Roe V. Wade 39TH Anniversary | January 22, 1973…

Here we are folks, at nearly 4 decades still having to defend and fight for our REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS.

Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973), is a controversial landmark decision by the United States Supreme Court on the issue of abortion. Decided simultaneously with companion case Doe v. Bolton, the Court ruled that a right to privacy under the due process clause in the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution extends to a woman’s decision to have an abortion, but that right must be balanced against the state’s two legitimate interests for regulating abortions: protecting prenatal life and protecting the woman’s health. Saying that these state interests become stronger over the course of a pregnancy, the Court resolved this balancing test by tying state regulation of abortion to the woman’s current trimester of pregnancy.  Read all about the landmark Supreme Court decison here. Case here.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Charles Rangel released the following statement to recognize to the historical 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade on January 22, 2012:

“On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court made a historic decision that changed the course for protecting women’s health and personal freedom. It ruled that women have a constitutional right to choose whether or not to have abortion, free from government interference.

Almost four decades later, the majority of Americans still support this decision. It is also important that we remain committed to policies, initiatives and programs that will prevent unintended pregnancies. Each tax dollar spent on contraceptive services saves an average of $3 in Medicaid cost for pregnancy-related health care and medical care of newborns. Without these services, federal and state Medicaid expenditures would increase by $1.2 billion a year.

I will continue to support this constitutional right and embrace the arguments that led to the victory of Roe v. Wade. On this anniversary, I am committed to ensuring that all women have the right to choose while promoting preventative measures.”

Obama On Roe v. Wade Anniversary: ‘I Remain Committed To Protecting A Woman’s Right To Choose’
    President Obama released this statement:

As we mark the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, we must remember that this Supreme Court decision not only protects a woman’s health and reproductive freedom, but also affirms a broader principle: that government should not intrude on private family matters. I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose and this fundamental constitutional right. While this is a sensitive and often divisive issue- no matter what our views, we must stay united in our determination to prevent unintended pregnancies, support pregnant woman and mothers, reduce the need for abortion, encourage healthy relationships, and promote adoption. And as we remember this historic anniversary, we must also continue our efforts to ensure that our daughters have the same rights, freedoms, and opportunities as our sons to fulfill their dreams.
