“Baby, It’s Cold Outside“ is a pop standard with words and music by Frank Loesser. The song is popularly associated with winter weather, and although it does not refer to any specific time or holiday, it is commonly played alongside Christmas carols and popular winter holiday music.
Loesser wrote the duet in 1944 and premiered the song with his wife, Lynn Garland, at their Navarro Hotel housewarming party. Lynn considered it “their song,” and was furious when Loesser sold the song to MGM.[1]

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana State Senate employee has been formally reprimanded and suspended for a month without pay because she sent an e-mail to hundreds of government workers showing President Barack Obama as white.
Senate President Joel Chaisson announced the punishment Tuesday for Senate researcher Tammy Crain-Waldrop, who has been suspended since Dec. 1.
Crain-Waldrop can return to work Jan. 3 and must send a written apology to Senate and House staff and lawmakers. The more than 20-year Senate employee also will have to attend diversity training, according to an outline of the punishment released by the Senate.
Crain-Waldrop sent a message Nov. 30, obtained by The Associated Press, that included a doctored photo of Obama with light skin and said, “Do you like him any better now? No? Me neither ….. Then you’re not a racist.”
Several black lawmakers replied to the e-mail, complaining that it was offensive.
“It is clear that the nature of the e-mail in question was highly inappropriate. Such actions will not be tolerated,” Chaisson, D-Destrehan, said in a statement that called Crain-Waldrop’s e-mail a violation of Senate personnel policy.
After she sent the e-mail, Crain-Waldrop sent another message apologizing and saying she sent it to the Capitol e-mail post office box by mistake.
It’s unclear how many employees in state offices received the e-mail beyond legislators, their staffs and others who work directly in the Capitol.

BOSTON — A jury has ruled the Lorillard Tobacco Co. tried to entice black children to become smokers by handing out free cigarettes and has awarded $71 million in compensatory damages to the estate and son of a woman who died of lung cancer.
The Suffolk Superior Court jury announced its verdict Tuesday after hearing weeks of testimony.
Willie Evans alleged Lorillard introduced his mother, Marie Evans, to smoking as a child in the late 1950s by giving her free Newport cigarettes at the Orchard Park housing project in Boston, where she lived. He said his mother smoked for more than 40 years before dying of lung cancer at age 54.
The jury awarded Marie Evans’ estate $50 million in compensatory damages and gave her son $21 million. A hearing on possible punitive damages is set for Thursday.
During the trial, a lawyer for Lorillard, which is based in Greensboro, N.C., and also makes Kent, True, Old Gold, Maverick and Max cigarettes, said that like many other cigarette companies it gave away free samples decades ago to adults in an attempt to get them to switch brands. But the company insisted it did not give cigarettes to children and called the allegation that it intentionally gave samples to black children “disturbing.”

Segregation among blacks and whites fell in roughly three-fourths of the nation’s 100 largest metropolitan areas as the two racial groups spread more evenly between inner cities and suburbs. Still, ethnic segregation in many parts of the U.S. persisted, particularly for Hispanics.
“It’s taken a civil rights movement and several generations to yield noticeable segregation declines for blacks,” said William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution who reviewed the census data. “But the still-high levels of black segregation in some areas, coupled with uneven clustering patterns for Hispanics, suggest that the idea of a postracial America has a way to go.”
Income also varied widely by geography. Poverty ranged from 4 percent to more than 40 percent with many of the poor living on American Indian reservations in the High Plains. Amid swirling congressional debate over taxing the wealthy, just three U.S. counties reported a median household income of over $100,000 – all in Virginia.
In contrast, seven counties in 2000 – in Colorado, New Jersey, New Mexico and Virginia – had median income of more than $100,000, before the housing boom and then bust began to ravage household budgets.

In March, New Hampshire preschool teacher Gail O’Brien, who was unable to obtain health insurance through her employer, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma. Her subsequent applications for health insurance were rejected because of her condition. With each round of chemotherapy costing $16,000, she delayed treatment because she knew her savings wouldn’t last.

Harvard University Announcement
Harvard University announced over the weekend that from now on
undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard’s president Lawrence H. Summers said, “When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution. “If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free… no tuition and no student loans!
