When Michelle Obama and Laura Bush appear together on Saturday in Shanksville, Pa., to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, it will be the first time the two women have appeared together publicly since last year’s presidential Inauguration.
The joint presence of the current and former first lady has some wondering if the two women are attempting to set an example by bridging the political divide. Although invited separately and delivering their own keynote addresses, they’re sharing top billing for the poignant ceremony. Not that it would be a struggle for them to share the stage: Though they haven’t gone out of their way to display their mutual admiration, both Bush and Obama have been quite complimentary toward each other over the past two years.
“I think she’s doing a terrific job,” Bush told The Associated Press last year of Obama. “It’s like a club; very few people have been in that position. I sympathize with her, and I also know what it’s like.”
