There have always been those who wanted to take the country back.
There were those who, in past years, wanted to take the country back to a time of enslavement and indentured servitude.
But they lost.
There were those who wanted to take us back to a time when children could be made to work in mines and factories, when workers had no legal rights to speak of, when the skies in every major city were heavy with industrial soot that would gather on sidewalks and windowsills like volcanic ash.
But they lost.
There were those who wanted to take us back to a time when women could not vote, or attend any but a few colleges, or get loans in their own names, or start their own businesses.
But they lost.
There were those who wanted to take us back to a time when blacks “had no rights that the white man was bound to respect,” – this being the official opinion of the Supreme Court before those awful days of judicial activism, now decried by the likes of you – and when people of color could legally be kept from voting solely because of race, or holding certain jobs, or living in certain neighborhoods, or run out of other towns altogether when the sun would go down, or be strung up from trees.
But they lost.
And you will lose.
So make a note of it.

This isn’t hubris. It isn’t ideology. It is not wishful thinking.
It is math.

The kind of math that proves how your kind — mostly older white folks beholden to an absurd, inaccurate, nostalgic fantasy of what America used to be like — are dying.
You’re like the bad guy in every horror movie ever made, who gets shot five times, or stabbed ten, or blown up twice, and who will eventually pass — even if it takes four sequels to make it happen — but who in the meantime keeps coming back around, grabbing at our ankles as we walk by, we having been mistakenly convinced that you were finally dead this time.
Fair enough, and have at it. But remember how this movie ends.
Our ankles survive.
You do not.

Even that crazy fucker in Saw is about to be finished off for good. Granted, he’s gonna be popping out in 3-D to scare the kiddies, so he isn’t going quietly. But he’s going, as all bad guys eventually do.
And in the pantheon of American history, conservative old white people have pretty much always been the bad guys, the keepers of the hegemonic and reactionary flame, the folks unwilling to share the category of American with others on equal terms.
Fine, keep it up. It doesn’t matter.
Because you’re on the endangered list.
And unlike, say, the bald eagle or some exotic species of muskrat, you are not worth saving.
In forty years or so, maybe fewer, there won’t be any more white people around who actually remember that Leave it to Beaver, Father Knows Best, Opie-Taylor-Down-at-the-Fishing Hole cornpone bullshit that you hold so near and dear to your heart.
There won’t be any more white folks around who think the 1950s were the good old days, because there won’t be any more white folks around who actually remember them, and so therefore, we’ll be able to teach about them accurately and honestly, without hurting your precious feelings, or those of the so-called “greatest generation” — a bunch whose white contingent was top-heavy with ethical miscreants who helped save the world from fascism only to return home and oppose the ending of it here, by doing nothing to lift a finger on behalf of the civil rights struggle.
It’s OK. Because in about forty years, half the country will be black or brown. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Bottom line, this too shall pass.
So enjoy your tax cuts a while longer.
Go buy whatever you people buy when your taxes get cut: a new car or two, a bigger house, an island. Whatever.
Go back to trading your derivatives, engaging in rampant financial speculation that produces nothing of value, that turns the whole world into your personal casino. Whatever.
Play your hand, and for the love of God play it big. Real big. As in, shoot for the moon big. As in, try to privatize Social Security, and health care, and everything else. Whatever.
At least that way everyone will be able to see what you’re really about.
We’ve been trying to tell them, but nothing beats seeing it with your own eyes, so “Go big or go home,” Bubba.

They have to study you, to pay careful attention, to adjust their body armor accordingly, and to memorize your sleep patterns.
You, on the other hand, need know nothing whatsoever about them. And this, will surely prove politically fatal to you in the end. For it means you will not know their resolve. Will not fear it, as you should.
It means you will take their greatest strength — perseverance — and make of it a weakness, called losing.
But what you forget, or more to the point never knew, is that those who lose know how to lose, which is to say they know how to lose with dignity.
And those who suffer know how to suffer, which is to say they know how to survive: a skill that is in short supply amid the likes of you.
You, who could not survive the thought of minimal health care reform, or financial regulation, or a marginal tax rate equal to that which you paid just 10 years earlier, perhaps are under the illusion that everyone is as weak as you, as soft as you, as akin to petulant children as you are, as unable to cope with the smallest setback, the slightest challenge to the way you think your country should look and feel, and operate.
But they are not.
And they know how to regroup, and plot, and plan, and they are planning even now — we are — your destruction.
And I do not mean by that your physical destruction. We don’t play those games. We’re not into the whole “Second Amendment remedies, militia, armed resistance” bullshit that your side fetishizes, cuz, see, we don’t have to be. We don’t need guns.
We just have to be patient.
And wait for you to pass into that good night, first politically, and then, well…

