Obama says he won’t apologize to Romney

“No. We will not apologize,” Obama said in an interview taped Saturday with WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Va., and posted on the station’s website Sunday. “Mr. Romney claims he’s Mr. Fix-it for the economy because of his business experience, so I think voters entirely legitimately want to know what is exactly his business experience.”  Full unedited transcript and video of one-on-one interview here.

And Romney thinks it’s better to be attacked than release his taxes- Hmmm; what’s in those tax returns, Mittens?

MEET THE PRESS: Durbin: Romney Fails to Meet GOP’s Minimum Disclosure Requirement for Cabinet Nominees
On “Meet the Press” today, Senator Dick Durbin highlighted how Mitt Romney’s flouting of decades of precedent of presidential candidates releasing multiple years of tax returns, which was set in motion by his father in 1968, falls short of disclosure requirements that Republican Senators have demanded for President Obama’s cabinet nominees.

BLOG ROUND UP/SNAP SHOT

Rahm Emanuel:  Mitt Romney Should ‘Stop Whining’ About Bain Huffington Post // Elise Foley Former White House chief of staff and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel had some advice for Mitt Romney on Sunday: stop complaining about the Obama campaign’s attacks over Bain Capital. “As Mitt Romney said once to his own Republican colleagues, stop whining,” Emanuel said on ABC’s “This Week.” “I give him his own advice. Stop whining. If you want to claim Bain Capital as your calling card for the White House, then defend what happened at Bain Capital.”

Sen. Durbin: Romney running away from Bain ‘like a scalded cat’ The Hill // Keith Laing Durbin said Romney could clear questions about his tenure at Bain “this afternoon” by releasing more tax records. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) Sunday said GOP presidential Mitt Romney candidate is running away from his ties to private equity firm Bain Capital “like a scalded cat.” Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate and key ally of President Obama said Romney could clear up controversy surrounding his tenure at Bain “this afternoon” by releasing more tax information.

Gillespie: Romney ‘Retired Retroactively’ from Bain National Journal // Alexandra Jaffe Mitt Romney’s top campaign adviser insisted on Sunday that Romney has no responsibility for any decisions made at Bain Capital during the three years from 1999 to 2001, during which he claimed that he had resigned from the company to go run the Olympics in Utah, and explained that Romney had “retired retroactively to 1999” from the company.

Emanuel: Romney made Bain tenure his ‘calling card,’ should ‘stop whining’ The Hill // Meghashyam Mali Former Obama White House chief-of-staff-turned Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel defended criticisms of Mitt Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital, saying the GOP candidate had made his work there a “calling card” of his campaign and should “stop whining.” “Mitt Romney said Bain Capital is his calling card for why he should be president. He doesn’t talk about Massachusetts as governor. He doesn’t talk about any other piece,” said Emanuel on ABC’s “This Week.” “He says, ‘I created jobs at Bain Capital.’”

Kristol: Romney ‘crazy’ not to release tax returns Politico // Manu Raju Bill Kristol and the Obama campaign agree on something: Mitt Romney should immediately release his tax returns. “He should release the tax returns tomorrow. It’s crazy,” Kristol said on “Fox News Sunday.” “You gotta release six, eight, 10 years of back tax returns. Take the hit for a day or two.”

Axelrod Sharpens Tax Attack on Romney National Journal // Alexandra Jaffe David Axelrod sought to sharpen a line of attack against Mitt Romney on Sunday, accusing him of paying less than his fair share of taxes by using “every single conceivable tax shelter and loophole.” “I’m not suggesting that, based on what we know, that he’s done anything illegal,” Obama’s top campaign adviser said on CNN’s State of the Union. “I’m not suggesting that. But what I am suggesting is that he’s taken advantage of every single conceivable tax shelter and loophole that we can see.”

WHAT HAPPENED?  CITIZENS UNITED HAPPENED, MR. ROMNEY.

How about the TRUTH HAPPENED about YOU, Mitt?

<b.Sunday, July 15, 2012What happened to hope and change?

