First Lady Michelle Obama surprised a group of U.S. servicemen and women based in Germany on Thursday, jumping in to serve them steaks at a special Veterans Day meal.
“Oh, my God! Where’s my camera,” gasped Lavondee Stallings, a preschool teacher whose husband serves in the military, as Obama entered the banquet room at Ramstein Air Base’s Officers Club.
Stallings was one of some 200 people with whom the First Lady spent time during a refueling stopover on the way home from her tour of Asia with President Barack Obama.
“I am missing Sasha and Malia desperately,” Obama said of her daughters as she spoke to the group gathered for the donated steak dinner, grilled by volunteers from the California-based Cooks of the Valley.
“But it is a thrill to be here with you guys, because we are so grateful to all of you,” she said. “Not just our servicemen and women, but their kids, wives, husbands and parents.”
After serving, Obama went through the room doling out hugs, handshakes and warm thanks to troops and their families.
FLOTUS gets a sense of what it’s like to miss family, and can empathize with the troops. There really is no way to quantify or qualify the longing for loved ones.

US President Barack Obama has saluted the bravery of US troops who defended South Korea during its war with North Korea and condemned the communist north for continuing on a course that he says deepens its isolation from the rest of the world.
Speaking at a US Army garrison in Seoul to mark America’s Veterans Day, which falls on the same day as Remembrance Day in Australia, Mr Obama said North Korea knew the path to prosperity and should take it.
“Because the Korean War ended where it began geographically, some used the phrase ‘Die for a Tie’ to describe the sacrifice of those who fought here,” Mr Obama said.
“But as we look around at this thriving democracy and its grateful, hopeful citizens, one thing is clear: This was no tie. This was a victory.
“It was a victory then, and it is a victory today,” the President said.
Mr Obama said the Korean peninsula provided the world’s clearest contrast between a society that was open and one that is closed, between a dynamic, growing nation like South Korea and a North Korea “that would rather starve its people”.
“It’s a contrast so stark you can see it from space, as the brilliant lights of Seoul give way to utter darkness in the north,” he said, adding that it is a direct result of the path chosen by the reclusive, communist north.
Mr Obama said the US “will never waver” in its commitment to South Korea’s security and that North Korea’s continued pursuit of nuclear weapons will only lead to more isolation and less security.
He urged Pyongyang to take another path, a road that he said would offer its people growing opportunity instead of crushing poverty.
Mr Obama was speaking inside a packed gymnasium, addressing a uniformed audience of service members from different branches of the US military.
The US keeps a presence of more than 28,000 troops in South Korea.
