BuzzFeed’s McKay Coppins reports on the making of Mitt Romney’s storm relief stunt (emphasis added):
The plan was for supporters to bring hurricane relief supplies to the event, and then deliver the bags of canned goods, packages of diapers, and cases of water bottles to the candidate, who would be perched behind a table along with a slew of volunteers and his Ohio right-hand man, Senator Rob Portman. To complete the project and photo-op, Romney would lead his crew in carrying the goods out of the gymnasium and into the Penske rental truck parked outside.
But the last-minute nature of the call for donations left some in the campaign concerned that they would end up with an empty truck. So the night before the event, campaign aides went to a local Wal Mart and spent $5,000 on granola bars, canned food, and diapers to put on display while they waited for donations to come in, according to one staffer. (The campaign confirmed that it “did donate supplies to the relief effort,” but would not specify how much it spent.)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) turned down an offer from President Obama to visit the storm-ravaged Big Apple, but he said Tuesday that his rejection wasn’t meant as an insult.
“What I pointed out to them is we would love to have him, but we have lots of things to do,” Bloomberg said at a press conference. “I’m not trying to diss him. But I know he had planned a trip to New Jersey, and I said that’s fine. It represents the whole region.”
The mayor, who has stayed neutral in this year’s presidential race, added that he was “flattered” by Obama’s offer and that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been “very helpful to us.”
Obama heads to New Jersey today to tour damage with Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.Y.), an outspoken critic of the president who has had nothing but praise for the president’s storm response.

Chris Christie Probably Really Doesn’t Give a Damn About Presidential Politics Right Now
Why has Chris Christie suddenly embraced President Obama as a long-lost brother in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy? This joins many other great questions of the universe. Who is John Galt? Who promoted Perez? Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? What did he know and when did he know it? What is the meaning of life?1 But today Dan Amira takes a crack at it anyway:
Some might conclude that Christie is looking out for his own political future (again?), either as a Republican governor running for reelection in a blue state or as a straight-talking Republican presidential candidate hoping to win the support of independents. Or it may be that Christie, as he told Fox & Friends this morning, just doesn’t “give a damn about presidential politics” right now. But Romney surely still does, and he probably wouldn’t mind if Christie toned it down a bit.
I find this oddly fascinating. I sort of give Christie the benefit of the doubt here. Partly this is because he does seem to be a genuinely emotional guy and may simply be reacting to the moment. But the other reason is that I find it hard to believe that Christie truly thinks he has a chance of winning the Republican nomination in 2016 regardless of what he does. We’ve been through this all before, but he’s (a) kinda sorta pro-choice, (b) thinks climate change is real, (c) is in favor of gun control, and (d) when someone asked him about tea-partyish concerns over Sharia law he famously said, “It’s just crazy. And I’m tired of dealing with the crazies.” I know people can convince themselves of all sorts of things, but you’d really have to be living in la-la land to think the Republican Party is going to nominate anyone like that sometime soon.
But regardless of whether I’m right or wrong, Christie’s comments have been over-the-top enough that I doubt they’re solely a product of being overcome by emotion. Christie, I’d guess, has pretty much given up on the prospect of Romney winning next week. I wonder if he knows something the rest of us don’t?

3:38 p.m. | Updated President Obama and Chris Christie, the governor of New Jersey, praised each other’s leadership after touring widespread devastation along the New Jersey coast on Wednesday.
“I want to let you know that your governor is working overtime,” Mr. Obama said to people who fled to the Brigantine Beach Community Center as a shelter from the storm.
Mr. Christie quickly returned the compliment, saying of Mr. Obama that “he’s been working with me” and adding that “It’s really important to have the president of the United States here.”
Both men spoke privately with some of the people at the shelter, and while they had yet to describe what they saw during a tour of the coast on Marine One, journalists following behind them described the view from their ride.
“There was a carnival and a large pier that look like the storm took giant bites out of the ends of them,” the pool reporter wrote, describing the town of Seaside Heights. “Houses flattened — not whole neighborhoods but scattered here and there. Wood fragments everywhere. The boardwalk gone except for lonely posts here and there. The whole town looks like a beach with houses sprouting out from the middle of their first levels.”
The pool report described the water’s devastation, including a “fire, which appears to have taken out about eight homes to the ground. It is burning as we pass by.”
Mr. Christie has been one of Mr. Obama’s fiercest critics and one of Mitt Romney’s most visible supporters. Mr, Christie has accused the president of lacking the abilities to lead the nation effectively.
And Christie has basically told Romney and Co. to take a flyin hike! LOL

The blunt and and often emotional style that brought New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie into the national spotlight has been on full display this week as superstorm Sandy decimated coastal areas of his state.
