 2011 pullout date is “inoperable,” with the White House talking 2014 and Gen. David H. Petraeus suggesting decades of occupation. On bipartisanship, the president seems to think that cooperation requires self-abasement. He apologized to the obstructionist Republican leadership for not reaching out, a gesture reciprocated with another poke in the eye. He chose to meet with the hyper-partisan Chamber of Commerce after it ran one of the most dishonest independent campaigns in memory. He appears to be courting Roger Altman, a former investment banker, for his economic team, leavening the Goldman Sachs flavor of his administration with a salty Lehman Brothers veteran.
