Updated with video of PBO’s speech
From The Washington Post:
U.S. will stop deporting some illegal immigrants who came here as children
The Obama administration will stop deporting and begin granting work permits to younger illegal immigrants who came to the U.S. as children and have since led law-abiding lives. The election-year initiative addresses a top priority of an influential Latino electorate that has been vocal in its opposition to administration deportation policies.
The policy change, described to The Associated Press by two senior administration officials, will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It also bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the so-called DREAM Act, a long-sought but never enacted plan to establish a path toward citizenship for young people who came to the United States illegally but who have attended college or served in the military.
And from Mother Jones: Obam’s Dream Act Game- Changer
In a major campaign and policy development, President Barack Obama is set to issue an executive order that would prevent DREAM Act-eligible undocumented immigrants from being deported. According to the Associated Press:
Under the administration plan, illegal immigrants will be immune from deportation if they were brought to the United States before they turned 16 and are younger than 30, have been in the country for at least five continuous years, have no criminal history, graduated from a U.S. high school or earned a GED, or served in the military. They also can apply for a work permit that will be good for two years with no limits on how many times it can be renewed. The officials who described the plan spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss it in advance of the official announcement.
Here’s why this is a big deal: Obama has previously issued executive orders setting priorities for immigration enforcement, but this order would grant DREAM Act-eligible undocumented immigrants work authorization—that is, allow them to obtain jobs legally in the United States. That will afford them the opportunity to stay in the US and work without fear of deportation, though a temporary and fragile standing that could easily be reversed if Mitt Romney moves into the White House next year.
Well, Mitt Romney; your IMMIGRATION plans WERE for SELF DEPORTATION… OK!

Mitt Romney punts on Marco Rubio’s DREAM Act; talks French vacation
Posted by Felicia Sonmezat 03:16 PM ET, 04/23/2012
ASTON, Pa. – If Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has an opinion on Sen. Marco Rubio’s scaled-back version of the DREAM Act, he’s not willing to share it just yet.
Snip
I’m taking a look at his proposal; it has many features to commend it but its something that we’re studying,” Romney added.
Late last year, Romney pledged to veto the full DREAM Act if it came across his desk as president.
Rubio’s office has been working on a GOP alternative to the DREAM Act; so far, Romney’s campaign has maintained that the former Massachusetts governor is still “studying” the proposal and has yet to weigh in on it.
“You know, I anticipate before the November election we’ll be laying out whole series of policies that relate to immigration,” Romney said. “And obviously, our first priority is to secure the border, and yet we also have very substantial visa programs in this country. I’ve spoken about the need to have a visa system that’s right-sized for the needs of our employment community. And so, how we adjust our visa program to make it fit the needs of our country is something I’ll be speaking about down the road.” REALLY, MITT?

AMERICANS, HERE’S WHERE MITT ROMNEY STANDS ON THE DREAM ACT
“During the primaries, Governor Romney called the DREAM Act a handout and said he would veto it. His ‘solution’ to our immigration challenges was self-deportation. Today he continues to refuse to express support for legislation that lets children who were brought to the U.S. and want to contribute by pursuing higher education or serve in the military stay in America. The President remains committed to passing the DREAM Act, which was drafted with bipartisan support, but he won’t sit back and allow these children to get deported in the face of inaction. Congressional Republicans must end their continued obstruction to allow us to achieve the ultimate goal of signing the DREAM Act into law.

Romney defends DREAM Act stance

CNN’s Kevin Liptak
(CNN) – Mitt Romney, fresh from a narrow win in the Iowa caucuses, defended Wednesday his opposition to the DREAM act, which would allow a path to citizenship for minors in the country illegally.
“You know, the Hispanic-American voters I speak with are overwhelmingly concerned with opportunity,” Romney said on CNN’s “Starting Point with Soledad O’Brien.

“They want good jobs in America and rising incomes. If they want a president who is going to talk to them about a handout or more benefits for free, they got that guy. If they, instead, want a president who understands the economy who has lived in the economy and understands what it takes to help people get jobs, again, then I’m that person,” Romney continued.
Romney made his first firm statement on the DREAM act last week, affirming as president he would veto the law if it passed Congress. The proposal lays out a path to American citizenship for minors in the United States illegally who serve in the military or attend college. Currently the initiative has yet to pass Congress, despite several attempts.

RNC Takes Down Latino Outreach Site
The RNC has taken down its Latino outreach site, RNCLatinos.com, instead redirecting to a volunteer sign up page on the RNC’s main website. The barebones RNCLatinos.com had been plagued by a series of embarassing missteps that the GOP blamed on the “outside vendor” who crafted it. They included the use of a picture of Asian children for the site’s banner image, a poll asking users whether they were disappointed in President Obama (they responded they weren’t), a blog page dominated by spam for handbags and headphones, and a “Who Are We?” section left entirely blank. On Thursday night, the RNC took down portions of the site, including its banner and blog section, but the entire page was down as of Friday morning.

Round 2 of the Dream Act goes to PBO!
Thank you, Mr. President for doing what is right and LAWFUL. That’s why you are the POTUS.
Love hearing the birds chriping in the background.
While I understand what the President did with regards to the DREAM ACT, I hope folks get the words out that it’s not what he wanted to do. This President has liked to change LAW, because LAW, is not subject to the WHIM of whomever is in the Oval Office. So, my Latino friends, spread the word that this could last as long as January 20, 2013.
Because, if Willard Romney is elected President, it will be UNDONE.
It’s about DOING THE RIGHT THING. Apparently, certain laws don’t apply to a elite group of so-called Americans..
Following Obama’s Move, How Will Mitt Romney Break His Silent Treatment Of Immigration?
Evan McMorris-Santoro- June 15, 2012, 11:07 AM 1886
President Obama pushed the immigration debate back into the campaign spotlight Friday when he announced an executive order that appears to be modeled on the DREAM Act. The move means big, sweeping changes for millions of children of illegal immigrants — and it effectively puts Mitt Romney in a box.
Romney has pledged to veto the version of the DREAM Act passed by the House and killed by conservatives in the Senate in 2010, and has drawn the ire of Hispanic activists by packing his primary campaign full of advisers and supporters hailing from the anti-immigration right.
In recent days, Romney’s stepped up his outreach efforts to Hispanics, a demographic that’s still largely uninterested in his candidacy. But he’s done it by avoiding any discussion of immigration at all costs — and has declined to tailor a campaign message specifically to the Hispanic community. When he spoke to the conservative Latino Coalition last month, he didn’t bring up immigration. He keeps his message to Hispanics focused solely on the economy.
But Obama’s mini-DREAM Act move will almost certainly force Romney’s hand.
Some Republican consultants weighed in to TPM on how Romney should begin a discussion about a hot-button issue he has expressly avoided.

Flip Flop as usual,by now his nick name should be Flipper, but l don’t want to disrespect Flipper.
I might add, that I don’t care HOW it just got done, but that it DID:) A great day for America and all the dreamers.
I think this wasn’t an EO, but a directive from DHS. Here is Janet Napolitano’s directive:
