Breaking: “Meet the Press” to change its name to “Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss”

Playbook: Chuck Todd likely to replace David Gregory on ‘Meet The Press’
Chuck Todd, the NBC News political director and chief White House correspondent, is likely to succeed David Gregory as moderator of “Meet The Press,” with the change expected to be announced in coming weeks, top political sources told POLITICO’s Mike Allen.
The move is an effort by NBC News President Deborah Turness to restore passion and insider cred to a network treasure that has been adrift since the death of Tim Russert in 2008. Gregory, his replacement, suffered from low ratings and, in recent months, an onslaught of negative press reports.
While Todd is not a classic television performer, sources said his NBC bosses have been impressed by his love of the game, which brings with it authenticity, sources, and a loyal following among newsmakers and political junkies.

What Republico declines to mention is that the decision to change the pitchman for their reeking-awful “Both Sides” bilge demonstrates NBC’s faith in it’s basic business model: selling the same old snake oil to a country already gagging on it. And so their decision to stroll 90 feet past David Gregory’s office to find another NBC Village-sanctioned “Both Sides” delivery system for their weekly “newsmakers and political junkies” Centrist porn makes perfect sense.

Texas court rules against homeschoolers who expected rapture and stopped teaching kids

A Texas court ruled this month that parents who allegedly stopped homeschooling their kids because they believed Jesus Christ was returning to Earth were not exempt from state education regulations.
According to a ruling last week by the Texas Eighth District Court of Appeals, Michael McIntyre and Laura McIntyre removed their nine children from a private school in 2004 to homeschool them.
Michael McIntyre’s twin brother, Tracy, testified that the parents used empty space in a motorcycle dealership that he co-owned as a classroom. But Tracy said that he never saw the children reading books, using computers or doing arithmetic. Instead, the children were seen playing instruments and singing.

Sentencing, by the Numbers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — IN a recent letter to the United States Sentencing Commission, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. sharply criticized the growing trend of evidence-based sentencing, in which courts use data-driven predictions of defendants’ future crime risk to shape sentences. Mr. Holder is swimming against a powerful current. At least 20 states have implemented this practice, including some that require risk scores to be considered in every sentencing decision. Many more are considering it, as is Congress, in pending sentencing-reform bills.
Risk-assessment advocates say it’s a no-brainer: Who could oppose “smarter” sentencing? But Mr. Holder is right to pick this fight. As currently used, the practice is deeply unfair, and almost certainly unconstitutional. It contravenes the principle that punishment should depend on what a defendant did, not on who he is or how much money he has.
The basic problem is that the risk scores are not based on the defendant’s crime. They are primarily or wholly based on prior characteristics: criminal history (a legitimate criterion), but also factors unrelated to conduct. Specifics vary across states, but common factors include unemployment, marital status, age, education, finances, neighborhood, and family background, including family members’ criminal history.

Robin Williams dead at 63

Oscar winner and comedian Robin Williams died this morning at 63. While his publicist wouldn’t confirm that his death was a suicide, a rep did issue this statement. “Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
Williams, who won an Oscar for his supporting role in Good Will Hunting, will reprise his role as Theodore Roosevelt in the third installment of Night at the Museum this December. He had recently signed on to reprise his beloved role as Mrs. Doubtfire in a sequel to be directed by Chris Columbus, and was last seen opposite Annette Bening in the indie film The Face of Love. His sitcom The Crazy Ones premiered on CBS last fall, but was not picked up for a second season.
According to a press release issued by the Marin County Coronor’s office, the Sheriff’s office suspects the death to be “suicide due to asphyxia.” The 9-1-1 phone call came in just before noon today.

Republicans Are Trying To Trick The American People Into Supporting Another Iraq War

