Halle Berry and Gabriel Aubry, battling for custody of their daughter Nahla, have both thrown some mud, but after word about Aubry’s alleged racism got out, Berry is firing back.
In a new interview with EBONY Magazine, Berry says (via TMZ), “I feel she’s Black. I’m Black and I’m her mother, and I believe in the one-drop theory.”
That goes against the wishes of Aubry, who, allegedly, doesn’t like when people call Nahla black. That’s inconvenient for Berry, who, according to sources, told Aubry he was only good for one thing — sperm of a different genetic makeup than her own.
Berry’s people have also leaked out that Nahla is supposedly afraid to go near Aubry, though the truth seems far too elusive to grab at this point. (source)

Egypt protests: Hosni Mubarak’s concessions rejected
Hundreds of thousands of Egyptians have poured into Cairo’s Tahrir Square for the latest protest calling for Hosni Mubarak’s government to step down.
Correspondents say it is the biggest demonstration since the protests began on 25 January.
It comes despite the government’s announcement of its plans for a peaceful transfer of power.
President Mubarak has said he will stay until elections in September.
In Tahrir Square, attempts by the army to check the identity cards of those joining the demonstration were abandoned because of the sheer weight of numbers.
Our correspondent says the message to the authorities is simple – there is huge support from all walks of Egyptian life for the protests, and the government’s concessions are not enough.
Wael Ghonim, a Google executive was detained and blindfolded by state security forces for 12 days, was feted by the crowds as he entered Tahrir Square.

More Than Half Of The Responses To Issa’s Job Creation Survey Came From Lobbyists »
Yesterday, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) released the responses he received to a request he made last month for business, trade associations, and think tanks to identify regulations that they’d like to see eliminated or reduced. Many of the responses took aim at the Environmental Protection Agency, but there was plenty of concern reserved for regulations from both the Affordable Care Act and the Dodd-Frank financial reform law.
Issa is pitching this product as the manifestation of Congress finally listening to “job creators.” In fact, his new website for soliciting further responses is located at “americanjobcreators.com.” “This project is an opportunity for private industry to put forward detailed and specific examples so that both the American people and policymakers can determine for themselves what actions can be taken to create jobs,” Issa said in a statement paired with the release of the responses

On Health Care, Justice Will PrevailBy LAURENCE H. TRIBE

THE lawsuits challenging the individual mandate in the health care law, including one in which a federal district judge last week called the law unconstitutional, will ultimately be resolved by the Supreme Court, and pundits are already making bets on how the justices will vote.
But the predictions of a partisan 5-4 split rest on a misunderstanding of the court and the Constitution. The constitutionality of the health care law is not one of those novel, one-off issues, like the outcome of the 2000 presidential election, that have at times created the impression of Supreme Court justices as political actors rather than legal analysts.
Since the New Deal, the court has consistently held that Congress has broad constitutional power to regulate interstate commerce. This includes authority over not just goods moving across state lines, but also the economic choices of individuals within states that have significant effects on interstate markets. By that standard, this law’s constitutionality is open and shut. Does anyone doubt that the multitrillion-dollar health insurance industry is an interstate market that Congress has the power to regulate?
Many new provisions in the law, like the ban on discrimination based on pre-existing conditions, are also undeniably permissible. But they would be undermined if healthy or risk-prone individuals could opt out of insurance, which could lead to unacceptably high premiums for those remaining in the pool. For the system to work, all individuals — healthy and sick, risk-prone and risk-averse — must participate to the extent of their economic ability.
In this regard, the health care law is little different from Social Security. The court unanimously recognized in 1982 that it would be “difficult, if not impossible” to maintain the financial soundness of a Social Security system from which people could opt out. The same analysis holds here: by restricting certain economic choices of individuals, we ensure the vitality of a regulatory regime clearly within Congress’s power to establish.
The justices aren’t likely to be misled by the reasoning that prompted two of the four federal courts that have ruled on this legislation to invalidate it on the theory that Congress is entitled to regulate only economic “activity,” not “inactivity,” like the decision not to purchase insurance. This distinction is illusory. Individuals who don’t purchase insurance they can afford have made a choice to take a free ride on the health care system. They know that if they need emergency-room care that they can’t pay for, the public will pick up the tab. This conscious choice carries serious economic consequences for the national health care market, which makes it a proper subject for federal regulation.
Even if the interstate commerce clause did not suffice to uphold mandatory insurance, the even broader power of Congress to impose taxes would surely do so. After all, the individual mandate is enforced through taxation, even if supporters have been reluctant to point that out.

