Santa Baby” was originally recorded by Eartha Kitt with Heri René and his orchestra in New York city on October 6, 1953. It was released by RCA Victor Records as catalog number 20-5502 (in USA)[3] and by EMI on the His Master’s Voice as catalog numer B 10728. The song was a huge hit for Kitt, and she later said that it was one of her favorite songs to record. A sequel, “This Year’s Santa Baby”, was recorded by Kitt in 1954, to no commercial success; Kitt also reprised the original song in a 1963 re-recording for Kapp Records, with a more uptempo arrangement. (Madonna‘s popular rendition for the 1987 charity album A Very Special Christmas is based on this latter version.) The song was featured in the 1989 film Driving Miss Daisy.

Breaking News Alert: Obama administration readies order on indefinite detention
    December 21, 2010 5:33:14 PM
    —————————————-

The Obama administration is preparing an executive order that would formalize indefinite detention without trial for some detainees at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, but allow those detainees and their lawyers to challenge the basis for continued incarceration, U.S. officials said.

Under the system established by the previous administration, Guantanamo detainees could go before military review panels with “personal representatives,” military officers who could explain the process but not act as lawyers. The system envisioned under the executive order now being finalized would be more adversarial and would allow detainees to challenge their incarceration periodically, possibly every year.

White House Correspondent Suggests Shootout Between Michelle Obama And Sarah Palin. Yes, Really.
    by Mark Joyella | 12:48 pm, December 21st, 2010

CBS’ Chief White House Correspondent Bill Plante has a pretty wild idea for a new reality show: get Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama, give ‘em both guns and send ‘em to twenty paces. Yep, a Mama Grizzy-FLOTUS “shootout.”

The odd suggestion–which probably won’t get a warm reception inside the White House–came at the end of Plante’s report this morning on the Palin’s criticism of Mrs. Obama’s healthy eating initiative, which Palin sees as an effort to tell parents how to raise their children.

Plante makes mention of Palin’s (admittedly debatable) shooting skills demonstrated recently on her Sarah Palin’s Alaska reality show, and then Plante offers his strange twist on the one-sided food feud: a kind of live ammo Political Survivor:

      • Bill Plante…you lowdown mofo. Don’t start none and it won’t be none. That white bitchass Palin better shut the fuck up and keep her mouth off of Michelle. Got damn hillbilly trash.

Truly, one of the funnest things you can do when you’re in the South is get into an argument over why the Confederate states seceded from the United States. You don’t have to talk to some poor dumbass cracker (note: It’s not racist because the Rude Pundit’s got poor dumbass cracker friends). Oh, no, you can talk to your average, middle class redneck who seems perfectly logical, if conservative, on many issues. And he’ll get all huffy, spitting about states’ rights and taxation and tariffs and other such bullshit. Remember: you are doing this for your amusement, so don’t get upset. Merely say, “And you’re telling me that the Civil War would have happened even if there wasn’t slavery in the South?” Because it wouldn’t have. No way, no how. It was about slavery.

GOP obstruction made START a White House win
    By Adam Serwer

Politico’s Laura Rozen and Josh Gerstein report that despite the frivolous obstruction of Republicans in the Senate, New START looks poised for ratification. That has Republicans grumbling about President Obama’s success in the lame duck session. Here’s Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell:

“Our top concerns should be the safety and security of Americans, not some politician’s desire to declare a political victory and host a press conference before the first of the year…. Americans have had more than enough of artificial timelines set by politicians eager for attention. They want us to focus on their concerns, not ours…. It is unfortunate that something as important as the Senate’s consideration of a treaty like this one was truncated in order to meet another arbitrary deadline or the wish list of the liberal base.”

The treaty was signed in April and is 17 pages long — hardly a tough slog for a U.S. senator and a staff of experts. McConnell’s comments about New START being part of the “wish list for the liberal base” are absurd. Let’s take a moment to reflect on how extending a treaty first negotiated by President Ronald Reagan and signed by President George H.W. Bush suddenly became a liberal triumph.

Ratifying START will ensure that the U.S. can monitor Russia’s nuclear stockpile, preserve the reset in relations and show the world that Obama still has juice at home — but, before now, strategic arms reduction wasn’t considered an exclusively “liberal” policy goal, and it probably shouldn’t be.

Early in the Obama administration, Senate Republicans settled on a strategy of total procedural obstruction. That strategy worked in the sense that it turned the most mundane processes of government into bitter fights — before the Obama administration, Congress had never failed to extend unemployment insurance when unemployment was above seven percent.

The problem is, the New START treaty is about as controversial as a tuna salad sandwich. Not only has the current military leadership and every living Republican Secretary of State endorsed it, but former Republican national security stalwarts such as Brent Scowcroft are “baffled” by the GOP’s decision to obstruct ratification. New START is also popular — a CNN poll from November shows three quarters of Americans support ratifying the treaty.

If New START is ratified, the only reason it’ll be considered an Obama victory is because Republicans decided to oppose it without any real reason for doing so. If the Senate had simply ratified the treaty without any fuss, Obama might have gotten a few days of positive press, but it wouldn’t have been treated as a major political success. Because Senate Republicans turned ratification into a huge partisan brawl, a Democratic president renewing an agreement with Russia designed by Republican presidents now looks like a massive victory for the administration.

Republicans have only themselves to blame here. If they had been more focused on the substance of New START, and less worried about humiliating the president or instinctively rejecting anything he proposes, the White House wouldn’t have anything to brag about.

Attempting to make sense of McCain’s positions on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, the START treaty, and the DREAM Act, Matthews hosted MSNBC political analysts Richard Wolffe and Michelle Bernard.

“I don’t know how you define John McCain any longer,” Bernard said, baffled over McCain’s apparent change of heart in a mere two-year span.