Rep. Grayson: Dems lost because of ‘appeasement’

House Democrats were swept out of power because party leaders tried to hard to “appease” Republicans on major issues, said a high-profile member Thursday who lost his seat.
Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) said Democratic leaders should have been more aggressive and shut Republicans out of the negotiating process, arguing it would have helped them in Tuesday’s midterm elections.
I think that the Democrats are saddened and demoralized by this policy of appeasement,” he said on MSNBC, noting that Democrats suffered from low turnout.
Even though Grayson — a liberal firebrand — was defeated Tuesday, he continues to have good standing on the left. He countered the Republican narrative of their midterm victories, that voters repudiated President Obama and his policies by booting Democrats from power in the House.

As they assess Tuesday’s disaster, some Obama advisers are singling out the recently departed chief of staff. Richard Wolffe on the clash between Emanuel’s personal ambition and his party loyalty.
As chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rahm Emanuel built a Democratic majority in the House. As President Obama’s chief of staff, he devised White House strategy toward Capitol Hill. So when the Democrats were going down in flames Tuesday night, where was Obama’s chief political architect? Half a continent away, campaigning for himself.
Half a continent away, campaigning for himself in the most pro-Obama place on the planet, largely sheltered from the Republican rubble crashing down on his party all across the country.
And his old colleagues in Washington aren’t too happy about it. Some of them shake their heads in disbelief that Emanuel would bolt at precisely the juncture when the Democrats needed to shape their strategy and message during the homestretch of what everyone knew would be the toughest election cycle in years.
“It was Rahm who always said, ‘We’ve just got to put points on the board,’ and that’s why we have a transactional presidency,” said one former colleague. “The only problem is that Obama is not a transactional politician. It was Rahm’s strategy and then he leaves a month before the election for his own personal political career. It’s extraordinary.”
After a month of running for mayor of Chicago, Emanuel took the time on Tuesday to call some of the defeated candidates, whose political careers he helped launch as part of the Democratic takeover in 2006.
But the fact remains: four years later, his class of ’06 is decimated and Emanuel has left Washington politics altogether.

Heath Shuler Would Challenge Pelosi For House Minority Leader Post

Nancy Pelosi’s demotion from Speaker of the House could end up being a few more steps down if Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) has his way, as reports now suggest that the Blue Dog Democrat will challenge her for the House minority leader position.
“If there’s not a viable alternative [to Pelosi] — like I said all along — I can go recruit moderate Members to run in swing districts,” Shuler said on Thursday. “In that situation, I could do it better than she could, and that’s what it’s going to take. It’s going to take moderate candidates to win back those seats.”
Pelosi has not said whether she will pursue the leadership post.
Shuler announced his intention to challenge Pelosi late last month during a debate with his opponent, Jeff Miller, whom he defeated on Tuesday.
“If there is no viable alternative (to Pelosi), I will be running for speaker of the house,” Shuler said during that exchange. The top House spot in the Democratic party will now be minority leader following the shift of power.

Obama to meet with Boehner, other leaders in two weeks
This is going to be a meeting in which I want us to talk substantively about how we can move the American people’s agenda forward,” Obama said after meeting with his Cabinet. “It’s not just going to be a photo-op. Hopefully it may spill over into dinner.”
The “immediate focus” is the upcoming lame duck congressional session, Obama said, as well as the agenda when the new Congress elected this week takes office in January. When that happens, Boehner and the Republicans will run the U.S. House, while Democrats control the U.S. Senate, though with a smaller majority.
The meeting is set for Nov. 18 because Obama will be traveling in Asia next week.

