  1. Hawaii Bill Would Charge $100 For Obama Birth Records

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/27/hawaii-birther-bill_n_815183.html#comments

HONOLULU — Anyone would be able to get a copy of President Barack Obama’s birth records for a $100 fee under a bill introduced in the state Legislature that backers hope will finally dispel claims he was born elsewhere.

The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member.

The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House’s Democratic leadership and committee chairmen.

The idea behind the measure is to end skepticism over Obama’s birthplace while raising a little money for a government with a projected budget deficit exceeding $800 million over the next two years.

“If it passes, it will calm the birthers down,” said the bill’s primary sponsor, Rep. Rida Cabanilla. “All these people are still doubting it because they don’t want the birth certificate from Obama. They want it from our state office.”

So-called “birthers” claim there’s no proof Obama was born in the United States, and he is therefore ineligible to be president. Many of the skeptics question whether he was actually born in Kenya, his father’s home country.

The Obama campaign issued a certification of live birth in 2008, an official document from the state showing the president’s Aug. 4, 1961, birth date, his birth city and name, and his parents’ names and races.

Hawaii’s former health director also has said she verified Obama’s original records. And notices were published in two local newspapers within days of his birth at a Honolulu hospital.

Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie, who was a friend of Obama’s parents and knew him as a child, said last month he wanted to release more of the state’s birth information about Obama. But he ended the effort last week when the state attorney general told him that privacy laws bar disclosure of an individual’s birth documentation without the person’s consent.

  5. Obama: Drug Legalization ‘Worth A Serious Debate’

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/27/obama-drug-legalization-debate_n_815074.html

WASHINGTON — Drug legalization is an “entirely legitimate topic for debate,” President Barack Obama said Thursday during his online YouTube town hall, in response to a question from a former deputy sheriff who has turned sour on the drug war.

In endorsing such a debate, Obama went further than any president has since the start of the war on drugs, which can be traced back at least to President Richard Nixon, but more realistically to the early 20th century, when the federal government began criminalizing drugs that had long been legal.

Obama, who said again toward the end of his answer that drug legalization is “worth a serious debate,” lent legitimacy to a policy area that has long been relegated to the “unserious” corner of American political discourse.

  6. Nelson Mandela Hospitalized In South Africa

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/27/nelson-mandela-hospitaliz_n_815037.html

JOHANNESBURG — Former South African President Nelson Mandela was hospitalized for a second straight day Thursday for what his office described as routine tests but which drew concern over the health of the 92-year-old anti-apartheid icon.

Mandela undergoes regular hospital checkups, but his latest visit starting Wednesday stretched into an unusually long stay. Journalists camped outside the hospital Thursday as Mandela’s relatives and friends entered for visits. President Jacob Zuma, attending the World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland, is being updated on developments by the defense minister, whose department is responsible for current and former presidents’ health care, Zuma’s office said.

The presidency cautioned reporters not to put pressure on Mandela’s doctors and to give “a national hero” dignity and respect.

Rich corporations “must share wealth” to avoid unrest

(Reuters) – Poverty and unemployment reared their heads at the World Economic Forum on Thursday, with speakers urging the elite audience to bridge a growing gap between booming multinationals and the jobless poor.

Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, who also chairs the Socialist International group of center-left parties, said the global crisis had led to an “unsustainable” race to the bottom in labor standards and social protection in developed nations.

“Politically, I believe we are at a turning point where… there are signs in Europe of more nationalism, more racism, anti-Muslim, anti-Semitism, fundamentalisms of all types,” he said. “We need to look to a different model.”

Maurice Levy, chairman and chief executive of French advertising giant Publicis, said there was “a huge suspicion about CEOs, bankers, corporations.”

  11. Next Stop For Michelle Obama’s Obesity Fight: The U.S. Army

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/27/michelle-obamas-obesity-f_n_814711.html

FORT JACKSON, S.C. — First lady Michelle Obama is visiting the Army’s largest training post to see how the military turns couch potato recruits into strong and nutrition-minded soldiers.

The first lady, who has taken on the cause of battling childhood obesity, was to speak Thursday to the latest crop of new soldiers at their graduation ceremony at Fort Jackson in central South Carolina.

Her battle against children’s lack of fitness intersects with the nation’s need to field fit troops for the Army.

Fort Jackson, which trains more than 60,000 soldiers annually and more than half the Army’s female soldiers, is one of the service’s five major posts for basic and advanced individual training.

Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, who recently overhauled the way the Army feeds its troops during training, also revamped the Army’s physical training regimen.

