Happy Xmas (War Is Over)” is a Christmas song by John Lennon, Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band. It was recorded at Record Plant Studios in New York City in late October 1971, with the help of producer Phil Spector. It features soaring, heavily echoed vocals, and a sing-along chorus. The children singing in the background were from the Harlem Community Choir and are credited on the song’s single. The lyrics were written by Lennon and Ono, while the melody and chord structure were taken from the folk standard known as “Stewball”.[1]

Although the song is a protest song about the Vietnam War, it has become a Christmas standard and has appeared on several Christmas albums.

House rejects Obama’s tax cut compromise as one Democrat says “fuck the president”
    December 9, 2010
tags: congress, lame duck Congress, policies, Politics, President Obama, taxesby Steve Dennis
. There is a growing rift within the Democrat party as the far left’s aversion to compromise led the House to reject Barack Obama’s deal with the Republicans to extend the Bush tax cuts for two years.

This is what Nancy Pelosi had to say in rejecting the president’s attempt at coming to a bipartisan agreement to extend both the tax cuts and unemployment benefits:

We will continue discussions with the President and our Democratic and Republican colleagues in the days ahead to improve the proposal before it comes to the House floor for a vote

The House rejected this deal because it includes extending the Bush tax cuts on Americans who make over $250,000. The Democrats apparently do not understand what the word compromise means because they still want the whole ball of wax and appear unwilling to settle for anything less.

Barack Obama negotiated in good faith with the Republicans and he came up with a deal that neither side was totally happy with–but that is what happens when you compromise. The Democrats in the House, the liberal media, and the far left voters have lambasted the president because he had to give up something in order to reach a compromise so today the House rejected the deal he struck with Republicans.

It is becoming more and more obvious that the Democrats are not willing to compromise with the Republicans and will not agree to extend the Bush tax cuts on the rich no matter what the cost ends up being–even if that means struggling, unemployed middle class Americans will lose their unemployment benefits.

It appears as if there is no longer any room for compromise and little chance to get a deal done regarding the Bush tax cuts because the Democrats will not be happy until the Republicans cave in and give them everything they want in return for extending the tax cuts on middle class Americans. Between the tax cuts and the unemployment benefits the Democrats are holding the middle class hostage. We are nothing but pawns in their game to soak the rich and I for one find their unwillingness to compromise in the face of the electoral defeats they suffered in November when the American people rose up and rejected their radical agenda appalling.

This deal is tearing the Democrats apart as some look to support the president while others are so upset at Barack Obama that one unidentified Democrat lawmaker went so far as to say “fuck the president.” The tensions are so high in the Democrat party right now that they are losing all control and this is all because Barack Obama had the audacity to try to work with Republicans.

    Obama’s Statement on DADT
    By Kerry Eleveld

The White House of the Press Secretary issued the following statement from President Barack Obama regarding the failed vote on the defense authorization bill that included “don’t ask, don’t tell” repeal.

Statement by the President on the Senate Vote on the National Defense Authorization Act

I am extremely disappointed that yet another filibuster has prevented the Senate from moving forward with the National Defense Authorization Act. Despite having the bipartisan support of a clear majority of Senators, a minority of Senators are standing in the way of the funding upon which our troops, veterans and military families depend. This annual bill has been enacted each of the past 48 years, and our armed forces deserve nothing less this year.

A minority of Senators were willing to block this important legislation largely because they oppose the repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” As Commander in Chief, I have pledged to repeal this discriminatory law, a step supported by the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and informed by a comprehensive study that shows overwhelming majorities of our armed forces are prepared to serve with Americans who are openly gay or lesbian. A great majority of the American people agree. This law weakens our national security, diminishes our military readiness, and violates fundamental American principles of fairness, integrity and equality.

I want to thank Majority Leader Reid, Armed Services Committee Chairman Levin, and Senators Lieberman and Collins for all the work they have done on this bill. While today’s vote was disappointing, it must not be the end of our efforts. I urge the Senate to revisit these important issues during the lame duck session.

MAJOR FAIL…. Nader is a 2x LOOSER, and a CON MAN. why doesn’t he primary PBO?

Ralph Nader: I am looking for someone to challenge President Obama in 2012
By Elise Viebeck – 12/09/10 05:00 AM ET

Perennial third-party candidate Ralph Nader predicted on Wednesday that President Obama’s tax deal with Republicans will earn him a primary challenge in 2012.