Sixth District Republican won’t elaborate on promise to cut spending
CNN’s Anderson Cooper had a straightforward question for Rep. Michele Bachmann last night: Now that Republicans have the majority in the U.S. House, what spending cuts will they make to balance the budget? Republicans have talked about dismantling the Department of Energy, the Department of Education and doing away with corporate income tax. While Bachmann refused to name any specific programs she’d cut, she did have one case of “massive overspending”: President Obama’s upcoming trip to India. One problem with that: The cost of the trip she repeatedly cites is massively overestimated.
Bachmann told Cooper that Obama’s south Asian trip will cost taxpayers “$200 million a day” and represents “the kind of over-the-top spending” that’s rampant in Washington.
“No one really knows the cost, because for security reasons they don’t disclose the cost,” Cooper countered. “So this idea that it’s $200 million is simply made up.”
Bachmann replied, “Well these are the numbers that have been coming out in the press.”

Obama’s India trip — not as expensive as you may have heard
No, President Obama’s trip is not going to cost $200 million a day.
That figure — first thrown out by a single Indian media outlet and now viral on conservative talk radio — is wildly, wildly off the mark.
The problem is that the costs for these trips are impossible to determine, for many of the president’s expenses would be incurred whether he was visiting India or Atlanta or simply hanging around the White House. Obama’s India trip starts an Asian swing that includes South Korea, Indonesia and Japan.
The administration isn’t inclined to detail costs, most of which deal with security.
“The numbers reported in this article have no basis in reality,” said White House spokesman Tommy Vietor. “Due to security concerns, we are unable to outline details associated with security procedures and costs, but it’s safe to say these numbers are wildly inflated.”
To be sure, these trips do cost millions of dollars per day.
Whenever a president travels, he or she takes a mini-White House with them, from bulletproof limousines to gaggles of aides. This can come in awfully handy when trouble happens, such as the terrorist attacks on 9/11 when George W. Bush was in Florida. Ronald Reagan was traveling in Asia when the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Russia blew up in 1986.
Foreign trips are expensive but are a staple of presidential duties. India is a rising economy power. It is next to — and has an intense rivalry with — one of the world’s most dangerous countries, Pakistan. It can be a counterweight to threats from China. Any president is going to deal with India.
Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim majority nation. South Korea is the site of a G-20 global economic summit. Japan is hosting the annual Asian economic summit, which Obama’s predecessors also attended. There’s no evidence that Obama’s team is spending any more money than its predecessors, taking inflation into account.
Yes, these gigs will cost money. But $200 million a day? Not even close.
One other thing to keep in mind: The Secret Service is not going to let anything happen to a president overseas if they can help it. They’re going to do — and spend — whatever it takes. That’s just a fact of life.
One last thing: The media organizations accompanying Obama will pay their own expenses.

In 2006, according to the national exit poll, 69% of Latinos voted for Democratic candidates in their congressional district races, while 30% supported Republicans.3 In the 2008 presidential election, Latinos supported Democrat Barack Obama by a margin of more than two-to-one over Republican John McCain — 67% vs. 31% according to a Pew Hispanic Center analysis of the national exit poll.
“CNN’s exit polls show that men and white voters broke for Angle by significant margins. Angle carried white voters by a 53 percent to 41 percent margin and men by a 48 percent to 46 percent margin. Reid made that up among women (53 percent), African Americans (78 percent), Latinos (68 percent) and Asians (79 percent). Even though white voters made up 72 percent of the vote and Reid only carried 41 percent of that block, those large margins among other ethnic groups carried him to victory.”

Republicans around the country are still celebrating their very good day on Tuesday. Who can blame them? Riding a wave of economic discontent, they captured not only a bigger House majority than they’ve had in 60 years but also state legislatures and governorships around the country.
Does this mean the country is now and always will be ‘center-right’? It means nothing of the sort. In fact, Republicans may be having their last big victory dance for decades. Demographic change suggests that they will not be able to sustain an electoral majority for long because they do not appeal to voters of color.
Look at what happened in Nevada. Sharron Angle is an extreme candidate, but she cleaned herself up pretty well for the general election, and commentators say she won a big debate against Harry Reid. Given Reid’s unpopularity, she should have won.
But Angle couldn’t resist demonizing Latinos, running a vicious ad in which she suggested all Latino immigrants are criminals. (See video below.) That prompted Latino voters to turn out in droves for Reid. From the Las Vegas Sun:

As late as the early 1960s, it was not unusual for Republican candidates to get 30 percent of the Black vote, particularly moderate Republicans such as New York City Mayor John V. Lindsay and Connecticut Sen. Lowell Weicker.
A major turning point for the party and its relationship with African-Americans came when Republicans chose Sen. Barry Goldwater, an arch conservative from Arizona, as its presidential candidate in 1964.
Goldwater ran on a states’ right platform, an overt attempt to court Southern segregationists. Only 6 percent of Blacks voted for Goldwater.
By contrast, 94 percent of African-Americans supported incumbent Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson, who was elected in a landslide. “

Latinos turn out to vote in record numbers
California Latinos turned out to vote in record numbers Tuesday, driven largely by the governor’s race where they favored Jerry Brown over Meg Whitman by more than 2 to 1, according to this analysis of exit polls by Cathleen Decker of the Los Angeles Times.
Latinos accounted for 22 percent of the total ballots cast in the state and while they largely turned out to vote for Brown, they then voted for other Democrats as well. This was likely a factor in the 9-percentage point victory of Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Santa Ana, over highly touted Republican challenger Van Tran.
(The Register’s Doug Irving reports that both Sanchez and Tran are withholding declarations of victory and concession until the remaining mail and provisional ballots are counted.)
Latino voters in California are typically far less likely to cast ballots than their Anglo and Asian counterparts. However, were spurred to participate this election in part by Whitman’s controversy over the hiring and firing of an illegal immigrant maid.
Whitman said that while Nicky Diaz Santillan worked for her for nine years, she only learned she was an illegal immigrant when she decided to run for governor – and promptly fired her. That treatment didn’t sit well with many Latinos.
Some analysts say the incident was the coup de grace for Whitman, and it figures prominently in my “8 moments that made Brown a winner, Whitman a loser.”
Latino turnout was also a factor in the nationwide wave of GOP victories not extending to California.
In terms of the Sanchez-Tran race, it was more than Latino voters that cost Tran the election, according to this analysis by GOP consultant Dave Gilliard. He says Tran’s scratch-and-sniff mailer, and Anaheim appearance with Sarah Palin were key to his loss.

George Bush Says He Approved Waterboarding: ‘Damn Right’

That’s what former president George W. Bush told CIA officials when they came to ask him for permission to waterboard alleged 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheik Mohammed, according to a Washington Post report on the 43rd president’s forthcoming book, “Decision Points.”
Mohammed supposedly had knowledge of brewing terrorist plots against the United States, and Bush had little reservation about using the practice of simulated drowning on the detainee to extract them.
“I’d do it again to save lives,” Bush, who refused to call the interrogation technique “torture” during his presidency, said at a forum earlier this year. He repeats this willingness to use the procedure and maintains that it isn’t torture in his book, according to the Post.
President Obama and the current Justice Department have tightened their view on waterboarding, characterizing it as an act of torture that is prohibited by international stricture, and, while the Post reports that there may someday be legal repercussions for those who directly authorized torture, the Obama administration has shown little interest in pursuing action against Bush and others, such as Dick Cheney, who have openly supported and admitted using the interrogation tactic.

In the name of fiscal probity, the incoming Republican leadership in Congress has committed to doing whatever it takes to stop the health care reform act from taking effect. Yet many of the provisions that politicians have been taking aim at are the ones that save money — like those that reduce excessive provider payments and create new institutions to curb cost growth.
If the newly elected representatives and senators are truly concerned about rising health care costs, they should work to deploy the law’s cost-containment measures fully rather than try to repeal them.
Sure, the health care law is not perfect, but it would cut the nation’s long-term fiscal imbalance by a quarter and reduce the projected deficit within Medicare by three-quarters. That may seem fanciful, given how distorted the public discussion has become. But that’s what the projections show, as long as Congress sticks to its guns and the Obama administration does a good job carrying out the provisions of the law.

