State of the Union: Did Obama Win His Future?

In his State of the Union speech, President Obama certainly reached out to the Republicans, praised American innovation and know-how, and for the most part avoided lightning rod issues on either side. It was a huge leap forward for a president who was close to life support just a few months ago. If his goal was to avoid getting into deeper trouble and getting as much bipartisan applause as possible, he certainly achieved those goals. And Supreme Court bashing was out, even though the ruling he complained about last year still stands.
The centerpiece was his praise of America and its ability to be competitive.
But, if President Obama hopes to “win the future” in 2012, his speech came up short Tuesday night. It was certainly a big and earnest move to the center, but it lacked the kind of specifics and innovative policies that the president needs to make America competitive in the 21st Century.

WASHINGTON – It wasn’t Kumbaya, it was more. We have finally witnessed it: “Love Train” Moment in the capital.
The president almost made John Boehner cry by praising him as a working class hero. That was to be expected. But in his tour-de-force of good fellowship Tuesday night, Barack Obama went further.
For an hour or so, he shrewdly (and in his own interest) ended the anger of our politics, even though he had been a full-throated participant in some of its mayhem minutes in the last two years.
Instead, when he was done delivering his feel-good, oh-so-sensible and sotto voce State of the Union address, I expected the sound system in the House to begin blasting the O’Jays’ classic–and to see the members dancing in a conga line in the aisles, Coors Light in hand.
Early polls showed that the speech was one of the most well-received he has ever given.
Allow me to switch metaphors. Obama is a boxing fan. So he knows that he did a clinch tonight. He’s been losing on points, so he draped himself all over his foe mid-ring. That way, the president gathered strength while preventing his fresher opponent from getting any punching distance.
How did the president do this? Well, he capitalized on the obvious opportunity in the aftermath of Tucson to call for peace.

Mr. Speaker, Mr. Vice President, Members of Congress, distinguished guests, and fellow Americans:
Tonight I want to begin by congratulating the men and women of the 112th Congress, as well as your new Speaker, John Boehner. And as we mark this occasion, we are also mindful of the empty chair in this Chamber, and pray for the health of our colleague — and our friend — Gabby Giffords.
It’s no secret that those of us here tonight have had our differences over the last two years. The debates have been contentious; we have fought fiercely for our beliefs. And that’s a good thing. That’s what a robust democracy demands. That’s what helps set us apart as a nation.
But there’s a reason the tragedy in Tucson gave us pause. Amid all the noise and passions and rancor of our public debate, Tucson reminded us that no matter who we are or where we come from, each of us is a part of something greater — something more consequential than party or political preference.
We are part of the American family. We believe that in a country where every race and faith and point of view can be found, we are still bound together as one people; that we share common hopes and a common creed; that the dreams of a little girl in Tucson are not so different than those of our own children, and that they all deserve the chance to be fulfilled.
That, too, is what sets us apart as a nation.

On Friday afternoon when congressional Republicans chose Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) to give their official response to the State of the Union address, many Democrats were thrilled. By most traditional measures Ryan is a good choice for Republicans; he is young, handsome, articulate and affable. But that is secondary to the reason he was tapped to represent the GOP. Rather, it is because Ryan has become the Republicans’ ideological leader on fiscal issues, which are expected to play an important role in President Obama’s address. House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) said in a statement, “Paul Ryan is uniquely qualified to address the state of our economy and the fiscal challenges that face our country.” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) praised Ryan’s “unique understanding of the fiscal problems we face.”

Ryan comes across like that other “rising star” of the GOP…Bobby Jinglebells.
That either of these two idiots would have the temerity to VOLUNTARILY follow a speaker like Barack Obama is an indication of their lack of judgment or a very much undeserved smugness .
I think this is Obama’s problem too. Every time he speaks he raises the bar for his next speech. In contrast, Ryan was like a third grader who wet his pants while waiting to go on. Maybe it was the dampness that him look and sound so juvenile!
I hear you, but if anything POTUS is consistent in his speaking, and addresses the issues in the moment. He might read from a teleprompter, but they are NOT talking points.
I’d have an ounce of tolerance for the GOP, if they’d bring forward someone who can at least present as honest natural and with heart. Nope! Ryan’s another winger robot.

