Serena Williams wins fourth U.S. Open crown

by Douglas Robson, special for USA TODAY

Serena Williams capped a dominating summer and earned player-of-the-year bragging rights by beating No. 1 Victoria Azarenka on Sunday in the U.S. Open final 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

Williams, the reigning Wimbledon champion and Olympic gold medalist in singles and doubles, clawed back from a shaky second set on Arthur Ashe Stadium to earn her fourth major title in New York and 15th overall.

Azarenka, who will remain No. 1 in the world despite the loss, won the Australian Open in January during a 26-match winning streak to open the season.

It’s the first U.S. Open women’s final to go the distance since 1995.

Obama Unleashes a Barrage of Truth and Honesty that Leaves Republicans Defenseless

    By: Rmuse
    September 7th, 2012

At some time during their life, every American has been the subject of aggressive behavior or maltreatment in the form of verbal harassment, fallacious personal assaults, or distortions of the truth meant to impugn their character. It is a sign of high moral fiber to maintain one’s dignity amid unrelenting attacks with no basis in fact, and even more so when the victim carries on without wilting under pressure and either giving up, or lashing out at their detractors. For over three-and-a-half years, President Obama has taken every cheap shot, personal affront, and outright lie from Republicans about his administration’s achievements, and for the entire time he remained above it all and trusted the American people to see through the GOP’s misinformation and baseless allegations. Throughout the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, Democrats have set the record straight, and unlike the Republican convention, they used facts and truth to support their assertions as they laid out a clear path to how they will bring America back from decades of Republican malfeasance.

For those who follow politics closely and listen to the daily lies issuing forth from Republicans, Democrats offered no new revelations as they took turns debunking Republican lies. However, for Americans who only watch the evening news or read the local newspaper, it may have been the first time they learned the truth about the President’s accomplishments, and where Republicans will take the country if they win in November. One of the criticisms some on the left level against the President is that he is remiss to explain the benefits of his legislative agenda, and that he fails to defend himself against ad hominem attacks on his character, but as is usually the case with this President, he waited until the opportune time to unleash a barrage of truth and honesty that leaves Republicans few options that are beneficial for their party.

What Americans learned about President Obama during the DNC is that he is dedicated to serving all the people, including those who demean him based on racial prejudice and conservative vitriol. It is true the President saved the automobile industry, passed landmark healthcare reform, a financial reform law, and a stimulus program that saved America’s economy, but throughout it all, he fought ferociously for the American people. There are millions of Americans who are unaware the President championed legislation to bring jobs back to America, give veterans the care and support they deserve, or save Medicare for the people who have paid into the system their entire working lives, or that Republicans blocked legislation that would help Americans so they could reward corporations that Willard Romney contends “are people, my friends,” and proves it by proposing massive tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans on the backs of the poor and middle class.

Although each speaker gave impassioned speeches about the President, it was former President Bill Clinton who took the time to spell out exactly how the President’s agenda has helped Americans, and how returning to Bush policies under a Romney administration would be a giant step backward that will decimate the nation’s economy as well as the middle class, seniors, and working-poor. Many Americans were still clueless about the benefits of the Affordable Care Act except what they heard from Republicans claiming it is a government takeover of healthcare and a socialist plot, but Clinton succinctly described how the law has immediately help millions of American families. Former President Clinton certainly gave an inspired speech, but more than anything he defined the 2012 DNC by telling the truth, and it is as foreign to Republicans as working for all the American people. His candor using facts is what excited those who have wondered when Democrats would stand up and rebut a mountain of perpetual lies that epitomize the Republican Party, Willard Romney, and Paul Ryan, and all Paul Ryan could say was “President Clinton was rewriting history.”

Bobby Jindal is Fighting Right of First Black Supreme Court Justice to be Chief

    By: Sarah Jones
    September 8th, 2012

Republicans Aren’t Racists, But Bobby Jindal is Fighting the Right of First Black Supreme Court Justice to be Chief Justice

Harkening back to the good old days when Republicans told women that they were pro women because Sarah Palin had ovaries and she was on their ticket, Republicans also have minorities in their ranks like Bobby Jindal (Republican Governor of Louisiana), who is Indian-American. This is supposed to put to rest any notion that they are racists, because racists never, ever fight within minorities like say the Hispanic gang members against the African American gang members in East LA (racism is a tool of the powerful to keep the lower ranks fighting among themselves, deliberately implemented by those in power but believed by those out of power).

