Wolfeboro residents demand commissioner resign over racial slur

It’s time for this dude to retire. And I don’t want to hear how he’s old and set in his ways. Or he is what he is. There’s NO PLACE for this racist POS to be serving as Police Commissioner, after admitting he called a sitting UNITED STATES PRESIDENT a NIGGER, and he proudly claims it.

Nor do I want to hear how it’s his First Amendment rights. Actions and words have CONSEQUENCES!

Town’s White police Official Calls President Obama the “N” Word.

“I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse,” Copeland said in the email to his fellow police commissioners, part of which he forwarded to O’Toole. “For this, I do not apologize — he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”

KUDOS to the all the Citizens of Wolfeboro for speaking out against Copeland. Rest assured, Robert Copeland’s RACIST comments about President Obama didn’t start and won’t end with the president.

Daughter of ex-Wolfeboro official who uttered ‘n-word’ defends her father

    http://www.unionleader.com/article/20140521/NEWS06/140529873

The daughter of the Wolfeboro police official who resigned Sunday amid a nationwide furor after calling President Obama a racial slur defended her 82-year-old father as a “passionate” but “curmudgeonly” man whose private remarks shouldn’t be used to paint him as a bigot.

“My father is by no means a racist,” Kimberly Silacci, 46, said of Robert Copeland, the police commissioner who admitted to using the N-word to describe Obama in a restaurant in March. Until Sunday night, Copeland had refused to step down.

“He does have strong feelings against our president. He doesn’t care for him. In fact, he feels he is endangering our country,” Silacci said of her dad, a Republican. “That comment was an attempt to express to a very close friend some very strong feelings. But it was not to imply feelings he has for people of color. He is one of the most loving individuals.”

Copeland had admitted he used the slur, adding Obama “meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”But Silacci said her father, at the urging of family members, relented and resigned to dull the backlash against the tiny Lake Winnipesaukee resort town. Town Manager David Owen said he’s getting calls and emails from people across the country saying they’re canceling travel plans.

Silacci said her parents “really couldn’t sleep at night thinking that something he had done was hurting the town.” She said her father is a Belmont native who worked in the auto industry near Detroit and retired to Wolfeboro more than two decades ago.

“We all told him, ‘Dad you should have been more careful. What were you thinking?’” she said. “But I really feel he was so misrepresented. … Don’t we all know a curmudgeonly old individual who uses some colorful language at times?”

    *****************
How was he misrepresented? He doubled down and made himself very clear. What Wolfeboro citizens did was set an example. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. It was a teachable moment for the country.

Thank you, Wolfeboro! Thank you so much!

  2. UPDATED: Wolfeboro police commissioner resigns over use of N-word to refer to Obama; townspeople react

    http://www.unionleader.com/article/20140519/NEWS06/140519085

WOLFEBORO — The police commissioner who came under fire after slinging a racial slur about President Obama, who then refused to apologize after an enraged community demanded his removal, has resigned.

In a statement released Monday, Wolfeboro Police Commission Chair Joe Balboni, Jr., confirmed that Commissioner Bob Copeland tendered his resignation in a brief email he received at 10:34 p.m. Sunday night. The e-mail stated, “Dear Commission Chairman Balboni, I resign. Bob Copeland.”

Copeland, 82, was elected to his second three-year term in March. Praised by some for his leadership and public spirit, Copeland came under fire after resident Jane O’Toole overheard him calling President Obama a racial slur while dining at a local restaurant in March. O’Toole ultimately complained to town officials and the police commission.

Last week, more than 100 people turned out, many of whom called for Copeland’s resignation. Copeland is a retired corporate attorney who also served as an officer with the U.S. Navy.

Shortly after hearing of Copeland’s resignation, O’Toole said she looked forward to moving on with her life, and that one thing the community has learned is that one person can make a difference.

“Halleluja,” O’Toole said Monday. “I’m happy he’s done this, not only for the town but for him. He has now hopefully stopped the enormous international train [of attention] that’s affecting the town. We can get back to business in this beautiful resort community and we can stop talking about this,” she said, adding, “and, hopefully, we’ve taught our children a lesson that you can stand up and make a difference.”

Coverage of the incident has garnered international attention. On Friday, Police Chief Stuart Chase said both the dispatch center and town hall had been deluged by angry callers, some of whom mistakenly thought that the police commissioner was a sworn officer. He said calls came from as far away as Alaska and Canada.

O’Toole said she never anticipated the story would go viral and gain as much attention as it has.

“I wrote this little letter to the town and the town started a groundswell of support,” she said.

In a statement Friday, Town Manager David Owen and the Board of Selectmen called for Copeland’s resignation. Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who owns a vacation home in Wolfeboro, also called for Copeland to resign.

Commissioner Balboni said Copeland’s decision was in the best interest of the town, the commission and the police department.

