Wiki: The group was started in 1976 in White Plains, New York by trumpeter Duke Jones (who left the band prior to their first recordings), drummer Porter Carroll Jr., bassist Clifford Archer, percussionist and flautist Joseph Phillips, and three brothers: David Lewis (vocals and guitar), Wayne Lewis (keyboards and vocals), and Jonathan Lewis (percussion and trombone). Other members of the band were lead singer Sharon Bryant (who was later replaced by Barbara Weathers), trumpeter William Sudderth, and saxophonist Damon Rentie (who was replaced by Koran Daniels). In 1977 the band came to Westwood, California and performed on the nightclub scene under the name “Newban” which was changed on their debut hit single.
Throughout the late 70s and early 80s, Atlantic Starr scored several hits on the R&B charts. However, significant crossover success (onto the pop charts) didn’t come until halfway into the 80s, with the release of their As The Band Turns album, and the single “Secret Lovers.” By this time, the band had pared itself down to a quintet, consisting of the three Lewis brothers, Phillips, and Weathers. In 1987, the band solidified their pop success by scoring a #1 pop (and R&B) hit with “Always,” a slow jam off their album All In The Name Of Love. Following this success, Weathers left for a solo career, and she was replaced by Porscha Martin for the band’s next album, 1988’s We’re Movin’ Up. Although this album wasn’t quite as successful as its predecessor, it did produce another #1 R&B hit with “My First Love.”

Republican Party leaders in central Illinois are calling on their own candidate for state senate to step down following racist remarks he made at a candidate’s forum last week.
Al Reynolds, who is considered the Tea Party candidate in Illinois’ 52nd District, has been out of the spotlight since saying that African American men preferred dealing drugs to going to college, because it is “easier.”
“I’ve been in the city and the dichotomy of the women and the men in the minorities, there is a difference in the fact that most minority women, either the single parent or coming from a poor neighborhood, are motivated more so than the minority men,” Reynolds said, when asked what he would do to increase diversity at state colleges. “And it’s a pretty good reason. Most of the women who are single parents have to find work to support their family. The minority men find it more lucrative to be able to do drugs or other avenues rather than do education. It’s easier.”

A year ago, my photo editors suggested we start posting a “Photo of the Day” (POD) on the White House website. The idea was to show pictures that viewers do not see anywhere else: behind-the-scenes images of the President and other aspects of life at the White House. (Visit WhiteHouse.gov/Photos for the latest Photo of the Day galleries.)
In the past year, we have selected a new POD at least five days a week (weekend postings depend on the President’s activities). The most popular pictures are ones involving fun moments with the President, or pictures of the family dog, Bo. But, given my extraordinary access, we also try to show the President doing what he spends most of his time doing: running the country.

Tim Profitt, Rand Paul Supporter, Admits To Confronting Woman At Debate

A volunteer with Rand Paul’s Senate campaign has admitted to placing his shoe firmly on the face of a MoveOn.org volunteer outside a Senate debate on Monday night, but insisted that the camera angle of the footage that captured the alteration made the scuffle look worse than it was.
Tim Profitt apologized for the incident in a statement sent to a local AP reporter. But he also criticized the police for not stepping in to calm down the crowd and argued that other supporters had previously warned authorities about the MoveOn activist, Lauren Valle.
Profitt is not, it appears, a random campaign volunteer. As the local blog Barefoot and Progressive noted, the Paul campaign touted his endorsement at the bottom of an ad they had taken out in a Bourbon County paper.
UPDATE: On Tuesday, Lauren Valle spoke for the first time since being thrust into the center of an alarming campaign scuttle bug. Valle said that she recognized the Paul supporters who went after her and felt frightened almost immediately after they claimed they were there to do “crowd control.” Her treatment, she said, was “premeditated.”

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California GOP Senate challenger Carly Fiorina is in the hospital to be treated for an infection associated with her reconstructive surgery after breast cancer.
Deborah Bowker, the campaign’s chief of staff, says in a statement issued Tuesday that Fiorina was admitted to a hospital and is being treated with antibiotics. The campaign will not say when or where she was admitted.
Fiorina, who is 56, fought breast cancer before her run against Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer. The former Hewlett-Packard Co. CEO has maintained a busy campaign schedule in the final weeks of the race.
Bowker says Fiorina has canceled Tuesday campaign events in Riverside and Coachella. She says she expects Fiorina to return to the campaign trail soon.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Democrats will hold the Senate but not the House, although upsets in either chamber remain possible.
In recent days, I’ve heard a lot of speculation about why this is so. Common answers are that the personalities of the candidates matter more in the Senate (this is possibly true: partisan crossover is about 15 percent in Senate races, versus about 10 percent in the House, which might indicate that voters scrutinize the candidates more carefully), that the G.O.P. has a comparatively weaker set of candidates in the Senate (I think this is actually much more debatable than it seems), or some combination thereof.
These explanations are really missing the boat. Sometimes, the reason for something is so obvious that it becomes easy to miss; this may be one of those times. Read more…