Standing tall with the “I am/have a friend who’s gay/female/black/Hispanic/etc and therefor it’s okay when my policies suppress you” get-out-of-bigot-jail free card, Bobby Jindal is challenging a U.S. federal judge’s ruling that a female African American Supreme Court Justice can be the Chief justice in Louisiana.

Because Justice Bernette Johnson was originally elected in 1994 but then assigned to serve on the Supreme Court, due to the state’s deal with the federal government over racial discrimination, the all white justices are saying she doesn’t get to be next in line to be the head justice. Her time doesn’t count, because she was appointed and not elected.
    …………………………….

Justice Johnson took her case to federal court, to ask that her full tenure on the Supreme Court be reaffirmed. No word on whether or not Jindal is requiring her long form birth certificate yet, but double checking the worthiness of black people is always in the cards when those in power are trying to keep their racial discrimination under wraps. It turns out that the federal court agreed that her time served met the state’s constitutional requirements

11,000 Show Up for Obama in Florida While Romney Draws Hundreds in Virginia

    By: Jason Easley
    September 8th, 2012

As 11,000 enthusiastic supporters crammed into St. Petersburg to hear President Obama, Mitt Romney spoke to gathering of several hundred Republicans in an aircraft hanger in Virginia Beach.

The Washington Post reported, “Hoping to blunt any momentum his rival has picked up in Florida since the GOP convention, Obama opened his bus trip in the Interstate 4 corridor, which cuts through the center of the the state from the Gulf Coast to the Atlantic, with a rally for 11,000 in St. Petersburg, not far from Tampa. Obama’s 30-minute speech closely tracked his nomination acceptance speech Thursday in Charlotte.”

The Virginian-Pilot had this to say about attendance at Mitt Romney’s rally, “He spoke to several hundred people who had gathered hours earlier in an aircraft hangar to hear the Republican presidential nominee.”

It might just be me, but 2012 is starting to look a whole lot like 2008. Obama is drawing tens of thousands in critical swing states, while Mitt Romney is speaking to hundreds. Romney is trying every gimmick in the book to get people to come and see him speak, as Obama is starting to pack them in. It is becoming clear that the Democratic convention fired up Obama’s base.

Obama, Poverty, Racial Politics, and the White Vote

    By: Deborah FosterSeptember 9th, 2012

Recently, a man I respect very much, Bill Moyers, penned an article titled, “Invisible Americans Get the Silent Treatment.” In his article, he appears to be stunned that “for all his rhetorical skills,” President Obama “oddly…hasn’t made a single speech devoted to poverty since he moved into the White House.” Mr. Moyers points out that candidate Obama talked a great deal about poverty, even being “one of the few politicians who would talk about it.” Moyers bemoans the fact that Obama, as a candidate and author, talked about significant investment in anti-poverty programs that wouldn’t just temporarily ameliorate the symptoms of poverty, but would target education and training so that the poor could make permanent improvements in their life circumstances, while President Obama has not pushed for the “billions” he wanted spent on such programs. Moyers acknowledges the White House has explained the economic crisis required a diversion of attention and dollars from loftier goals to more immediate needs, but he still laments what he considers to be Obama’s neglect of the poor. I think Moyers is missing the most obvious explanation for Obama’s inability to attend to poverty, the very white, very racist Tea Party.

For an Obama supporter, election night 2008 was magical. The genuinely joyful crowds, large American flags waving everywhere, exuberant celebration in many households across the country. I was blessed at that time to be isolated from anyone who was horrified by Obama’s election, but I knew they were out there in large numbers. Racists, flagrant and closeted, were more than distraught. They were panicking. There were also the many conservatives, who don’t consider themselves racist, who were dismayed and fearful, just as they were when Clinton was elected. But it immediately became clearer than it was before that a hefty percentage of what passes for conservatism is simply reactionary to what they fear will be the extension of either rights or public/governmental help to racial minorities. So racism in their crowd, even if it’s latent or unconscious, is ever-present. Maybe they were feeling something similar to our horror watching Bush steal his first “election”, and then win his next.

    …………………………………………………………………..