    • Wow!

Wolfeboro NH has taught the country how to handle racism. They weren’t playing and didn’t back down. Copeland thought his defiance was going to intimidate them? Not this time, buddy! God bless Wolfeboro New Hampshire for restoring that glimmer of hope!

Police Commissioner Resigns But Questions Remain

Whitney White was there. She’s one of only a handful of black residents in the predominantly white town. She grew up in Brooklyn, but went to high school here at Brewster Academy and now works for the school.

I wouldn’t say that this is a racist place. Like, I feel comfortable. If I didn’t I wouldn’t have come back here. These people have become my family. I don’t have any blood or anyone here.

But White says she closely watched Copeland at the meeting.

His arms were folded, he was looking at his watch. He was tilted back in his chair. He didn’t even pay attention, he was doodling on a paper. It’s just like, you have this many people here talking to you asking you, “Are you going to apologize?” Like, just do the right thing and resign so it won’t affect the town like it’s affecting it right now. And the way he came off is like he could care less.

Police commissioner resigns in wake of Obama slur

Robert Copeland, 82, resigned Sunday night from the post to which he was re-elected in March, Board of Selectmen Chair Linda Murray said, putting to rest a controversy that drew national attention and sparked impassioned debate in this resort town of 6,300 on the shore of Lake Winnipesaukee.

“The town is pleased,” Murray said Monday. “This gives us the opportunity to move on. We are a very accepting community that really takes care of each other.”

Copeland has not returned several calls seeking comment.

Wolfeboro, N.H. Police Commissioner Robert Copeland, who called President Obama the “n-word,” has submitted his resignation, Wolfeboro police confirm.

WOLFEBORO, N.H. — Town officials confirmed Monday that the 82-year-old police commissioner who was heard publicly calling President Obama the n-word — sparking nationwide outrage — has tendered his resignation.

Robert Copeland, 82, the head of Wolfeboro’s three-member police commission, turned in his resignation to the town manager and police chief Monday morning, police officials confirmed.

His resignation comes as several of New Hampshire’s most prominent politicians — including Sens. Kelly Ayotte (R) and Jeanne Shaheen (D) and Gov. Maggie Hassan — had called for Copeland’s ouster.

  15. Wolfeboro Police Commission Full Meeting 5:15:14

    • Yahtc says:

Transcription of one of the speeches:

I am a junior at Kingswood High School. I’d like to make a couple remarks tonight about the commissioner’s racial remarks.

“And, ahead of time, I want to say that I embrace fully your First Amendment Right to say what you’ve said, and I hope everyone here in the room will embrace my First Amendment Right to say a really horrible racial term because this is a term we need to be injected into this discourse.

“From what I’ve heard Wolfeboro seems to have come to a consensus on the despicable nature of Commissioner Copeland’s racial remarks this past March. However, it’s not simply the icky nature of what he’s saying that constitutes the greater problem with him remaining in office. It’s the implications about that later comment about Mr. Obama meeting his imagined criteria for the use of the word “n……r.” [applause] Listen to his second more pernicious comment again: “I believe I did use the word, the n-word in reference to the current occupant of the White House. For this I do not apologize. He meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”

“I’d like to ask you Mr. Copeland: What do you mean by this? First thing I’d like to call attention to is the passive-aggressive nature of quote “the current occupant of the White House.” Are you willing to acknowledge the twice-elected President of the United States? [applause]

“The second question, of course, what could you possibly have been thinking when you made reference to the criteria for “n……r”?? for the criteria for hate speech?? Pardon me, but I see in your quote a bad picture of New Hampshire. I see the potential for America to see New Hampshire as a state of scared, enfeebled, old White men. [laughter and applause] old White men who watched the rise to power of the most influential Black man of our generation and see an uppity negro who fails to fall into the subservient “step and fetch it” model that you seem to be telling here sir. And that’s NOT who we are. That’s not what we are in New Hampshire; that’s not who we are in Wolfeboro;[loud applause blocks out words]

“I’d love to know: When did Mr. Obama enter the fold of being a “n……r”?? Was it when he went from a lower middle-class background to attend Harvard University? Was it when he got eight million people in this country health insurance? Was it when he came out in support of marriage rights for everyone in this country?

“Or was it simply when he had the temerity to rise above his station as a Black man?

“Your comment that there’s some criteria a Black man has to avoid, lest he be qualified as a “n…..r” portrays you as racist far better than using the term ever could have. Given the attitudes that you Mr. Copeland have so clearly broadcast and shown blatant disrespect toward the office of the Presidency, towards our African American countrymen, and collectively towards the members of this community that you have so ill-represented.

“It’s time that you take a semi-respectable bow from public life and resign your post on the commission. [applause]

“You’ve revealed yourself to the public eye, and it’s not a face that I want representing my town; it’s not a face that these folks want representing their town; and it’s not a face that we want representing our justice system.

