CONGRATULATIONS, SERENA! Serena passes the $50 million mark in winnings, the most money earned by a female athlete.
World No. 1 Serena Williams defeated second-ranked Victoria Azarenka to win the U.S. Open women’s title on Sunday.
With the win, Williams, who turns 32 later this month, became the oldest winner of the New York grand slam.
The win caps off one of the best years of Williams’ career, in which she went 67-4 and won nine tournaments. She won the 2013 French Open as well; with the U.S. Open title, she now has 17 Grand Slam singles championships, one behind Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova on the all-time list.
Sunday’s final was a rematch of last year’s final, one Williams won, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 – another three-set instant classic.

WUH? 18MPH winds, my peeeps! LOL
The Queen still reigns.
It would be interesting to see how close Serena would be to Court’s all time record 24 Grand Slams if she had not been out of the game after her sister was murdered and her knee injury and that foot injury which induced those blood clots.
But it really doesn’t matter because Serena still endures after Hingis, Davenport, Capriati and Henin have long since retired. Now she’s number 1 against the likes of Vika and Maria.
Borrowing injury l wonder if she seriously continues to compete through the Olympics in Rio in 2016. If so she would definitely have a shot at surpassing Court’s Grand Slam record.
Viva, Serena!!