Though he wouldn’t rule out another presidential campaign himself, Nader, 76, said he hoped a new face would take up the progressive cause.

“I’m not foreclosing the possibility … There are just other things to do,” he said in an interview. “And it’s time for someone else to continue. I’ve done it so many times. When I go around the country, I’m telling people they need to find somebody.”

Nader, a consumer advocate, described the immense procedural difficulty — the “obstructions and litigations” — of appearing on the ballot in every state as a third-party candidate. He ran under the Green Party banner in 1996 and 2000 and as an independent in 2004 and 2008 and earned less than 3 percent of the overall vote each time.

He said Obama’s decision to allow tax-cut extensions for the wealthy in the lame-duck deal betrays the progressives who supported his campaign in 2008 and called the president a “con man.”

      Quote

An unidentified Democratic lawmaker let slip his frustration at President Obama’s proposed tax compromise, apparently muttering “f**k the president,” during a heated debate this morning.

As Democratic House members met this morning in a closed-door session to determine if they would vote on the compromise tax plan the White House hashed out with GOP leaders, one member forgot the Capitol’s rules of good decorum.

With Lakers, Obama to do service
    By ABBY PHILLIP | 12/09/10 4:57 PM
President Obama will take part in a community service event with the Los Angeles Lakers, the NBA champions, at a Boys and Girls Club in Washington on Monday.

Obama will visit with kids and congratulate the team on its second consecutive championship, the White House says. Lakers coaches and staff also will participate in a service program at the club, which is east of the Anacostia River, in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the city.

Obama, an avid basketball fan and player, is continuing a tradition of presidents honoring championship teams in Washington. His service event will be his second this year to the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus, where he spoke about Father’s Day in May.

Lawrence O’Donnell Blasts Alan Grayson Over Tax Cuts: “Be An Adult About This!”
    Colby Hall | 9:25 am, December 9th, 2010
Last night Lawrence O’Donnell got into a very interesting and entertaining row with Rep. Alan Grayson over the extension Bush tax cuts. The back-and-forth between the host and the outgoing Florida Congressman started when Grayson confirmed that he would be voting against the tax bill, then launched into his inimitable style of aggressive rhetoric, attacking both the GOP and President Obama. After Grayson declared who he thought would be hit hardest if these tax cuts were not enacted, O’Donnell exasperatedly exclaimed “Wrong!” and things got even more heated from there.
We’ve long been fans of the job that Mr. O’Donnell does on his new show, largely because he is not afraid to call things as he sees them, and often surprises viewers. Case in point, the following segment, in which O’Donnell seems to set a trap for Grayson, only so that he can admonish him publicly (and score valuable points for moderates who don’t care for Grayson’s histrionics).

To be fair, in the opening part of the segment, Grayson makes a decent point. Comparing income taxes on the poor to the rich is apples and oranges. Hedge fund billionaires get most of their income from investments, which is what Grayson’s talking about. But O’Donnell takes great exception with some of Grayson’s assertions, and pointedly chides him to “be an adult about this.”

Robert Shrum: “The progressive resistance to the Obama deal on tax cuts is both unreasoning and unreasonable. Unreasoning because the opponents, whose anger is congealing into adamantine ideology inside the Democratic Party, are pulling out a cascade of objections but offering up no practical alternative. Unreasonable because what the president achieved — which in reality should be called an economic recovery package — is a fundamentally progressive deal.”

  12. Christine O’Donnell: Extending Unemployment Benefits A ‘Tragedy’ Like Pearl Harbor

    http://thinkprogress.org/2010/12/08/odonnell-jobless-benefits-tragedy

For the past year, conservatives have used specious, callous, and occasionally offensive arguments against extending unemployment benefits for jobless Americans, but former Delaware GOP Senate nominee Christine O’Donnell took this hyperbole over the top last night. O’Donnell is forming a new issues-oriented political action committee called “Christine PAC,” and at a launch event for the group in Virginia yesterday, O’Donnell called the extension of jobless benefits a “tragedy,” comparing it to Pearl Harbor and the death of Elizabeth Edwards:

“Today marks a lot of tragedy. … Tragedy comes in threes,” O’Donnell said. “Pearl Harbor, Elizabeth Edwards’s passing and Barack Obama’s announcement of extending the tax cuts, which is good, but also extending the unemployment benefits.”

