Last week, for the second time in his presidency, Barack Obama heard those footsteps, jumped up to grasp a historic opportunity … and missed it completely.
In Bismarck’s case it was not so much God’s coattails he caught as the revolutionary wave of mid-19th-century German nationalism. And he did more than catch it; he managed to surf it in a direction of his own choosing. The wave Obama just missed—again—is the revolutionary wave of Middle Eastern democracy. It has surged through the region twice since he was elected: once in Iran in the summer of 2009, the second time right across North Africa, from Tunisia all the way down the Red Sea to Yemen. But the swell has been biggest in Egypt, the Middle East’s most populous country.

Poll: Obama gets high marks for handling of Egypt crisis

WASHINGTON — Americans are modestly optimistic that the upheaval in Egypt will increase the chances for an enduring peace in the Mideast, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds, though there is also concern about the potential consequences of the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
Those surveyed give President Obama high marks for his handling of the unfolding situation. By more than 2 to 1, 66%-28%, they credit him with doing a good or very good job.
“It offers an opportunity as well as a challenge,” Obama told reporters at a news conference Tuesday. “I think the opportunity is that, when you have the kinds of young people who were in Tahrir Square, feeling that they have hope and they have opportunity, then they’re less likely to channel all their frustrations into anti-Israeli sentiment or anti-Western sentiment, because they see the prospect of building their own country. That’s a positive. …
“The challenge is that, you know, democracy is messy.”

David Plouffe to Bloggers: Obama’s Deep, Drastic Budget Cuts Necessary To ‘Win The Future And Grow The Economy’

A conference call with Congressional Budget Office spokesman Ken Baer and White House adviser David Plouffe tonight was probably aimed at growing indignation in the blogosphere over the proposed Obama budget, which features your proverbial draconian cuts to just about every social program — except Social Security and Medicare.
It’s good that the administration is engaging in these calls because we get to hear more details about their budget instead of the usual MSM drone, but I’m not sure that bloggers are happy with the overall conversation since once we got into the details of arguing different cuts, it looked as though we were buying into the White House frame that the cuts were urgently needed in the first place, and many of us don’t believe that’s true.

Baer’s opening remarks focused on “shared sacrifice.”
My question: “When you’re talking about shared sacrifice, clearly, the working and middle class is getting a disproportionate slam everywhere they turn with this budget, and you’re talking about a few, what sound like token items to the rest of us out here, and I wonder how you rationalize that during this severe economic recession.”

When members of the jury return today to decide whether Shawna Forde deserves the death penalty, they won’t be alone.
The story of the beautician who founded a border militia group then orchestrated a deadly robbery with the hope that anticipated spoils of dope and money could help fund her border-watch endeavor, has made the Forde trial one of Tucson’s most-followed trials.
Forde, who was convicted Monday of killing an Arivaca man and his daughter, has gained more and more attention not only from the national media, but from talk radio and people on both sides of the immigration debate.
Reporters from the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times drifted in and out of the trial, as did representatives of National Public Radio, The Daily Beast, NBC’s “Dateline” and various online publications and blogs – one from as far away as Detroit.
Forde’s supporters have gone on The Dutch Joens radio show lamenting what they see as a politically-motivated witch hunt; members of Latino organizations have written news releases praising the prosecution.

The GOP loves freedom, but not for Egypt

Why don’t conservatives love freedom?
Judging by last week’s Conservative Political Action Conference, that’s a fair question. As Egyptians overthrew the three-decade rule of Hosni Mubarak, politicians who spoke at the annual CPAC gabfest in Washington ranged from silent to grumpy on the subject.
Mitt Romney, perhaps the leading Republican presidential contender, gave a speech without once mentioning the upheaval in Cairo that may signal the most important geopolitical shift since the end of the Cold War. You’d think that anyone who wanted to be president would be paying attention and might have an opinion or two.
Sen. John Thune of South Dakota, also believed to be considering a presidential run, likewise seemed not to have noticed that the world was changing. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty confined himself to criticizing President Obama for somehow appeasing “Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.” Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who won the CPAC presidential straw poll, was at least forthright: He said the United States has no “moral responsibility to spread our goodness around the world” and urged the administration “to do a lot less a lot sooner, not only in Egypt but around the world.”
