  1. Bag thought to be Loughner’s contains type of ammo used Saturday

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/CRIME/01/13/arizona.shooting.investigation/index.html

Tucson, Arizona (CNN) — A bag that is believed to belong to Arizona shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner contains the same kind of ammunition as was used in Saturday’s massacre, the Pima County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

“We got ammunition in there and it matches the type used in the incident,” department bureau chief Richard Kastigar told CNN’s “John King USA.”

Kastigar said that other items in the bag “tell us that there is a relationship between what’s in the bag, what happened Saturday, what his movements were leading up to that time.”

Kastigar would not elaborate on what else was in the bag but said “it gives us some indication to where (Loughner) was and what he was doing.”

The bag, discovered on Thursday, has been transferred to FBI custody for further analysis, according to Pima County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Jason Ogan.

Police say Loughner’s father, Randy, recalled that his son was carrying a black bag the morning of the shooting that left six people dead and another 13 wounded.

The bag was the subject of an argument with his father just hours before the attack, according to Pima County Sheriff’s Department Capt. Chris Nanos.

The bag was found when a teenager walking his dog spotted it in a “wash,” or dry river bed, near where Loughner’s family lives on Thursday morning, Nanos said.

The teen then turned it over to a neighbor, who called police.

“We certainly believe this is the bag,” Nanos said.

On Wednesday, Kastigar said Loughner was carrying the bag early Saturday when he had a brief discussion with his father in the Loughners’ front yard.

“The father asked him questions similar to ‘What are you doing? What is that?’ and Jared mumbled something back to his dad, and his dad said he didn’t understand what was said,” Kastigar said. “It was unintelligible, and then Jared left.”

The elder Loughner got in his vehicle and tried to follow his son, but could not find him, he said.

The bag will be tested for DNA, fingerprints, hair — anything that might link it to Loughner. Investigators also likely will show it to Randy Loughner to see if he recognizes it, Nanos added.

Several boxes of 9mm ammunition and receipts were found in the bag, a law enforcement source said Thursday.

The source did not indicate where the receipts were from, but CNN has previously reported that a law enforcement source said Loughner purchased ammunition at a Walmart store.

“There are other things in the bag, but I’m not going to discuss the specifics,” Kastigar said Thursday. “We need to substantiate through others who might have been involved with what is in the bag how (things) got there.”

Investigators believe Loughner spent the night at a Motel 6 the evening before the shooting, Nanos said.

Authorities would not say how they discovered that information, but say they recovered a credit card from Loughner after the shooting.

The New York Times first reported the news. The Times said that the interview is scheduled to span over several commercial breaks.

‘It’s time for a new person,’ U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison says

By GROMER JEFFERS JR. / The Dallas Morning News

Kay Bailey Hutchison said today that she will not seek another term in the U.S. Senate.

“I have known since 2006 that I wouldn’t seek another term,” the senator said in a telephone interview. “I wanted to announce it on my own terms and in my own way

Hutchison, first elected to the Senate in 1993, said the swearing-in of the new Congress, among other things, made her feel it was the right moment to announce her resignation.

She predicted that her departure from the political scene would set off a rampage of candidates looking to replace her.

“It’s just time for people to start making their plans,” Hutchison said. “Now it’s time for a new person.”

Likely Republican contenders to succeed her include Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert , state Sen. Florence Shapiro of Plano , Railroad Commissioners Elizabeth Ames Jones and Michael Williams, Weatherford car dealer Roger Williams, and Ted Cruz, a former Texas solicitor general and candidate for state attorney general.

Possible Democratic contenders include former Texas Comptroller John Sharp and former Houston mayor Bill White.

Doctors: Giffords sitting up, more alert
    Published: Jan. 13, 2011 at 2:05 PM

TUCSON, Jan. 13 (UPI) — Doctors in Tucson Thursday began performing “aggressive physical therapy” on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, calling her recovery miraculous.

Giffords, who was shot in the head Saturday during a meet-and-greet with constituents in the parking lot of a Tucson grocery store, “is starting to become aware of her surroundings,” Dr. Michael Lemole said.

The Arizona Daily Star reported doctors have Giffords sitting up with her legs dangling over the side of her hospital bed. She is keeping her unbandaged eye open for as long as 15 minutes at a time and can move both her arms and her legs, something Lemole called miraculous given the extent of her injuries.

“This is a major leap forward. This is a major milestone,” said Lemole, adding that doctors had begun “aggressive physical therapy” on the congresswoman.

Breaking News Alert: Giffords reaches ‘major milestone’ in recovery, doctors say

  8. Glock 19: How did Unemployed Jared Loughner Buy Popular, Expensive Pistol?

    http://abcnews.go.com/Business/questions-remain-jared-loughner-paid-expensive-firearm/story?id=12585290

The the Glock 19 Jared Lee Loughner allegedly used to try to assassinate Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is a popular firearm around the world. Questions remain about how Loughner would be able to afford the gun which costs about $450, not including ammunition and magazines.

