The Isley Brothers (pronounced /ˈaɪzliː/; EYES-lee) are a successful and long-running American group consisting of different line-ups of six brothers, and a brother-in-law, Chris Jasper. The founding members were O’Kelly Isley, Jr., Rudolph Isley, Ronald Isley and Vernon Isley.
Starting their careers in the gospel performing circuit in the early 1950s, they eventually crossed over to secular music first finding modest success in doo-wop until the release of their first million-selling hit, “Shout“, in 1959. After several flops resulted in them being dropped from their record label, they found success again with sixties hits such as “Twist & Shout“, later covered successfully by The Beatles and the Motown hit, “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)” in 1962 and 1966 respectively. The group didn’t find success again until the end of the decade when their 1969 single, “It’s Your Thing“, (with Ernie Isley on bass guitar) was released. The song brought them success in the then-fledgling funk genre.

Senate approves long-delayed $1.15 billion black farmer settlement

The Senate on Friday afternoon approved $1.15 billion to fund a long-awaited legal settlement between the Department of Agriculture and African-American farmers who claimed government discrimination.
The upper chamber also approved $3.4 billion to settle complaints that the Department of the Interior mismanaged Native American money accounts.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) touted one of the first legislative accomplishments of the lame-duck session.
“Black farmers and Native American trust account holders have had to wait a long time for justice, but now it will finally be served,” Reid said in a statement. “I am heartened that Democrats and Republicans were able to come together to deliver the settlement that these men and women deserve for the discrimination and mismanagement they faced in the past.
“This issue has been of great importance to me, and I am pleased these long-suffering Americans can now receive the closure that they deserve,” Reid added.

As a result of its gains at the state level, Republicans now control the governorship and state legislatures in 15 states — giving them near complete control of redrawing district lines before the next election. Kline opposes the benefits, and voted against them yesterday. America, apparently, “doesn’t have the money.”

MSNBC has suspended “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough for the same violation that took Keith Olbermann off the air earlier this month.
In a statement, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said he has suspended Scarborough for making political donations to candidates in Florida without seeking prior approval:
This morning Joe Scarborough informed me that he made eight contributions of $500 each to local candidates in Florida between 2004-08. In my conversation with Joe two weeks ago, he did not recall these contributions. Since he did not seek or receive prior approval for these contributions, Joe understands that I will be suspending him for violating our policy. He will be immediately suspended for two days without pay and will return to the air on Wednesday, November 24th. As Joe recognizes, it is critical that we enforce our standards and policies.
Under NBC News policy, employees must seek prior approval if making political donations.
Scarborough apologized in a public statement, saying, “I recognize that I have a responsibility to honor the guidelines and conditions of my employment, and I regret that I failed to do so in this matter.” His full statement appears below.
It was recently brought to my attention that I made political contributions over the past several years that are not consistent with MSNBC’s guidelines. These contributions were to close personal friends and family members and were limited to local races.

A New Orleans police officer was laughing after he burned the body of a man who had been gunned down by police in Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath, a fellow officer testified Thursday.
The testimony came during the trial of officer Greg McRae and Lt. Dwayne Scheuermann, who are charged with burning the body of 31-year-old Henry Glover in a car after he was shot and killed by a different officer outside a strip mall on Sept. 2, 2005. Three other current and former officers also are charged in Glover’s death.

Washington (CNN) — The U.S. Senate is expected to approve $1.15 billion Friday to fund a settlement initally reached between the Agriculture Department and minority farmers more than a decade ago, according to Senate sources.
The 1997 Pigford v. Glickman case against the U.S. Agriculture Department was settled out of court 11 years ago. Under a federal judge’s terms dating to 1999, qualified farmers could receive $50,000 each to settle claims of racial bias.
“This is much long overdue justice for black farmers,” said John Boyd, founder and president of the National Black Farmers Association.
The Senate is also expected to clear — in the same piece of legislation — $3.4 billion to fund a separate settlement reached with the Department of Interior for mishandling of a trust fund managed for Native Americans.
In July, the House approved a war supplemental bill that included money to pay for the settlements. At the time, however, the Senate failed to approve the measure.
Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Oklahoma, dropped an objection to the package this week after Senate leaders agreed not to finance it through additional deficit spending.
Prominent members of both parties have voiced support for paying out the settlements.
If the Senate measure passes, it will have to be approved by the lame duck House before moving to President Obama’s desk to be signed into law.

