On “Meet the Press” today, Mitt Romney again refused to identify one tax loophole or deduction that he’d close to pay for his $5 trillion in new tax cuts favoring the wealthiest Americans. As his advisers have said, he knows it would be politically “suicidal” to do so. Because there are simply not enough loopholes for the wealthyin the federal budget that he could eliminate to pay for his tax cut, the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center found that Romney’s tax plan could only be paid for by limiting popular tax deductions like the mortgage interest deduction, which would raise taxes on the average middle class family with kids by $2,000 a year:

Romney, Ryan Contradict Each Other on Sequestration

In their respective interviews on “Meet the Press” and “Face the Nation” today, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan tripped over their answers on the automatic defense cuts in the Budget Control Act. First, Romney slammed Congressional Republicans, including his running mate Paul Ryan, for supporting sequestration in the Budget Control Act, calling it a “mistake.” Then, on “Face the Nation”, Ryan could not answer why he continues to criticize the President for sequestration, even though he voted for it, championed it to the public, and helped sell it to his caucus. The fact remains that we could prevent the automatic defense cuts if Congressional Republicans drop their refusal to ask for another dime from millionaires and billionaires

Romney exposes his lack of knowledge – or care – for foreign policy: Romney Again Ignores Question About Not Mentioning Troops or Afghanistan

On “Meet the Press” today, Mitt Romney again ignored a question about why he failed to mention either the troops or Afghanistan at the Republican Convention in Tampa. In doing so, he was the first Republican nominee since 1952 to not mention war in an acceptance speech. In an interview with Fox News’ Bret Baier on Friday, Romney initially laughed off the question about whether he regretted this oversight, saying: ““I only regret you repeating it day in and day out.” Then clarified that , “when you give a speech, you don’t go through a laundry list. You talk about the things you think are important, and I described in my speech my commitment to a strongmilitary, unlike the president’s decision to cut our military. I didn’t use the word ‘troops,’ I used the word ‘military.’ I think they refer to the same thing.”

On “This Week” today, Paul Ryan wouldn’t name a single specific loophole that the Romney-Ryan ticket would close but said they would plug loopholes for high income earners since “high income earners use most of the loopholes, that means they can shelter their income from taxation.” If Paul Ryan isn’t sure which loopholes for high income earners should be closed, then he should ask his running mate Mitt Romney. Just this week theWashington Post reported that Romney’s agreement with Bain Capital allowed him to tax advantage of tax advantages only available to the wealthiest Americans to accrue an IRA that was worth up to $100 million. And Romney’s limited financial disclosure showed he owned a Swiss bank account and also owned a shell corporation in Bermuda and held a stake in funds the Cayman Islands which may have been used to avoid U.S. taxation. But Romney won’t clear up these questions by releasing additional years of tax returns, which begs the question:

Romney Has No Plan to Help Americans with Pre-Existing Conditions

Today, Romney repeated the fiction that his health care plan will help people with pre-existing conditions get coverage. What he failed to mention was that his plan only protects those who have had “continuous coverage” – a group that has been protected under federal law since 1996. But many people go through a period without health insurance, often after losing a job. When Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he really did have a comprehensive plan to make sure people with pre-existing conditions could get coverage, which is why his Massachusetts health reform law formed the basis for Obamacare. But now, he has pledged to repeal the national law modeled on his successful efforts, and has offered an inadequate plan in its place.

Ryan Can’t Explain 12 Million Jobs Claim

On “This Week” today, host George Stephanopoulos pressed Congressman Ryan on his claim that the Romney-Ryan plan would create 12 million jobs in their first term. As Stephanopoulos pointed out, independent economists already project that we will add 12 million jobs under current policies. In fact, economists have said that Romney’spolicies would slow the recovery, produce 2 million fewer jobs next year alone, and could even push us back into a recession.

Even Ryan Doesn’t Think Russia is Our #1 Geopolitical Foe

On “Face the Nation” today, Congressman Ryan couldn’t justify Mitt Romney’s claim that Russia is our “number one geopolitical foe”, even as Romney continues to double down on his Cold War-era rhetoric.

President Obama has repeatedly stood up to Russia and China when we disagree, but we have also been able to work together when it’s in our national security interest to do so – like supplying our troops in Afghanistan through Russia or putting the toughest sanctions in history on Iran together. Mitt Romney’s outdated rhetoric would only put that essential cooperation in jeopardy.
