…….As Republican pollster Bill McInturff, who conducts the NBC/WSJ poll with Democratic pollster Peter D. Hart, said after the poll, “It’s a reminder again … for a guy who took a shellacking, he’s got a pretty strong core pulse.” He cited Obama’s strong support among a core constituency of younger women, blacks, Latinos, young voters, voters in the West, and under-30 urban moderates. “This is a president that retains political standing,” he added.

Obama And Republicans Agree On Tax Cut Extension

President Barack Obama lost a game of chicken over tax cut extensions, and had to compromise when Republicans called his bluff.
Obama and the Democrats wanted to extend tax cuts only for middle income earners, while the GOP in Congress were willing to let the cuts expire at the end of the year if those for the wealthy did.
Monday night, Obama announced agreement with Republicans to extend tax cuts for all Americans, renew jobless benefits and grant a one-year reduction in Social Security taxes for millions.
The emerging agreement also includes tax breaks for businesses that the president said would contribute to the economy’s recovery from the worst recession in eight decades.
Obama said there were elements of the deal he personally opposed, including an extension of expiring income tax cuts at upper income levels and a more generous deal on estates. But he said he decided that an agreement with Republicans was more important that a stalemate that would have resulted in higher income taxes at all income levels on Jan. 1.
“Make no mistake, allowing taxes to go up on all Americans would have raised taxes by $3,000 for a typical American family and that could cost our economy well over a million jobs,” he said at the White House.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-NV, reacted curtly to the president’s announcement.
“Now that the president has outlined his proposal, Senator Reid plans on discussing it with his caucus tomorrow,” his spokesman, Jim Manley, said in a written statement.
One top Republican, Rep. Dave Camp of Michigan, was more positive. “This framework will allow us to extend all current tax rates and give economic recovery and job creation a chance,” he said.
Democrats have repeatedly raised objections to including the upper-income in any plan to extend tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003 when George W. Bush was president. The Democratic-controlled House recently passed legislation to let the cuts lapse on incomes over $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples. On Saturday, Republicans blocked an attempt by Senate Democrats to do the same.

Elizabeth Edwards cancer spreads; she posts Facebook good-bye message

Elizabeth Edwards’ loved ones were rushing to her bedside Monday after her cancer took a sharp turn for the worse and doctors said further treatment was useless.
The wronged wife of the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee posted what read like a goodbye on Facebook:
“The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. We know that,” she wrote.
have been sustained throughout my life by three saving graces my family, my friends, and a faith in the power of resilience and hope,” Edwards said.
“These graces have carried me through difficult times and they have brought more joy to the good times than I ever could have imagined.”
The Edwards family in Chapel Hill, N.C., released a statement saying that doctors told her any further treatment would be “unproductive.”
“She is resting at home with family and friends,” the statement said.
ABC News reported the former senator was also by his estranged wife’s side.

In my exclusive interview with General David Petraeus he was encouraged by the progress made since President Obama’s surge of forces into Afghanistan, but is he confident that the Afghan army can take the lead from U.S. forces by NATO’s 2014 deadline?
“I think-no commander ever is going to come out and say, ‘I’m confident that we can do this.’ I think that you say that you assess that this is– you believe this is, you know, a reasonable prospect and knowing how important it is– that we have to do everything we can to increase the chances of that prospect,” the top commander in Afghanistan told me. “But again, I don’t think there are any sure things in this kind of endeavor. And I wouldn’t be honest with you and with the viewers if I didn’t convey that.”
After nine years of war fewer Afghans support a U.S. presence in the country and fewer believe that the United States makes their country any safer, according to a new ABC News/ Washington Post poll – something that the U.S. “clearly” needs to continue to work on, Petraeus said.
“Well, we clearly have to continue to provide the message to the Afghan people about why we’re here, and what it is that we want to do, not just for our own national objectives and coalition objectives, but also for the people of this country, and for the government of Afghanistan, to enable them, indeed, to secure and to govern themselves,” the top commander in Afghanistan said in an exclusive interview.