Obama no doubt expected opposition. But, did he plan for the American people to turn on him with this kind of virulence? Starting with high favorability numbers, his approval rating steadily dropped his first year until he had only an 8 point lead on the Tea Party, which should have been confined to the typical 32% of hardcore conservatives that always hate a Democratic president. Meanwhile, the Tea Party managed to gain higher favorability ratings than either the Democrats or Republicans by the end of 2009. By then, Americans who weren’t affiliated with the Tea Party were influenced by them, and had their own racial fears stoked. Coerced by the constant media attention to attend to the issues the Tea Party wanted to focus on, government spending (on those people) was on everyone’s mind. Never mind that Obama was spending less than the four previous Presidents, everyone was labeling him as a big spender. Never mind that he cut taxes for the middle class, people were saying he raised taxes on them. The Institute for Policy Integrity recently published a report showing that in U.S. newspapers alone, use of the term, “job killing regulations” has increased by 17,000%, no doubt most of it in Obama’s term. The mid-term election wiped away any upper hand Obama once had.

Obama was left with little political capital. Any plans he had to tackle poverty were waylaid. There was a dual dynamic going on. First, he had to deal with being labeled a tax-and-spend liberal facing the most obstructionist Congress in decades, so generating any new government spending for poverty was next to impossible. It’s a fantasy to believe that anything beyond fighting to maintain funding for existing programs was possible. But, the other issue is Obama’s race. The upsurge of racism apparent since the beginning of his Presidency has included efforts to paint Obama as a president who wanted to flood African Americans with government largesse, no matter how ridiculous the claim may be. Way too many Americans associate poverty with African Americans, despite the vastly higher number of white people in poverty. Forced to resist the accusations that he is “the Black President” and not the President of all Americans, Obama has had to distance himself from any policy that would appear to be minority-linked. It harms people in poverty (all of them), but nothing else was really possible politically. No doubt Obama has done this with his eye always on reelection, fully conscious that he cannot afford to alienate too many white Americans. And unfortunately, a huge number of white people, even those who voted for Obama and think they are not racist, are prone to be influenced by racial politics. It’s why Ronald Reagan launched his candidacy from Philadelphia, Mississippi and harped on “welfare queens.” It’s why Newt Gingrich tried to make Obama the food stamp president. And it is why Mitt Romney is going all out to make it seem like Obama is heavily in favor of welfare. It doesn’t just work with the conservative base. There are plenty of independents and centrists who unconsciously respond to these age-old tactics. As Rachel Maddow’s recent segment on “the White Vote” demonstrated, Romney will need to rely on the vote of white people to an unprecedented degree. No wonder that Romney-Ryan are employing these dog-whistle politics so heavily.

Any attempt Obama had made to address poverty amidst this toxic brew of racism and white fear would have only reinforced the crazy notion that he is the president of only African Americans and other minorities. It would have been self-defeating, both to him and to the policies proposed. Hopefully, should Obama win a second term, not have to worry so much about political capital, and face a less petulant Congress, he will pursue the poverty goals he originally spelled out as a candidate and author.

Romney’s Latest Play for Women Voters is Giant Lie About Obama’s Abortion Policy

    By: Sarah JonesSeptember 9th, 2012

Proving how little he knows about the issue of abortion and how little David Gregory cares about the facts, Romney announced a policy position today that has already been in place since 1976. He claimed it was the opposite of the President’s position, but of course, this is not even possible, given current law.

Mitt Romney announced today that he would “reverse the president’s decision on using U.S. funds to pay for abortion outside this country. I don’t think also the taxpayers here should have to pay for abortion in this country.”

No doubt Romney is referring to the fact that rape is a huge problem in the military and women in the military often don’t have access to abortions overseas. Romney and Gregory must not be aware that indeed, US funds do not pay for abortions due to the Hyde Amendment, so this big policy announcement is a complete fail.

Gregory did not ask how Romney’s position today makes any sense given his endorsement of the Personhood Amendment, which criminalizes birth control and does not provide exceptions for the life of the mother, rape or incest.

This issue matters a great deal to the women of this country, and we’d like a straight answer. But we have been told by Mitt Romney and his wife that this is not an important issue. It’s important to us

Paul Ryan Falls Apart When Asked How Romney Will Pay for Tax Cuts for the Rich

    By: Jason EasleySeptember 9th, 2012

Paul Ryan fell apart today when George Stephanopoulos asked the deer in headlights vice presidential nominee how Mitt Romney will pay for $5 trillion in tax cuts for the rich.