Hertling was slated to brief the first lady on how new soldiers are given exercises for core body strength and stamina. Bayonet drills have been dropped in favor of zigzag sprints, pugil stick workouts and stepped up calisthenics to increase power, strength and agility for soldiers facing rigorous campaigns in places like Afghanistan.

Mess halls now feature dark greens, whole grains and no-fat milk instead of calorie-laden fried foods, sugary desserts and sodas.

Red, yellow and green markings above each food item tell soldiers which foods are good for their energy level, which ones will keep them full, and which should be eaten in moderation.

Drill sergeants now call out recruits who don’t put enough fruits and veggies on their plates, and hold hour-long sessions on performance nutrition to help them understand the Army wants “soldier athletes.”

  12. The Murder of Brisenia Flores

    http://www.balloon-juice.com/2011/01/27/the-murder-of-brisenia-flores

Will Bunch has a truly heartbreaking, infuriating post up on the murder of nine-year-old Brisenia Flores and her father in Arizona in 2009. Brisenia’s mother survived by playing dead.

The killers were newly minted Tea Partiers and fledgling Minutemen, and I think it’s safe to say they were influenced by at least one Tea Party rally in Arizona before carrying out their murders. Shawna Forde, the mastermind of the operation, had apparently cooked up an idea to murder and rob drug dealers to fund her anti-immigrant activities. She and her accomplice, Jason Bush, broke into the Flores home on May 30, 2009.

    From the ongoing trial:

According to testimony, Bush shot Flores, then Gonzalez. Gonzalez was hit in the shoulder and leg and slumped to the floor. She testified that she played dead as she heard Bush pump more bullets into her husband as Brisenia woke up.

“Why did you shoot my dad?” the girl asked, sobbing, according to Gonzalez’s testimony. “Why did you shoot my mom?”

Gonzalez said she heard Bush slowly reload his gun and that he then ignored Brisenia’s pleas and fired.

People like Forde and Bush are life-long losers, criminals, racists. Forde has an erratic past and was described as unstable. Bush has ties to the Aryan Nation. These are scummy people, and they’d be scummy people without Glenn Beck or the Tea Party. But having a cause based on fear and hatred and bigotry just fuels these sorts of bigots. It gives them a moral edifice, however bizarre, to justify their actions. Murder and theft aren’t crimes – they’re part of the revolution! Gunning down a nine-year-old girl is part of the resistance, it’s patriotic! And Beck and others, including members of the Arizona government, who are fomenting fear and paranoia over immigration are at least partly to blame.

Maybe this is what Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik was talking about in the wake of the Giffords shootings.

Gunning down 9 year olds is now considered patriotic? God help this country! These thugs don’t deserve to breathe oxygen again. Purge them from the face of the earth.

  13. Palin Responds To Obama’s State Of The Union Speech: ‘A Lot Of WTF Moments’ (VIDEO)

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/01/27/palin-responds-to-obamas-sotu-wtf_n_814674.html#comments

During an interview as surprising as a cold winter night in Alaska, Sarah Palin took issue with Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address.

But TV stations in Anchorage still hire weather casters and Fox News still interviews Palin, who had some particularly harsh words on Wednesday.

“That was a tough speech to have to sit through and kinda’ try to stomach, because the president is so off base in his ideas on how it is that he believes government is going to create jobs,” said the former vice presidential candidate. “Obviously government growth won’t create any jobs, it’s the private sector that can create the jobs.”

Host Greta Van Susteren had specifically asked for job creation options that differed from Obama’s, but Palin decided to keep the focus on how much she disliked the president’s.

“His theme last night in the State of the Union was the WTF — winning the future,” continued Palin. “I thought, ‘OK.’ That acronym? Spot on. There were a lot of WTF moments throughout that speech.”

When asked if she agreed with what the president had to say about the “Sputnik moment,” Palin identified the matter as one of those “WTF” instances. “He needs to remember that what happened back then with the former communist USSR and their victory in that race to space, yeah, they won, but they also incurred so much debt at the time that it led to the inevitable collapse of the Soviet Union,” she said.

This ignorant bee itch doesn’t have the intelligence to comprehend anything the President says. She’s forever injecting herself in a conversation that she doesn’t have a clue about. Dumb ignorant wasilla trash.

    • Ametia says:

Palin’s just itching to place our POTUS in the crosshairs, isn’t she?

Go home, woman, go on back to Alaska and club some fish.

      • Oh, when Karma comes a calling on this bee itch…

      • Ametia says:

She and Bachman can’t help themselves. They’re going NUTSO, because POTUS is not giving them any attention.

The beckies want the president to give them his attention. LOL Sorry ladies, the POTUS is married to a beautiful, black, intelligent First Lady Michelle!
