Jeffrey Osborne (born March 9, 1948) is an American funk and R&B musician, songwriter, and former lead singer of the band, L.T.D.
Osborne was born in Providence, Rhode Island. He is the youngest of 12 children and is part of a musical family. He has five brothers and six sisters, some of whom went on to have music careers (his brother Billy was an L.T.D. bandmate). Osborne’s father, Clarence “Legs” Osborne, was a popular trumpeter who played with Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington and died when Osborne was thirteen.[1] Osborne started his music career in 1970 with a band called Love Men Ltd., who would later become known as L.T.D.[2] The band recorded hit singles such as “(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again“, “Concentrate On You,” “Love Ballad” and “Holding On (When Love Is Gone)“. At first, Osborne was a drummer, but then became the lead vocalist. He left L.T.D. in late 1980 to start a solo career. His solo success includes five gold and platinum albums.

New Post-Kaiser-Harvard poll highlights Democrats’ problem with senior voters

President Obama and the Democrats have been lavishing attention on young voters, investing millions in an effort to reenergize a group that helped elect him two years ago. In a final push to close what polls identify as an enthusiasm gap, the president has embarked on a youth tour, including an appearance Tuesday at George Washington University and another planned for Thursday on MTV.
But a similar investment in older voters – especially those not particularly motivated right now to go to the polls – might have been just as valuable.
Among seniors who say they are very interested in the upcoming election, 51 percent prefer to see Republicans in control of the next Congress while 40 percent say they want Democrats in charge. Among all other seniors, it’s about the reverse: 51 percent say they want Democrats to control Congress and 37 percent say Republicans.
The findings come from a major survey conducted by The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University. The survey measured attitudes about the federal government and included some questions about the upcoming elections.
The findings show a generational divide working against the Democrats this fall. If the midterms are in part a referendum on the size, scope and effectiveness of the federal government, older voters appear poised to deliver a rebuke to the Obama administration.
Older voters – Democrats, Republicans or independents – are more pessimistic in their assessments of Washington’s performance than are younger voters. Based on historical voting patterns, they are also more likely to turn out in November – a potentially toxic combination for the Democrats.

Police: Sharron Angle supporter cited for pepper spray incident outside Harry Reid rally

Two people were cited for disorderly conduct outside Valley High School on Tuesday night during President Bill Clinton’s appearance at a rally for Senate Majority Harry Reid, Clark County School District Police said.
Lt. Ken Young said a man in costume supporting Reid’s opponent, Republican Sharron Angle, allegedly dispensed pepper spray into a group of people outside the high school. An argument on the sidewalk ensued, and two people, including the Angle supporter, were cited for disorderly conduct, he said.
No one was injured in the incident, which happened shortly after 10 p.m., police said.
Last month, a fight broke out among audience members who attended a forum at Faith Lutheran Jr./Sr. High School that included Angle and taped responses from Reid.

Foreclosure Probe Spans 49 States
Forty-nine states have joined an investigation into mortgage companies that allegedly mishandled documents and broke foreclosure laws in reclaiming houses from homeowners. Alabama was the only state that didn’t sign on to the probe, which will look into whether employees of lenders made false statements or improperly filled out foreclosure paperwork. Ally Financial’s GMAC mortgage unit, Bank of America, and JPMorgan Chase have all stopped foreclosure proceedings after it was revealed that their employees had pushed through thousands of foreclosures without reading the documents, while Wells Fargo and Citigroup have declined to do so, saying they had not made such errors.