There is an idiom, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me,” or as George W. Bush said, “fool me once…you fooled me, can’t get fooled again.” However one puts it, the proverbial definition is that after being tricked once, one should be very wary so a person cannot trick one again. Republican warmongers certainly understand they fooled Americans in 2003 and lied through their teeth to take the country to war against a sovereign nation with no connection to al-Qaeda, Osama bin Laden, or the terror attacks on 911. Now, they are back again lying, revising history, and attacking President Obama to trick the American people into supporting another war in Iraq because besides giving money to corporations, there is nothing Republicans love more than war; particularly against Muslims.
Over the past two days, and on the Sunday political programs, the dependable warmongers attacked the President and blamed him for everything from George W. Bush’s signing a Status of Forces agreement that removed American combat troops from Iraq, to not having a strategy to govern a democratically-elected sovereign Iraq, to failing to arm the very people wreaking havoc in Syria and Iraq. Their goal, of course, is another war in Iraq and it reveals an important fallacy John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and other Republicans fail miserably to understand; Iraq is not an American state, or territory, and this nation has no right to unilaterally insert its military into any nation’s religious war regardless this country is responsible for the current situation in Iraq. It is important to reiterate that both Iraq and Syria were stable nations prior to Republican warmongers fooled Americans into supporting the invasion of Iraq.
What is, in one sense, stunning is that the warmongers are repeating the same lies they used to convince Americans this country’s peace and security is dependent on invading Iraq. Or, as George W. Bush put it, Americans have to kill Muslims because “they hate us for our freedoms.” Perennial warmonger Lindsey Graham even went so far as to warn that without a robust military engagement in Iraq, “I think of an American city in flames because of the terrorist ability to operate in Syria and Iraq.” As reported here yesterday, to incite support for invading Iraq, Condoleezza Rice said in 2002 that “there will always be some uncertainty” about Iraq, but “We don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud.” The Bush warmongers fooled Americans once, and due to their overwhelming success at scaring Americans into supporting a war in Iraq, they are using the same tactics.

NBC To Dump David Gregory and Name Chuck Todd New Moderator Of Meet The Press

The terrible ratings for Meet The Press have finally sunk David Gregory. It is being reported that Gregory will soon be dumped and Chuck Todd will be named the new moderator of the Sunday morning institution.
Politico reported, “Chuck Todd, a political obsessive and rabid sports fan, is the likely successor to David Gregory as moderator of “Meet the Press,” with the change expected to be announced in coming weeks, according to top political sources. The move is an effort by NBC News President Deborah Turness to restore passion and insider cred to a network treasure that has been adrift since the death in 2008 of the irreplaceable Tim Russert. Although Todd is not a classic television performer guaranteed to wow focus groups, his NBC bosses have been impressed by his love of the game, which brings with it authenticity, sources, and a loyal following among newsmakers and political junkies.”
The report did add a note of caution that nothing is definite or decided, but it is apparent views the struggles of Meet The Press as a host problem. It is also being reported that Gregory will be out at NBC, and be looking for new work elsewhere. It has been widely reported that the change at Meet The Press will happen after the November midterm elections.

Hillary’s overlooked ’16 worry: Will she write off the anti-interventionist left again?

Political mischief-makers are having a lot of fun with Jeffrey Goldberg’s Hillary Clinton interview, published Saturday night for maximum Monday morning OMG predictability. I admit: that makes me instinctively inclined to minimize the fissures between Clinton and President Obama that Goldberg widened into chasms to conform with his own political worldview.
Except I can’t entirely. Because Clinton and her team are smart enough to know that’s exactly what Goldberg would do. Which means that’s what they wanted him to do.
It’s important to note that there’s almost nothing new in the Goldberg interview. We already knew that Clinton is somewhat more hawkish than Obama. Specifically, we knew that as Secretary of State she backed arming “moderate Syrian rebels,” took a maximalist approach to Iran sanctions, and was sometimes uncomfortable leaning on Benjamin Netanyahu the way Obama wanted, because she’s already told us. Here’s the best take on the way Goldberg, and more important lots of pundits, have exaggerated those differences.
Clinton also can’t be blamed for the timing of its publication – the weekend Obama ordered U.S. began airstrikes in Iraq to set back ISIS, which enraged the right and the left for different reasons and satisfied practically no one. President John McCain, making a rare appearance on the Sunday shows, was certainly not impressed. But Clinton gave the interview before the crisis escalated.
What’s most disturbing about the conversation is not its timing in relation to Iraq, but to the Israel-Gaza debacle. The person most furious about Clinton’s remarks should not be Obama, but Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been barbecued by Israeli officials and hawkish American critics for daring to pressure Benjamin Netanyahu to be a tiny bit more careful not to kill children while obliterating Hamas.
Clinton apparently felt it important to avoid every opportunity Goldberg gave her to criticize Netanyahu, occasionally sounding more hawkish than Goldberg himself, at a time when her successor was under very unfriendly political fire. Even assuming that everything she said about Palestinian leaders blowing chances at peace is true, I see no reason for such unyielding support for Netanyahu — not to mention so little compassion for Palestinian victims — except to court favor with hardline supporters of Israel. That’s disturbing.