Little is known about Loughner’s employment record. He volunteered at a local pet shelter in January and February of last year, according to the New York Times, which reported he was told not to come back after he refused to follow the rules about where to walk the dogs. Loughner said on his application at the shelter that he worked at an Eddie Bauer store in Tucson from October 2008 to November 2009.

In an interview with Diane Sawyer on Monday, Pima County, Ariz., Sheriff Clarence Dupnik refused to comment on the alleged shooter’s home life, but said, “I can tell you this is a somewhat dysfunctional family.”

How did Jared Loughner purchase a glock for $1000 and he had no job. He couldn’t even hold a job. So where did the money come from? Who funded that gun?

    Follow the money….

Christina Taylor Green’s slaying has profound impact on Tucson children
By Philip Rucker and Dana Hedgpeth

    Thursday, January 13, 2011; 12:10 AM

TUCSON – The bodies of the six dead will be buried here beginning Thursday, and the first in a series of ceremonies set to take place across this grieving city will be perhaps the most poignant.

A 9-year-old girl who was recently elected to the student council, who went to a supermarket last weekend to meet her congresswoman and learn more about government, will have her funeral at a Catholic church just a few miles from where a gunman took her life.

The slaying of Christina Taylor Green has had an especially profound impact on the children of this desert city. At memorials across Tucson, kids and their parents have left teddy bears and yellow daisies, candles and get-well-soon balloons. They’ve written cards, drawn peace signs and tied ribbons.

Adults have grappled with how to explain to confused children why a strange man would allegedly shoot and kill Christina for no apparent reason. At Mesa Verde Elementary School, teachers consoled Christina’s distraught classmates, who have covered a fence near the jungle gym with messages for the third-grader.

“Christina, we love you from the bottom of are [sic] heart,” read one.

“You were always a sister to me . . . and always will be,” wrote her best friend, Serenity. She included a picture from their first sleepover.

Since Saturday’s shooting rampage, children have passed by University Medical Center, where Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and other victims are being treated. At a vigil on the hospital’s front lawn, kids have left letters that are testimonials to their innocence.

“Dear Gabrielle Giffords,” sixth-grader Briana Aruizu wrote in pink ink. “I am sorry you got shot. I am glad you are safe in the hospital. . . . Christina Taylor Green is in heaven now. I did not know why all of this happened to you. I am so sorry.”

  10. Tucson tea party founder says Giffords to blame for getting shot

    http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/5dGrUd/www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/01/tucson-tea-party-founder-giffords-blame-shot/

One tea party leader says that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) has herself to blame for getting shot in the head Saturday.

The Arizona congresswoman shouldn’t have attended an event “in full view of the public” if she had security concerns, according to Tucson Tea Party co-founder Trent Humphries.

Giffords warned MSNBC’s Chuck Todd last year that there would be “consequences” to violent rhetoric and imagery after Fox News’ Sarah Palin released a graphic which placed crosshairs over the congresswoman’s district.

“But the thing is that the way that [Palin] has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gunsight over our district,” Giffords said. “And when people do that, they’ve gotta realize there’s consequences to that action.”

But Humphries thinks Giffords was just speaking out against Palin for political gain.

Can these people get any lower?

  12. Fox News’ Brit Hume Questions Tone, Timing Of Arizona Memorial

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/13/brit-hume-tone-arizona-shooting-memorial_n_808432.html

A panel on Fox News’ “Special Report” weighed in on the memorial service held on Wednesday for the victims of the Arizona shooting. While panelists Brit Hume, Charles Krauthammer and Chris Wallace all had high praise for President Obama’s speech, Hume seemed perplexed by what he called the “tone” of the event. The audience had peppered the speeches with regular applause and cheering, and this appeared to surprise Hume.

“I think the president prepared this speech in the expectation that this would be indeed a memorial service,” he said. “I think it ended up being nothing of the kind. This was much more of a pep rally and perhaps that’s precisely what the people of Tuscon and the people of this region needed…and wanted.”

Also, he said, the event had perhaps been held “a little late…certainly the mood in that auditorium suggested the sense of mournfulness that you might have expected and sobriety you might have expected was not to be found tonight.” Hume continued that the opening Native American blessing, which was given by Carlos Gonzalez, a professor at the university, was “remarkable.” By the time it was over, he said, Gonzalez had “blessed the reptiles of the sea and he had prayed to the four doors of the building and while I’m sure that all has an honorable tradition with his people, it was most peculiar.”

    Brit

There is no fault. The President helped uplift the nation last night…. So stfu!