McConnell’s Top Goal is to Make Obama a 1-Term President

Twenty-four hours after Speaker-to-be Boehner and President Obama talked about the need to work together, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is taking a different tack. In a speech to be delivered at 11:00 am ET in DC, NBC’s Ken Strickland reports, McConnell will defend his statement that defeating President Obama in 2012 is his top priority — a comment that drew criticism from Democrats, especially with unemployment near 10%. “Some have said it was indelicate of me to suggest that our top political priority over the next two years should be to deny President Obama a second term in office,” McConnell is expected to say, according to excerpts of today’s speech. “But the fact is, if our primary legislative goals are to repeal and replace the health spending bill; to end the bailouts; cut spending; and shrink the size and scope of government, the only way to do all these things it is to put someone in the White House who won’t veto any of these things.”
On health care, McConnell will say that Republicans should propose and vote on a “straight repeal, repeatedly.” He’ll also say House Republicans should use their new majority to deny funding implementation of the law. That, of course, would lead to potential gridlock in the Senate. In the national exit poll, 47% said they wanted to keep the health law in place or expand it; 48% of those who voted said they wanted to repeal it. So the midterms weren’t a mandate for anyone’s position on health care. The public is divided — right down the middle.
So where does the JOB creation come into the GOP plans, hmm?

The first excerpts of former President George W. Bush’s interview with NBC New’s Matt Lauer were released on Tuesday night. And what stands among the noteworthy bits about Bush’s political mindset in the moment of existential crises is that, for all that happened, his low point was being called racist by Kanye West.
From the interview, which will air Monday, November 8, 2010 at 8 p.m. ET on “Matt Lauer Reports” in advance of the release of Bush’s book “Decision Points.”
MATT LAUER: About a week after the storm hit NBC aired a telethon asking for help for the victims of Katrina. We had celebrities coming in to ask for money. And I remember it vividly because I hosted it. And at one part of the evening I introduced Kanye West. Were you watching?
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Nope.
MATT LAUER: You remember what he said?
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Yes, I do. He called me a racist.
MATT LAUER: Well, what he said, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people.”
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: That’s — “he’s a racist.” And I didn’t appreciate it then. I don’t appreciate it now. It’s one thing to say, “I don’t appreciate the way he’s handled his business.” It’s another thing to say, “This man’s a racist.” I resent it, it’s not true, and it was one of the most disgusting moments in my Presidency.
MATT LAUER: This from the book. “Five years later I can barely write those words without feeling disgust.” You go on. “I faced a lot of criticism as President. I didn’t like hearing people claim that I lied about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction or cut taxes to benefit the rich. But the suggestion that I was racist because of the response to Katrina represented an all time low.”
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Yeah. I still feel that way as you read those words. I felt ’em when I heard ’em, felt ’em when I wrote ’em and I felt ’em when I’m listening to ’em.
MATT LAUER: You say you told Laura at the time it was the worst moment of your Presidency?
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH: Yes. My record was strong I felt when it came to race relations and giving people a chance. And– it was a disgusting moment.
Kanye West’s comment — which was made, ironically, on NBC during a telethon fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina – quickly became an indelible moment of Bush’s second term. And while it was obviously rare and off-putting for a rap star to insist that the president didn’t care about black people, it’s also somewhat unexpected that that would be Bush’s personal, political nadir

The Negro Motorist Green Book is the subject of today’s “Little-Known Black History Fact.”
The Negro Motorist Green Book was a publication released in 1936 that served as a guide for African-American travelers. Because of the racist conditions that existed from segregation, blacks needed a reference manual to guide them to integrated or black-friendly establishments. That’s when they turned to “The Negro Motorist Green Book: An International Travel Guide” by activist Victor Green and presented by the Esso Standard Oil Company. Originally provided to serve Metropolitan New York, the book received such an alarming response, it was spread throughout the country within one year. The catch phrase was “Now we can travel without embarassment.”
The Green Book often provided information on local “tourist homes,” which were private residences owned by blacks and open to travelers. It was especially helpful to blacks that traveled through “sunset towns” or towns that publicly stated that blacks had to leave the town by sundown or it would be cause for arrest. Also listed were hotels, barbershops, beauty salons, restaurants, garages, liquor stores, ball parks and taverns. It also provided a listing of the white-owned, black-friendly locations for accommodations and food.
The publication was free, with a 10-cent cost of shipping. As interest grew, the Green Book solicited salespersons nationwide to build its ad sales.
Inside the pages of the Green Book were action photos of the various locations, along with historical and background information for the readers’ review. Within the pages of the introduction, the guide states, “There will be a day sometime in the near future when this guide will not have to be published. That is when we as a race will have equal opportunities and privileges in the United States .”
The Green Book printed its last copy in 1964 after the passing of the Civil Rights Act.
