Joe Paterno Fired Amid Jerry Sandusky’s Sex Scandal: Penn State Students Riot

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against a former assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season, but the outcry following the arrest of former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

It’s got damn atrocious folks closed their eyes to Jerry Sandusky raping children. How, pray tell, could they sleep at night? What is unbelieveable is students rioting to support someone who closed his eyes to the sexual molestation of children. Heads needs to roll from the top down! All involved in the cover up are cowards with no morals, no conscience, no soul!

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno has a treatable form of lung cancer, according to his son.

Scott Paterno said in a statement provided to The Associated Press by a family representative on Friday that the 84-year-old Joe Paterno is undergoing treatment and that “his doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”

“As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment,” Scott Paterno said in a brief statement.

Scott Paterno said the diagnosis was made during a follow-up visit last weekend for a bronchial illness.

  2. State College police: McQueary didn’t report abuse to us

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The State College police chief said Wednesday that former Penn State graduate assistant Mike McQueary never reported allegations of child sex abuse against Jerry Sandusky to the department.

“Absolutely not,” State College Police Chief Tom King told NBC News when asked if McQueary had ever come to them with allegations concerning Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team.

“We don’t have any records of him coming to us,” King said.

McQueary, now an assistant football coach, wrote in a Nov. 8 email to a friend that he stopped an alleged sexual assault by Sandusky on a 10-year-old boy in 2002 and discussed it with police afterward.

  3. More Accusations Surface in Penn State Abuse Case

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Close to 10 additional suspected victims have come forward to the authorities since the arrest of the former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky on Nov. 5 on 40 counts of sexually abusing young boys, according to people close to the investigation. The police are working to confirm the new allegations.

The news of additional accusations came on a day when Sandusky made his first extended public comments since his arrest, and the resignation of the chief executive of the Second Mile foundation, the charity founded by Sandusky, was made public. They were the latest developments in a case that has led to the ouster of several top university officials, including the football coach, Joe Paterno, and the president, Graham B. Spanier.

  4. OMFG! Oh My Sweet Jesus. If it is found to be true that young boys were pimped out to rich donors, that is wickedness beyond belief. Let everyone who covered it up rot in prison and shut the mofo down including Penn State Football. Whew Lawd…this is too wicked! Just too much…

  5. Penn State Scandal: Leslie Dutchcot, Judge Who Granted Jerry Sandusky Bail, Is Second Mile Volunteer

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/14/penn-state-scandal-judge-sandusky-volunteer-second-mile_n_1091461.html

During the week since the sordid accusations of sexual abuse — and a potential cover up — at Penn State first became public, there has been a constant flood of new information and allegations.

Not only has the number of alleged victims of former PSU defensive coach Jerry Sandusky potentially risen from the eight cited in the 23-page grand jury report but many suspect that several people on the Penn State coaching staff were aware of these alleged crimes as far back as 1998. The latest revelation comes from Deadspin, as they have discovered that the judge who ordered Sandusky be freed on $100,000 unsecured bail is a volunteer for the ex-coach’s foundation called Second Mile. Judge Leslie Dutchcot’s order meant that Sandusky wouldn’t have to post any money unless he didn’t show up for court.

Her Goodall & Yurchak profile shows that she volunteers for the American Heart Association, The Second Mile and Centre County PAWS.

Late last week, after SportsByBrooks posted ominous tweets of a new horrifying detail about the scandal soon to be reported, Pittsburgh radio host Mark Madden revealed a shocking rumor that Sandusky and his foundation were “pimping” out young boys to rich donors. Madden claimed this story is being investigated by two “prominent columnists.”

On Friday, Sara Ganim of the Patriot News outlined all of the missed opportunities to investigate Sandusky dating all the way back to 1995. At the end of her article, she writes that only two things are certain: “Many of the accounts in this tragic and tangled history conflict with one another. And everyone cannot be telling the truth.”

Among those who could have taken action against Sandusky was district attorney Ray Gricar. However, the Center County DA went missing in 2005. His whereabouts — dead or alive — remain unknown.

If the previous week is any indication the there will be likely be as many answers yielded as new questions raised as the weeks and months unfold.

Grand Jury Report In Sandusky Case

    • How could a university remain silent & turn it’s back on so many children being molested after countless witnesses saw Sandurky either fondling or having sex with little boys? What is the reason? Was it the children’s blackness? And why is this mofo out on bail?

      • Boys in Penn State Molestation Scandal May Have Been Black

        http://www.eurweb.com/2011/11/boys-in-penn-state-molestation-scandal-may-have-been-black/

Jerry Sandusky, former football assistant to Nittany Lion’s head coach Joe Paterno, was obviously someone who was trusted at Pennsylvania State University. He founded the Second Mile Foundation, a group home for troubled boys, in 1977, which serves over 100,000 at risk youth.