“Here’s a guy who taunted Candidate Obama in 2008 saying, you’ve never bucked your party, you’ve never stood up to your own party,” Wolffe said. “What’s he doing now? He’s the party line guy!”

“He has gone so far right, if you look at him, he has become his former Vice Presidential nominee,” Bernard said. “He has become the male version of Sarah Palin.”

Mayer Brown lawyer uses ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ to teach Iraqi lawyers
When Matt Rooney was asked to teach a course on trial skills, he turned to one of his favorite legal movies. But would “To Kill a Mockingbird” resonate as a teaching tool in Iraq?

Rooney, a partner at the Mayer Brown law firm, went to Iraq in October as a volunteer for Heartland Alliance, a Chicago-based human rights group. As part of its mission, the nonprofit works to improve legal protections abroad for vulnerable populations, including victims of gender-based violence, refugees and minors.

In Iraq, Heartland Alliance designed a program to give Iraqi lawyers critical legal skills in criminal cases, but the attorneys still needed help with cross-examining witnesses and closing arguments, said Scott Portman, director of international programs.

Vick Stirs Debate in the M.V.P. VoteBy WILLIAM C. RHODEN
    Published: December 20, 2010

If the N.F.L. season were to end today, who would be the most valuable player? There are two clear choices: New England quarterback Tom Brady and Philadelphia’s Michael Vick

By the thinnest margin of a hard hit along the sideline, my choice is Vick. But it’s close.

Brady is playing as well as ever, but Vick is rocking the league. He is must-see TV.

On Sunday, Brady led the Patriots to a come-from-behind victory over the pesky Green Bay Packers, 31-27. Vick turned in an electrifying performance against the Giants, engineering one of the greatest comebacks in recent memory — a 28-point rally with 8 minutes 17 seconds to play as the Eagles stunned the Giants, 38-31.

F.C.C. Is Set to Regulate Net AccessBy BRIAN STELTER
    Published: December 20, 2010

The Federal Communications Commission appears poised to pass a controversial set of rules that broadly create two classes of Internet access, one for fixed-line providers and the other for the wireless Net.

The proposed rules of the online road would prevent fixed-line broadband providers like Comcast and Qwest from blocking access to sites and applications. The rules, however, would allow wireless companies more latitude in putting limits on access to services and applications.

Before a vote set for Tuesday, two Democratic commissioners said Monday that they would back the rules proposed by the F.C.C. chairman, Julius Genachowski, which try to satisfy both sides in the protracted debate over so-called network neutrality. But analysts said the debate would soon resume in the courts, as challenges to the rules are expected in the months to come.

Net neutrality, broadly speaking, is an effort to ensure equal access to Web sites and cutting-edge online services. Mr. Genachowski said these proposed rules aimed to both encourage Internet innovation and protect consumers from abuses.

Dems reach magic number on arms treaty as GOP support builds
By Alexander Bolton – 12/20/10 06:47 PM ET
Senate Democrats appear to have the nine Republican votes they need to ratify the New START nuclear treaty this week and give President Obama his third major victory of the lame-duck session.

Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.) told reporters Monday afternoon that he would vote to ratify the treaty and also support a motion to end debate, which the Senate will consider Tuesday.

“I believe it’s something that’s important for our country and I believe it’s a good move forward,” Brown said after emerging from a classified briefing in the Old Senate Chamber.

Finally, victory on ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’

    By Eugene Robinson

President Obama must be tempted to respond to his progressive critics with a quote from the old-school rapper Kool Moe Dee: “How ya like me now?”

Repeal of the military’s bigoted and anachronistic “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military – a campaign promise that seemed to be slipping out of reach – doesn’t fully mend the relationship between Obama and the Democratic Party’s liberal wing. But it’s a pretty terrific start.

Two civil rights organizations are seeking a federal review of public school education in Texas, accusing state school administrators of violating federal civil rights laws after curriculum changes approved earlier this year by the Texas Board of Education.

The request to the U.S. Department of Education made by the Texas NAACP and Texas League of United Latin American Citizens on Monday contended that the curriculum changes passed in May “were made with the intention to discriminate” and would have a “stigmatizing impact” on African-American and Latino students.

“The State of Texas is failing to provide many of its minority students with equal educational opportunities,” documents sent to the federal department said.

The Most Shocking Textbook Changes Passed By State School Board

      http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/13/texas-textbook-massacre-u_n_498003.html#s73765

AUSTIN, Texas – A far-right faction of the Texas State Board of Education succeeded Friday in injecting conservative ideals into social studies, history and economics lessons that will be taught to millions of students for the next decade.

The Board removed Thomas Jefferson from the Texas curriculum’s world history standards on Enlightenment thinking, “replacing him with religious right icon John Calvin.”

From the Texas Freedom Network’s live-blog of the board hearing:

Board member Cynthia Dunbar wants to change a standard having students study the impact of Enlightenment ideas on political revolutions from 1750 to the present. She wants to drop the reference to Enlightenment ideas (replacing with “the writings of”) and to Thomas Jefferson. She adds Thomas Aquinas and others. Jefferson’s ideas, she argues, were based on other political philosophers listed in the standards. We don’t buy her argument at all. Board member Bob Craig of Lubbock points out that the curriculum writers clearly wanted to students to study Enlightenment ideas and Jefferson. Could Dunbar’s problem be that Jefferson was a Deist? The board approves the amendment, taking Thomas Jefferson OUT of the world history standards.

We’re just picking ourselves up off the floor. The board’s far-right faction has spent months now proclaiming the importance of emphasizing America’s exceptionalism in social studies classrooms. But today they voted to remove one of the greatest of America’s Founders, Thomas Jefferson, from a standard about the influence of great political philosophers on political revolutions from 1750 to today.