Paul Ryan’s answer on how he and Romney would pay for $5 trillion in tax cuts for the wealthy was trust us. Ryan wants America to take his word for it that this plan really works. Of course he could cite no specific evidence that it works, and he won’t tell voters how it will work, but he knows that it will work.

However, the evidence can be found in our own recent history to prove that this policy doesn’t work. George W. Bush cut taxes for the wealthy and the jobs never came. President Obama was ransomed into extending the Bush tax cuts and the jobs never came, but even more telling is the fact the Ryan won’t disclosed how they are going to pay for their gift to the wealthy.

In fact when Paul Ryan was pressed ever so slightly by George Stephanopoulos for specifics, the vice presidential nominee fell apart. Like a snowman on sunny day, Paul Ryan melted down to nothing when a little heat was put on him.

Romney and Ryan say their plan isn’t a secret, but they won’t tell America what the plan is.

Ryan did lie and claim that the president planned to raise taxes on small businesses, when in reality Obama’s plan is to cut taxes for 97% of small businesses. He also insinuated that Obama wants to add more loopholes for the wealthy to avoid paying taxes, when in reality, the president has been proposing more deductions to help people pay for things like education and healthcare.

There is no big secret to Romney’s tax cut plan. Under his proposal the top 1% get trillions of dollars in tax cuts, and a person earning $40,000-$50,000 would have seen a $54 tax cut in 2011. According to the Tax Policy Center, the only way that Romney can pay for his gift to the rich is by making everyone else pay more.

Since Ryan doesn’t want to say that the plan won’t create jobs, but it will raise your taxes, he has to dance around and pretend that his secret plan isn’t really a secret.

All it took was one simple question to reduce the Republican budget guru/vice presidential nominee to a pile of evasive sniveling talking points.

Ann Romney Says It’s Ridiculous That You Think They Don’t Have Empathy

    By: Sarah Jones
    September 9th, 2012

While extolling her own suffering, Ann Romney complained about how You People have demonized the great compassion evinced in The Mitt Romney, and added, “And for people to think that we don’t have empathy just because we’re not suffering like they’re suffering is– is ridiculous. It’s– it’s ridiculous to think that you can’t have empathy for somebody that’s struggling.”

Mrs. Romney did concede that their suffering has not been financial, contrary to the story of tuna on the ironing board told at the RNC. But she is here to tell you that just because they haven’t suffered financially doesn’t mean they haven’t suffered; she has MS. She wants you to believe in their compassion.

MS. ROMNEY: Well, I think the– the thing that I want to communicate to people, and that it’s so important that people understand, is that Mitt and I do recognize that we have not had a financial struggle in our lives. But I want people to believe in their hearts that we know what it is like to struggle. And our struggles have not been financial, but they’ve been with health and with difficulties in– in different things in life. And one thing that I– that I again like to remind people is that multiple sclerosis has been my teacher. It has been at times a cruel teacher. But it has also been a great gift in my life because what it has done it has taught me to be more compassionate and caring for others that are suffering. And I know that people are suffering right now. And for people to think that we don’t have empathy just because we’re not suffering like they’re suffering is– is ridiculous. It’s– it’s ridiculous to think that you can’t have empathy for somebody that’s struggling.

Our life has always been devoted to those that are struggling more than we are and I was grateful for the opportunity that we had at the convention for others to speak up and talk about the kind of lives we’ve led– we’ve led. And in particular for Mitt who really has been demonized in many ways as being heartless. And for people to stand up and say, excuse me, he was there when my son was dying of leukemia. He came to my son’s bedside. He did all of these things for my son. And then another woman saying how Mitt was there for her. So there’re hundreds of those stories that haven’t been told. And it was refreshing to me for the American people to finally be able to see the lens through which I see my husband and the perspective in which I understand how he operates.

She was so close. She started off well. She was open and warm in the beginning. I believe that Ann Romney has suffered due to MS. I’ll bet she’s very understanding about health challenges.

But then Ann let her anger get the best of her, and we got another lecture about how ridiculous it is of us to think they don’t know suffering. Out came the sharp tone, jutting chin of disdain, and the irritated, angry condemnation of the People.