The following is the transcript of “The Tom Joyner Morning Show’s” interview with First Lady Michelle Obama, which aired this morning.
TOM JOYNER: Good morning, Ms. First Lady. How are you, Michelle Obama?
FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA: I am doing great, Tom. It’s good to hear your voice. Is Sybil …
TOM: It’s good to hear yours, too.
SYBIL WILKES: Good morning.
Good morning. I’m so happy to be talking to you all, you don’t know how. (Laughter.)
SYBIL: Not as happy as we are to have you with us. Thank you for joining us.
TOM: Well, we’ve got the mid-terms coming up.
We do. We’ve got – this is an important couple of weeks coming up. And this, Tom, is something that we talked about when Barack was running two years ago.
TOM: Yes, you were asking me did I think black people were going to show up.
Yes, yes.
TOM: And I said, “Don’t worry, when you get to South Carolina …”
Right. (Laughter.)
TOM: “… we’re going to show up.”
Yes, indeed. And we showed up big time. But we also talked about the fact that this election wasn’t about putting one man in the White House. And I know I said this time and time again – I said, “Barack can’t do this alone.” It takes a village to change a country. And we’re at that point now where we’re in the mid-terms, and a lot of people don’t pay attention to the mid-terms because they think, well, when a president is elected, that’s what an election is all about. But this is critical because Congress shapes the laws, and the president can only sign the bills that come across his desk that are passed by Congress. And this is the time when we’re electing folks to office that are either going to work with the president or they’re going to work against him.
TOM: Two years later – two years after we had that conversation, here we are, and people are saying that black people are not going to show up to vote.
Right.
TOM: And I say they’re wrong. I say the news reporters, the media is wrong. I think that black people are going to show up at the polls in record numbers.
Well, I agree with you, because over this – through this campaign and watching this presidency, there’s so much that these polls don’t get right, because if we had listened to the polls then there’s no way we’d have bothered to run, because at no point in the campaign did they believe that Barack Obama was ever going to be president of the United States. There wasn’t a single poll that ever predicted that.
So, we know that we have to listen to our own communities, but we still have to educate folks. We have to make sure people understand why this election is just as important as the presidential election, because, as I said, if Barack doesn’t have a team of people working with him, it makes it just that more difficult to continue the change that has already happened.
And even though folks are still hurting in this economy, so much has been accomplished, Tom, in such a short period of time. Everything from health care reform to financial regulation reform, tax cuts for working-class folks – you name it. The Recovery Act helped keep millions of people in their jobs, and this means a lot of teachers who weren’t laid off because of Recovery Act funds.
So, we’ve got a lot of work left to do, and that’s why this election is important because it’s not about what we’ve done for the past two years – and we’ve done a lot. It’s about what we have to continue to do to keep the change alive. So we just need to make sure that people know this one is just as important.
SYBIL: I think that’s really interesting, and something that perhaps we could use for the next three weeks, is “Keep change alive.”
Right, right. I think Deval Patrick said it and Barack quoted him – he said you have to. There are folks who want to fight for the change, but you can’t give up the fight. He put it in a way that was much more eloquent than that – oh, we have to change the guard and guard the change. That’s what he said. It’s time for us to guard the change. And this election is about people who want to reverse everything that was accomplished.
There is an agenda out there to take away those health care reform benefits. There are people who want to take that back. There are people who want to reverse the movements that we’ve got on the banks. People want to take tax cuts away from working class folks. So, I mean, we’re at a point now where we’re still defining what this country is. And this time is critical.
We also – like we did in the presidential – one of the things that surprised people was that we got people out to vote early. Early voting is critical because you don’t want to wait until the last minute. People are busy. There’s no telling what will happen on Election Day. It could be weather. You could be sick. You could be – babysitter, you name it. Anything could happen. But early voting is something you can do at your convenience. It starts now.
I want to encourage people to do early voting because that’s really the part that the polls don’t check. So folks have to be fired up, just like they were two years ago, because the same things are at stake.
SYBIL: Will you be bringing Mrs. Robinson with you to vote?
No, she’s staying with the girls. (Laughter.) She’s got her post here. But I’m sure she’s early voting. She’s always on top of her voting. She does not play.
SYBIL: And that’s where you got yours from, right?
My what?
SYBIL: Your whole political initiative.
Well, you know, my parents were always conscientious folks. I mean, my father was a precinct captain for a while, and that was just something we always knew you had to do. It was never a question. And we have to be at that place again.
It is not just about voting once and then waiting for the change to happen. We have to vote every time. As you know, we’ve got a mayoral race coming up. We’ve got city council members coming up. We’ve got a governors race. All of that makes a difference in the direction this country will take and the voices who will lead that change.
So, once again, we have the power. We’ve got this man in office. I think we’re all proud of Barack and his accomplishments. Everybody I know in our communities are praying for us. Every day we feel that. And let me just tell your listeners that it means all the world to us to know that there are prayer circles out there and people who are keeping the spirits clean around us.
TOM: Yes, they are.
