VP Joe Biden Vows Action on Gun Control

JoeNew York Times

WASHINGTON — Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will present President Obama with proposals for stemming gun violence by Tuesday, setting in motion legislative and executive actions that will encompass guns, ammunition, mental health services and violent images in popular culture.

“I have committed to him I will have his recommendations to him by Tuesday,” Mr. Biden said Thursday as he began meetings with sportsman and hunting groups to discuss the gun issue.

  1. Rep. Stockman threatens Obama impeachment over guns

Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) is threatening to file articles of impeachment against President Barack Obama if he moves to change gun regulations through executive order.

“I will seek to thwart this action by any means necessary, including but not limited to eliminating funding for implementation, defunding the White House, and even filing articles of impeachment,” Stockman said.

In a statement, Stockman didn’t hold back, saying Obama is launching an “attack on the very founding principles of this republic.”

“The President’s actions are an existential threat to this nation,” Stockman said in a statement. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms is what has kept this nation free and secure for over 200 years. The very purpose of the Second Amendment is to stop the government from disallowing people the means to defend themselves against tyranny. Any proposal to abuse executive power and infringe upon gun rights must be repelled with the stiffest legislative force possible.”

  2. Biden: W.H. readies 19 executive actions on guns

    http://www.politico.com/story/2013/01/biden-guns-executive-actions-86187.html

The White House has identified 19 executive actions for President Barack Obama to move unilaterally on gun control, Vice President Joe Biden told a group of House Democrats on Monday, the administration’s first definitive statements about its response to last month’s mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Later this week, Obama will formally announce his proposals to reduce gun violence, which are expected to include renewal of the assault weapons ban, universal background checks and prohibition of high-capacity magazine clips.

  3. NRA president predicts assault weapons ban won’t pass Congress

The head of the National Rifle Association (NRA) on Sunday predicted that efforts to pass a ban on assault weapons would fail.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union with Candy Crowley,” NRA President David Keene, the head of the nation’s largest gun lobby, said that the White House task force on gun violence had failed to address the concerns of gun owners and that many of their likely proposals lacked support on Capitol Hill.

“I’m willing to say that guns in this country have as much influence as they always have, and perhaps more,” he said, pointing to the nation’s many gun owners.

Keene said there was little progress in his meeting Thursday with Vice President Joe Biden, who is heading the White House task force.

“We suspect that all he wanted to do was to say he talked to us, and now they’re going to go forward and do the things they wanted to do,” Keene said.

  4. Biden Offers To Speak With Newtown Families

HARTFORD, Conn. — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, who is leading an administration review of gun safety laws, has offered to talk with any families of the Connecticut elementary school shooting victims who would like to speak with him personally, a support group said Saturday.

The group, Sandy Hook Promise, has been working to help the families whose loved ones were killed in the Dec. 14 massacre of 20 first-graders and six women at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown. It said in an email to the families that it could arrange a call or put the families in touch directly with Biden’s office.

  6. 911 calls stream in: ‘Two men came out of their car with rifles’

    http://fb.me/18SclRE2C

PORTLAND, Ore . – 911 calls show how several residents of Southeast Portland and Gresham were spooked by the sight of two men walking around with large assault-style rifles on Wednesday.

The two men, who were legally carrying the weapons, were staging a protest to draw attention to their Constitutional right to bear arms.

Even though they were legal, the two certainly caused quite a stir.

“Two men came out of their car with rifles strapped to the back,” one woman told a 911 dispatcher.

Another woman called police from a school and asked if she should put the building in lockdown.

Emergency dispatchers got so many calls that eventually they started cutting off callers to explain officers had made contact with the men and checked them out.

Some dispatchers also explained to callers that the men were exercising their legal rights.

“No permission, but they do have concealed weapons permits and are able to carry, so at this point police have been, like I said, kind of keeping an eye on them,” one dispatcher told a concerned caller

Biden seeks video game industry input on guns
By JULIE PACE and ERICA WERNER
    — Jan. 11 8:42 AM EST

WASHINGTON (AP) — Looking for broader remedies to gun violence, Vice President Joe Biden is reaching out to the video game industry for ideas as the White House seeks to assemble proposals in response to last month’s massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Biden is scheduled to meet with video game representatives Friday as the White House explores cultural factors that may contribute to violent behavior.

The vice president, who is leading a task force that will present recommendations to President Barack Obama on Tuesday, met with other representatives from the entertainment industry, including Comcast Corp. and the Motion Picture Association of America, on Thursday.

Friday’s meeting comes a day after the National Rifle Association rejected Obama administration proposals to limit high-capacity ammunition magazines and dug in on its opposition to an assault weapons ban, which Obama has previously said he will propose to Congress. The NRA was one of the pro-gun rights groups that met with Biden during the day.

NRA president David Keene, asked Friday if the NRA has enough support in Congress to fend off legislation to ban sales of assault weapons, indicated it does. “I do not think that there’s going to be a ban on so-called assault weapons passed by the Congress,” he said on NBC’s “Today.”

In previewing the meeting with the video game industry, Biden recalled how the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York lamented during crime bill negotiations in the 1980s that the country was “defining deviancy down.”

