Issa Calls 9/11 Attacks in New York a Plane Crash

No doubt, Issa’s slur against World Trade Center rescue workers was the most unforgettable moment in a truly forgettable political career.

Desperate to refuse federal funds to the ailing workers who rushed to Ground Zero, Issa denied the September 11 carnage was an attack on the United States at all. As the New York Post summed it up:

“It’s very simple: I can’t vote for additional money for New York if I can’t see why it would be appropriate to do this every single time a similar situation happens, which quite frankly includes any urban terrorist. It doesn’t have to be somebody from al Qaeda. It can be someone who decides that they don’t like animal testing at one of our pharmaceutical facilities.”
Issa said the destruction of the World Trade Center did not involve a dirty bomb or a chemical weapon designed to make people sick.

“It simply was an aircraft, residue of the aircraft and residue of the materials used to build this building,” Issa said.

  3. Obama signs 9/11 health bill

    http://edition.cnn.com/2011/POLITICS/01/02/obama.9.11.bill/

Washington (CNN) — President Barack Obama signed the 9/11 health bill into law in Hawaii on Sunday, White House spokesman Bill Burton said.

Obama signed the bill during his Hawaiian vacation. No signing ceremony was held.

The bill made a long journey in order to get signed. A printed copy of the bill flew with a White House staffer from Washington to the Hawaiian island of Oahu, so Obama could sign it from his vacation rental in Kailua.

“It came out with a member of the staff so that it could be signed in a timely fashion,” Burton said.

The legislation, officially titled the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act, provides health coverage to first responders to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, who have been battling for federal help for years. It also reopens the federal Victim Compensation Fund to provide economic relief to those harmed by the attacks.

  5. Key House Republican: We Might Have Veto-Proof Majority For Repealing Health Care

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/02/fred-upton-health-care-repeal_n_803314.html#comments

NEW HAVEN — Incoming House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.) predicted on Sunday that House Republicans would not only have enough votes to repeal the president’s health care reform law, but also could have the numbers to override a presidential veto of that repeal, and would start the process before the upcoming State of the Union address.

“As part of our pledge we said that we would bring up a vote to repeal health care early,” Upton said during an appearance on Fox News Sunday. “That will happen before the president’s State of the Union address. We have 242 Republicans. There will be a significant number of Democrats, I think, that will join us. You will remember when that vote passed in the House, last march; it only passed by seven votes.

“Just wait. If you switched four votes from last march, that bill would have gone down. So we’ll take the Democrats that voted no, we will take other Democrats who probably agree with Speaker Pelosi’s statement. Remember when she said we want to pass this thing because then we’ll learn what’s in it? Well now the American public does know what is in it. Unpopularity numbers are as high as 60 percent across the country. I don’t think we’re going to be that far off from having the votes to actually override a veto.”

  7. Darrell Issa Takes Aim At Obama White House: ‘One Of The Most Corrupt Administrations’

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/02/darrell-issa-obama-corrupt_n_803331.html

The GOP’s top House investigator in the new Congress is putting the White House on notice that he’s going to be aggressive in going after what he considers wasteful spending by the Obama administration.

California Rep. Darrell Issa is set to lead the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee — and gain the chairman’s subpoena power.

During an appearance on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday morning, Issa was asked about a suggestion he made in November following the elections that President Obama “has been one of the most corrupt presidents in modern times.” The Republican congressman found himself addressing the controversial remarks despite having already expressed regret over his choice of words.

Issa, YOU & the GOP are the corrupt mofos. Where were you during the Bush years, mofo? Sorry sob!

  8. Tim Kaine: Obama Unlikely To Face Serious 2012 Primary Challenge

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/02/tim-kaine-obama-unlikely-_n_803316.html

WASHINGTON — The national Democratic Party chairman says he thinks the chances that President Barack Obama will face a serious primary challenger in 2012 are “virtually nil.”

Tim Kaine says there’s always the possibility that a fringe candidate could try to mount a challenge. But Kaine says Democrats feel very good about Obama’s re-election prospects if, as Kaine puts it, the president keeps doing the job that people elected him to do.

Kaine also told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday that he expects to continue as party chairman for another two-year term

Obama craves familiarity on Hawaiian vacation

HONOLULU (AP) — There are those who crave adventure and spontaneity during their vacations. Then, there’s President Barack Obama.

More than a week into his Hawaiian holiday, Obama is proving to be a creature of habit, seeking refuge in the comfort and consistency of a familiar routine.

The president’s itinerary during his annual trip to Oahu, the island where he was born and mostly raised, is downright predictable. He is almost certain to spend his mornings working out at Marine Corps Base Hawaii. A leisurely dinner with friends and family at Alan Wong’s Restaurant, an award-winning eatery in the neighborhood where Obama grew up, is a yearly tradition. And a guaranteed place to spot the president is at Island Snow, a shop near his rented oceanfront home, where he treats daughters, Malia and Sasha, to shave ice, the Hawaiian version of the snow cone.

So, doesn’t the president ever want to mix things up a bit, maybe go somewhere new?

Not really, says White House spokesman Bill Burton, who is with the president in Hawaii.

    SKIP

While Obama’s trips here still generate excitement, some Hawaii residents would like to see the president more engaged with the community.

“I know security and logistics can be a challenge, but I would love to see him visit a couple of neighborhoods,” said Eve Proenca, who lives in Honolulu’s Kaimuki area.

“Just because we’re in Hawaii and it’s paradise doesn’t mean it’s paradise for everyone,” said Mike Irvine, who has lived in Honolulu since 1985. “Going to a black church, or maybe a homeless shelter would be a big deal.”

“Security and logistics, I know that can be a challenge, but I would love to see him visit a couple of communities,” he said.
