WASHINGTON — There may be something rotten at McDonald’s — and it’s not a year-old Happy Meal.
The owner of a franchise in Canton, Ohio enclosed a handbill in employees’ paychecks that threatened lower wages and benefits if Republicans don’t win on Tuesday.
“As the election season is here we wanted you to know which candidates will help our business grow in the future,” reads the letter. “As you know, the better our business does it enables us to invest in our people and our restaurants. If the right people are elected we will be able to continue with raises and benefits at or above our present levels. If others are elected, we will not. As always, who you vote for is completely your personal decision and many factors go into your decision.”
The note ends with a list of candidates McDonald’s believes “will help our business move forward.” It names Republicans John Kasich for governor, Rob Portman for Senate, and Jim Renacci for Congress. With the letter was a biography of Renacci.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama declared Friday that authorities had uncovered a “credible terrorist threat” against the United States following the overseas discovery of U.S.-bound packages containing explosives aboard cargo jets. Obama said both had been addressed to Jewish organizations in the Chicago area.
The disclosures triggered a worldwide alert amid fears that al-Qaida was attempting to carry out fresh terror attacks.
The events “underscore the necessity of remaining vigilant against terrorism,” the president said. The packages both originated in Yemen, but Obama did not explicitly assign blame to al-Qaida, which is active in the Arab nation and long has made clear its goal of attacking the United States.
The events unfolded four days before national elections in which discussion of terrorism has played almost no role.
Obama stepped to the podium in the hours after officials disclosed that authorities in Dubai intercepted an explosive device bound for a Chicago-area Jewish institution. The second package was aboard a plane searched in England, and officials said it contained a printer toner cartridge with wires and powder.
That second package was aboard a plane in East Midlands, north of London.
Obama did not identify any institution that had been targeted.

Céline Dion Was Expecting Triplets, Lost One
Now that her new twins are finally home from the hospital, Céline Dion is currently experiencing a mother’s elated joy.

“A new Public Policy Polling survey in Texas finds Gov. Rick Perry (R) leading challenger Bill White (D) by nine points in the race for re-election, 53% to 44%.
Key finding: “For White it may be a classic case of the right candidate running in the wrong cycle. He has strong favorability numbers at a 46/39 spread while Perry can only break even on his approval rating at 45% giving him good marks and 45% bad ones. A new Mason-Dixon poll in Florida shows that Marco Rubio (R) has built a “commanding and insurmountable” lead in the U.S. Senate contest.
Rubio leads with 45%, followed by Gov. Charlie Crist (I) at 28% and Meek at 21% with just 6% still undecided.
Said pollster Brad Coker: “There is simply no mathematical formula by which Crist or Meek can approach Rubio’s 45 percent support level.”
Screw the polls, Dems should vote Dem. It’s a lesser of the 2 evil nonsense that just doesn’t make sense. You vote for the candidate who will serve your best interest, not let folks use polls and evil to scare you into voting for evil.

While Meeks earned the spot on the ballot, he has not had the cash to run an effective campaign. If he had had money, his job was to eliminate Crist, and drive down his numbers first because folks that will vote for Crist will vote for Meeks over Rubio.
Meeks did not do that! He let the independents and Democrats keep Crist in the race.
Thus, he has no chance and Crist has no chance unless one of them drops out.
Who can pressure Crist to get out? Who can offer him a plum job to get him off the ballot.
The truth is Meeks never earned the majority of Dem votes.
If you do not earn the majority of Dem votes, then the solid voting bloc of blacks/lations will NOT put a win in the column.

“Starting Tuesday night, the results of statewide races will be reported by giving the percentage of ‘expected vote.’ The votes reported at the state level at any given time will be divided by the estimate of the total votes that will be cast in the state to come up with the percentage of expected votes.”
The reason? “‘Percentage of precincts reporting’ is no longer accurate because the increase in early and absentee voting can provide a skewed picture of how much of the vote has actually been counted.”

If the forecast of strong Republican gains in Congress holds true Nov. 2, the battle over net neutrality – the most contentious tech policy issue – isn’t likely to be resolved anytime soon.
Net neutrality – the idea that all traffic on the Internet should travel at the same speed – has been a point of contention for the Federal Communications Commission, which is proposing regulations that would ensure that broadband service providers treat all Web traffic equally. But analysts say the FCC could also find itself in a more hostile political environment as its embattled chairman pushes for rules that Republicans are expected to argue would hurt the telecom and cable companies responsible for a large chunk of American jobs.
Aside from net neutrality, federal regulators and lawmakers are also expected to focus on Internet privacy rules, tax reform and reviews of Comcast’s proposed mega-merger with NBC Universal after the midterm elections.

Five political memes that deserve to die.

EVERY ELECTION produces reams of analysis. Some of it is sharp, some—well, let’s be charitable and say no more. But how can you tell the difference?
One quick way is to look for dumb ideas. Call them memes, urban legends, conventional wisdom. But whatever you call them, they’re ideas that deserve to die. As you plow through this year’s election commentary, here are five to watch out for.
1 Obama has squandered the popularity he built up during the 2008 campaign. This one belongs in the “never deserved to live in the first place” camp. It’s true that Obama has lost popularity faster than his immediate predecessor, George W. Bush. But Obama’s popularity tracked Bush’s almost precisely right through September 10 of their respective first years in office: On that day, Obama’s approval stood at 52 percent compared to 51 percent for Bush. But then, according to Gallup, Bush’s approval rating jumped from 51 percent to 86 percent in the single week after 9/11. That’s the only real difference between Bush’s first two years in office and Obama’s.
And what about presidents whose approval ratings didn’t rocket up after a terrorist attack on American soil? In the summer of their second year in office, Bill Clinton’s approval rating was at 43 percent, Bush Sr.’s stood at 60 percent, the Gipper rated 42 percent, and Jimmy Carter 39 percent.
And Obama? Forty-five percent. So there’s just nothing very unusual here. This is what happens when a president’s honeymoon is over, the economy is in bad shape, and the opposition noise machine is in 24/7 attack mode.
Plus, there’s this question to ask about Obama’s sinking popularity: compared to what? In an AP poll (PDF) over the summer, congressional Democrats scored 37 percent, Republicans scored 30 percent, and Congress as a whole scored a dismal 24 percent approval rating. Obama (who in that poll stood at 49 percent) may have lost some steam in the past couple of years, but by a wide margin he’s still the most popular thing DC has going for it.
