Peaches & Herb are an American vocalist duo, once comprising Herb Fame (born October 1, 1942) and Francine “Peaches” Hurd Barker (April 28, 1947 – August 13, 2005). Herb has remained a constant in “Peaches & Herb” since its creation in 1966, while six consecutive women have filled the role of “Peaches.”
Herb Fame (born Herbert Feemster, October 1, 1942, in Anacostia, Washington, D.C.), sang in church and neighborhood groups as a child. After graduation from high school, he worked in a local record store where he met record producer Van McCoy and was signed to Columbia subsidiary Date Records by McCoy and A&R executive Dave Kapralik.[1] Francine “Peaches” Barker (born Francine Edna Hurd, April 28, 1947, in Washington, D.C.), using the stage name Francine Day,[2] started a singing trio initially dubbed The Darlettes and later renamed The Sweet Things after a change of record label to Date Records.[3] Having produced two releases for the trio, McCoy decided to record Feemster/Fame and Hurd/Day together at Kapralik’s suggestion.[4][5][6] The resulting single, “We’re in This Thing Together,” was distributed to radio stations but went nowhere for months until December 1966, when a St. Louis disc jockey broadcast the single’s B-side, a revival of the 1934 hit “Let’s Fall in Love.”[5][7]

Katie Couric spoke out against anti-Muslim bigotry and said America may need a Muslim version of “The Cosby Show” to counteract it.
Speaking on her web show, Couric said that the controversy surrounding the Islamic cultural center near Ground Zero had exposed a “seething hatred” for Muslims in America:
“I also think sort of the chasm between, or, the bigotry expressed against Muslims in this country has been one of the most disturbing stories to surface this year. Of course, a lot of noise was made about the Islamic Center, mosque, down near the World Trade Center, but I think there wasn’t enough sort of careful analysis and evaluation of where this bigotry toward 1.5 billion Muslims worldwide, and how this seething hatred many people feel for all Muslims, which I think is so misdirected, and so wrong–and so disappointing.
“She then said that she thinks there may need to be a Muslim version of “The Cosby Show.”

Update: NBC News reports that the plane that prompted US Capitol evacuation was a Piedmont Airlines Flight that was out of radio contact briefly, plane has now landed.

Malave, a probation officer who works in New Haven, says the racial abuse is so bad that he only crosses the town line into East Haven to go home. He and his wife are now preparing to sell their house and move, joining an exodus of Hispanics who say police have hassled them with traffic stops, false arrests and even jailhouse beatings.
The Justice Department has started a civil rights investigation, and the FBI recently opened a criminal probe. But that has not changed things on Main Street, where restaurants and stores that cater to Hispanics are going out of business.
If the goal of police was to ruin East Haven’s Hispanic community, some grudgingly say they have succeeded.

Black Marketing Exec Sues Sheriff for Tasering, ‘Pummeling’ on Traffic Stop
John Harmon, a diabetic who owns a marketing company, was pulled over after low blood sugar levels made him swerve into another lane. The sheriff’s deputies smashed his window, Tasered him, and charged him with resisting arrest. Now he’s suing.
Harmon, “a tall and burly black man,” in the words of The Cincinnati Enquirer, was commuting from his downtown Cincinnati office to the mostly white Anderson Township, where he’d recently moved. His blood sugar levels were low, and after swerving into the next lane, he was pulled over by two sheriff’s deputies.
According to the lawsuit Harmon filed with his wife, Deputies Ryan Wolf and Matthew Wissel approached Harmon’s 1998 Ford Expedition, Wolf with his gun drawn. In an interview with the Enquirer, Harmon described the experience:
“The deputy’s face was extremely contorted, he was screaming,” Harmon said. “I remember being taken aback, recoiled and thought, ‘What’s going on?’ I was being presented with pure evil, it was a chilling experience.”
Wolf smashed the driver’s side window.
Wissel shocked Harmon with a Taser for the first time. Deputy [John] Haynes responded to the deputies’ call for backup.

Gov. Christie praises his administration for work done after blizzard, chastises mayors for local efforts

TRENTON — At his first public event since a blizzard slammed the state, Gov. Chris Christie praised state workers and his administration for their response to the storm and said he wouldn’t have done anything differently.
Christie signed a letter in Freehold officially requesting aid from the federal government and then took questions, blaming mayors for people being trapped in their homes and Democrats and the media for the attention being given to his decisions to remain in Disney World on a family vacation while the state was inundated with snow.
“I would give the folks in New Jersey state government and the county government an A for the effort we put in,” Christie said. “We probably get a B for results.”
Christie said the state will review the clean-up effort and report to him and the public about changes that should be made to better respond to future storms.

Next year, Mississippi will make civil and human rights curriculum mandatory for public school students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. While civil rights is typically part of the Social Studies program, Mississippi will now be “the first state to require civil rights studies throughout all grades in its public school systems.” The subject will now be included in the assessment test students must pass to graduate. Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS), who signed the requirement into law five years ago, praised the new requirement: “To learn the good things about Mississippi and America and the bad things about Mississippi and America is important for every Mississippian.” These comments, of course, came “just days” before he offered his own version of civil rights history.
While school districts and the state government are celebrating the progressive change, one state representative took up a curmudgeon’s mission to kill the measure, filing a bill to repeal the law nearly every year since it passed. Convinced that civil rights will somehow interfere with his grandchild’s ability to “write a complete sentence and do math,” Moore fears a civil rights curriculum will accuse “one group of people” and will be “somebody’s philosophical idea of what civil rights are”:
Rep. John Moore, R-Brandon, has filed a bill to repeal the law nearly every year since 2006. Moore, who lives in a suburb of Jackson, said he wants to know who will write the textbooks and craft the materials students will be taught.
“I want schools to be teaching my grandchildren to read, write a complete sentence and do math,” Moore said. “I just want to make sure it’s teaching the truth and facts and not being accusatory of one group of people or the other. I don’t want it to be somebody’s philosophical idea of what civil rights are.”
