Michelle Obama, with Malia and Sasha, skiing in Colorado this weekend

First lady Michelle Obama and her daughters, Malia and Sasha, left the White House on Friday evening for a weekend ski trip to Vail, Colo., the White House said Saturday.
President Obama, who spent Thursday and Friday meeting with technology executives on the West Coast, is not on the trip, according to aides.
“The First Lady and the Obama daughters are on a private family trip to Colorado,” Michelle Obama’s spokeswoman, Katie McCormick-Lelyveld, confirmed in an e-mail. “The First Lady and several close family friends are chaperoning their children on a ski trip. Personal expenses are being paid for by the Obamas.”
Michelle Obama and Sasha, 9, visited Spain last July with family friends while Malia, 12, attended summer camp. The first lady also took the girls without their father to London and Paris in June 2009.
She will return to London in late May when she joins her husband on an official state visit to Britain, a trip the White House announced Thursday.

Ayman al-Zawahri Releases Video On Egypt Uprising

CAIRO — Al-Qaida’s deputy leader, Ayman al-Zawahri, issued the terror network’s first message since the upheaval began in Egypt, saying the country’s rule has long “deviated from Islam” and warning that democracy “can only be non-religious.”
The wave of popular protests that ousted Egypt’s president, Hosni Mubarak, appeared to have caught al-Qaida off guard. The terror group had long called for the destruction of Mubarak’s regime – and al-Zawahri, an Egyptian doctor, was part of a militant uprising against Mubarak in the 1990s that was crushed.
But the demonstrations were led by secular, liberal activists calling for greater democracy – in stark contrast to the Islamic state that al-Zawahri and al-Qaida call for. In past videos and messages, al-Zawahri has frequent denounced democracy because it replaces God’s laws with man’s.
In the 34-minute videotape issued Friday, al-Zawahri makes no mention on the protests or Mubarak’s fall. The video is dated to the Islamic lunar month of Safar, which corresponds with the dates Jan. 5-Feb. 3. It gives no more specific date for its creation.
The only hints that it may have been made since the upheaval that began Jan. 25 were its title, “A Message of Hope and Glad Tidings to Our People in Egypt,” and a vague reference by al-Zawahri to “what happened and happens in Egypt.”
In it, he gives a long, detailed lecture on Egypt’s modern history from the 18th Century, blaming Western colonialists for implanting secular, un-Islamic law, according to a transcript by the SITE Intel group, a U.S. group that monitors militant messages. It said the video, which showed only a still photo of al-Zawahri as his voice is aired, was posted on Islamic militant websites.
The video said it was the first of two parts, aimed at answering the question “what is the reality through which Egypt is living?”
“The reality of Egypt is the reality of deviation from Islam,” al-Zawahri said.
He called the Egyptian regime – apparently referring to Mubarak’s rule – “a regime that rules the people through the use of torture, rigged elections, corrupt media and an unjust justice system.”

Ex-Palin aide rips her in leaked manuscript

A leaked manuscript by one of Sarah Palin’s closest aides from her time as governor charges that Palin broke state election law in her 2006 gubernatorial campaign and was consumed by petty grievances up until she resigned.
The unpublished book by Frank Bailey was leaked to the media and widely circulated on Friday.
The manuscript opens with an account of Palin sending Bailey a message saying “I hate this damn job” shortly before she resigned as Alaska’s governor in July 2009, less than three years into her four-year term. The manuscript goes on for nearly 500 pages, a mixture of analysis, gossip and allegation.
Copies of the manuscript were forwarded around Alaska political circles on Friday. The Daily News received copies from multiple sources, the first from author Joe McGinniss, who is working on his own Palin book. McGinniss didn’t respond to a message asking where he obtained the manuscript and the reason he circulated it.

Two years ago, congressional Republicans welcomed President Obama into the White House by stridently opposing his effort to rescue the plunging economy. At a time when businesses were laying off hundreds of thousands of workers per month, Republicans who had spent years in power racking up debt were unwilling to compromise on even a scaled-back stimulus bill. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act garnered support from zero Republicans in the House and just three in the Senate.
On February 17, 2009, Obama signed the Recovery Act into law, saying, “Today does not mark the end of our economic troubles. But it does mark the beginning of the end.” In the 24 months since, Republican politicians have simultaneously railed against the law, deriding it as a “failure” and denying that it created jobs, and taken credit for its success. Meanwhile, the devastating job losses that Obama inherited have turned into job gains: the economy added about 1.1 million jobs in 2010, more than the combined total of President Bush’s eight years in office.
After cynically rooting against the recovery for two years, Republican lawmakers no longer ignore the signs of progress. Instead, they are shamelessly crediting their new House majority and Obama’s bipartisan tax compromise for job creation and GDP growth that predated both. And after campaigning on an incessant chorus of “Where are the jobs?” Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) now says that if Republican policies cause job losses, “so be it.”

Professor Resigns After Telling Black Student ‘Slaves Were Always Late’

A Murray State University professor has resigned after allegedly making racial remarks to a black student.
Mark Wattier, a political science professor, told freshman Arlene Johnson last August that he wasn’t surprised that she didn’t show up on time to a film he started 15 minutes before class began.
The Murray Ledger and Times has more:
Arlene Johnson, a freshman from Sikeston, Mo., told the Ledger & Times in a telephone interview that one day in August, she came to class early to find that a film was already in progress. She said that after class, she and another student asked professor Mark Wattier why the film had started before the official start time of the class, and she said he told them that when screening films, he typically started them 10-15 minutes before class.
“We said, ‘Well, we didn’t know that. It wasn’t on the syllabus, so we were unaware,'” Johnson said. “And then he said, ‘Well, it’s OK, I expect it of you guys anyway.’ We asked him, ‘What did that mean?’ And he said the slaves never showed up on time, so their owners often lashed them for it. He just didn’t have the right.”
Wattier was originally suspended without pay from the university. He appealed his suspension and claimed that he was depressed. According to the Western Kentucky Star, Wattier wrote in an e-mail that he challenged the suspension so he could “express his regret” to Johnson.
Johnson, at the very least, wants an in-person apology. “I deserve that,” she said.
Mark Wattier deserves a LASHING for his bigoted remark.

MADISON, Wis. — Sarah Palin says union members protesting Wisconsin Republicans’ plan to help balance the state’s budget by cutting collective bargaining rights are taking up “the wrong fight at the wrong time.”
Palin weighed in on the debate in a Friday night posting on her Facebook page but didn’t indicate whether she would join weekend conservative counter-protests organized by groups including the Tea Party Patriots and Americans for Prosperity.
In the posting addressed to “union brothers and sisters,” Palin says Wisconsin taxpayers shouldn’t be asked to pay for benefits “that are not sustainable.” She says “real solidarity means everyone being willing to sacrifice.”
New Republican Gov. Scott Walker insists the concessions he’s seeking from public workers are necessary to deal with Wisconsin’s projected $3.6 billion budget shortfall and to avoid layoffs.

Wisconsin Dems Could Stay Away For Weeks

MADISON, Wis. — Democrats on the run in Wisconsin avoided state troopers Friday and threatened to stay in hiding for weeks, potentially paralyzing the state government in a standoff with majority Republicans over union rights for public employees.
The dramatic flight from the state stalled a proposal that seeks to ease Wisconsin’s budget woes by cutting the pay, benefits and collective bargaining rights of many government workers. Democrats who stayed in Madison scored their own victory, forcing the state Assembly to adjourn until at least Tuesday without taking a vote.