“Please, Mr. Copeland, you’ve revealed your incapability to hold () office. Please do us a favor and come up to this microphone right now and apologize for what you’ve said. And, then, if you really want to go through with it, please resign tonight. Thank you.” [applause]

      • Was this the young guy Matthew? He was on FIRE! Everyone brought it. They kicked ass and took names. I was mesmerized. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life.

  18. Ametia says:

The citizens of Wolfeboro need to KEEP the pressure on Copeland. We can tweet and blog all we like, but the biggest influence will be the citizens to KEEP THE PRESSURE on. Tourism and buisnesses profits are at stake.

  19. After seeing all the racism directed at PBO I lost hope for the country but then… a growing hope …in New Hampshire, y’all.

    • Ametia says:

since this bigot was elected, the citizens have to keep up the pressure on this hateful man and chase his ass out. They’ve got to do better in their next selection.

This is what happens when a majority rules, though it hinges on the character, morals, ethics, and a CONSCIENCE of the one in leadership. And apparently, Copeland is not evolved.

    • Yahtc says:

      Absolutely, Ametia!

If he doesn’t resign the citizens need to start a petition and somehow get something like a recall going or whatever is legally possible!!!

It is just a good thing that this guy’s racism is no longer covert racism. He certainly became an overt racist when he was overheard saying the N-word by Jane O’Toole. I wonder what “refreshments” he had been having at the restaurant.

And, not he has admitted it in writing!

      • Ametia says:

“The Wolfeboro Police Commission is a separately elected Town board that does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Board of Selectmen or Town Manager, and there is no provision in New Hampshire State Law or the Town’s ordinances that would enable us to remove Mr. Copeland from his elected position on the Police Commission for his egregious behavior.

WOLFEBORO — The Wolfeboro Police Department’s dispatchers and the town manager’s office have fielded hundreds of phone calls and emails from as far as Alaska and Canada, reacting to reports of a police commissioner’s racist comment overheard in a restaurant.

Many of those callers, according to Wolfeboro officials, do not understand that the police commission is a separate, elected board and not made up of sworn police officers.

To clarify any murkiness, Wolfeboro Police Chief Stuart Chase held a press conference Friday afternoon, the day after hundreds of people turned out to protest Commissioner Bob Copeland’s racial slur brought to light by local resident Jane O’Toole, who complained to town officials.

Copeland was overhead at a restaurant and has acknowledged calling President Obama a “f…… n…..”, but has refused to apologize or resign.

Chase said the police and town’s phone and email inboxes have been inundated with comments responding to Copeland’s remarks.

The Wolfeboro, N.H., police commissioner who has stood by his comment calling President Obama a racial slur is facing a growing cascade of calls to step down, including from the tiny lakeside town’s most famous summer resident — one-time Obama opponent Mitt Romney.

“The vile epithet used and confirmed by the commissioner has no place in our community,” the former Bay State governor, who owns a home in the popular Granite State vacation spot, said in a statement to the Herald. “He should apologize and resign.”

Commissioner Bob Copeland, who is white, has thus far refused to resign — or even apologize — after he admitted calling Obama the N-word in an exchange overheard by another resident at a restaurant in March.

Copeland attended a packed police commission meeting Thursday where more than 100 people reportedly showed up, many to denounce the 82-year-old’s comment as the spotlight grew on the Lake Winnipesaukee resort town.

“I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse,” Copeland said in an email to his fellow members of the three-person police commission, according to The Associated Press. “For this, I do not apologize — he meets and exceeds my criteria for such.”

  32. Town Official Defends Police Commissioner Who Called Obama The N-Word

    http://thkpr.gs/1nWq1LS

On March 6, Jane O’Toole was in a Wolfeboro, N.H., restaurant when she heard a town police commissioner call President Obama “the ‘N’ word.” In an email response to O’Toole’s complaint to town officials, the commissioner, Robert Copeland, admitted to having made the comment, writing, “I believe I did use the ‘N’ word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse. For this, I do not apologize — he meets and exceeds my criteria for such,” according to a report from the Associated Press and the New York Times.

Copeland, 82, is one of three elected police commissioners in Wolfeboro, an overwhelmingly white town with 6,300 residents, about 20 of whom are black.

Commission Chairman Joseph Balboni Jr. told the Concord Monitor that O’Toole, whom he referred to as “this woman,” is “blowing it out of proportion,” and that he doesn’t plan to ask Copeland to resign. “He’s (Copeland) worked with a lot of blacks in his life,” Balboni said.

The town manager said he finds the comments “reprehensible” but doesn’t have the power to remove Copeland from office.

  34. Wolfeboro citizens to racist bigots:

  35. Folks (***looks at the media***) need to take a tip from the citizens of Wolfeboro! This is how you handle a racist bigot!
