Mitchell: The history of Emmett Till means nothing to Lil Wayne

If you don’t respect yourself, don’t expect anyone else to respect you.
Fortunately, when Lil Wayne made a rap song that included a vulgar lyric about Emmett Till, there were enough black men left from the civil rights era to put a stop to it.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson tweeted Wednesday afternoon that as soon as he found out about Wayne and his Till comment, he spoke with L.A. Reid, CEO of Epic Records, and “had the comment removed.”
Airickca Gordon-Taylor, the founding director of the Mamie Till Mobley Memorial Foundation, noted on her Facebook page that Reid “apologized to me and our family and said the song is being pulled.”
Gordon-Taylor said she was told, “the song was leaked out and [Reid] had not heard the lyrics.”
“[Reid] is a man of integrity that values our family’s legacy and wouldn’t allow such heinous usage of Emmett Till’s name or dishonor his memory,” she said.
Till was 14 when he was brutally murdered during a visit to see his relatives in the South. His murder in 1955 help ignite the civil rights movement.
That history obviously meant nothing to Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne M. Carter Jr.
At 30 years old, Lil Wayne is living the life that most folks from poor neighborhoods can only dream about. He is described as one of the best-selling hip-hop musicians in the country.
Apparently that must be the reason Lil Wayne thought he could get away with denigrating a civil rights icon.
In a contribution on the track of another rapper, Lil Wayne linked Till’s name to a crude name for sex.

’Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels
Beat that p—- up like Emmett Till.”
Gordon-Taylor had complained that “Karate Chop” is disappointing, dishonorable, and outright disrespectful to [her] family.”
By late Wednesday afternoon, Jackson had settled the dispute and gotten the lyrics removed from the “official recording.”

Family of boy slapped on plane speaks out

MINNEAPOLIS – The family of a boy allegedly slapped by a fellow passenger on a flight to to Atlanta is speaking out.
“I could not believe he would say that and then hit him,” said Jessica Bennett. “I felt like i was in another world. I was shaking.”
In an interview on Saturday with KARE 11, the 19-month-old boy’s mother, Jessica Bennett, said the shocking incident has caused a great deal of emotional trauma for the entire family.
The incident allegedly happened February 8 while Bennett and her son were on a Delta flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta. Bennett says the man sitting next to her, Joe Rickey Hundley of Hayden, Idaho, became increasingly obnoxious and appeared intoxicated during the flight.
“He reeked of alcohol,” recalls Bennett. “He was belligerent and I was uncomfortable.”

Man charged with slapping child fired from job
SPOKANE, Wash. — A man charged with slapping a child while on a flight from Minneapolis to Atlanta has been fired by his employer.
Al Haase, the president and CEO of Aerospace and Defense, Composite Group released a statement Sunday afternoon stating, “Reports of the recent behavior of one of our business unit executives while on personal travel are offensive and disturbing.” He called the behavior “embarassing” and “contradictory to our values.”
Joe Hundley, 60, was charged with simple assault after he allegedly hit a 19-month-old boy who had started to cry.
Jessica Bennett, the child’s mother, says her son started to cry as the pressure changed when the plane descended. She says that’s when Hundley allegedly slapped her son.
According to court documents, Bennett alleges Hundley leaned over and said, “Shut that [N-word] baby up!” before slapping the child and causing him to bleed and cry even harder.
According to the AGC Aerospace and Defense, Composites Group statement, the company has taken the matter very seriously and says that as of Sunday, Hundley is no longer employed with them

Jesse Jackson Jr.’s final act as a public official was to send a Thanksgiving eve resignation letter to the speaker of the House in which he declared that “for 17 years I have given 100 percent of my time, energy and life to public service.”
But federal prosecutors unveiled an image of Jackson as less a public servant and more a politician interested in surrounding himself with treasures. A gold-plated Rolex. Furs and cashmere capes. Memorabilia from the likes of Michael Jackson, Bruce Lee and Martin Luther King Jr. Luxuries out of the reach of the many people trying to stay above the poverty line in Jackson’s former South Side congressional district.
In all, federal prosecutors in Washington alleged that Jackson and his wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, misused more than $750,000 in campaign funds for their personal benefit over nearly seven years starting in 2005. She faces her own charge of fraudulently understating the couple’s income on tax returns for six years.
The charges, months in the making, are the latest development in a steady but grand fall for the onetime political power couple.
The son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson once was considered a wunderkind in Chicago politics and a threat to become Chicago mayor. Then he became ensnared in the scandal that brought down former Gov. Rod Blagojevich. Last June, Jackson took a leave of absence from Congress amid the probe and an eventual diagnosis of bipolar disorder.
Now both Jacksons are expected to sign plea deals with prosecutors.

