First Michelle Obama Individual Portrait To Be Shown At Smithsonian (PHOTO)
WASHINGTON — Move over Martha Washington. Martha Stewart and Michelle Obama are getting space in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington for the first time.
A new exhibit, “Americans Now,” opened Friday, featuring famous names from science, business, government and the arts.
President Barack Obama and the first lady are among those portrayed. It’s the first time Michelle Obama’s individual portrait has been shown at the gallery.
Familiar names in the collection also include actor Tom Hanks and music artists Willie Nelson and LL Cool J. Video portraits in the exhibit feature late-night comedians Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and David Letterman, as well as actor George Clooney and NBA star LeBron James. Source. August 25, 2010, 12:34 pm Man Is Held in Anti-Muslim Stabbing of Cabdriver

Updated, 1:56 p.m. | A cabdriver was attacked Tuesday by a knife-wielding passenger who made anti-Muslim remarks, the police said.
The passenger, Michael Enright, 21, of Brewster, N.Y., hailed the cab at Second Avenue and East 24th Street around 6 p.m. Tuesday, the police said. Twenty blocks north, they said, he slashed and stabbed the 43-year-old driver in his throat, face and arm.
The driver, identified by the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, a drivers’ group, as Ahmed H. Sharif, 43, stopped the cab and approached a police officer on Third Avenue near 42nd Street. Mr. Enright was arrested at the scene.
According to the taxi workers’ alliance, Mr. Sharif’s fare started the ride asking him in a friendly way if he was Muslim, whether he was observing Ramadan, and how long he had been in the United States.
After falling silent for a few minutes, the passenger began cursing and screaming, and then yelled, “Assalamu alaikum — consider this a checkpoint!” and slashed Mr. Sharif across the neck, and then on the face from his nose to his upper lip, the alliance said. (“Assalamu alaikum” — “peace be with you” — is a traditional Muslim greeting.)

Ind. ruling halts caregiver choices based on race

INDIANAPOLIS — Certified nursing assistant Brenda Chaney was on duty in an Indiana nursing home one day when she discovered a patient lying on the floor, unable to stand.
But Chaney couldn’t help the woman up. She had to search for a white aide because the woman had left instructions that she did not want any black caregivers. And the nursing home insisted it was legally bound to honor the request.
The episode, which led to a recent federal court ruling that Chaney’s civil rights had been violated, has brought to light a little known consequence of the patients’ rights movement that swept the nation’s health care system over the last two decades.
Elderly patients, who won more legal control over their quality of life in nursing homes, sometimes want to dictate the race of those who care for them. And some nursing homes enforce those preferences in their staff policies.
“When people write laws, they don’t think about these types of things very much,” said Dennis Frick, an attorney with Indiana Legal Services’ Senior Law Project.
At nursing homes, tension over patient rights and race “comes up occasionally in virtually every state in the United States,” said Steve Maag, director of assisted living and continuing care at the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging.

Barbara Walters plans to develop spinoff of ‘The View’ that’ll be geared towards men

Think of it as “The View” — with chest hair.
An insider tells us that Barbara Walters and Bill Geddie, who created the hit ABC women’s talk show and serve as its executive producers, are quietly developing a “unisex” spinoff of “The View” that will attempt to inject a male perspective
into the topics of the day.
The source adds that, if the show ever makes it past the development stage, Walters and Geddie envision it being produced in L.A., instead of New York, where the original show is based. It also would be geared for the afternoon time slots that Oprah Winfrey’s talk show is expected to relinquish next year. “They don’t want to do anything that will compete with “The View,” the source says.
Like the original, which has been running on ABC since 1997, our source says Walters and Geddie want to assemble five co-hosts who can gab about a wide variety of topical subjects. We even hear the duo have worked up a wish list of four personalities
they’d like for the show. Each has appeared at least once on “The View” and fared well with viewers and the audience.

Hot topics is what makes “The View” interesting. If they have some great male hosts it would be a success. Oprah has a niche, however it doesnt appeal to me and many others any longer as it might have 20 years ago. So, a new format would be appreciated. Go for it!
ABC carried a show similar to the View a few years ago. “The Other Half” with that dude Mario from Saved By the Bell and Dick Clark.