Ann Romney Says Mitt Is Much Maligned, Emphasizes ‘Goodness of This Man’

As night fell on a baseball stadium here in New Hampshire, Ann Romney rallied a crowd of thousands, hinting that with two months to go until the election, she’s already got her eye on an inauguration party in January, even if she believes her husband is “being maligned.”

“Let’s see what Mitt can do, and we’ll have this great joy together in January, and have a wonderful party in Washington, D.C., and celebrate the next president of the United States,” said Mrs. Romney, who introduced her husband this evening at the rally. The couple was positioned just behind home plate on the baseball diamond.

“Well, here we are. Let’s let it all begin. It’s a new day, and a new way for America,” said Mrs. Romney. “We’re excited about these next 60 days, and you guys have to help us make it happen.”

Romney, Ryan Refuse To Identify Tax Loopholes They’d Close

    -snip-

On NBC’s “Meet The Press,” Romney dodged multiple questions about which deductions or credits he’d target, saying only that he’ll get rid of “some of the loopholes and deductions at the high end” while seeking to “lower the burden on middle income people.”

Pressed for one specific example, Romney replied, “Well, the specifics are these which is those principles I described are the heart of my policy.”

On ABC’s “This Week,” Ryan also fended off multiple questions about whether the Romney-Ryan tax plan should be taken seriously given its lack of details on which loopholes they would close.

“Mitt Romney and I, based on our experience, think the best way to do this is to show the framework, show the outlines of these plans, and then to work with Congress to do this. That’s how you get things done,” he said.

The Romney-Ryan plan would cut taxes beneath existing Bush-era levels, with benefits disproportionately for high earners, at a cost of roughly $5 trillion. They have vowed that the breaks would be revenue-neutral by way of closing tax credits and deductions but have persisted in their refusal to specify which ones, other than promising that the changes wouldn’t target middle class Americans.

Dispute Over Costs Delays Opening of 9/11 Museum
    By CHARLES V. BAGLI
    Published: September 8, 2012

A dispute between Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo over the $1 billion museum at ground zero has dragged on for so long that the museum will not open in time for the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks — or even for the next one.

Aides to Mr. Bloomberg and Mr. Cuomo have so far been unable to resolve their differences over which government agencies will pay the operating costs of the museum, which is intended to document the terrorist attacks of 2001 and honor the nearly 3,000 victims. The two sides also remain at odds over who will have oversight of the museum and the surrounding memorial.

The negotiations are further complicated because Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey must sign off on any agreement before it can take effect. Mr. Cuomo and Mr. Christie together control the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns the World Trade Center site. Mr. Bloomberg is chairman of the Sept. 11 foundation, which controls the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, and oversees commemorative events at the site

Obama hits Romney with new Medicare study

By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press – 1 hour ago

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — President Barack Obama is drawing fresh attention to Medicare in all-important Florida, seizing on an election-year issue that’s been more favorable to Democrats.

Campaigning for a second day in a state where older voters and workers approaching retirement hold sway, Obama was expected to highlight a study by a Democratic leaning group that concluded that on average a man or woman retiring at age 65 in 2023 would have to pay $59,500 more for health care over the length of their retirement under Mitt Romney’s plan.

The numbers are even higher for younger people who retire later, the study found. A person who qualifies for Medicare in 2030 — today’s 48-year-old — would see an increase of $124,600 in Medicare costs over their retirement period.

While Romney’s changes to Medicare would affect future retirees, the study also said that the Republican presidential nominee’s plan to get rid of Obama’s health care law could raise health care costs in retirement by $11,000 for the average person who is 65 today by reinstating limits on prescription drug coverage.

President Obama was schmoozing his way around the sports bar Gator’s Dockside, chatting up families and posing for photos as part of his campaign bus tour of Florida on Saturday night, when he stopped at a table of 10 people, including several children.

“He was born in Hawaii,” one woman said, pointing to a blond boy down the table.

The president lit up and flashed the Hawaiian shaka hand sign, which the boy — Andre Wupperman, who will be 7 next week — returned.

“You were born in Hawaii?” Mr. Obama asked, then broke out into a smile. “You have a birth certificate?”

    The table burst into laughter.