O’Donnell continued: “The reason I say this is a tragedy is because his announcement of economic recovery was more of a potpourri of sound bytes. It’s like he took a little bit of what each party wanted and put it together. It’s not a solid plan constructed on sound economic principles.”

O’Donnell immediately tried to walk back her characterization of unemployment benefits as a “tragedy,” telling reporters after her remarks, “That’s not what I meant at all.” “If we’re going to extend the jobless benefits we have got to cut spending programs and that’s the flaw in his announcement,” she said. “That’s the tragedy.”

So helping Americans without a job to keep a roof over their head and feed their families is a tragedy? How stupid can this woman get?

Aretha Franklin, who has been suffering from a previously unknown illness, is “doing better than doctors expected” and should be released from the hospital this weekend, a cousin says.

Brenda Corbett tells the Detroit Free Press that “[Franklin] has a long life in front of her and will be back in concert, on stage, late spring or early summer.”

The statements come a day after another relative told Fox 2 Detroit that Franklin has cancer. And though the type of cancer has not been confirmed, The National Enquirer reports that the Queen of Soul has incurable and inoperable pancreatic cancer, and that doctors made the diagnosis after she broke her ribs in a fall over the summer.

In November, the icon’s publicist announced that she had canceled all her performances through May 2011.

On Dec. 2, the singer said she was doing well after having an operation for an unspecified ailment. “The surgery was highly successful,” Franklin, 68, said in a statement. “God is still in control.” The surgery followed a community prayer vigil in Franklin’s hometown of Detroit the previous day.

Rev. Jesse Jackson visited Franklin in the hospital days after her surgery and told The Detroit News that she was “recovering” and in high spirits.

The family also said that, at this time, she is doing “okay,” but they ask for continued prayers.

3 Chics will continue to lift her up in prayer.

Obama strives to mollify Dems on tax-cut deal
    By Kara Rowland

    The Washington Times
    10:03 p.m., Wednesday, December 8, 2010

President Obama finds himself in a quest for Democratic votes on Capitol Hill as mounting liberal anger over his tax-cut deal with Republicans has him pressuring lawmakers from the outside with high-profile endorsements and deploying White House officials to cajole them from the inside.

The dilemma over the Bush-era tax cuts means Mr. Obama will not be able to rely on support from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, both of whom have joined rank-and-file Democrats in expressing concern about the compromise the president struck earlier this week with the GOP.

The full-court press has involved a surprise Tuesday press conference by Mr. Obama, personal pleas to both Senate and House Democratic caucuses by Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and other officials, stepped-up television appearances by top aides and an onslaught of press releases from the Democratic National Committee touting prominent backers and local editorials in support of the measure.

The basic sell: While the temporary extension of tax cuts for wealthy Americans is a bitter pill to swallow, it’s worth it to ensure that middle-class Americans see their tax cuts extended, along with a series of tax breaks favored by Mr. Obama and unemployment-compensation benefits.

“It’s an imperfect agreement,” National Economic Council Director Lawrence H. Summers told reporters at a briefing Wednesday. But, he said, failure to approve it “would materially increase the risk the economy would stall out, and we would have a double-dip” recession.

Mr. Summers argued that taken together, extensions of middle-class tax breaks and jobless benefits and a payroll-tax holiday will boost gross domestic product and prompt financial firms to make upward adjustments to their economic forecasts

Jobless claims fall for second time in 3 weeks

WASHINGTON (AP) — Applications for unemployment benefits dropped last week to the second-lowest level this year, evidence that companies are cutting fewer jobs.

The Labor Department says first-time claims for jobless aid fell by 17,000 to a seasonally-adjusted 421,000 in the week ending Dec. 4. Wall Street analysts had expected a smaller decline.

The four-week average of claims, a less volatile measure, dropped for the fifth straight week to 427,500. That’s the lowest since August 2008, just before the financial crisis intensified with the collapse of Lehman Brothers.

Claims have fallen steadily in the past two months, raising hopes that companies will soon accelerate hiring. Applications dropped to 410,000 two weeks ago, their lowest point in more than two years