Oprah has picked two classics by Charles Dickens as her next book club reads.
Oprah, who has the media mojo to boost book sales for any author, will recommend Dickens’ “Great Expectations” and “A Tale of Two Cities” on her show Monday, the same day she has her long-anticipated reconciliation with Jonathan Franzen.
Nine years ago Franzen trashed the talk show queen even after she selected his novel, “The Corrections,” for her book club. But the two are now expected to kiss and make up.
Oprah has raved about Franzen’s latest, “Freedom,” and Franzen, is expected to fully endorse Oprah’s latest picks.

President speaks on Jobs, Economy, Tax-Cuts
Today
President Obama continues his “White House to Main Street” tour today with a trip to Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He visited Forsyth Technical Community College to tour biotech classrooms and made remarks on the economy, where he called for a deal on extending jobless benefits and tax cuts.
The President’s visit to Winston-Salem comes as the Administration and lawmakers are working on a compromise to extend Bush-era tax cuts for all income brackets and expiring jobless benefits. His remarks also focused on the upper-income tax-cut extensions.
Today marks the first public statements by the President on the most recent employment figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) last week. According to the report, the nation’s unemployment went up in November to 9.8 percent.
Pres. Obama’s latest call for increased job opportunities shadows BLS Commissioner Keith Hill’s visit to Capitol Hill last Friday. Hill told committee members that up to 125,000 jobs need to be added to the economy each month before the unemployment rate will be reduced.
The visit is also Obama’s first to Winston-Salem since he was elected president in 2008. His visit is considered by many to reflect North Carolina’s political importance in the upcoming 2012 Presidential election. The state remains a politically important area for the Democrats and Pres. Obama. He narrowly won North Carolina in 2008.

The trustee seeking assets for victims of Bernard L. Madoff’s global Ponzi scheme filed a lawsuit on Sunday seeking $9 billion from a roster of defendants headed by HSBC, the London-based financial giant with hedge fund clients that fed piles of cash into the enormous fraud.
According to the complaint, a hedge fund official dealing with HSBC once attributed Mr. Madoff’s stellar performance — which later turned out to be purely fictional — to a “magic formula” that no one else could replicate.

Supreme Court To Take On Wal-Mart Bias Case

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court will consider throwing out a massive lawsuit that claims Wal-Mart pays women less than men and promotes women less frequently.
The justices stepped into a case Monday that could involve 500,000 to 1.5 million women who work or once worked at the world’s largest private employer. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. calls it the largest employment class action in history.
Wal-Mart is appealing a ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco that the class-action lawsuit could go to trial, with potentially billions of dollars in legal damages at stake.
Wal-Mart, based in Bentonville, Ark., and the many business interests backing its appeal, say allowing the large number of claims to go forward would set off an avalanche of similar class-action lawsuits in California and the other Western states overseen by the 9th Circuit.
But the lawyers representing the women who are suing Wal-Mart say there have been only eight such suits nationwide – and none within the 9th Circuit – since the first appeals court ruling in favor of the women nearly four years ago. “This threatened landslide of class-action litigation has not materialized,” the lawyers said in legal papers filed with the Supreme Court.
Wal-Mart employs 1.4 million people in the United States and 2.1 million workers in 8,000 stores worldwide. The company said the women should not be allowed to join together in the lawsuit because each outlet operates as an independent business. Since it doesn’t have a companywide policy of discrimination, Wal-Mart argued that women alleging gender bias should file individual lawsuits against individual stores.

Dhaki is from the southern region of Ethiopia. At age 13, instead of going to school, Dhaki was marrried and tended cattle for her family. Her husband, 11 years older than she, regularly forced himself on her. Her nightly cries were ignored by her neighbors, and she was shunned by her community for not respecting the wishes of her husband.
Sadly, millions of girls worldwide have little or no choice about when and whom they marry. One in three girls in the developing world is married before she is 18 – one in seven before she is 15. The reasons for child marriage vary: Custom, poverty and lack of education all play a part. Boys are married young, too, but a far greater number of girls are affected and it has a much more devastating impact on their lives.
