Joshua 24: 15:

And if it seems evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord

Goolsbee: ‘The President Does Not Need To Take Lessons In Tax Cuts From Anyone’
    By Susie Madrak

Austan Goolsbee debuted as the new chair of the Council of Economic Advisors on This Week with Christiane Armanpour today and made a feisty (well, feisty for an economist!) defense of the president’s tax policies. I’m still waiting to hear someone bring up reports from last week in which Obama wouldn’t say he’d use his veto power if Dems compromised with Republicans over the tax cuts for the wealthy — because obviously, his “strong stand” is just posturing if he doesn’t back it up with the veto:

AMANPOUR: Hello. The world economy once looked to the American consumer to pull it out of recession. Not anymore. Now the world is looking to China and emerging economies where growth is taking hold. At his news conference on Friday, President Obama admitted that economic progress here was, quote, “painfully slow.”

Joining me this morning, the president’s top economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, who’s just been appointed chair of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers. Thank you for joining us here. Thank you very much.

I want to ask you what’s just happened. The House Minority Leader John Boehner has said that the only — that he would consider extending the middle class tax cuts, “if the only option I have is to vote for some of those tax reductions, I’ll vote for it,” he said on “Face the Nation” this morning. What is your reaction to that?

GOOLSBEE: Well, I obviously haven’t seen the comments, but I noticed the qualifier, if my only choice is. If he’s truly saying that we can, as the president called for, get a broad consensus to extend the middle class tax cuts, we should do it.

    AMANPOUR: And he’s obviously saying…

    (CROSSTALK)

GOOLSBEE: We shouldn’t hold that hostage for the argument about the tax cuts just for the very, very highest income people. So if he’s for that, I would be happy. In the past, we have seen some of these circumstances in which what appears to be the offer of doing this — the sensible thing, in the light of day there was a little bit of a feeling, well, if the president is for it, I’m against it, and then it falls apart.

AMANPOUR: All right, well, he does obviously go on to say that he’s obviously going to do everything he can to fight to make sure that all the tax cuts are extended. But if this does happen and he is going to vote for an extension of the middle class tax cuts, how do you think that those Democrats who oppose what the president wants to do will be brought on board? In other words, will they also go for just the middle class tax cuts and get this done by the midterms?

Austan Goolsbee Calls Out Chris Wallace for the Small Business Tax Lie
    By Heather

It looks like Chris Wallace also got the memo to repeat the Republican lie that half of small-business income is going to be raised if the Bush tax cuts are allowed to expire. Thankfully, Austan Goolsbee — the new chair of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers — was having none of that on Fox News Sunday this morning. He called out Wallace for his misleading numbers that I wrote about earlier when Peter Morici was repeating that same nonsense.

Good to see the latest addition to Obama’s economic team is taking on this talking point because I’m tired of them being allowed to repeat it day in and day out without it being challenged. It’s pretty pathetic when the so-called “journalist” — and I use that term very loosely when it comes to Chris Wallace or anyone at Fox, or for that matter most of cable news these days — has to be corrected by the guest for spreading Republican propaganda, but that’s pretty much the state of our pitiful corporate media these days. Lie, distort and distract

  3. Newt Gingrich: Obama May Hold ‘Kenyan, Anti-Colonial’ Worldview

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/12/gingrich-obama-kenyan-worldview_n_713686.html

Fueling the myth mongering that Barack Obama is not a natural-born U.S. citizen, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said in a recent interview that the president may follow a “Kenyan, anti-colonial” worldview.

Speaking to the National Review, Gingrich pointed to a recent Forbes article by conservative writer Dinesh D’Souza which attempted to trace the origins of Obama’s personal and political philosophies.

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” Gingrich asked. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”

“This is a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president,” Gingrich added.

Oh, Newt, Newt, what a con you are. Study Barack Obama’s behavior all you like. He’s the President of the United States of America now.

I would agree that President Obama is outside of Newt and his white bretheran’s comprehension. PBO is not shuckin & buckin, sayin’ yes sir massa, and going all negro-natti on them. He is an accomplished SCHOLAR, adoring husband, father, and the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

And Newt and nem didn’t see him coming, Newt and nem have lived in an alternate universe of white supremacy/entitlement/privilege, and therefore can NOT comprehend or accept the fact that Black men and women have far more SUPERIOR intelligence, far more grace, integrity, and morals than he and his kin will ever hope to possess.