But Sandusky was arrested and led away in handcuffs last week in a child sex-abuse scandal that has rocked Pennsylvania State University and sparked a grand jury indictment over an alleged cover up.

The national scandal has also resulted in the firings of Lion’s head coach Joe Paterno, Penn State’s beloved head coach, as well as Pennsylvania State’s university president and two top administrators.

A Special Commonwealth Pennsylvania grand jury described in findings that Sandusky was a relentless sexual predator who took advantage of at-risk children and their disadvantaged single parents.

The case was broken by one of Sandusky’s victims, cited as “Victim Number 1” who reported Sandusky to authorities.

Reports are also leaking out that the eight victims may have been poor inner city black boys.

Edward Wyckoff Williams, a columnist for the Grio, points out that many sex abuse cases in recent years have involved high profile leaders and victims of sexual abuse, who have been young black males.

Within the grand jury’s findings was an incident in 2002, when assistant coach Mike McQueary, the team’s wide receiver coach, witnessed Sandusky allegedly raping a boy, estimated to be about 10 years old, in the shower of Penn State’s locker room.

  10. Penn State Scandal: Timeline of sex abuse scandal that has rocked Happy Valley

Sandusky begins coaching career at PSU in 1969

1969: Jerry Sandusky begins his coaching career at Penn State University as defensive line coach.

1977: Sandusky founds The Second Mile, a charitable organization designed to help at-risk boys in the State College, Pa. region. Second Mile’s website says that over 100,000 boys and girls from all Pennsylvania counties participate in the organization’s programs annually. Sandusky is also promoted to Penn State’s defensive coordinator that same year.

Jan. 1, 1983: Penn State beats Georgia, 27-23, in Sugar Bowl for Joe Paterno’s first national title; Sandusky is team’s defensive coordinator.

Jan. 2, 1987: Penn State defeats Miami, 14-10, in Fiesta Bowl for Paterno’s second national title; Sandusky is team’s defensive coordinator.

1994: Boy known as Victim 7 in the grand jury presentment released last weekend meets Sandusky through Second Mile at “about the age of 10,” according to grand jury testimony.

1996-98: Boy known as Victim 5 in grand jury presentment is taken to the locker rooms and showers at Penn State by Sandusky when he is 8 to 10 years old, according to grand jury testimony.

1998: Boy known as Victim 6 in grand jury presentment is taken into the locker rooms and showers when he is 11 years old and showers with Sandusky, according to grand jury testimony. Sandusky lathers up boy and says, “I’m going to squeeze your guts out.” When Victim 6 is dropped off at his home, he tells his mother of the incident and she reports the information to university police, who investigate. Investigators eavesdrop on two conversations between the mother and Sandusky, and after one conversation, Sandusky asks for forgiveness, even telling the mother, “I wish I were dead.” Then Centre County district attorney Ray Gricar ultimately says no charges will be filed against Sandusky.

Summer 1999: Sandusky announces he will retire from Penn State at the end of the season. He will have emeritus status, maintain an office on campus and have access to all Penn State facilities.

Dec. 28, 1999: Boy known as Victim 4, is part of Sandusky’s family party for the 1999 Alamo Bowl in Texas, according to grand jury report.

Fall 2000: According to grand jury report, Penn State janitor named Jim Calhoun observes Sandusky in university’s Lasch Football Building showers with a young boy, Victim 8, pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. He informs janitorial staff members. Employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and witnesses Sandusky and the boy, whom he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13, exit holding hands. Calhoun, a temporary employee, never reports incident.

March 1, 2002: According to grand jury report, Penn State graduate assistant Mike McQueary enters the locker room at the Lasch Football Building. He witnesses Sandusky performing anal sex on boy, known as Victim 2, whose age he estimates at 10. McQueary tells his father, who advises him to tell Paterno. McQueary meets with Paterno the following morning.

March 3, 2002: According to the grand jury, Paterno calls Penn State athletic director Tim Curley, and tells Curley what he was told by McQueary. Paterno’s version is that McQueary had seen Sandusky “fondling or doing something of a sexual nature.” Later that month, McQueary meets with Curley and senior vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz. McQueary says he believes he witnessed Sandusky having anal sex. Curley and Schultz never report the incident to authorities.

April 15, 2005: Gricar, the Centre County DA, disappears after a trip to Lewisburg, Pa. His car is later found parked in a lot and his computer and hard drive are found in the Susquehanna River. The twice-divorced Gricar, 59, is never seen or heard from again. “It’s literally a mystery,” Bellefonte Borough Police Chief Shawn Weaver tells the Daily News in 2011. “The man vanished, period. No human trace has been found. There’s only one of three things that could have happened to him — a suicide, homicide or he just walked away.”

