(CNN) – Former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin seemed to have the 2008 election – and, specifically, first lady Michelle Obama – on her mind during a speech at a conservative forum Thursday night.
“You know, when I hear people say, or had said during the campaign that they’ve never been proud of America, haven’t they met anybody in uniform yet?” Palin opined during her remarks at a Liberty and Freedom Foundation forum in San Jose, California.
“I get tears in my eyes when I see that young man, that young woman, walking through the airport in uniform – you too – so proud to be American,” Palin said to enthusiastic applause.
During her husband’s presidential campaign, Michelle Obama sparked outrage among conservatives when she said at a campaign stop that, “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country, because it feels like hope is making a comeback… not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change.”
After a media firestorm ensued, Obama sought to clarify her comments, saying, “What I was clearly talking about is that I am proud in how Americans are engaging in the political process. I mean everyone has said what I said, in that we haven’t seen these record numbers of turnouts, people who are paying attention, going to rallies, watching debates.”
“For the first time in my lifetime I am seeing people rolling up their sleeves in way that I haven’t seen and really trying to figure this out, and that’s the source of pride I was talking about,” she continued.
The remarks nonetheless became a linchpin for conservative pundits, who accused Obama of being unpatriotic.

Obama says federal jobs may stay vacant, doesn’t rule out furloughs

Facing Republican complaints about big government and federal salaries, President Obama said Friday that agencies might leave some vacancies unfilled as his administration looks for ways to save money.
He did not rule out furloughing employees, as has happened in some states, but he warned that such action could result in loss of services.
Speaking to members of the Trotter Group, an organization of black columnists, Obama deflected complaints, by Republicans on Capitol Hill and conservative think tanks, that federal employees are overpaid.
He said his team has examined pay levels, “and the data we get back indicates that high-skilled workers in government are slightly underpaid. Lower-skilled workers are slightly overpaid relative to the private sector.
“That’s not surprising,” he added, “because it’s a unionized workforce.”
Nonetheless, Obama said that just as people and companies across the country have had to be cautious about spending, “government should have to tighten its belt as well. We need to do it in an intelligent way. We need to make sure we do things smarter, rather than just lopping something off arbitrarily without having thought it through.”

Oprah To Fly ‘Daily Show’ Audience To Stewart’s DC ‘Sanity’ Rally

Oprah is famous for giving her audience surprise gifts, but Thursday night she extended that generosity to Jon Stewart’s “Daily Show” audience as well.
Oprah appeared via satellite on “The Daily Show” to lend her support for Stewart’s upcoming “Rally to Restore Sanity” in Washington, DC.
“I think that we need a little bit more sanity in the world,” Oprah said. “I wanted to show my support for you, Jon, and also for your audience. So here’s what I did: I had my staff sneak into your studio early this morning with a little gift.”
Audience members were then told to look under their seats, where they found red envelopes featuring tickets to Stewart’s rally.
“You’re going to the rally! You’re going to the rally! You’re going to the rally! Everybody’s going to the rally!” Oprah exclaimed. “Now get out there and restore some sanity!
Hmmph! Where the Hell was Oprah for the One Nation rally? The rally sure was CIVIL and SANE.

In the publicity sheet that St. Martin’s Press has been sending out to spur interest in General Hugh Shelton’s new memoir, Without Hesitation: The Odyssey of an American Warrior, the last highlight is a doozy: “A high-ranking cabinet member suggests intentionally flying an American airplane on a low pass over Baghdad so as to guarantee it will be shot down, thus creating a natural excuse to reltaliate and go to war.”
Turns out the incident took place during the Clinton administration, and Shelton’s response to the suggestion…well, let’s just say it more than lives up to the title of the memoir.

Shelton sets the scene at a “small, weekly White House breakfast” that served as regular “informal” meetings that “encouraged brainstorming of potential options on a variety of issues.”

