The Isley Brothers (pronounced /ˈaɪzliː/; EYES-lee) are a successful and long-running American group consisting of different line-ups of six brothers, and a brother-in-law, Chris Jasper. The founding members were O’Kelly Isley, Jr., Rudolph Isley, Ronald Isley and Vernon Isley.

Starting their careers in the gospel performing circuit in the early 1950s, they eventually crossed over to secular music first finding modest success in doo-wop until the release of their first million-selling hit, “Shout“, in 1959. After several flops resulted in them being dropped from their record label, they found success again with sixties hits such as “Twist & Shout“, later covered successfully by The Beatles and the Motown hit, “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)” in 1962 and 1966 respectively. The group didn’t find success again until the end of the decade when their 1969 single, “It’s Your Thing“, (with Ernie Isley on bass guitar) was released. The song brought them success in the then-fledgling funk genre.

I am so sick of folks talking about the GOP snubbed O and didn’t go to the “SlurpeeSummitt’

Darn near every write of alludes to this being about POTUS being a wuss and the GOP being ‘big dogs’ and Reid saying that the Dems never ever failed to meet with Bush.

Well, you know what I think? I think the GOP is running scared. They are scared to meet with POTUS cause they are experience PTSD everytime they realize it will likely be another Baltimore massacre.

The GOP are snubbing Obama from their leadership meeting because they don’t want to look like drooling fools again. The GOP are running scared because Obama but a verbal foot up their asses last year on national TV. I remember that meeting – Fox just stop airing it after a half hour. You may not like Obama’s politics, but like Clinton – he’s several times smarter than most of the ass hats on the other side. As the Daily Show said, trying to out-debate Obama is like fighting Aquaman in the water

Senate approves long-delayed $1.15 billion black farmer settlement

    http://thehill.com/blogs/on-the-money/budget/130193-senate-approves-long-delayed-115-billion-settlement-for-black-farmers

The Senate on Friday afternoon approved $1.15 billion to fund a long-awaited legal settlement between the Department of Agriculture and African-American farmers who claimed government discrimination.

The upper chamber also approved $3.4 billion to settle complaints that the Department of the Interior mismanaged Native American money accounts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) touted one of the first legislative accomplishments of the lame-duck session.

“Black farmers and Native American trust account holders have had to wait a long time for justice, but now it will finally be served,” Reid said in a statement. “I am heartened that Democrats and Republicans were able to come together to deliver the settlement that these men and women deserve for the discrimination and mismanagement they faced in the past.

“This issue has been of great importance to me, and I am pleased these long-suffering Americans can now receive the closure that they deserve,” Reid added.

“The most far-reaching impact of Republican Party’s historic landslide in the 2010 election will be on redistricting.

As a result of its gains at the state level, Republicans now control the governorship and state legislatures in 15 states — giving them near complete control of redrawing district lines before the next election. And the population growth in (primarily) GOP-friendly states means that many GOP strongholds, like South Carolina and Texas, will be gaining seats in the reapportionment.

But because of the significant Republican gains in the House, the GOP is facing the daunting challenge of redrawing lines to protect its sizable House majority in states while also trying to protect incumbents who would like to run in safer districts.

It puts GOP map-drawers in a catch-22 situation, especially in electoral battlegrounds like Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Michigan. Republicans could draw the districts to maximize their number of pickup opportunities, but that would cause other members to run in less-friendly districts than they’re accustomed to. Or they could focus on protecting their own members, but that will come at the cost of expanding opportunities to maximize Republican gains for the next decade.

Because Republicans control the redistricting process in so many states, there will be a strong temptation to overreach to create what, based on the 2010 election results, appear to be Republican-friendly districts — a temptation the GOP has succumbed to in the past and that later backfired.

National Republicans are well aware of that temptation – and sound like they prefer the more conservative approach of protecting their own over expanding the map.”

