The Obama Campaign Sues the State of Ohio Over Early Voting

Here’s the background.

When the GOP in Ohio took over in 2010, one of the things they did, in addition to trying to strip away collective bargaining rights for unions, was to create all these new voter restrictions. But, after their asses got spanked at the polls, losing by over 20 points in the referendum on collective bargaining, they decided to repeal their new voting restrictions before it was stomped down in a referendum. But, being Republicans, they only repealed parts of it. They didn’t repeal the parts about Early Voting, and that’s what the Obama Campaign has sued over.

From the Obama Campaign:

Today, Obama for America-OH Senior Advisor Aaron Pickrell, the Ohio Democratic Party Chairman Chris Redfern, and the Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz released the following statement on the filing of OBAMA FOR AMERICA v. HUSTED in the United States District Court (Southern District of Ohio):

“In 2004, before Early Voting was allowed in Ohio, voters faced disastrous conditions when they showed up to cast their vote on Election Day: widespread mismanagement, 7 hour long lines, and broken machinery. Many Ohioans waited in line for hours, while many others had to walk away.

“Then came Early Voting. For the past 7 years, Ohioans have been able to cast their votes before Election Day, ensuring that the broken system that silenced so many Ohio voters in 2004 would never happen again.

“Early Vote has proven to be an effective way for Ohioans to make their voices heard. In 2008, 30 percent of all votes were cast early, with nearly 93,000 people casting their ballot during the last three days of Early Voting.

“Now, Ohio Republicans are threatening that right. Last year, they passed HB 194, a law that restricted voting rights by drastically reducing Early Vote including the most important Early Voting days for most Ohioans – the 3 days leading up to Election Day.

“Ohioans overwhelmingly rejected this partisan attempt to restrict voting when they turned in 300,000 signatures last December, placing it on the ballot and forcing it to be suspended until Ohioans could vote on the measure this coming November.

“But voters never got the chance to make their voices heard. Through a series of legislative maneuvering concluding with a bill passed this May, Republicans were able to remove the last three days of Early Voting for the vast majority of Ohio voters, a cynical move that is both unfair and unjust.

They think somebody’s playing with them. This is all about the VOTER SUPPRESSION, folks.

ALL ABOUT THE VOTER SUPPRESSION.

They CANNOT WIN in a fair election.

STEALING AMERICA unveils patterns of anomalies at every level of the electoral process. Controversial partnerships perpetuate a secretive environment, as relevant facts and figures remain hidden from view. As a result, most Americans have no real sense of the threat to free and fair elections. As seemingly unrelated pieces of the puzzle come together, a chilling picture emerges of widespread, artfully crafted “glitches” that, in the final tallies, have the capacity to alter election results.

Voter protection and access has been a huge issue this election. In addition to protection efforts, initiatives like this are important — to not just protect access bu tencourage participation, and remind voters the huge impact that their voice, and their vote, can have.

    GO FLOTUS!

Obama campaign sues Ohio over early voting
By Associated Press, Wednesday, July 18, 7:46 AM

COLUMBUS, Ohio — President Obama’s reelection campaign filed a federal lawsuit against Ohio’s top elections official Tuesday in a dispute over the battleground state’s law that restricts in-person early voting in the three days leading up to Election Day.

The lawsuit, filed in Columbus, follows a series of election-law changes that were passed by the state’s Republican-controlled legislature and signed by Gov. John Kasich (R).

Obama’s campaign and other Democrats argue that the law unfairly ends in-person early voting for most Ohioans on the Friday evening before the Tuesday election while allowing military and overseas voters to cast ballots in person until Monday.

Before the changes to the law, local election boards had the discretion to set their own hours for such voting on the days before the election. And in-person voting on the weekend varied among the state’s 88 counties.

The state’s elections chief, Secretary of State Jon Husted, has argued that all counties should have the same early-voting hours and be open on the same days. Husted and his fellow Republicans contend it is unfair that a voter in one county can cast an early ballot on a day when a voter in a neighboring county cannot.

Obama for America was joined in the lawsuit by the Democratic National Committee and the Ohio Democratic Party.

Ohio is one of 32 states that allow voters to cast early ballots by mail or in person without an excuse. About 30 percent of the total vote in swing states — or roughly 1.7 million ballots — came in ahead of Election Day in the last presidential election.

Obama won Ohio in 2008, but Republican challenger Mitt Romney is expected to make a strong play for it in November.