The Brazilian Bus Magnate Who’s Buying Up All the World’s Vinyl Records

Paul Mawhinney, a former music-store owner in Pittsburgh, spent more than 40 years amassing a collection of some three million LPs and 45s, many of them bargain-bin rejects that had been thoroughly forgotten. The world’s indifference, he believed, made even the most neglected records precious: music that hadn’t been transferred to digital files would vanish forever unless someone bought his collection and preserved it.
Mawhinney spent about two decades trying to find someone who agreed. He struck a deal for $28.5 million in the late 1990s with the Internet retailer CDNow, he says, but the sale of his collection fell through when the dot-com bubble started to quiver. He contacted the Library of Congress, but negotiations fizzled. In 2008 he auctioned the collection on eBay for $3,002,150, but the winning bidder turned out to be an unsuspecting Irishman who said his account had been hacked.

Just weeks before, Murray Gershenz, one of the most celebrated collectors on the West Coast and owner of the Music Man Murray record store in Los Angeles, died at 91. For years, he, too, had been shopping his collection around, hoping it might end up in a museum or a public library. “That hasn’t worked out,” The Los Angeles Times reported in 2010, “so his next stop could be the Dumpster.” But in his final months, Gershenz agreed to sell his entire collection to an anonymous buyer. “A man came in with money, enough money,” his son, Irving, told The New York Times. “And it seemed like he was going to give it a good home.”
Those records, too, were shipped to Brazil. So were the inventories of several iconic music stores, including Colony Records, that glorious mess of LP bins and sheet-music racks that was a Times Square landmark for 64 years. The store closed its doors for good in the fall of 2012, but every single record left in the building — about 200,000 in all — ended up with a single collector, a man driven to get his hands on all the records in the world.
In an office near the back of his 25,000-square-foot warehouse in São Paulo, Zero Freitas, 62, slipped into a chair, grabbed one of the LPs stacked on a table and examined its track list. He wore wire-rimmed glasses, khaki shorts and a Hard Rock Cafe T-shirt; his gray hair was thin on top but curled along his collar in the back. Studying the song list, he appeared vaguely professorial. In truth, Freitas is a wealthy businessman who, since he was a child, has been unable to stop buying records. “I’ve gone to therapy for 40 years to try to explain this to myself,” he said.

Midterms Give Parties Chance for Sweeping Control of States

LAS VEGAS — It was over 100 degrees here the other evening, but inside a buzzing office tucked away on a stretch of gun stores and pornography shops, Democrats were staring into computer screens and talking urgently into cellphones. The stakes were high: The Nevada Senate, which Democrats control by a single seat, could very well shift into Republican hands after November.
“Hi, this is Justin Jones; I’m your state senator,” said Mr. Jones, a Democrat who won by only 301 votes two years ago. “We have a really important election campaign coming up this fall. I wanted to see if I could count on your support.”
Pause.
“Great, Ronald, that’s fantastic.”
It is not only Nevada. Republicans, who had appeared to hit a high-water mark in control of statehouses in recent years, are seeking to pick off another half-dozen chambers this year, taking advantage of President Obama’s persistent unpopularity, anxiety about the economy, and a history of anemic turnout among Democrats in nonpresidential election years. In addition, the party that controls the White House almost always loses seats in statehouses in those years.
At a time when Democrats and Republicans in control of statehouses are using their authority to push through ambitious policies that by contrast highlight the paralysis in Washington, the potential for further Republican gains has raised the possibility of deepening the policy divide between red and blue states. Republicans now control 59 of the 99 partisan legislative chambers, and have complete political control — both legislative houses and the governor’s mansion — in 23 states, while Democrats control 13. The total number of states ruled by a single political party, 36, is the highest in six decades.
Officials from both parties say there are two states that the Republicans might be able to add to the list of places where they enjoy complete control — Iowa and Arkansas. (There are no similar opportunities for Democrats.) Given that, Republicans this year are also looking to pick off individual chambers as a way of increasing their negotiating ability with Democratic governors and statehouses, or to block Democrats from passing legislation.

Wrecker-tary Of State
Hillary Clinton has officially gotten to the “I would have done a better job than President Obama” part of her triangulation phase of her “I’m not actually running for president” campaign, just in time to remind Democrats why she lost to Obama in 2008.
“The failure to help build up a credible fighting force of the people who were the originators of the protests against Assad—there were Islamists, there were secularists, there was everything in the middle—the failure to do that left a big vacuum, which the jihadists have now filled,” Clinton said.
As she writes in her memoir of her State Department years, Hard Choices, she was an inside-the-administration advocate of doing more to help the Syrian rebellion. Now, her supporters argue, her position has been vindicated by recent events.
So yes, President Hillary Clinton would have gotten us into Syria’s civil war. Awesome. Just what we needed!