2007: According to the grand jury report, during the 2007 track season, Sandusky begins spending time with boy known as Victim 1. Victim 1 stays overnight at Sandusky’s home, and later testifies that Sandusky performs oral sex on him multiple times. Sandusky also brings Victim 1 onto PSU campus even though he was barred from bringing boys to the university after alleged 2002 incident.

Spring 2008: Victim 1 terminates contact with Sandusky, while a freshman at a Clinton County high school, according to grand jury report.

2009: Then-Pennsylvania attorney general Tom Corbett begins sexual abuse investigation of Sandusky.

September 2010: Sandusky retires from day-to-day involvement with The Second Mile.

Summer 2011: Lara Gricar, adopted daughter of Ray Gricar, successfully files petition to have her father declared deceased.

Nov. 5, 2011: Sandusky is arrested and released on $100,000 bail after being arraigned on 40 criminal counts. Curley and Schultz are charged with perjury and failure to report the allegations.

Nov. 7, 2011: Pennsylvania attorney general Linda Kelly holds a press conference. She says Paterno is not a target of the investigation. Curley and Schultz surrender on charges and step down from their posts — Curley goes on administrative leave, while Schultz retires. State police chief Frank Noonan says there are “no heroes” in the investigation. Both Kelly and Noonan encourage other victims to come forward.

Nov. 8, 2011: Penn State cancels Paterno’s weekly press conference. Paterno tells reporters, “We’ll try to do it as soon as we can.” Reports swirl that Paterno will be ousted by Board of Trustees.

Nov. 9, 2011: Paterno announces he’ll retire at the end of the season. Late that evening, Board of Trustees votes to oust Paterno and Penn State president Graham Spanier in an announcement made by Board’s vice-chairman John Surma. Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley is named interim head coach. Riots erupt in the streets, as angry students throw rocks, tip over a TV news van and shout support for Paterno.

Nov. 10, 2011: University announces McQueary, a receivers coach with the team, will not be in attendance for Nov. 12 home game against Nebraska, due to threats the State College native has received.

Nov. 11, 2011: McQueary is placed on administrative leave.

Nov. 12, 2011: Despite late comeback, Penn State falls to Nebraska, 17-14, in first game since scandal hits.

  11. Former Coach Accused Of Child Rape Had Access To Hundreds Of Kids Through His Charity

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/11/12/penn-state-scandal-sandusky_n_1090203.html

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Over the past 30 years, politicians, sports stars and community leaders heaped praise on Jerry Sandusky and the charity he founded for troubled youngsters, The Second Mile. It was a model program, and the acclaimed football coach was its driving force.

Now, prosecutors say that very success enabled Sandusky to find boys and sexually assault them.

Sandusky, 67, was charged last weekend with molesting eight boys over a 15-year period in a scandal that rocked the Penn State campus and brought down the university’s beloved football coach, Joe Paterno.

In the aftermath, some are wondering if The Second Mile can survive amid questions about its role in the alleged cover-up.

Sandusky was a star assistant coach at Penn State from the 1970s to the 1990s, and many assumed he would lead the team one day, or even head to pro football. He founded The Second Mile in 1977 for youngsters from broken homes and troubled backgrounds, building it into an organization that helped as many as 100,000 children a year through camps and fundraisers.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/jerry-sandusky-allegations-san-antonio-police-look-into-alamo-bowl-report-111111

    SAN ANTONIO, Texas
Police in San Antonio, Texas, are investigating the possibility of building a criminal case against Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky over an alleged offense during a team visit 12 years ago, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Sandusky, who is charged with molesting eight boys in a scandal that has rocked college football, is accused of making advances on a minor while staying in San Antonio in 1999 for the Alamo Bowl.

“We are investigating the possibility that an offense may have happened while here in San Antonio,” police spokesman Sgt. Chris Benavides, said in a statement Thursday.

The indictment issued against Sandusky by a Pennsylvania grand jury included claims that Sandusky made advances toward a teenager, referred in the indictment as “Victim 4,” who was listed — along with Sandusky’s wife — as a member of the coach’s family party during the 1999 visit.

The indictment claims “Sandusky did threaten to send him home from the Alamo Bowl in Texas when Victim 4 resisted his advances.”

“Victim 4,” now 27, said he met Sandusky around 13 years ago through The Second Mile, the charity the coach established for troubled boys. He also claims to have been abused several times on the Penn State campus and in hotel rooms in Pennsylvania.

    http://msn.foxsports.com/collegefootball/story/Penn-State-places-assistant-coach-Mike-McQueary-on-administrative-leave-in-wake-of-chid-sex-abuse-scandal-111111

Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary, a key witness in the child sex-abuse scandal that has engulfed the school, has been placed on administrative leave.