In the interests of fairness and equal time, here's an ad from the Romney campaign:

You want to know what happened to hope and change, Mitt Romney? I'll tell you, since that has been my subject of special interest for the past four years writing this blog. The Obama campaign is still all about hope and change. Just listen to the president's campaign speeches. They are all about restoring the dreams of the middle class. Increasing fairness. Bringing manufacturing back to this country. And trumpeting the administration's accomplishments so far. Making health care affordable for all. New financial oversight to prevent a repeat of the 2008 financial meltdown. Equal rights for women, minorities, gays.

Appearing on MSNBC’s “Up With Chris Hayes,” Romney’s former partner at Bain Capital Edward Conard made the case for outsourcing jobs, which he argues in his book, “Unintended Consequence”:

CONARD: I think the problem with defending it, for Mitt, I’m not speaking for Mitt […] people look very close at the micro, get their nose close to the paper and say, ah-ha there is a job that was lost and went overseas, and we can speak about Bain. On a macro level we can see 20 million immigrants came into our country, there’s net insourcing, not net outsourcing. We were growing the economy fast enough that we were pulling the employees into the country, more than sending out of the country. Of the 40 million jobs created, 50 percent were created at the highest end of the wage scale, 40 percent of the jobs in the 1980s were at the highest end of the wage scale, so, there was a disproportionate increase at the high end of the wage scale over that, over that period.

Mitt Romney’s Candidacy is Turning into The Republican Party’s Worst Nightmare
By: Sarah Jones July 15th, 2012

The hits just keep coming for Mitt Romney. This a another defining moment for the Romney campaign, and shows the fissure between Romney’s business experience and the political realm. But it also shows that Mitt Romney’s financial issues — from Bain to his secret taxes to his hidden off-shore money — make him the poster boy for the 2%. The more Americans learn about how privileged Mitt Romney is, the more aware they’ll be that they are being royally screwed by the privileged. This is a conversation topic that the 2% do not want Americans to be engaged in.

This morning’s discussion on ABC This Week is a strong indicator that even Republicans don’t like the direction Mitt Romney’s campaign is going and can’t support Romney’s arrogance in not releasing his tax returns and information about his offshore accounts.

TRYNA FIGURE OUT WHAT THE FUCK “RETIRE RETROACTIVELY” MEANS

    The ‘Lectric Law Library
RETROACTIVELY, RETROACTIVITY – Generally refer to laws or court decisions which affect already existing rights, obligations and duties, or attach new conditions in respect to transactions or events already past.

Retroactivity depends on whether the new provision attaches new legal consequences to events completed before its enactment. Landgraf v. USI Film Prods., 114 S. Ct. 1483, 1499 & n.3 (1994). “The conclusion that a particular rule operates `retroactively’ comes at the end of a process of judgment concerning the nature and extent of the change in the law and the degree of connection between the operation of the new rule and a relevant past event.” Id. at 1499.

Harper v. Virginia Dep’t of Taxation, 113 S. Ct. 2510, 2517 (1993) holds that no court may refuse to apply rule of federal law retroactively once the Court applies it to the parties before it.

A statute passed by a legislature usually states that it shall only apply after a certain date. Occasionally, though, laws are made retroactive–that is, they apply to events that happened before the law was passed. (Criminal laws are never retroactive–the legislature cannot make a past act a crime.) If the statute itself doesn’t indicate the date it is to become effective, courts normally interpret it to have future effect only.

Example: Assume that the Minnesota legislature passes a law requiring a couple to undergo a blood test as a requirement of being married. The legislature intends that it apply to couples both planning to marry and already married. (Currently, Minnesota does not require blood tests before marriage.) Applying the law to already married couples is a retroactive application of the law. A married Minnesotan might challenge the law arguing that applying it to her is unconstitutional because she had no expectation of ever having to undergo a blood test as a requirement of being married in Minnesota.

This reads like the fine print on the subprime mortgages. Guess Mitt’s gotta be held ACCOUNTABLE for signing his name on those SEC docs too!