Prosecutors said Jackson and someone they identified only as “Co-Conspirator 1” attempted to conceal the spending by falsifying financial reports to the U.S. House and campaign reports filed with the Federal Election Commission. The Tribune has identified “Co-Conspirator 1” as Sandi Jackson. She is not charged in her husband’s case.
“The goal of the conspiracy was for Defendant Jesse L. Jackson Jr. and Co-Conspirator 1 to enrich themselves by engaging in a conspiracy and a scheme to defraud in which they used funds donated to the Campaign for their own personal benefit,” prosecutors said in their federal filing.
From 2007 to 2009, prosecutors said, Jackson used campaign funds to buy a $43,350 men’s Rolex watch, more than $9,500 in children’s furniture and more than $5,000 in furs and cashmere capes. He had all the items shipped from Chicago, New Jersey and Beverly Hills, Calif., to his home in Washington, prosecutors said.

In the South Shore neighborhood that Jackson Jr. represented in Congress and Sandi Jackson represented in the City Council, residents were flabbergasted by the excess of the alleged purchases from a couple who had long said public service was their top priority.
“There are too many people out here suffering,” said Misty Washington, 45, pointing down a South Shore street. “Why didn’t he use the money for something positive to help the people here?”
“Really, furs?” added Tony Marshall, who said he’s lived in the South Shore neighborhood since 1971. “I voted for him — and I wish I could take it back.”

Every day at the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in India, about 10,000 people sit cross-legged on the floor of the tonsuring room and let one of the 500 temple barbers shave off their hair. For many Hindu pilgrims, the shave is an intensely moving experience, as they believe that by sacrificing their hair here they will gain Lord Venkateswara’s protection and be cleansed of material debts.
Once the hair hits the floor, however, it enters the world of business. The strands are collected by attendants, packed into large steel bins, washed, and sorted according to length and quality. Twice a year, the stored hair is auctioned off and exported, mainly to the USA, UK and China, where it is used to make hair extensions and wigs. Long, untreated Indian hair is in high demand; the temple’s longest hair sells for RS20,000 (US$375) a kilogram.
Last year, amid concerns that buyers were forming a cartel, conspiring to keep bids low, the temple stopped its open auctioning process and began to sell online instead, through secret tenders. So far, it’s proving extremely lucrative; in 2011, the temple sold 561 tonnes of hair for RS2 billion ($36.9 million).

The Mini Libraries
Urban Librarians Unite is pleased to announce its own small network of little libraries. These bright orange newspaper boxes have been set up outside of library branches in Brooklyn and Queens closed due to damage from Hurricane Sandy. These tiny, all-weather libraries house about a hundred books each at a time and there is no expectation whatsoever that the books need to come back.

It’s a mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress. President Obama’s leaked immigration proposal is disappointing to those of us working on a serious solution. […
Anyone who thought they were going to get something from Rubio other than the usual butthurt over what Obama said or did is living on the edge of reality. Any Republican who put forward a “serious” plan and pushed for it hard couldn’t get the 2016 nomination, which is what our deshidratado Cubano really wants, so adiós reforma.
Speaking of Marco’s SOTU response, more than enough has been said, but I wanted to bat down the myth that responses are always awful. They’ve been awful for Republicans, but Jim Webb did a notably good job in 2007. Of course, Webb didn’t want to run for President in 2008. If you look at Democratic responses in the past, they’re either from novelty minor personalities who are a long way from the Presidency (Gary Locke, Tim Kaine) or long-time House and/or Senate leaders. Republicans are dumb enough to think that the moment immediately after an event where the President looks the best he does all year is a good time to trot out a Presidential contender. Democrats are not. Marco’s problem wasn’t his inability to sip, it was the fact that his ass was in that poorly lit studio mouthing platitudes in the first place