So, that means a great deal. So, we’ve come a long way, but we got to keep it coming. And this election is going to make a statement about whether Barack’s power and support is as deep. There are people who are questioning whether his support is as deep. They want to make out like, well, this is just a one-time thing, right?
And – yes, go ahead, Tom.
TOM: How is your “Keep It Moving” …
Oh, “Let’s Move.”
TOM: “Let’s Move.”
“Let’s Move” is going really well. Thank you for asking, Tom.
TOM: I should know, you know …
Yes, right, well, you know you – yes, Donna is doing it up. She has been – she is a member of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, and she has been a tremendous support to us. But “Let’s Move” is going really well. And it’s an issue that is so critical to the African-American community because 40 percent of our kids are overweight or obese, and one in two – half of our kids – will develop diabetes at some point in their lives. And I’ve always said that we have so many issues facing our community – crumbling schools and unsafe neighborhoods and folks just trying to pay the bills – that often time, we put our health on the back burner. But we can’t be in the position where we’ve made so many strides over these decades, where our grandparents and our great grandparents have sacrificed, only to be at a point where one of the biggest threats to our kids will be their own health.
So we got to get a handle on this and make sure that this issue is at the top of our agenda. But things are going really well.
SYBIL: In this program, are you seeing success stories?
We are seeing – we’ve gotten so many major commitments. We’ve got schools all over the country that are working to become U.S. Healthier Schools, which means they’re finding ways to change the quality of the food in their schools. They’re incorporating nutrition education.
We’ve got some of the largest grocery manufacturers, some of the food producers, the folks who produce what we eat, they’ve agreed to eliminate a trillion calories from their food products over the next several years.
The American Academy of Pediatrics – all those doctors are signed up. They’re going to start making sure that we check BMI at every well child visit and give families prescriptions.
So, everybody is stepping up. Major League Baseball has made some commitments. They’re going to get more kids involved in the President’s Award on Healthy Lifestyles. The NFL – I had a wonderful day in New Orleans kicking off “Let’s Move” there.
SYBIL: I saw that. You were good. The Bears could use you!
Catching my passes. (Laughter.) I mean, you know, I’ve got to keep it – got to keep myself going. (Laughter.)
TOM: And you are in great shape. I was laughing a minute ago because I had a flashback. After Donna came back from the White House, and you all were jumping rope, she said you wore her out. She had to stop. (Laughter.) And you were still going.
See, I have to show – see, everybody knows Donna is in shape. People are like, the First Lady, I don’t know. You see kids looking at – she can’t jump rope! I was like, I can jump rope. (Laughter.)
TOM: She said you wore her out. She came into the house … whew. (Laughter.) Whew.
Well, I think our message to kids is if the First Lady can do it, we can do it. So, those are some of my most fun times – when I’m running around on the South Lawn with a bunch of kids from D.C., or we’re in the garden.
That’s another thing that has taken off. More communities are starting to plant community gardens. We’re doing some work on affordability and accessibility. We’re going to try to get more resources into neighborhoods that don’t have adequate quality produce in their communities. So we’re making some important strides.
But most of all, awareness has increased. I mean, people are – we’re having a conversation about this, and we’re doing it in a way that doesn’t place blame on families because people are struggling. And it is hard to exercise when you don’t have safe streets to play on, and your schools have eliminated recess. It is hard on families. So this isn’t about blame; it’s just about let’s figure out those small steps we can take and how we can support families in getting our kids in better shape.
And that means we have to start moving as grown-ups. They’ll take our lead. That’s another reason why I get out there because I want my girls to see me exercising and sweating and moving around and knowing that that’s a part of life. And we, as parents, have to be the role models for our kids in that way. So, things are doing well.
SYBIL: Are you going to be using the garden for your Thanksgiving dinner? You going to be pulling some greens?
You know, we’re going to – we have a harvest coming up. And I’ll be pulling some greens. (Laughter.) Shoot, we’ve got some sweet potatoes in there. We’ve actually got pumpkins this time around. But, yes, we’ll be definitely – we’ve got a harvest going on where we’ll bring kids from local communities. They help us pull up the fall harvest. And I think we’re doing that in a couple of weeks.
And we’re going to definitely use some of that food for Thanksgiving dinner and some of the important occasions that we have here with the president and his many interesting guests because he tends to be busy too. So, yes, we’re making great use out of that garden.
TOM: Well, enjoy your trip home.
I will, you all. It is so good to talk to you all. I will – everybody, I hope you’re ready. I want to see some folks out there.

Even before Elizabeth Warren and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau take on the most deceptive, exploitative consumer rip-offs in the financial services industry, Republicans are maneuvering to make the mission extremely difficult — if not downright impossible.
Witness House Republican efforts to deny funding to the Treasury Department and Warren during the period when they are tasked with getting the bureau up and running. And Sen. Richard Shelby, the ranking Republican on the Senate Banking Committee, said he’d want to “revisit” — meaning emasculate — the financial reform bill if the GOP regains the majority in Congress in November. “The consumer agency bothers me the most,” Shelby said. “I thought the creation of it and the way it was created was a mistake.”
That’s why the remarkable coalition that took on the financial titans during the reform debate, and then successfully waged a campaign for Warren’s appointment to build the bureau, now needs to reinvigorate its effort to create a truly strong and independent agency.