Even as a Democrat I have a high degree of admiration for Ronald Reagan the man….but it is important to remember that his refusal to heed the scientists and medical professionals regarding the oncoming disaster called HIV allowed that disease to gain a frightening foothold while the Reagan administration chose to literally IGNORE the situation.
A prompt response may well have begun an effort that could have resulted in fewer deaths and misery….but it was not to be.
If there is a reason for such a “hands-off” approach to a communicable disease of such magnitude it seems safe to assume that this do-nothing approach was based on the desire of the administration to please—or at least not offend—the religious right who saw this horrible disease as “punishment” for gay people.
Serious thought and discussion ought be given to the question; “Would the reaction of the Reagan administration have been different if they had realized early on that this was to be a disease that would affect tens of thousands of “straight” people as the magnitude of the disaster became clear?”
To my knowledge, during the course of the early days of the AIDS epidemic, Mr. Reagan never publicly used the terms “HIV,” or “AIDS!”
His decision to ignore this danger surely gave this terrible disease an opportunity to gain ground—costing lives and misery.
This too is a part of the Reagan legacy and deserves public examination.

Keith Olbermann to Join Current TV [REPORT]

Keith Olbermann, the controversial liberal pundit and former host of MSNBC’s Countdown With Keith Olbermann, will announce tomorrow that he’s joining Current TV.
Olbermann made headliens last month when he abruptly announced his departure from MSNBC. Speculation has been rampant over his next move, with Olbermann teasing his Twitter followers about his plans.
According to The New York Times, Olbermann will not only get a prime spot in Current TV’s lineup; he will also be receiving an equity stake in the company. As the channel unabashedly leans to the left of the political spectrum, Olbermann is likely to be more candid and off-the-cuff on any new show he may be hosting on the channel.
Current TV, founded in 2005, is owned primarily by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, businessman Joel Hyatt and Comcast (which has a 10% stake). It focuses on news and public affairs content, though it has added more entertainment content since former MTV Networks President Mark Rosenthal took over as CEO.
Olbermann is said to also be pursuing other ventures, including a potential Internet destination. It’s no secret that he’d like to build a media empire of his own.
Olbermann will likely bring new energy and attention to the struggling TV channel. In 2009, it laid off 80 employees, about 20% of its staff at the time. It also doesn’t have the distribution that MSNBC has on cable. The pairing of Olbermann and Current TV could give the channel the boost it needs to regain relevancy.

Clinic Near Baden-Baden Considered For Mubarak

Will Hosni Mubarak travel to Germany as a patient as part of a graceful exit strategy for the Egyptian president? Plans for a possible hospital stay here appear to be more concrete than previously believed. SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned that a luxury clinic near Baden-Baden is being favored.
The United States government’s scenario for an end to the political chaos in Egypt appears to be this: President Hosni Mubarak travels to Germany for a “prolonged health check” that would offer the 82-year-old a dignified departure. Over the weekend, the New York Times reported that secret talks to that effect were being held between the US government and Egyptian military officials.
According to information obtained by SPIEGEL ONLINE, plans for a possible hospital stay in Germany are far more concrete than had been assumed so far. Talks are already being held with suitable hospitals, particularly with the Max-Grundig-Klinik Bühlerhöhe in the southwestern town of Bühl near Baden-Baden, SPIEGEL ONLINE has learned from sources close to the clinic. The hospital management declined to comment.
The luxury clinic has an excellent reputation, as well as a respected oncology department, and says on its website it offers “first-class medical care” and the “comfort and service of a top hotel.” Patients are accommodated in suites up to 200 square meters (2,152 square feet) in size. Former Ukrainian President Vickor Yushchenko and former Russian Economics Minister German Gref have been treated there.

As we mark the centennial of Ronald Reagan’s birth, one of our major political parties has become imbued with the Gipper’s political philosophy and governing style. I mean the Democrats, of course.
The Republican Party tries to claim the Reagan mantle but has moved so far to the right that it now inhabits its own parallel universe. On the planet that today’s GOP leaders call home, Reagan would qualify as one of those big-government, tax-and-spend liberals who are trying so hard to destroy the American way of life.
Some Republicans, I suppose, might be so enraptured by the Reagan legend that they are unaware of his actual record. I hate to break it to Sarah Palin, but Reagan raised taxes. Often. Sometimes by a lot.

On behalf of the people of the United States, I congratulate the people of Southern Sudan for a successful and inspiring referendum in which an overwhelming majority of voters chose independence. I am therefore pleased to announce the intention of the United States to formally recognize Southern Sudan as a sovereign, independent state in July 2011.
After decades of conflict, the images of millions of southern Sudanese voters deciding their own future was an inspiration to the world and another step forward in Africa’s long journey toward justice and democracy. Now, all parties have a responsibility to ensure that this historic moment of promise becomes a moment of lasting progress. The Comprehensive Peace Agreement must be fully implemented and outstanding disputes must be resolved peacefully. At the same time, there must be an end to attacks on civilians in Darfur and a definitive end to that conflict.
As I pledged in September when addressing Sudanese leaders, the United States will continue to support the aspirations of all Sudanese—north and south, east and west. We will work with the governments of Sudan and Southern Sudan to ensure a smooth and peaceful transition to independence. For those who meet all of their obligations, there is a path to greater prosperity and normal relations with the United States, including examining Sudan’s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism. And while the road ahead will be difficult, those who seek a future of dignity and peace can be assured that they will have a steady partner and friend in the United States.