Sen. Lindsey Graham: Sacrifice Obamacare To Avoid Sequester

To avoid a March 1 sequester, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) suggested on Fox News Sunday that Congress save money by cutting the Affordable Care Act instead.
“Here’s my belief: Let’s take Obamacare and put it on the table,” he said. “People are leaving the private sector because their companies can’t afford to offer Obamacare. If you want to look at ways to find $1.2 trillion in savings over the next decade, let’s look at Obamacare. Let’s don’t destroy the military and just cut blindly across the board.”
The White House recently released a fact sheet detailing the devastating effect a sequester could have on the economy if Congress fails to pass spending cuts by March 1, including a reduction in loan guarantees to small businesses by $900 million. The blame, Fox News anchor Chris Wallace pointed out on Sunday, would likely fall on Republicans, who are digging in their heels to protect tax cuts.
Graham said the blame should fall on President Obama, who “came up with the idea of sequestration.”
“The president promised this wouldn’t happen,” Graham said. “He’s the commander in chief, and on his watch we’re going to begin to unravel the finest military in the history of the world at the time we need it most.”

Marco Rubio Rejects Obama Immigration Reform Plan: ‘Dead On Arrival’

Hours after USA Today obtained the first draft of President Obama’s immigration reform plan, the office of Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) put out a press release signaling the lawmaker’s strong opposition.
“It’s a mistake for the White House to draft immigration legislation without seeking input from Republican members of Congress,” the statement begins, before going on to call the bill “half-baked and seriously flawed” and declaring that “if actually proposed, the President’s bill would be dead on arrival in Congress.”
Specifically, Rubio’s statement criticizes the Obama bill for not being tough enough on border security and for failing to reward “those who chose to do things the right way and come here legally” over “those who broke our immigration laws.”
The president’s plan would allow undocumented immigrants to obtain legal permanent residency within eight years, among other provisions.
Until recently, Rubio has not shown much interest in immigration reform. But in the last few months he has cast himself as a leader on the issue, seen as a crucial one for Republicans after their poor showing with Latinos in the 2012 elections. He has won over many conservatives with his own plan, which calls for tighter border and workplace security measures, as well as a long path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

…We learned to be a community. We cared about our neighbors, their property and the safety of their children. This was social capital. We knew that our power came from cooperation and trust that benefited the greater good.
Vandalizing a neighbor’s home was to vandalize our own home. Assaulting a neighbor was to assault oneself. Killing a neighbor was to kill a part of the community. A neighbor who let trash pile up in his yard trashed the value of his neighbors’ yards. Calling the police was not viewed as snitching but as being responsible and caring. We knew that crime destabilized our community and threatened everyone.
Empathy and social capital are absent from too many of today’s black communities nationwide. In places like Chicago’s South Side — where violent teenage gangs have replaced the traditional family — empathy is seen as a weakness and social capital is seen as that warm-and-fuzzy stuff that whites and black traitors practice.
Many African-Americans blame urban poverty for this crisis. But poverty does not explain away the lack of a moral compass, the source of the violence and general neglect that have turned our communities into dystopias.

When the Republican Party was in its formative stage, it had a little problem. It took most of its members from the disintegrating Whig Party, and most of the rest from northern anti-slavery Democrats. But it needed a bigger piece of the pie if it wanted to have a shot at winning the presidency. That meant that they needed to win over members of the Know-Nothing Party (officially known as the American Party). This unsavory group of people were totally unglued by immigration from Ireland and southern Europe because they were Catholic, and also because they were low-skilled and often non-conversant in English. You might call them the 19th-Century version of the Tea Party. Ironically, however, at least in the North, they were not any more likely to approve of slavery than the average citizen. It was possible to win them over to the cause of preventing the expansion of slavery, or even abolition. After all, slave labor is an even worse competitor than immigrant labor because it is cheaper.
The great early leaders of the Republican Party, like William Seward, Salmon Chase, and Abraham Lincoln, didn’t share the anti-Catholic sentiments of the Know-Nothings, but they needed their support both for the new party and for their strength within it. When Salmon Chase ran successfully for Governor of Ohio in 1855, he didn’t support any part of the Know-Nothing program, but he made sure that Know-Nothings were on the GOP ballot for most of the statewide offices.
In any case, the Republican Party has morphed in many ways since the Civil War. It now resembles nothing more than the Democratic Party of the 1850’s, while the Democratic Party is more like a hybrid of the Whigs and the northern Democrats of that time. But the Know-Nothings have stayed in the GOP to this day. They are kind of the Original Sin of the Republican Party.

Obama has “not given up” on averting sequester, McDonough says

In his State of the Union address earlier this week, McDonough said, the president laid out what he’s prepared to offer to avoid the cuts.