Boehner backs tax cuts limited to middle class

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer Douglass K. Daniel, Associated Press Writer – 2 mins ago

WASHINGTON – House Republican leader John Boehner says he would support extending tax cuts only for middle-class earners even though he considers it “bad policy” to exclude the highest-earning Americans from tax relief during a recession.
One of President Barack Obama’s chief economic advisers said Sunday he was happy that Boehner, R-Ohio, isn’t willing to hold hostage an extension of tax cuts for those earning under $250,000 a year, or more than 97 percent of earners, to try to gain a continuation of breaks enjoyed by the wealthiest.

With congressional elections less than two months away, both parties would like to try to score points with voters generally unhappy with Congress. Democrats are bearing the brunt of voter anger over a stubborn recession, a weak job market and a high-spending government, giving the GOP an opening for taking back control of the House and possibly the Senate.

Axelrod hits Boehner over NY Times lobbying story
By Ben Geman – 09/12/10 11:25 AM ET

White House senior adviser David Axelrod on Sunday used a New York Times report on House Minority Leader John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) close ties to corporate lobbyists to allege that Republicans would further harm the economy if they regain control on Capitol Hill.

“This morning we read that the lobbying community has rallied to his Boehner-for-Speaker campaign and spent millions of dollars so that they can go back to writing the rules themselves,” Axelrod said on NBC’s Meet the Press, adding that the lobbyists’ view is “we want him in power so that we are in power.”

“We don’t want to go back to the same policies and the same practices that drove our economy into a ditch, that punished the middle class, and that led us to this catastrophe” Axelrod said.

Boehner would likely become House Speaker if Republicans regain the House. “[Boehner] maintains especially tight ties with a circle of lobbyists and former aides representing some of the nation’s biggest businesses, including Goldman Sachs, Google, Citigroup, R. J. Reynolds, MillerCoors and UPS,” the Times reported.

Boehner’s office has strongly criticized the story, alleging it “ignores basic facts.”

NO, he can’t. President Obama can’t reverse the unemployment numbers by Election Day. He can’t get even a modest new stimulus bill past the Party of No, and even if he could, there would be few jobs to show for it until (maybe) 2011. Nor can he rewrite the history of his administration. Its signal accomplishments to date are an initial stimulus package that was overrun by the calamity at hand and a marathon health care battle as yet better known for its unseemly orgy of backroom wrangling than its concrete results. While that brawl raged, the White House seemed indifferent to the mounting number of Americans being tossed onto the Great Recession scrapheap.

  9. Quran Destroyer Randall Terry Dismisses 9/11 Families’ Concerns About Politicizing Terror Anniversary

    http://thinkprogress.org/2010/09/11/quran-destroyer-randall-terry-dismisses-911-families-concerns-about-politicizing-terror-anniversary/#comments

While Rev. Terry Jones ultimately canceled his plans to burn Qurans at his Gainesville, FL church today, and said he will “not ever” attempt the stunt again, infamous Christian-right activist Randall Terry followed through on his scheme to destroy the Islamic holy book, tearing pages from an English copy this morning in front of the White House.

Jones’ plan sparked huge protests in Afghanistan and other Muslim countries, but Terry wasn’t fazed by military leaders’ warnings that burning the Quran could endanger U.S. troops, explaining, “The only reason I will not burn it at the White House is because to burn anything on the Capitol grounds is a felony.” Terry said he stood “in solidarity” with others who planned to destroy Qurans today, including far-right Christian activists in Springfield, TN, Amarillo, TX, and Cheyenne, WY.

As ThinkProgress has noted, some families of 9/11 victims have condemned the politicization of the anniversary of the terror attacks, saying protests related to the proposed Islamic community center near ground zero today “disrespect the memories of our loved ones on this sacred day.” When asked about this by ThinkProgress, Terry dismissed the victims’ families concerns, offering an insincere “sorry” and adding that he wouldn’t “let the tail wag the dog:”

  10. Imam Feisal Rauf: Moving Islamic Cultural Center Would Have ‘Fueled Terrorism’

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/12/imam-feisal-rauf-moving-center-terrorism_n_713659.html

Making a relatively rare television appearance on Sunday, Imam Feisal Rauf, the man behind the controversial Islamic cultural center in downtown Manhattan, said that if he were forced to move the project it could spur terrorist activity among radicals abroad.

“My major concern with moving it is that the headline in the Muslim world will be ‘Islam is under attack in America,'” said Rauf. “This will strengthen the radicals in the Muslim world, help their recruitment, this will put our people — our soldiers, our troops, our embassies, our citizens — under attack in the Muslim world and we [would] have expanded and fueled terrorism.”