There are few Republicans who Democrats hate more than Scott Walker. Two years ago, Democratic groups spent $20 million trying to recall the Wisconsin governor, unsuccessfully. He has since raised a staggering $19 million and seems untouchable. So how is Walker is in the race of his life against Democrat Mary Burke?
After winning a close election in 2011, Walker drew the ire of unions and Democratic groups after he passed Act 10, which took collective bargaining away from government workers. His 2012 recall made him the champion of fiscal conservatives and free market right wingers. So much so that a year ago, when Walker made a trip to Iowa, he ignited a storm of 2016 presidential speculation. For awhile, Walker looked poised to sail through reelection and on to bigger and brighter things.
Then federal prosecutors announced in June that Walker, his chief of staff and others around him participated in a “criminal scheme” to illegally coordinate with outside groups during his campaign and recall. That case fizzled and a special prosecutor announced that Walker was not the target of an investigation and that there was not yet sufficient evidence to charge anyone with a crime. Walker dodged a bullet, but it was only the beginning of what has become a tough summer for him.

Faced with a treacherous political environment, many Democrats are trotting out campaign ads that call for balanced budgets, tax cuts and other more traditionally GOP positions. Some of them are running in congressional districts that just two years ago broke sharply for President Barack Obama.
The Republican-flavored ads provide an early glimpse of how Democrats will wage their 2014 campaign. Democrats, hampered by Obama’s rising unpopularity and the tendency for conservatives to turn out at higher levels than liberals in midterm years, face the reality that swing congressional districts favorable to them in 2012 will be far less so in 2014.

AP NEWSBREAK: LA WOMAN PUNCHED BY PATROLMAN SPEAKS

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Marlene Pinnock says she thought she was going to die as a California Highway Patrol officer straddled her, repeatedly punching her head, on the side of a Los Angeles freeway.
During an hourlong interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, Pinnock spoke haltingly or in a whisper, occasionally putting her hands to her temples and grimacing.
Her attorney Caree Harper frequently interrupted and limited responses. Harper says Pinnock was released from the hospital last week and slurs her speech because of the beating.
Harper has filed a civil rights lawsuit for the July 1 incident that was caught on now-viral video.
The CHP says she was endangering herself by walking on Interstate 10 and the officer was trying to restrain her. The agency has pledged a rapid investigation.

GA candidate: Black female opponent can’t win by ‘dusting off copies of The Color Purple’

The Republican nominee for the position of Georgia’s state school superintendent told attendees at a breakfast meeting of the Cobb Republican Party that he will win even if his African-American Democratic opponent “dust[s] off [her] VHS copies of The Color Purple.”
According to the Marietta Daily Journal, Richard Woods was in the middle of a discussion about about the importance of bringing “true American history” back into the classrooms.
“We have to make sure that our kids know our history. They are going to know the true American history,” he said. “It will not be liberalism, it will not be progressivism, but it will be something that is based on our Founding Fathers. It will be the Constitution, it will be the Declaration of Independence, it will be the Federalist Papers. We will teach the truth, because last time I heard, the truth will set you free, OK?”

For Emmy-nominated actress Angela Bassett, the art of getting dressed for the red carpet revolves around one thing: trusting her team. “In the beginning of my career I was just excited that someone was going to do my hair or makeup,” the actress recalls. “But over time you find the right personalities and fall in love with the way different people make you look and feel. It’s an intimate experience.”
This year, Bassett is nominated for a Primetime Emmy for best supporting actress as a compassionate voodoo priestess in American Horror Story: Coven. She also recently wrapped Whitney, a biopic on the late Whitney Houston and Bassett’s directorial debut. Both will require much red-carpet prep over the coming months.
Of course, Bassett is no stranger to the ritual of getting dressed. The actress has nabbed numerous nominations and awards for films like What’s Love Got to Do With It and The Rosa Parks Story, both of which reflect a notable career of playing strong, tenacious women. (To wit: her unyielding performances in Waiting to Exhale and How Stella Got Her Groove Back.)

Consider how our definition of “neighborliness” has evolved. Once upon a time, being neighborly meant “reaching out to the people who lived next door” by, among other things, “offering to watch the kids in a pinch.”
Now, “being ‘neighborly’ means leaving those around you in peace.