LISBON, Portugal — LISBON, Portugal — President Barack Obama arrived in the Portuguese capital Friday for two days of meetings that will put his Afghanistan war strategy in the spotlight.
Obama met with Portugal’s president and prime minister before attending the opening session of the NATO summit.
NATO countries are expected to back plans to pull most of the 150,000 foreign troops out of Afghanistan by the end of 2014.
NATO leaders will announce the exit strategy from a war widely seen as going badly for the United States and its allies, but approve a new 10-year vision statement underlining the need for the alliance to be ready for similar missions in the future.
Uopon his arrival, Obama on praised Portugal’s government for committing itself to “a very vigorous package of economic steps” as it dealt with challenges created by the global economic crisis.
“We are going to be working with all of Europe as well as Portugal in support of these efforts,” Obama said after meeting Portuguese Prime Minister Jose Socrates.

Endowment fund will honor Obama’s mom

HONOLULU — The University of Hawaii Foundation is forming an endowment fund that will honor the late Stanley Ann Dunham, President Barack Obama’s mother.
Fundraising is just beginning for the endowment, a partnership between the UH Foundation and the East-West Center.
University officials say the fund will support an endowed chair in the anthropology department and scholarships for students focused on that field and other social sciences.
The fund is in the name of Ann Dunham Soetoro, the moniker Obama’s mother adopted after marrying her second husband, Lolo Soetoro. She also used the name during years of anthropology studies.
She received a bachelor’s, a master’s and a doctorate degree from UH.
Way to go, Hawaii!

Facebook and MySpace joint announcement: MySpace welcomes Facebook users

Update: No exciting merger, folks. MySpace will be introducing a feature that allows its remaining users to log on to the site with their Facebook IDs, hereby finally ceding the social networking crown to the reigning champ.
The new project, dubbed “Mashup with Facebook,” could help the newly redesigned MySpace by introducing its entertainment content to the huge user-base of Facebook. Mashable reports that MySpace will also be introducing “like” buttons to its content, “meaning MySpace content like music and videos will start getting shared back to Facebook.”

YouRockRadio writes, “Being in the music industry, I believed that MySpace missed the boat on their true calling years ago. Instead of pandering to silly games and nonsensical karaoke contests, they should have concentrated on what they really were… The largest collection of independent music artists in the world! Sen. Coburn Supports Increasing Taxes ‘If We Cut Spending’
Last week, the co-chairs of President Obama’s deficit reduction commission released a report outlining their recommendations to reduce the budget deficit. Since then, a raucous debate has erupted over the proper measures that should be taken to rein in the U.S. debt.
Yesterday morning, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) appeared on CSPAN’s Washington Journal to discuss his thoughts on the commission and the proper steps to reduce the deficit in general. At one point, the senator explained that even though he “has said we don’t need increased taxes, I’ll take increased taxes if we cut spending. We have to look down the road and solve problems for everybody, no matter what their label is”:
HOST: The debt commission, the deficit commission rather. What is your take on their recommendations, and how realistic is it?

We don’t define periods in American history by who held the majority in Congress. It was the Reagan Era, not the Tip O’Neill Era – just as we’re now living in the Obama Era, no matter what John Boehner or Mitch McConnell might hope.
President Obama is being inundated with contradictory advice on what to do next, now that his party is losing its majority in the House and will have weaker control of the Senate. Most of the punditocracy’s counsel centers on how Obama should greet the strengthened and emboldened Republican opposition.
With a defiant, Churchillian vow to fight in the committees, on the beaches, etc., but “never surrender” to the encroaching hordes? With a broad smile and an invitation to join hands in bipartisan compromise, and perhaps a singalong around the campfire? With a somewhat less genuine smile and a series of maneuvers, in concert with the Democratic leaders in Congress, that forces congressional Republicans to cast politically difficult votes?