“Congress has given the unemployed up to 73 weeks of benefits (on top of the 26 weeks provided by states) to combat the worst recession since the Great Depression. But even though the unemployment rate hovers near 10 percent, Congress is on the verge of taking the benefits away — something it has never done before in such dire economic times.

“Not when we’ve had high unemployment,” Edwards told HuffPost in an interview in her office after the speech.

Lawmakers have routinely given the unemployed extra weeks of benefits in every recession going back to the 1950s, and the benefits have never been dropped with an unemployment rate above 7.2 percent. Extra weeks of unemployment benefits have never been as controversial as they are today. Many lawmakers, particularly Republicans, have said the benefits discourage people from looking for work.

“We’ve always just done it. It’s never been partisan. We’ve done it under Republican presidents, Democratic presidents, Republican Congress, Democratic Congress. And the timing just couldn’t be worse — couldn’t be worse. And so we all get to go home, we have our paychecks, we buy our turkeys. It’s shameful,” Edwards said.

The bill defeated Thursday would have pushed back the eligibility deadline for extended unemployment insurance until Feb. 28. Currently, that deadline is Nov. 30 “

“A campaign finance system that encourages both parties to recruit wealthy candidates who can fund their own races has led to a Congress that no longer accurately represents the American people, a Democratic congresswoman said after Thursday’s House vote to cut off long-term unemployment insurance benefits. Such a vote could never take place if members understood what it means to struggle to find work, she said.

“Increasingly, both sides, Republicans and Democrats, are spending much more of their time recruiting people who are just wealthy. And then, when you think of the kinds of decisions that we have to make — decisions about unemployment, about food stamps, about, you know, basic human needs, about jobs — it raises a question of whether it’s a representative body,” Rep. Donna Edwards (D-Md.) told HuffPost.

    ****************************

“It is genuinely insane that Senate Republicans would ignore U.S. national security interests and kill the pending arms control treaty with Russia, New START.

    But imagine how Russia feels.

Russians are mystified. They can’t quite believe that the U.S. Senate might fail to ratify the nuclear arms treaty, and they see no good from such an outcome.

The list of possible harmful effects they cite encompasses a minefield of global concerns: no more cooperation on Iran, a setback for progressive tendencies in Russia, new hurdles for Russian membership in the World Trade Organization, a terrible example for nuclear countries such as China and India, dim prospects for better NATO relations. And to top it off, the United States and its president would look ridiculous.

Sergei M. Rogov, director of the Institute for U.S. and Canadian Studies, told the Post he simply didn’t believe Republicans would go through with this, unambiguous threats notwithstanding. “In arms control, Russian and American cooperation is crucial,” Rogov said. “I really don’t think Republicans want to kill arms control.”

The problem, I suspect, is that much of the world assumes Republican officials in the United States place the country’s well being above all else. International observers, in other words, believe elected American politicians want to do things that would benefit America. It’s a simple matter of self-interest, which tends to motivate practically everyone in international affairs.

In this case, we’re talking about a treaty that would keep tabs on Russia’s long-range nuclear bases, bolster American credibility around the globe, weaken Iran and North Korea, improve Russian cooperation in Afghanistan, and diminish the political strength of hard-liners in Moscow. For Americans who want to help America, it’s a no-brainer.

But Obama Derangement Syndrome doesn’t just lead right-wing activists to believe ridiculous things, it’s also a sickness that causes powerful Republican officials to put partisanship over patriotism.”

More news to affirm that GOP folks are not the brightest bulb in ANY box!
    *******************************************************

“House Republicans have not yet decided who’ll chair the House Energy and Commerce Committee, but we’re down to three finalists. The competition tells us quite a bit about the state of the GOP caucus.

A leading contender is currently the committee’s ranking member, Texas’ Joe Barton, best known for apologizing to BP for its oil spill and being Congress’ most pro-pollution lawmaker. He’ll fight for the gavel with Illinois’ John Shimkus, who’s made a name for himself by refuting science with his understanding of the Bible.