GOP aides irked with CNN for airing Bachmann speech

Here’s an interesting twist on Michele Bachmann’s plan to offer her own Tea Party-flavored response to Obama’s State of the Union speech: It turns out GOP aides are annoyed with CNN for agreeing to air her speech in its entirety.
Originally, Bachmann’s response was going to be available for viewing only on the Internet. But CNN has announced that her speech will be shown in full in addition to broadcasting the speech from GOP Rep. Paul Ryan, who was picked for the official response by the Republican leadership.
GOP aides are unhappy with the decision, because it risks making the opposition look conflicted — as if the two are trying to upstage one another — muddling GOP efforts to offer a unified response.
“CNN is basically inventing a conflict that doesn’t really exist,” a GOP aide emails. “It’s not responsible journalism.”
CNN’s decision to air Bachmann’s speech, interestingly, is angering liberals and Republicans alike. Steve Benen notes this morning that Bachmann’s Tea Party brew could end up making Ryan’s speech look moderate and reasonable in comparison. Both Benen and Atrios also point out that it could create a fundamental imbalance — two Republicans responding to one speech from Obama — and that there’s no way CNN would allow a liberal Dem to offer a response from the left, as Bachmann is doing from the hard right.
But Republicans, too, have reason to be annoyed about this. Granting such a high profile to Bachmann’s Messianic Tea Party air won’t help the GOP manage the already difficult task of offering a response that has a chance of competing with Obama’s speech.
The President already has a big built-in advantage during State of the Union speeches, and the designated opponent already faces an uphill climb when trying to rise to his stature. Elevating Bachmann, of all people, will likely complicate this dynamic even further.
Of course, it may be that Bachmann’s moment won’t matter at all politically to Obama or Republicans in the long run. But there is one clear winner in all this: Bachmann herself. By granting her such a large platform, CNN is generously enabling her efforts to cement her national status as a kind of Tea Party GOP leader-in-exile, and is basically rewarding her for her stunt.

More than two months after his deficit commission first laid out a plan for reining in the national debt, President Obama has yet to embrace any of its controversial provisions – and he is unlikely to break that silence Tuesday night.
While Obama plans to stress the need to reduce record budget deficits in his State of the Union address, he is not expected to get into the details and will instead call for members of both parties to work together to tackle the problem, according to congressional and administration sources.

Six on Supreme Court to Attend State of the Union

Chief Justice John Roberts and five associate justices are expected to attend President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address Tuesday night, sending a message of national unity after the murder of a federal judge and attempted assassination of a congresswoman in Arizona earlier this month.
Last year’s speech sparked a protocol skirmish between the three branches of government, after Democratic members cheered the president when he criticized a Supreme Court decision striking down limits on corporate political spending. One justice in attendance, Samuel Alito, was visibly outraged, and Chief Justice Roberts later questioned whether the purportedly apolitical judiciary had any business sitting within the partisan mosh pit during the annual ritual.
Several justices long have felt it inappropriate to attend the annual presidential speech, regardless of partisan stripe. Justices Antonin Scalia and John Paul Stevens, who retired last year, often dueled over constitutional interpretation, but both typically skipped the State of the Union. Justice Clarence Thomas sometimes attends, but didn’t last year. On the other hand, some justices, particularly Stephen Breyer, believe it’s important to take their place in the tableau, visually signifying that all three branches ultimately are part of the same American experiment in self-governance.
In addition to Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Breyer, Tuesday’s high court procession likely will include Justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Mr. Obama’s two appointees, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.
As it happens, the author of the opinion Mr. Obama slammed last year, Justice Kennedy, showed no distress at the time and later shrugged off the president’s comment.
On the other hand, no one should interpret the absence of Justice Alito–who joined the Kennedy opinion, known as Citizens United, along with the chief justice and Justices Scalia and Thomas–as some rebuke to Mr. Obama.
To the contrary, Justice Alito has chosen to make a pilgrimage to the president’s birthplace, where he will deliver a lecture Wednesday to the Hawaii State Bar in Honolulu.

There was a time that it might have been reasonable to refer to SCOTUS as “apolitical,” but no more!
The horrendous and treasonous move to install GWB in the Oval Office in 2,000, combined with the “Citizens United” decision, the incestuous relationship between Scalia and Cheney, the involvement of Thomas AND his wife with ….the tea baggers…. are but a few examples that The Supreme Court Of The United States of America is now no longer “apolitical” (If ever it was) but might well be second only to The Fox Network as a kind of surrogate for the GOP.
With the time left, and an almost guaranteed second term…(Hey! Look at the dismal bunch of gemokes the GOP brags about as “presidential material,”) Obama needs to add some strong, liberal/progressive voices to this court.
And when the GOP hollers like a bunch of stuck pigs about “judicial activism,” simply respond with :scaliathomasrobertsalito, shrug your shoulders, and tell them to go blow it out their duffel bags !
