As longtime Eat The Press readers may know, I have lived most of my life in the Commonwealth of Virginia. I schlepped around this state for many years, doing time in its finest universities and bars and auto impound lots before finally settling in Arlington County, a small Northern Virginia community founded by people who like voting and Salvadoran-style chicken. A lot of you might be reading the news these days and wondering to yourselves: “Virginia: are they fixing to secede from the Union?” And the answer is: “Probably, I think?”
Consider, if you will, House Joint Resolution No. 557, which will establish “a joint subcommittee to study whether the Commonwealth should adopt a currency to serve as an alternative to the currency distributed by the Federal Reserve System in the event of a major breakdown of the Federal Reserve System,” probably backed by Jefferson Davis’s Secret Gold Stash and minted on tobacco leaves.

The Commonwealth of Virginia would begin minting its own gold and silver coins as an alternative currency to the U.S. dollar under a bill that Virginia Del. Bob Marshall (R-Prince William) says he will file in coming days. Marshall will ask the General Assembly to consider the idea when it convenes for its annual legislative session Jan. 12. It is a companion bill to a proposal he has already filed to establish a study committee to examine alternative currencies to that distributed by the Federal Reserve System “in the event of a major breakdown of the Federal Reserve System.”
Marshall said his intention is to inject competition into the national economy and force the federal government to change monetary policy he believes is leading to hyperinflation. According to his bill, “many widely recognized experts predict the inevitable destruction of the Federal Reserve System’s currency through hyperinflation in the foreseeable future.” His critique mirrors that of the Tea Party movement, some of whose members have called for the end of the Federal Reserve system.

“It happened on Tuesday, I was coaching youth practice, and then two guys came up and one of the other coaches that was helping me out, they said there was a cop and another guy out there waiting for me,” Volkmann told MMAWeekly.com. “I went out there and the guy introduced himself and said he was from the Secret Service and he wanted to ask me some questions about UFC 125 and my quote. He said there were people calling in to D.C. telling them that somebody, me, was threatening the President.”

Small businesses offering health care. Re: Obamacare
The first statistics are coming in and, to the surprise of a great many, Obamacare might just be working to bring health care to working Americans precisely as promised.
The major health insurance companies around the country are reporting a significant increase in small businesses offering health care benefits to their employees.
Why?
Because the tax cut created in the new health care reform law providing small businesses with an incentive to give health benefits to employees is working.
We certainly did not expect to see this in this economy,” said Gary Claxton, who oversees an annual survey of employer health plans for the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation. “It’s surprising.”

NPR Exec Resigns Over Juan Williams Firing

National Public Radio has completed an external, independent review of last year’s firing of then-NPR news analyst Juan Williams for comments he made about being a-scurred of people in “Muslim garb” on airplanes. Per NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik, the review found that the Williams firing “was legal and within terms of contract.” Nevertheless, NPR was advised to undertake a thorough review of “ethics and other policies,” with an emphasis on “outside appearances by NPR News personnel.”
NPR’s Mark Memmott has the organization’s statement, addressing what’s to come:
“In light of the review and feedback provided to them, the Board has adopted recommendations and remedial measures designed to address issues that surfaced with the review. The recommendations and remedial measures range from new internal procedures concerning personnel and on air-talent decisions to taking appropriate disciplinary action with respect to certain management employees involved in the termination. Some of these changes have already been made and others are in process. Specifically, the Board adopted recommendations that NPR:
“– Establish a committee comprised of NPR personnel, respected journalists, and others from outside NPR to review and update NPR’s current Ethics Code (the “Code”).

In another move to center, president to name Sperling as economic adviser

President Obama will announce Friday that Gene Sperling will serve as director of the national economic council.
Obama will make the announcement during a trip to the Thompson Creek Window Company manufacturer in Maryland, where he will also comment on the December unemployment report. The report is expected to show the economy added as many as 170,000 jobs in December.
Sperling, whose appointment has been widely anticipated, is a former Clinton administration official who has been serving as an adviser to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. He served as a national economic adviser for President Clinton, coordinating the administration’s economic policy, including passage of the 1993 Deficit Reduction Act.
The appointment is another step by the White House to move to the center and to improve Obama’s relationship with business. It follows by a day Obama’s announcement that former Clinton administration Commerce Department Secretary William Daley will serve as chief of staff at the White House.
During former President George W. Bush’s administration, Sperling worked in the private sector, and most recently earned nearly $900,000 working part-time on a philanthropic project for Goldman Sachs, and roughly another $150,000 delivering speeches primarily to financial firms.

CBO says health care repeal would deepen deficit

Rescinding the federal law to overhaul the health-care system, the first objective of House Republicans who ascended to power this week, would ratchet up the federal deficit by about $230 billion over the next decade and leave 32 million more Americans uninsured, according to congressional budget analysts.
The rough estimate by the Congressional Budget Office also predicts that most Americans would pay more for private health insurance if the law were repealed. The 10-page forecast was delivered Thursday to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio), installed a day earlier to shepherd the new GOP majority. He immediately dismissed it.
The CBO’s assessment, arriving as Republicans have mobilized to make the law’s repeal the first major House vote of the new Congress, touches on a sensitive area for the GOP. Republicans are vowing to take tough measures to reduce the deficit, although they already have exempted the health-care measure from rules requiring that any spending increases be accompanied by offsetting reductions so that the net effect on the deficit is null

Global sensation Ted Williams, the homeless man with the pitch-perfect voice, has been offered a role in a Jack Nicholson movie, Entertainment Tonight reported Thursday.
The 53-year-old Ohio man has been flooded with job offers after showcasing his pitch-perfect voice in a YouTube video recorded by a Columbus Dispatch reporter.
He is currently weighing up an offer as an announcer for NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers and was offered a commercial stint recording an ad for Kraft Macaroni & Cheese that will air on ESPN during the Fight Hunger Bowl on Sunday.
Now he may be making his way into Hollywood.
