President Obama to Deliver Back-to-School Speech September 14
This post is re-published from Whitehouse.gov.

Washington, D.C. — As students begin their school year, President Barack Obama will deliver his second annual Back-to-School Speech at 1:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, September 14 at Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School in Philadelphia, PA, a 2010 National Blue Ribbon School. The President’s Back-to-School Speech is an opportunity to speak directly to students across the country. Last year, President Obama encouraged students to study hard, stay in school, and take responsibility for their education.

“Every single one of you has something you’re good at. Every single one of you has something to offer. And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what that is. That’s the opportunity an education can provide,” President Obama said to students last year.

President Obama’s Back-to-School Speech will be live streamed on WhiteHouse.gov. For more information about watching the speech, visit http://www.whitehouse.gov/back-to-school. This event is by invitation only, and additional media coverage details will be released soon.

Plouffe slams Gingrich’s line of attack
    Posted: 09:07 PM ET

(CNN) – The architect of President Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign Monday sharply criticized remarks made by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich over the weekend that President Obama follows a “Kenyan, anti-colonial” worldview.

“Two words that come to mind are ‘sad’ and ‘reprehensible,'” David Plouffe told CNN’s John King on John King USA.

“It makes me think . he’s probably pretty sure he’s going to run for president,” Plouffe added, suggesting Gingrich may have been trying to appease the most conservative elements of the Republican Party.

Gingrich has recently made a number of trips to earlier primary states, fueling speculation that a 2012 bid for the Republican presidential nomination is on his mind.

The former House speaker made the comments in an interview with the National Review that was published over the weekend on their website.

“This is a person who is fundamentally out of touch with how the world works, who happened to have played a wonderful con, as a result of which he is now president,” he said, adding later “I think he worked very hard at being a person who is normal, reasonable, moderate, bipartisan, transparent, accommodating – none of which was true. In the Alinksy tradition, he was being the person he needed to be in order to achieve the position he needed to achieve…He was authentically dishonest.”

“What if [Obama] is so outside our comprehension, that only if you understand Kenyan, anti-colonial behavior, can you begin to piece together [his actions]?” he also said. “That is the most accurate, predictive model for his behavior.”

David Plouffe: “One on one”Posted in Obama News | @ September 13th, 2010

David Plouffe just sent the following email to supporters:
Over the next two months, Organizing for America volunteers like you will talk to millions of voters about what’s at stake this fall.

Our Vote 2010 goals are ambitious — but meeting them is the only way President Obama will be able to continue moving our country forward with strong allies in Congress.

We know these one-on-one conversations are incredibly effective. In 2008, volunteers like you turned out millions of voters — many for the first time. And in our increasingly fractured digital environment — when so much competes for our time and attention — conversations between friends, family members, and neighbors remain the most trusted and impactful method of political persuasion.

I have a tremendous amount of confidence in this strategy — and you — because I saw how it changed politics in 2008. You connected personally with more voters than any campaign in history — and we won.

This year, the strategy is the same.

Senate Republicans say they’ll block tax increase

By ANDREW TAYLOR, Associated Press Writer Andrew Taylor, Associated Press Writer – 47 mins ago
WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama’s plan to raise taxes on wealthier people while preserving cuts for everyone else appears increasingly likely to founder before Election Day.
Senate GOP leaders declared on Monday that Republicans are, to a person, opposed to legislation that would extend only middle-class tax relief — which Obama has repeatedly promised to deliver — if Democrats follow through on plans to let tax rates rise for the wealthiest Americans. The GOP senators forcefully made their case one day after House Republican leader John Boehner suggested he might vote for Obama’s plan if that ends up the only option.

Both Republicans and Democrats are using the looming expiration of Bush-era tax cuts as a defining battle in elections to determine control of Congress.

It would take numerous Democratic defectors to pass the Republicans’ version — extending all the Bush tax cuts — or the issue could be left for a postelection congressional session if Republicans block the measure with a filibuster. Obama last week declined to say whether he would veto a bill that preserved the tax breaks for the wealthy.

Study: ‘People Who Matter’ To Sunday Talk Shows Are ‘White, Male, Senior, and Republican’

NBC’s Meet the Press, CBS’s Face the Nation, Fox News Sunday, CNN’s State of the Union, and ABC’s This Week are the five major Sunday talk shows that aim to bring “a diverse group of voices” that “reflect the cultural, economic, and political landscape” of the U.S. However, according to a new study published by George Mason University School of Law this month, the Congressional guests featured in 2009 were anything but diverse, failing not only to represent the demographics of the American population but also the diversity of Congress. In fact, according to the study, the congressional voice was disproportionately represented by one type of guest in 2009: “white male, senior, and Republican”:

White House Considers Naming Warren ‘Interim’ CFPB Head
    American Banker | Tuesday, September 14, 2010
    By Cheyenne Hopkins

WASHINGTON — The White House is considering appointing Elizabeth Warren as interim head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, bypassing a likely Senate confirmation battle, according to sources.

Under the Dodd-Frank regulatory reform law signed July 21, the Treasury Department has the power to appoint a temporary head of the new agency until a permanent one is nominated and confirmed.

By naming Warren interim head, the White House would sidestep — for now — a likely fight over her nomination. Obama can still choose to formally nominate Warren sometime next year, or select another candidate if she becomes too polarizing.

Warren supporters are urging the White House to make the appointment quickly, which would give the Harvard professor time and authority to get the new agency running.

“We would like the appointment fast-tracked because of the need to establish the bureau and set standards for the industry,” said David Berenbaum, chief program officer for the National Community Reinvestment Coalition.

Sources cautioned the White House has not made a final decision yet and could still pursue other options, including nominating Warren directly without an interim appointment or choosing an alternative candidate.

  15. Obama hails nation’s black colleges

    http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0910/42071.html

The president said that HBCUs are on the front line of his goal to make the United States the world leader in college graduation rates

“We can’t get there unless all of you are improving your graduation rates,” Obama said. “We can’t get there unless all of you are continuing to make the dream of a college education a reality for more students. We want to help you do that in every way that we can.”

Obama praised the organizations — all of which were established at a time when most U.S. colleges and universities did not admit African-Americans — for their history of working to combat illiteracy in the face of discrimination.

House Side Of Capitol Evacuated After Suspicious Substance Found In Chamber

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/09/13/house-side-of-capitol-eva_n_714782.html

WASHINGTON — Police briefly evacuated part of the Capitol building Monday after a powdery substance was found in the visitors’ gallery overlooking the House chamber.

Capital Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said the gallery and surrounding areas were cleared “out of an abundance of caution” while police investigated the substance. It was reopened less than an hour later. Schneider said the nature of the substance was unclear but it was determined not to be hazardous.

Reporters in the House press office overlooking the chamber were also asked to move to other areas of the building, which were not affected. Schneider said there were only a few House pages in the gallery when the substance was discovered.
