Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born 30 March 1945) is an English guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. Clapton is the only three-time inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: once as a solo artist, and separately as a member of The Yardbirds and Cream. Clapton has been referred to as one of the most important and influential guitarists of all time.[2] Clapton ranked fourth in Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time”[3] and fourth in Gibson’s Top 50 Guitarists of All Time.[4]
In the mid sixties, Clapton left the Yardbirds to play blues with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. In his one-year stay with Mayall, Clapton gained the nickname “Slowhand”, and graffiti in London declared “Clapton is God.” Immediately after leaving Mayall, Clapton formed with drummer Ginger Baker and bassist Jack Bruce the trio Cream, in which Clapton played sustained blues improvisations and “arty, blues-based psychedelic pop.”

Husband tweets ‘huge day’ for Giffords
For the latest on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, check out this Twitter message from her husband Mark Kelly:
“Today was a huge day for GG. Lots of progress!”
Giffords, an Arizona Democrat, is in a rehabilitation hospital in Houston, where she is recovering from a gunshot wound to the head.
It’s not clear what Kelly meant.
Giffords was shot in a Jan. 8 rampage outside a Tucson supermarket that left six people dead. The FBI has said she was the target of the attack.
Last week, the Democratic lawmaker was transferred from Tucson to TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Her progress at that time was said to be moving at “lightning speed.”
Kelly, an astronaut who is scheduled to command space shuttle Endeavour in April, is based in Houston. NASA has a backup in case Kelly decides he can’t make the mission.
Kelly’s twin brother, Scott, the commander of the International Space Station, told the Associated Press that Mark Kelly will soon make a decision on whether to go ahead with the assignment.
“He’s doing about as best as anyone could in this situation,” Scott Kelly said about his brother. “He’s concentrating on Gabby’s care. But he’s also been going back to work.”

President Obama Signs START Treaty, Doesn’t Allow Reporters in the Room

President Obama signed the START nuclear disarmament treaty with Russia this morning.
Despite the great attention the president has devoted to this treaty — and the vast coverage of the treaty negotiations by the media — the White House refused to allow reporters or TV cameras in the room. Still photographers were the only representatives of the free press permitted to record the historic moment.
Those cameras captured President Obama signing the documents, seated at the Resolute Desk. Behind him stood Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., Dick Lugar, R-Ind., Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Thad Cochran, R-Miss., and Vice President Biden.
The White House Correspondents Association protested the White House’s decision to refuse to permit reporters access to the event, in addition to the dearth of press briefings since the crisis in Egypt began to unfold, a crisis in which President Obama continues to celebrate the great freedoms and openness enjoyed in this country.

The long (and rocky) relationship of Barack Obama and John McCain

President Obama will meet with Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain at the White House today, their first one-on-one summit since the immediate aftermath of the 2008 election.
Obama reached out to McCain after the senator penned an editorial praising the president for his speech in Arizona, which came in the wake of the shootings in Tucson.
The stated topics of discussion will be the Egypt uprising, trade, earmark reform, the economy and immigration, according to a source familiar with the agenda.
But, the real focus of the meeting will almost certainly be repairing a relationship between the two men that has fallen on hard times in the wake of the 2008 presidential campaign.
That relationship has never been easy and its rockiness has often played out in public — before, during, and after the 2008 election.
A brief history of the highlights — and lowlights — of Obama/McCain (or McCain/Obama) is after the jump.
* February 2006: Then freshman Sen. Barack Obama approached John McCain on the Senate floor to propose the two work together on ethics reform. The collaboration collapsed within days, in an exchange of nasty letters that — shocker! — found their way into the media’s hands. McCain was particularly vicious, attacking Obama’s “self-interested partisan posturing” and “disingenuousness.”
* March 11, 2006: At the annual Gridiron Dinner — a regular gathering of Washington politicians and press — Obama sang a song about the ethics dust-up to the tune of “If I Only Had a Brain.” Sample lyrics: “I could be a great uniter, making ethics rules much tighter, If I only had McCain.”
* December 16, 2007: Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) endorsed McCain over Obama in the 2008 presidential race. Lieberman had been an early Obama mentor in the Senate and had stood by Lieberman’s side during his 2006 primary challenge from cable television magnate Ned Lamont. (Lieberman lost that race.) But, Lieberman’s close personal friendship with McCain seemed to trump those Obama ties and the Connecticut Senator went so far as to speak at the Republican National Convention in 2008.
*June 16, 2008: McCain and Obama could not agree on a series of town hall meeting designed to provide a full airing of their views to the public. The Republican nominee wanted a dozen, while the Democrat wanted only five. McCain eventually held the town halls on his own, constantly pointing to the empty space where his opponent would have been.
*June 19, 2008: McCain went after Obama for not opting in to the public campaign finance system after promising during the primary to do so. “This is a big, big deal,” McCain said. “He has completely reversed himself and gone back, not on his word to me, but the commitment he made to the American people.”
* August 1, 2008: In a biting campaign ad, McCain compared Obama to Jesus and Moses, mockingly referring to his opponent as “The One.”
* October 8, 2008: McCain drew headlines after a debate in which he referred to Obama as “that one.” Critics chided McCain for being “nasty,” his campaign responded that Obama’s was “the fussiest campaign in American history.”
* September 24, 2008: McCain suspended his campaign in order to go back to D.C. to work on the economic bailout plan. He asked the Obama camp to delay a debate scheduled for that Friday; Obama refused, and McCain agreed to attend only 10 hours before the event was scheduled.
* January 19, 2009: Obama hosted a dinner for McCain in advance of the inauguration. “John is not known to bite his tongue,” Obama said, “and If I’m screwing up, he’s going to let me know.”
* August 25, 2009: McCain held a town hall at which he jabbed President Obama on health-care reform. However, when an audience member suggested that Obama was flouting the Constitution, McCain pushed back. “I’m sure he respects the Constitution … I am absolutely convinced he is sincere in his beliefs,” McCain said. “I just disagree…He is the president of the United States, and let’s be respectful.”
* February 25, 2010: At a bipartisan health care summit at Blair House, McCain accused Obama of not living up to his campaign promises. When the president cut in, saying “the election’s over,” McCain responded, “Well, I’m reminded of that every day.”