The third competitor is Michigan’s Fred Upton, a conservative Republican, but a relative moderate by 2010 standards. He’s facing far-right attacks this week over, of all things, light bulbs.

Hoping to counter attacks from his right, Rep. Fred Upton is promising to reexamine a controversial ban on incandescent light bulbs if he becomes chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

The Michigan Republican told POLITICO on Thursday that he’s not afraid to go back after an issue he once supported but that has come under withering assault on the conservative airwaves, including on Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck’s talk shows.

“If I become chairman, we’ll be reexamining the light bulb issue, no problem,” Upton said.

Upton’s bid to be the next Energy and Commerce Committee leader has been rocked by allegations that he’s too moderate for the post.

Beck called him “all socialist” for cosponsoring legislation phasing out incandescent light bulbs that made it into a 2007 energy law signed by President George W. Bush. An unsigned 22-page document highlighting Upton’s voting record on a range of fiscal, social and policy has also been circulating around Capitol Hill this month.

Just so we’re clear, one of the central issues for Republicans in the 21st century, when picking a lawmaker to chair a committee dealing with energy, is protection for a 19th-century-style light bulb.”

O just listen to this GOP talking point..I wonder it this talking point warmed the hearts of all those angry UNemployed white males..who voted for NO HANDOUTS?!!

“Rep. John Kline (R) is poised to become chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, giving him quite a bit of power over issues of great concern to the public. He’ll be succeeding Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), who’s proven himself to be an exceptional champion of working families.

    Kline prefers a different approach.

Yesterday, the conservative Republican talked with Minnesota Public Radio about his opposition to extended unemployment benefits, pointing to the budget deficit. Specifically, he was asked, “[W]hat do you tell those folks hanging on by a thread who really need those benefits?” Kline responded:

“Well, they, heh, the best thing to do for them is to get the economy back on track and get businesses hiring so that they have a job that they can go to. We simply don’t have the money to keep extending unemployment benefits indefinitely. We just don’t have the money.”

He added, “We can’t fund everything.”

In general, that’s true; we can’t “fund everything.” It’s up to policymakers in a position of power to exercise good judgment and choose between competing priorities.

On the one hand, we have hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts that will benefit millionaires and billionaires, and all of which would be added to the deficit. Kline supports the cuts enthusiastically. America, apparently, “has the money.”

On the other hand, we have 2.5 million Americans, all of whom are struggling badly, poised to lose jobless benefits. These benefits tend to have an impressive stimulative effect — when the unemployed get a check, they spend it — which improves the larger economy. Kline opposes the benefits, and voted against them yesterday. America, apparently, “doesn’t have the money.”

  18. Joe Scarborough Suspended From MSNBC Over Political Donations

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/11/19/joe-scarborough-suspended_n_786105.html

MSNBC has suspended “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough for the same violation that took Keith Olbermann off the air earlier this month.

In a statement, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said he has suspended Scarborough for making political donations to candidates in Florida without seeking prior approval:

This morning Joe Scarborough informed me that he made eight contributions of $500 each to local candidates in Florida between 2004-08. In my conversation with Joe two weeks ago, he did not recall these contributions. Since he did not seek or receive prior approval for these contributions, Joe understands that I will be suspending him for violating our policy. He will be immediately suspended for two days without pay and will return to the air on Wednesday, November 24th. As Joe recognizes, it is critical that we enforce our standards and policies.
Under NBC News policy, employees must seek prior approval if making political donations.

Scarborough apologized in a public statement, saying, “I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter.” His full statement appears below.

It was recently brought to my attention that I made political contributions over the past several years that are not consistent with MSNBC’s guidelines. These contributions were to close personal friends and family members and were limited to local races.
Despite the fact that these races were local and not relevant to my work at MSNBC, I have been told they violated MSNBC guidelines.

I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter. I apologize to MSNBC and to anyone who has been negatively affected by my actions.