  9. NRA’s Gun Appreciation Day Scheduled on MLK Holiday? Say It Ain’t So!

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/clarence-b-jones/nra-king-gun-appreciation-day_b_2440998.html?utm_hp_ref=tw

This year the nation’s commemoration of the 84th birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr occurs during the week of the second inauguration of America’s first African-American president, three weeks after the 150th Anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation and during the 50th Anniversary year of Dr. King’s August 28th, 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech.

The unique historic confluence of these events was particularly present in my mind after recently reading and grading of 47 term papers from undergraduate students, who last semester completed my course “From Slavery to Obama” at the University of San Francisco, where I am serving as Diversity Visiting Professor. Added to this were thoughts prompted after viewing Steven Spielberg’s movie Lincoln.

And, like so many people in our nation over the past several weeks, I have been also trying to rationally process the horror of Newtown, CT, the response of the gun lobby to this tragedy and the public’s growing revulsion to acts of violence committed by the use of a gun.

Then I found out that on same the day our nation is scheduled to remember the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — a leader committed to non-violence — the National Rifle Association has organized a Gun Appreciation Day.

My initial reaction to this was: No, this cannot possibly be true. There must be some factual error in the reporting of this planned event.

Then, to my utter disbelief, I double checked, only to find that in fact it is true: On the very day we come together to honor our American apostle of non-violence, a hero, who was tragically assassinated by a rifle’s bullet, the NRA has called for a national Gun Appreciation Day!

    Go figure!

Somebody, please, please, please tell me this will not occur.

  11. CEO Threatens To ‘Start Killing People’ Over Possible Obama Gun Policy

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/10/james-yeager-start-killing-people-obama-gun-policy_n_2448751.html#comments

One CEO says he’s willing to go to outrageous lengths to protect his right to use a gun.

James Yeager, CEO of Tactical Response, a Tennessee company that trains people in weapon and tactical skills, claimed in a video posted on YouTube and Facebook that he would “start killing people” if President Barack Obama decides to take executive action to pass further gun control policies, Raw Story reports.

In a frenetic address to the camera, Yeager puts a call out to other gun rights advocates to “load your damn mags” and “get ready to fight” in what he claims will turn into a “civil war” if gun control measures in the country get any stricter.

        http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/01/11/state-suspends-gun-permit-for-ceo-who-said-he-would-start-killing-people-over-gun-control/

The CEO of a weapons and tactical training company has had his gun permit suspended by the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security after he published a video on YouTube in which he threatened to “start killing people” if President Obama pushes forward with increased gun control, reported News Channel 5.

James Yeager, who heads the Tennessee-based company Tactical Response, issued a video Thursday in which he said, “I was mad when I said it” and “probably allowed my mouth to overrun my logic” but does not retract his statements. He admits he cut his controversial video by eliminating the part where he says he will “start killing people.” He claims he does not “condone anybody doing anything rash” or “committing any kind of felonies, up to and including aggravated assaults and murders, unless its necessary. Right now, it’s not necessary.”

He published a video on Oct. 30, 2012 titled, “Who is James Yeager?” which appears to be a advertisement for his company.

In it, he says, “If the world collapses, not only am I going to survive, I’m going to be the fucking king.”

“I’m James Yeager, and I’m prepared for everything,” he says while holding a large gun.

He claims to have enough food, guns and medical supplies to last a year but that he has told his daughters not to reveal the stockpile. “And they would ask ‘Why?’ And I say, ‘You want me shooting your friends in the face?’”

  12. Taft High School Armed Guard Was ‘Snowed In,’ Not Present During Shooting

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/10/taft-high-school-armed-guard_n_2450710.html

WASHINGTON — Taft Union High School in Taft, Calif., normally has an armed guard on campus to help officials with problems that go “beyond the scope” of the administration.

But on Thursday morning, as a student showed up with a shotgun and fired two to four shots at a teacher and a classmate, the officer was nowhere to be found.

“He couldn’t get there because he was snowed in,” Sheriff Donny Youngblood of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department said in a press conference Thursday afternoon.

To what extent the officer’s absence contributed to the situation at Taft Union will never be known. Law enforcement officials were grateful on Thursday that the impact of the shooting had been limited. The suspected shooter injured only two individuals: a teacher who received what Youngblood called a “pellet wound” to the head, which did not cause significant damage, and a 16-year-old student who was evacuated to a hospital, where he or she remained in critical but stable condition.

  14. NRA: White House Meeting ‘Had Nothing To Do With Keeping Our Children Safe’

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/01/10/nra-white-house-meeting_n_2450998.html#comments

WASHINGTON—The nation’s largest gun-rights lobby says its meeting at the White House was more about demonizing the Second Amendment than about keeping students safe.

The National Rifle Association met with Vice President Joe Biden’s school safety study group on Thursday and afterward said the participants spent most their time on proposals to limit gun rights. The NRA says it, quote, “will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen.”

The politically powerful group—under public pressure since December’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman massacred 20 children and six women—says it will now work with Congress to discuss what works in preventing violence and what does not.

The NRA previously proposed armed security in every American school.