School president Rod Erickson announced the move Friday, a day after the school said McQueary would not be present when the Nittany Lions play Nebraska on Saturday because he has received threats.

McQueary testified in a grand jury investigation that eventually led to child sex-abuse charges being filed against former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. The ensuing scandal brought down longtime coach Joe Paterno, who was fired by university trustees amid growing criticism that he should have done more to stop the alleged abuse.

McQueary, who testified that he saw Sandusky sodomizing a boy in the shower in 2002, has endured similar scrutiny. The university’s athletic department released a one-line statement Thursday night saying it would be ”in the best interest of all” if the receivers coach didn’t attend the season’s final home game at Beaver Stadium. The school did not provide details on precisely who threatened McQueary.

”It became clear that coach McQueary could not function in this role under these circumstances,” Erickson said Friday, adding McQueary was told of the decision Friday afternoon.

‘Horrified’ Mother of Penn State Victim Wants ‘Justice’

University Park, Pennsylvania — The mother of one of the alleged sex abuse victims in the Penn State scandal said she was “absolutely horrified” by the developments and wants the perpetrator “to be put away for a long time.”

“I want justice,” the mother said on ABC’s Good Morning America Friday, making reference to Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State coach accused of sexually abusing youths.

“I want him to be locked up. There’s no help for somebody who does this.” Sandusky, who is free on bail, disputes the 23-page grand jury summary of graphic testimony, his attorney said.

Penn State remained embroiled Friday over the child sex abuse that led to the firing of legendary football coach Joe Paterno, with the board of trustees convening and a group of students planning a vigil in support of alleged abuse victims.

The developments come ahead of the team’s last home game of the season Saturday against Nebraska.

The university’s board of trustees plans to meet Friday morning and is expected to discuss creating a special committee to investigate the child rape allegations, which became public last week after a grand jury report on the case was released.

In the evening, a candlelight vigil in support of victims of child abuse will be held at 9:30 p.m.. There will be speakers, including a victim of sex abuse in another case, performances of the Penn State Blue Band, a marching band, and an a cappella group called Nota. There will be a moment of silence when the clock strikes 10 p.m. at the Old Main building on the Penn State campus.

After the Penn State Board of Trustees relieved Joe Paterno of his duties as football coach on Wednesday evening, many wondered if wide receivers coach Mike McQueary would also be dismissed.

According to the grand jury report, McQueary witnessed former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky sexually abuse a young boy in a locker room shower in 2002 when he was returning some recruiting tapes as a graduate assistant. McQueary allegedly left the scene without intervening and informed his father of the scene he observed. He informed Paterno the following morning. The coach took the report to athletic director Tim Curley, but no one ever told the police.

In the span of less than a week, Penn State lost a legendary football coach and a university president. And that’s before taking into the account the money.

At stake? Tens of millions of dollars in profits annually. Penn State raked in $72.7 million in revenue from football last season, ranking fifth out of all college programs in the country, according to CNNMoney. In addition, the school’s Athletic Department, took home another $24.1 million in revenue not designated to a specific team or sport — a sum that came mostly from merchandise sales and sponsorships.

And the program is already taking a hit. Ticket resale prices for Penn State’s upcoming home game against the University of Nebraska had already dropped more than 20 percent by Thursday morning, less than 24 hours after the school’s board of trustees fired Joe Paterno, Penn State’s football coach of 46 years, according to Bloomberg.

Searchers found car, laptop (without hard drive) but never his body

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/45244328/

It is strange that Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar never prosecuted Jerry Sandusky on child-rape charges 13 years ago, some speculate, because Gricar was known for being fiercely independent and hard on crime.

But it is even stranger that we cannot ask Gricar why Sandusky was not put behind bars because the tough-as-nails district attorney disappeared in 2005. And though he was declared dead July of this year, his body has never been found.

“People ask why Ray did not prosecute, and I have no problem saying, because he clearly felt he didn’t have a case for a ‘successful’ prosecution,” Tony Gricar, Ray Gricar’s nephew , told The Patriot-News.

“… One thing I can say is that Ray was beholden to no one, was not a politician.”

Story: Paterno aide engulfed in Penn State abuse case
This district attorney who had “a bitter taste in his mouth for the [Penn State] program, and its coach,” according to his nephew, and yet never prosecuted Sandusky, disappeared on April 15, 2005, after telling his girlfriend that he was going on a drive.

Ray Gricar’s car was found the next day in a Lewisburg parking lot and his laptop, sans hard drive, was found in the Susquehanna River, according to the Patriot-News.

    • OMG! How deep does this scandal go? I’m reading it’s being alleged Sandusky sold boys to wealthy alumni who were also pedophiles. Could it be District Attorney Ray Gricar uncovered the truth and someone made sure he kept quiet forever?
