For Immediate Release January 19, 2011 Remarks by President Obama and President Hu of the People’s Republic of China at Official Arrival Ceremony
    South Lawn
    9:20 A.M. EST

PRESIDENT OBAMA: Good morning, everyone. President Hu, members of the Chinese delegation, on behalf of Michelle and myself, welcome to the White House. And on behalf of the American people, welcome to the United States.

Three decades ago, on a January day like this, another American President stood here and welcomed another Chinese leader for the historic normalization of relations between the United States and the People’s Republic of China. On that day, Deng Xiaoping spoke of the great possibilities of cooperation between our two nations.

Looking back on that winter day in 1979, it is now clear. The previous 30 years had been a time of estrangement for our two countries. The 30 years since have been a time of growing exchanges and understanding. And with this visit we can lay the foundation for the next 30 years.

At a time when some doubt the benefits of cooperation between the United States and China, this visit is also a chance to demonstrate a simple truth. We have an enormous stake in each other’s success. In an interconnected world, in a global economy, nations — including our own — will be more prosperous and more secure when we work together.

WASHINGTON — Touching on a key source of tension between the U.S. and China, President Barack Obama greeted Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday by stressing the need for nations to observe universal human rights. Hu responded with a call for both countries to respect each other’s core interests.

Obama welcomed Hu to the White House with full honors and a red-carpet greeting, marking the start of daylong meetings to address trade, security and human rights issues that have been the cause of past strain between the two powers.

“History shows that societies are more harmonious, nations are more successful and the world is more just when the rights and responsibilities of all nations and all peoples are upheld including the universal rights of every human being,” Obama said in his remarks.

President Hu Jintao is beside himself. He’s been living for this moment, to be honored by a State dinner with the POTUS.

Great photos, SG2. The illustate all the pomp & pagentry for such an occassion. I hope the visit is a productive one for both nations.

I have a difficult time not being impressed by our president each time I see or hear him. He never fails to exude confidence without seeming smug…and no matter who’s in the room….he’s almost always going to be the smartest.

That it is so difficult for so many to give him the respect he has EARNED continues to amaze me. He is a class president among some very crass people.

I plan to continue to watch him work. I have come to realize that all the noise about him being a “one term president” is wishful thinking by a lot of irrelevant people who really can’t quite figure him out…or quite grasp the amazing surge in his numbers with ALL segments of our society.

I think he is preparing some very tough lessons in politics for some of these long time slick creep types like McConnel, Boehner, and that little twerp, Cantor. This will be some real fun heading toward 2012.

Cheney aka Darth Vader is pushing the one term meme. He’d better watch himself. He’s got a NO term fake heart.
