The pool reports that Obama called President Hamid Karzai, who is in Kabul, after canceling a visit because of bad weather. They spoke for 15 minutes.
The main purpose of Obama’s trip is to thank troops; he awarded five Purple Hearts. Obama was expected to be on the ground for three hours. He visited troops at a hospital for 30 minutes and met with the remaining members of a platoon that lost six people this week.
“We started planning this over a month ago,” Ben Rhodes, a national security aide, told reporters. “And the reason was to go during the holiday season. The president wanted to find a time in between Thanksgiving and Christmas when he could go out to spend some times with the troops, in particular, and our civilians in Afghanistan. Basically to wish them a happy holidays. It’s a particularly tough time of year.”
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs told the pool that Obama also got a briefing from special forces while he was there.