The testimony came during the trial of officer Greg McRae and Lt. Senate expected to pass black farmers settlementBy the CNN Wire StaffNovember 19, 2010 11:52 a.m. EST
Washington (CNN) — The U.S. Senate is expected to approve $1.15 billion Friday to fund a settlement initally reached between the Agriculture Department and minority farmers more than a decade ago, according to Senate sources.

The 1997 Pigford v. Glickman case against the U.S. Agriculture Department was settled out of court 11 years ago. Under a federal judge’s terms dating to 1999, qualified farmers could receive $50,000 each to settle claims of racial bias.

“This is much long overdue justice for black farmers,” said John Boyd, founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association.

The Senate is also expected to clear — in the same piece of legislation — $3.4 billion to fund a separate settlement reached with the Department of Interior for mishandling of a trust fund managed for Native Americans.

In July, the House approved a war supplemental bill that included money to pay for the settlements. At the time, however, the Senate failed to approve the measure.

Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, dropped an objection to the package this week after Senate leaders agreed not to finance it through additional deficit spending.

Prominent members of both parties have voiced support for paying out the settlements.

If the Senate measure passes, it will have to be approved by the lame duck House before moving to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law.

LISBON, Portugal — LISBON, Portugal — President Barack Obama arrived in the Portuguese capital Friday for two days of meetings that will put his Afghanistan war strategy in the spotlight.

Obama met with Portugal’s president and prime minister before attending the opening session of the NATO summit.

NATO countries are expected to back plans to pull most of the 150,000 foreign troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

NATO leaders will announce the exit strategy from a war widely seen as going badly for the United States and its allies, but approve a new 10-year vision statement underlining the need for the alliance to be ready for similar missions in the future.

Uopon his arrival, Obama on praised Portugal’s government for committing itself to “a very vigorous package of economic steps” as it dealt with challenges created by the global economic crisis.

“We are going to be working with all of Europe as well as Portugal in support of these efforts,” Obama said after meeting Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates.

Fundraising is just beginning for the endowment, a partnership between the UH Foundation and the East-West Center.

University officials say the fund will support an endowed chair in the anthropology department and scholarships for students focused on that field and other social sciences.

The fund is in the name of Ann Dunham Soetoro, the moniker Obama’s mother adopted after marrying her second husband, Lolo Soetoro. She also used the name during years of anthropology studies.

Facebook and MySpace joint announcement: MySpace welcomes Facebook users

Update: No exciting merger, folks. MySpace will be introducing a feature that allows its remaining users to log on to the site with their Facebook IDs, hereby finally ceding the social networking crown to the reigning champ.

The new project, dubbed “Mashup with Facebook,” could help the newly redesigned MySpace by introducing its entertainment content to the huge user-base of Facebook. Mashable reports that MySpace will also be introducing “like” buttons to its content, “meaning MySpace content like music and videos will start getting shared back to Facebook.”

    Update II:

YouRockRadio writes, “Being in the music industry, I believed that MySpace missed the boat on their true calling years ago. Instead of pandering to silly games and nonsensical karaoke contests, they should have concentrated on what they really were… The largest collection of independent music artists in the world! What a wasted opportunity.”

Al Hilwa, a Seattle tech analyst, writes, “The question is whether money changed hands to enable this and whether this is a pre-cursor for acquisition? I am guessing that News Corp has not achieved its goals with MySpace and may be losing patience at this stage. Of course the scary thing is all the accumulation of data about individuals. What if my insurance companies, my banks, my doctors and my retailers decided to pool what they know about me together? What is left of my privacy to protect?”

On Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern, the two great giants of social media networks will come together for a surprise announcement. Of course, it’s really only one great giant now, and the announcement will likely knell the final death toll for MySpace.

Just last week, MySpace’s CEO said his site is no longer a social network. It recently underwent a massive redesign, to become a “social entertainment destination.”

