STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno has a treatable form of lung cancer, according to his son.
Scott Paterno said in a statement provided to The Associated Press by a family representative on Friday that the 84-year-old Joe Paterno is undergoing treatment and that “his doctors are optimistic he will make a full recovery.”
“As everyone can appreciate, this is a deeply personal matter for my parents, and we simply ask that his privacy be respected as he proceeds with treatment,” Scott Paterno said in a brief statement.
Scott Paterno said the diagnosis was made during a follow-up visit last weekend for a bronchial illness.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The State College police chief said Wednesday that former Penn State graduate assistant Mike McQueary never reported allegations of child sex abuse against Jerry Sandusky to the department.
“Absolutely not,” State College Police Chief Tom King told NBC News when asked if McQueary had ever come to them with allegations concerning Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator for the Penn State football team.
“We don’t have any records of him coming to us,” King said.
McQueary, now an assistant football coach, wrote in a Nov. 8 email to a friend that he stopped an alleged sexual assault by Sandusky on a 10-year-old boy in 2002 and discussed it with police afterward.

During the week since the sordid accusations of sexual abuse — and a potential cover up — at Penn State first became public, there has been a constant flood of new information and allegations.
Not only has the number of alleged victims of former PSU defensive coach Jerry Sandusky potentially risen from the eight cited in the 23-page grand jury report but many suspect that several people on the Penn State coaching staff were aware of these alleged crimes as far back as 1998. The latest revelation comes from Deadspin, as they have discovered that the judge who ordered Sandusky be freed on $100,000 unsecured bail is a volunteer for the ex-coach’s foundation called Second Mile. Judge Leslie Dutchcot’s order meant that Sandusky wouldn’t have to post any money unless he didn’t show up for court.

On Friday, Sara Ganim of the Patriot News outlined all of the missed opportunities to investigate Sandusky dating all the way back to 1995. At the end of her article, she writes that only two things are certain: “Many of the accounts in this tragic and tangled history conflict with one another. And everyone cannot be telling the truth.”
Among those who could have taken action against Sandusky was district attorney Ray Gricar. However, the Center County DA went missing in 2005. His whereabouts — dead or alive — remain unknown.

The Board of Directors of The Second Mile says it accepted Dr. Jack Raykovitz’s resignation Sunday.
In a statement the charity says Raykovitz had been CEO of the charity for 28 years. The vice-chairman of the organization, David Woodle, will now be in charge of day-to-day operations.
Second Mile founder Jerry Sandusky is facing multiple child abuse charges. The Second Mile says it will be conducting an internal investigation of its programs.

But Sandusky was arrested and led away in handcuffs last week in a child sex-abuse scandal that has rocked Pennsylvania State University and sparked a grand jury indictment over an alleged cover up.
The national scandal has also resulted in the firings of Lion’s head coach Joe Paterno, Penn State’s beloved head coach, as well as Pennsylvania State’s university president and two top administrators.
A Special Commonwealth Pennsylvania grand jury described in findings that Sandusky was a relentless sexual predator who took advantage of at-risk children and their disadvantaged single parents.
The case was broken by one of Sandusky’s victims, cited as “Victim Number 1” who reported Sandusky to authorities.
Reports are also leaking out that the eight victims may have been poor inner city black boys.
Edward Wyckoff Williams, a columnist for the Grio, points out that many sex abuse cases in recent years have involved high profile leaders and victims of sexual abuse, who have been young black males.
Within the grand jury’s findings was an incident in 2002, when assistant coach Mike McQueary, the team’s wide receiver coach, witnessed Sandusky allegedly raping a boy, estimated to be about 10 years old, in the shower of Penn State’s locker room.

Summer 1999: Sandusky announces he will retire from Penn State at the end of the season. He will have emeritus status, maintain an office on campus and have access to all Penn State facilities.

Fall 2000: According to grand jury report, Penn State janitor named Jim Calhoun observes Sandusky in university’s Lasch Football Building showers with a young boy, Victim 8, pinned up against the wall, performing oral sex on the boy. Employee Ronald Petrosky cleans the showers at Lasch and witnesses Sandusky and the boy, whom he describes as being between the ages of 11 and 13, exit holding hands. Police in San Antonio, Texas, are investigating the possibility of building a criminal case against Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky over an alleged offense during a team visit 12 years ago, the San Antonio Express-News reported.
Sandusky, who is charged with molesting eight boys in a scandal that has rocked college football, is accused of making advances on a minor while staying in San Antonio in 1999 for the Alamo Bowl.
“We are investigating the possibility that an offense may have happened while here in San Antonio,” police spokesman Sgt. Chris Benavides, said in a statement Thursday.
The indictment issued against Sandusky by a Pennsylvania grand jury included claims that Sandusky made advances toward a teenager, referred in the indictment as “Victim 4,” who was listed — along with Sandusky’s wife — as a member of the coach’s family party during the 1999 visit.
The indictment claims “Sandusky did threaten to send him home from the Alamo Bowl in Texas when Victim 4 resisted his advances.”
“Victim 4,” now 27, said he met Sandusky around 13 years ago through The Second Mile, the charity the coach established for troubled boys. He also claims to have been abused several times on the Penn State campus and in hotel rooms in Pennsylvania.

The ensuing scandal brought down longtime coach Joe Paterno, who was fired by university trustees amid growing criticism that he should have done more to stop the alleged abuse.

“I want justice,” the mother said on ABC’s Good Morning America Friday, making reference to Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State coach accused of sexually abusing youths.
“I want him to be locked up. There’s no help for somebody who does this.” Sandusky, who is free on bail, disputes the 23-page grand jury summary of graphic testimony, his attorney said.
Penn State remained embroiled Friday over the child sex abuse that led to the firing of legendary football coach Joe Paterno, with the board of trustees convening and a group of students planning a vigil in support of alleged abuse victims.
The developments come ahead of the team’s last home game of the season Saturday against Nebraska.
The university’s board of trustees plans to meet Friday morning and is expected to discuss creating a special committee to investigate the child rape allegations, which became public last week after a grand jury report on the case was released.
In the evening, a candlelight vigil in support of victims of child abuse will be held at 9:30 p.m.. There will be speakers, including a victim of sex abuse in another case, performances of the Penn State Blue Band, a marching band, and an a cappella group called Nota. There will be a moment of silence when the clock strikes 10 p.m. at the Old Main building on the Penn State campus.

At stake? Tens of millions of dollars in profits annually. Penn State raked in $72.7 million in revenue from football last season, ranking fifth out of all college programs in the country, according to CNNMoney. It is strange that Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar never prosecuted Jerry Sandusky on child-rape charges 13 years ago, some speculate, because Gricar was known for being fiercely independent and hard on crime.
But it is even stranger that we cannot ask Gricar why Sandusky was not put behind bars because the tough-as-nails district attorney disappeared in 2005. And though he was declared dead July of this year, his body has never been found.
“People ask why Ray did not prosecute, and I have no problem saying, because he clearly felt he didn’t have a case for a ‘successful’ prosecution,” Tony Gricar, Ray Gricar’s nephew , told The Patriot-News.

Rioting? Really. I can’t believe they actually had the courage to fire Grandpa Joe, but this *outrage* is unbelievable.
What about the folks who were raped by grown-ass men? Where’s the show of support, the OUTRAGE on their behalf? How impressed can you be by their ivy league education when they can’t even tell who the REAL victims are?

What kind of person witnesses the rape of a 10 year old and doesn’t call police? Why didn’t he intervene to stop it? Instead, he left the building and allowed the rape to continue. OMFG!