Jobs in Wisconsin: What happened to Walker’s agenda?

As Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday delivers his first “state of the state” address, working men and women across Wisconsin are wondering what happened to the jobs agenda that played such a prominent role in November’s election.
As a candidate, Walker pledged that addressing unemployment – currently 7.5% statewide but higher in urban and some rural areas – would be his administration’s top priority and the focus of a special session of the Legislature. It was part of his promise to create 250,000 jobs by 2014.
So far, it’s hard to pinpoint any action by the governor that creates a single job or does anything to boost the state from its economic slump.
There certainly isn’t a new job to be found in Senate Bill 1 and Assembly Bill 1, the so-called tort reform legislation passed during the session. The measure severely limits the legal protections of workers and consumers injured through acts of corporate negligence or malfeasance, such as the “Big Blue” crane accident that led to the deaths of three ironworkers during the construction of Miller Park.
A witness testifying on behalf of the legislation flatly refused to say if it would create any jobs, calling it a “trick question.”

And with the news comes an interesting suggestion from the New York Times: maybe a man should take the reins.
And why not? Letitia Baldrige, social secretary to Jackie Kennedy, agrees, remembering that in 1961, “there was a man named J. B. West who was really the manager of the White House. He did everything that a social secretary should do; he set a style.” However West, who was dubbed chief usher never wanted to be called Social Secretary because it sounded “too frippery.
Why not, bring on a man. They got to get paid too. Who would fit into this position tho?

Schools to compete for Obama commencement address

The White House is offering public high schools across the country a chance to win a commencement address by President Barack Obama.
For the second year in a row, the White House is challenging students to demonstrate how their school prepares them for college and a career. Obama will speak at the winning school’s graduation, as he did last year at Michigan’s Kalamazoo Central High School.
The contest is part of Obama’s Race to the Top education initiative to reform the nation’s schools.
The White House says more than 1,000 high schools competed in last year’s contest.

Sotomayor Reflects on First Years on Court

CHICAGO — Justice Sonia Sotomayor, speaking at a law school here on Monday, said she had “taken heat” at her Supreme Court confirmation hearings two summers ago in part because she was the first Hispanic nominee.
“People have views of me and expectations of me that are based on stereotypes,” she said.
In her most candid and extensive public remarks since joining the court in 2009, Justice Sotomayor reflected on the advice she had received from colleagues, her discomfort with becoming a celebrity and the role public opinion plays in judicial decision making.
She offered advice to lawyers who appear before the court and to students who want to serve as law clerks there. And she criticized Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., saying his approach to matters of racial justice was too simplistic.
She spoke for 90 minutes at the University of Chicago Law School, answering questions from Prof. David A. Strauss and from students. A recurring theme was that the public still did not know her very well.
“People mistake exuberance, passion and intensity for self-confidence,” she said.
She was asked if she had a special responsibility in cases concerning race, gender and class.
“I do think I have a special role on the court,” the justice responded, “but not in the way that you think.”

Midwest buckles under storm, calls it a snow day

CHICAGO – A massive storm billed as the worst in decades barreled toward the northeast Wednesday, leaving vast swaths from Chicago to New York paralyzed by snow and ice, leaving hundreds of motorists stranded all night and shuttering airports and schools.
Chicago received up to 17 inches of snow with more still possible, and Missouri as much as 1 1/2 feet. More than a foot dropped on northern Indiana and southeast Kansas, while Oklahoma saw as much as a foot.
In the Northeast, spots in northern New York had already gotten more than a foot of snow. New York City was expected to get up to three-quarters of an inch of ice by midday before the mix of sleet and freezing rain warms up to rain.
Forecasters warn that ice accumulations could knock down some tree limbs and power lines. Ice also could affect transit service, even as plow drivers struggled to keep up with the snow on many roads.

Anderson Cooper and his crew have been attacked by supporters of Hosni Mubarak in Egypt, according to CNN.
CNN’s Steve Brusk tweeted that “Anderson said he was punched 10 times in the head as pro-Mubarak mob surrounded him and his crew trying to cover demonstration.”
A CNN update said that “no one was seriously hurt” in the attack.

Last week, Arizona state Rep. Judy Burges, a Republican, introduced a bill that would bar presidential candidates who do not prove they were born in the United States from appearing on the ballot in the Grand Canyon state. And state Rep. Chad Campbell, the top Democrat in the GOP-controlled Arizona House of Representatives, tells Mother Jones that the bill is likely to pass. It was introduced with 25 co-sponsors in the House and 16 co-sponsors in the state Senate; the measure needs 31 votes in the House and 16 in the Senate for approval. “Will it matter?” asks Campbell. “We’ve started a tradition here of passing legislation that is political grandstanding or that sets up litigation.”