In an opinion piece in The Washington Post, outgoing D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and outgoing chancellor of the D.C. Public Schools Michelle Rhee, describe their efforts to fix the district’s public schools and send out a call to action for the new district and schools administrations. They write:
“We have laid a foundation, but the hardest steps are yet to come. Despite tremendous progress across all eight wards, there is still an incredibly long way to go before we can say that the school system is providing every child with the education that is theirs by right in this country. If the past 3½ years are any indication of how much persistence it will take to get this right, we know this work will remain the central challenge the city will face on its way to long-lasting economic stability, vibrant communities in every neighborhood and a high quality of life for all who live here.”
When it came to ensuring broad support for our work, we fell short. The lessons learned from that weakness, however, can become a strength. We reach out today to ask the entire community to embrace the school reform efforts in the months and years ahead. We know how determined the people of this city are, and if we collectively support Gray, his staff and the DCPS team with all the will and energy we can summon, there will be no stopping our children.”

Federal judge lets 20 states’ health-care lawsuit move forward

A federal judge ruled Thursday that a lawsuit brought by 20 states challenging the health-care overhaul law can move forward.
The decision by Judge Roger Vinson of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida to reject the Obama administration’s request to throw out the case was expected. During oral arguments over the government’s motion to dismiss last month, Vinson had indicated that he was likely to rule at least partly in the states’ favor. His ruling is limited to the plaintiffs’ standing to mount the case, as opposed to its merits – which will be discussed at a summary judgment hearing scheduled for Dec. 16.
But Vinson’s opinion delineates the issues over which the states – and two private citizens and a business group also party to the suit – will and will not be allowed to make arguments in what could shape up to be one of the most serious of about a dozen pending legal challenges to President Obama’s signature legislative achievement.
Specifically, while dismissing most of the states’ other complaints, Vinson ruled that they can contest whether the law’s “individual mandate” requiring virtually all Americans to buy health insurance exceeds Congress’s constitutional authority to regulate commerce and make laws “necessary and proper” for carrying out its powers

Obama to meet Condoleezza Rice Friday
WASHINGTON (AFP) – US President Barack Obama will welcome former secretary of state and national security advisor Condoleezza Rice back to the White House on Friday.
Obama has sharp foreign policy differences with Rice, a Republican who was a key figure in the run-up to the Iraq war under George W. Bush’s administration which Obama always opposed.
The president also frequently criticized the former White House team for neglecting the Afghan war, as he formulated a new strategy last year.
But Obama and Rice are both racial pioneers. He is America’s first African American president and she is the highest-ranking black woman in the history of the executive branch of the US government.
In an interview on MSNBC on Wednesday, Rice said that comments by former Republican House of Representatives speaker Newt Gingrich that Obama’s worldview was “anti-colonial” owing to his African heritage were “over the top.”
Rice, who has returned to academic life, is currently promoting a memoir and will meet Obama in the Oval Office

2010: The year of politicking insanely

Okay, I want to make sure I understand. Two years ago, with the nation facing a host of complex and difficult problems, voters put a bunch of thoughtful, well-educated people in charge of the government. Now many of those same voters, unhappy and impatient, have decided that things will get better if some crazy, ignorant people are running the show? Seriously?
I thought I had come to terms with the whole Tea Party thing, I really did. I convinced myself that it could be analyzed as a political phenomenon, an expression of disaffection, a reaction to economic, social and demographic change that leaves some Americans anxious and unsettled, blah blah blah. But then came Wednesday’s debate in Delaware — featuring Christine O’Donnell, uncut and uncensored — and all my rationalizations crumbled. This isn’t politics, it’s insanity.
I know that O’Donnell is likely to lose to Democrat Chris Coons. But until Election Day — at least — we’re supposed to take her seriously as the Republican candidate for the United States Senate. Sorry, but I just can’t do it anymore.

I suspect I am one of the few Americans still alive and modestly in possession of his faculties who knew President Obama’s father, and I see nothing of the man I knew in Dinesh D’Souza’s Oct. 8 Washington Forum commentary, “The dreams from his father.”
Barack Obama Sr. was a graduate student in the economics department at Harvard while I was in the government department as a PhD student. He was in several of my wife’s classes (she was studying in the econ department), and we both got to know him. I can’t claim to have been close to Obama, but we became sufficiently familiar socially to invite him to our wedding in New York City in June 1964. We gave him the phone number of my wife’s parents in Manhattan to call in case he had trouble finding a place to stay.