  25. Hey guys,

What’s up with Sarah Palin going after Michelle & Malia? I don’t wanna get upset. I’m trying to be calm. Going after Malia? A child? Oh, she need to be snatched but good.

It’s a stunt to get her RABID supporters to further show their hate and disdain for the BLACK family in the White House. The same family that won the presidency in 2008, the man and family that HANDILY BEAT her and John McCain to a pulp, and denied them the opportunity to come to Washington.

Hate & Jealousy, NOT an attractive look for you Sarah, wanna be POTUS in 2012 Palin.

      • Palin is nothing more than filthy white trash. She knows she is trash and all she has is that rabid white trash base of supporters who are just like her. Decent people despise her & look down on her hillbilly ignorance. Michelle wouldn’t give this bish the time of day.

The Obama family is EVERYTHING the Palin family is NOT, everything that white America set as a standard for the idea American family.

Good work ethics, 2 parent household, values, moral, ethics, good education. The Palin children are scattered all over the place, they lie, vandalize, name-call, are unwed and have babies, spit in the face of education, druggies.. the son…. Sarah’s a quitter & a grifter. Shall I go on?

The only thing the Obamas aren’t is WHITE, and so Palin has nothing else in her bag of tricks but to attack. That’s what low education, no morals, ethics, and white entitlement will get you folks.

      • ALL OF THIS

I want this bitch to run in 2012. We’ll circulate every Youtube, twitter, facebook, word salad debacle she’s done and continues to do. RUN, SARAH, RUN. Your 5 million viewers of that fake ass reality show will vote for you, but don’t bank on any SANE Americans(IF THERE ARE ANY ALIVE) to fall for your game.

      • Michelle Obama was speaking about being proud of the political process in this country. We all know the process wasn’t pretty for black people. We were abused as citizens of this country, we couldn’t vote, & some were beaten and or killed for attempting to vote. Michelle said nothing wrong. America has an ugly stain for the mistreatment of African American people. It is what it is. America has been mean to African Americans. So what, pray tell, was wrong with Michelle’s words? We know what happen. It cannot be hidden under a rug and ignored.

Sen. Coburn Supports Increasing Taxes ‘If We Cut Spending’
Last week, the co-chairs of President Obama’s deficit reduction commission released a report outlining their recommendations to reduce the budget deficit. Since then, a raucous debate has erupted over the proper measures that should be taken to rein in the U.S. debt.

Yesterday morning, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) appeared on CSPAN’s Washington Journal to discuss his thoughts on the commission and the proper steps to reduce the deficit in general. At one point, the senator explained that even though he “has said we don’t need increased taxes, I’ll take increased taxes if we cut spending. We have to look down the road and solve problems for everybody, no matter what their label is”:

HOST: The debt commission, the deficit commission rather. What is your take on their recommendations, and how realistic is it?

COBURN: Well, let’s set the stage for it. We have to do something. […] Even though I’ve said we don’t need increased taxes, I’ll take increased taxes if we cut spending. We have to look down the road and solve the problems for everybody, no matter what their label is.

Obama’s opportunity to be the decider
    By Eugene Robinson

We don’t define periods in American history by who held the majority in Congress. It was the Reagan Era, not the Tip O’Neill Era – just as we’re now living in the Obama Era, no matter what John Boehner or Mitch McConnell might hope.

President Obama is being inundated with contradictory advice on what to do next, now that his party is losing its majority in the House and will have weaker control of the Senate. Most of the punditocracy’s counsel centers on how Obama should greet the strengthened and emboldened Republican opposition.

With a defiant, Churchillian vow to fight in the committees, on the beaches, etc., but “never surrender” to the encroaching hordes? With a broad smile and an invitation to join hands in bipartisan compromise, and perhaps a singalong around the campfire? With a somewhat less genuine smile and a series of maneuvers, in concert with the Democratic leaders in Congress, that forces congressional Republicans to cast politically difficult votes?