White House forms federal committee on Internet, privacy policy
The Obama administration has formed a subcommittee drawn from various parts of the federal government to advise the White House on regulatory and legislative issues for the Web.
The panel, which will focus on the Internet privacy, comes as consumer advocacy groups have complained that Internet users need more protection from social media, advertising and other sites that collect user information.
A blog post last Sunday on the National Science and Technology Council Web site said the subcommittee will include members of several federal agencies, such as the Commerce, Justice, Homeland Security and State departments. Cameron Kerry, general counsel at the Commerce Department, and Christopher Schroeder, assistant attorney general at the Justice Department, will head the group.
Representatives of the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission were also invited. And the White House will have representatives from its Domestic Policy Council, National Economic Council, U.S. Trade Representative office and National Security Staff Cybersecurity Directorate.
“In this digital age, a thriving and dynamic economy requires Internet policies that promote innovation domestically and globally while ensuring strong and sensible protections of individuals’ private information and the ability of governments to meet their obligations to protect public safety,” Kerry and Schroeder wrote in the NSTC blog post.
The announcement comes on the heels of a number of Internet privacy breaches. Google revealed that its Street View cars were scarfing up date from residential Wi-Fi networks. Facebook acknowledged that developers of third-party applications were able to grab user identifications through browsers.
Lawmakers have responded to concerns with two House bills on Internet privacy. Both would require Web sites to collect the most sensitive information about users – their location, ethnic background, financial and medical data – only on a voluntary basis.
The New York Times has reported on the Obama administration’s push for wiretapping of Internet networks by law enforcement.
The idea of the subcommittee is to develop consensus on the direction of U.S. laws and regulations on Internet privacy, but consumer advocacy groups wondered how much emphasis the group would place on protecting consumers. The committee said it would work closely with private companies to make sure their interests are considered in order to “promote innovation and economic expansion.” Online advertisers such as Amazon, Google and the Interactive Advertising Bureau have argued that some collection of user data helps them serve up more relevant ads to users.
“Throughout this process, the Subcommittee will endeavor to strike the appropriate balance between the privacy expectations of consumers and the needs of industry, law enforcement and other public-safety governmental entities, and other Internet stakeholders,” Kerry and Schroeder wrote.
Consumer advocacy groups say the formation of the subcommittee shows a growing recognition by the Obama administration of online privacy concerns, but they fear Internet users won’t have a strong voice in discussions.
“Up until now, the White House and executive branch has been on the sidelines on this issue but a concern is that key U.S. companies, like Google, are core to the Obama administration,” said Jeffrey Chester, executive director of privacy advocacy group the Center for Digital Democracy. “The fear is that this could be an attempt by the White House to control issues for special interests, including the Obama campaign, and not consumers at large.”

Pennsylvania woman charged in deaths of infantsFrom Logan Burruss, CNNOctober 26, 2010 6:19 a.m. EDT
(CNN) — A Pennsylvania woman was charged Monday with criminal homicide after forensic tests showed her to be the mother of four infants whose remains were found in her home in July, according to Berks County, Pennsylvania, District Attorney John Adams.
Authorities also linked her to a fifth set of infant remains found in a nearby landfill.
Michele Kalina, who has been in jail since she was arrested August 9 on charges relating to the discovery of the infants’ remains at her home in Reading, was charged Monday with criminal homicide and five counts of “abuse of corpse” and is being held without bail, Adams said in a statement released by his office.
Kalina’s teenage daughter first contacted authorities on July 29, unsure of what she had discovered in the living room closet, Adams told CNN.
Later that day, officers recovered the suspected remains of three infants from Kalina’s apartment.

Pro-government march planned
Organizers of the Government Doesn’t Suck March said that they plan to attend Stewart’s rally and that they were inspired in part by media reports, including a recent Washington Post poll that revealed negative perceptions of federal workers.
“We hear it day in and day out … federal employees are lazy, and their positions are redundant,” said march organizer Steve Ressler, founder of GovLoop, a social networking Web site for public servants.
“It’s time to turn the tables and remind the world that government employees just happen to be people – people that don’t suck,” Ressler said in announcing the march.

For President Obama, a progressive blitz was not an option

Come on down, everybody in our studio audience, and play the exciting new game that may be about to sweep the nation, or at least the Democratic Party: “What If?”
What if President Obama and the Democratic leadership on Capitol Hill had pushed through an authentic, righteous, no-holds-barred progressive agenda, perhaps with a thick overlay of pitchfork populism? How different might the political landscape look? Would predictions for the party’s prospects on Election Day still range from gloom all the way to doom? Or would triumphant Democrats be preparing to leave the GOP — or what remained of it — dazed and confused?
This question is being asked, in all seriousness, by thoughtful progressives. They argue that the Obama administration’s political mistake wasn’t pushing its liberal program too hard but not pushing it hard enough. And they contend that the White House seriously misread both the public anger and the national interest when it came to dealing with Wall Street’s greedy excesses — punishing miscreant bankers with love taps rather than cudgel and mace.
