Gil Scott-Heron (born April 1, 1949) is an American poet, musician, and author known primarily for his late 1970s and early 1980s work as a spoken word performer and his collaborative soul works with musician Brian Jackson. His collaborative efforts with Jackson featured a musical fusion of jazz, blues and soul music, as well as lyrical content concerning social and political issues of the time, delivered in both rapping and melismatic vocal styles by Scott-Heron. The music of these albums, most notably Pieces of a Man and Winter in America in the early 1970s, influenced and helped engender later African-American music genres such as hip hop and neo soul.
“The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” is a song by Gil Scott-Heron, which first appeared on his 1970 album Small Talk at 125th and Lenox, on which he recited the lyrics, accompanied by congas and bongo drums. A re-recorded version, with a full band, was the B-side to Scott-Heron’s first single, “Home Is Where the Hatred Is,” from his album Pieces of a Man (1971). It was also included on his compilation album, The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (1974). All these releases were issued on the Flying Dutchman Productions record label. In 2010, the New Statesman listed it as one of the “Top 20 Political Songs”.[1]

Haley told a little white girl at her school that black girls rock. The little girl went home and told her mother, so the mother was upset about it and called the school to speak with the teacher. The teacher called my daughter and said Haley is not allowed to say black girls rock anymore. WTF? Now you know how I feel, but I want a second opinion. Is this so wrong that one has to receive a phone call from the teacher?
See, now I’m reading about Black History month on another blog. My view is that I wouldn’t lose any sleep over folks doing away with it. Who taught Haley that being black ROCKS? This is totally awesome. However, I can see the little white girl going home to her mama telling her this, and her mama of all people, thinks the sun rises and sets with being white.
The teacher has a responsibility to maintain oreder in the classroom. Did she give a reason as to why Haley can’t say Black girls ROCK? Does shethe teacher/and or the mother see racial elements in the comment? Is Haley not to express her pride in being black?
Haley has the right to say “BLACK GIRLS ROCK.” I’d ask for a meeting with the principal on this nonsense.
And like my daughter said, If Haley ahd said “HONKEYS SUCK,” there would be cause for a phone call to Haley’s mother. Haley expressed pride in her blackness, and the white girl and white mama are threatened by this.
She’s a child. How are you going to tell a little black girl that she can’t say Black girls rock. Is the teacher telling Haley she can’t say it in school at all or just not to other white children?
This needs to be cleared up ASAP!

In gay rights victory, Obama administration won’t defend Defense of Marriage Act

The Obama administration announced Wednesday that it will no longer defend the constitutionality of the federal government’s ban on recognizing same-sex marriages, a rare legal reversal and the latest in a series of political victories for gay rights activists.
The Justice Department had appealed the decision of a federal judge in Massachusetts who struck down the Defense of Marriage Act in July, saying it was obligated to defend federal statutes. The 1996 law defines marriage from the federal perspective as between a man and a woman, which means same-sex married couples are denied access to marriage-based federal benefits.
In an extraordinary change, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. said Wednesday that he and President Obama had determined – after an extensive review – that the law’s key section is unconstitutional. “Given that conclusion, the President has instructed the Department not to defend the statute” in court, Holder said in a statement.

The American agenda is the 'black agenda'

The Post-Kaiser Family Foundation-Harvard University poll on race and recession that ran in Sunday's paper ought to put to rest the unreasonable and politically naive demand by some African Americans that President Obama have an articulated "Black agenda." As if health-care reform, consumer protection legislation, Stimulus I and II, Race to the Top, a reinvigorated civil rights division at Justice aren't a few of the measures and steps taken by the president to help all Americans that will also disproportionately help people of color. Everyday black folks get that, which explains in part why they are more optimistic than most about their economic future. Some of the folks who claim to speak for them? Not so much.
Question 40 in the poll asks: "When it comes to looking out for the economic interests of (INSERT), do you think that the Obama administration is doing too much, too little or about the right amount?" When the insert is filled by "you and your family," 67 percent of blacks responded "about the right amount." Fill the insert with "African Americans" and 63 percent of blacks respond "about the right amount."
This is exactly the way it should be. As I wrote in June, Obama has governed the way a president should govern: without fear or favor of one race over another. That blacks feel he is doing right by them is simply icing on the cake.

GOP official names black cow Oprah
A Republican leader on the Eastern Shore has angered some members of her party by having a black Angus cow named Oprah.
Diana Waterman, the newly elected First Vice Chairman of the Maryland Republican Party noted on Facebook that the family cow, Oprah, recently birthed a calf. (She joked that the newborn would not be called “Veal.”)
The post caught the attention of Sveinn C. Storm, who runs a Queen Anne’s County-focused blog called “Pave Our County?” The blog mostly focuses on development related issues.
Naming a cow after an African-American talk show host who has struggled with her weight is “precisely why an enormous number of Americans view Republicans as racists,” Storm wrote. He identifies himself as a Republican.
We emailed Waterman, and she had a different take. The family owns three adult cows: Oprah, Ferdinand and Isabella.
She said the black Angus was named by her children “after a famous person they admire.” The two others, also named by the children, honor the Spanish monarchs who approved Christopher Columbus’ trip to the New World.
“That’s all there is to it,” Waterman wrote.
The Maryland state party wasn’t impressed with the flap.
“With Maryland facing a record budget deficit, historic unemployment and a government that spends beyond its means – I’m not sure why we’re talking about cows when we could be addressing these real problems facing our state,” said Maryland GOP spokesman Ryan Mahoney.

Cellphone study shows one-hour exposure changes brain activity

Scientists at the National Institute of Health on Tuesday released a study that showed 50 minutes of cellphone use could alter the activity of the part of the brain closest to a cellphone antenna.
The findings, to be released Wednesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, comes amid headed debate on the health affects of mobile devices with San Francisco imposing first-ever labeling rules on radiation emissions. Burlingame, Calif. and Oregon are considering similar rules.
The study was led by Nora D. Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, who cautions that it is premature to draw “clinical significance” to the findings. That means it is too early to say the findings mean cellphones could lead to bodily harm, including brain cancer.
“The brain is very important and if you ask what my recommendation is from this study, I’d say I can’t overall say this is harmful but we have to study more for long-term effects,” Volkow said in an interview.
Specifically her research shows that those people exposed to 50 minutes of cellphone radio frequencies saw an increased brain glucose metabolism in the region closest to the antenna.
“The dramatic increase in use of cellular telephones has generated concern about possible negative effects of radiofrequency signals delivered to the brain,” JAMA wrote in background material on the study’s release. “However, whether acute cellphone exposure affects the human brain is unclear.”
Trade group CTIA-The Wireless Association has fought against local rules that would require labeling of radio-frequency levels at San Francisco retailers. The trade group filed a lawsuit against San Francisco and has sent lobbyists to Maine, California and Oregon to fight similar legilsations.
It has deferred to the Federal Communications Commission and Food and Drug Administrations as the expert agencies to oversee cellphone health. But public-interest groups say the regulatory agencies haven’t updated guidelines on cellphone health in more than one decade. And the rapid adoption of cellphones — 290 million in the U.S. — call for greater protections, particularly among children who have thinner skulls and ears than adult cellphone users.
Volkow’s study was conducted between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009 and included 47 participants.
The researchers found that metabolism in the brain region closest to the antenna was 7 percent higher when exposed to cellphone use.
“These results provide evidence that the human brain is sensitive to the effects of RF-EMFs from acute cell phone exposures,” the researchers write.
But they are quick to note: “Results of this study provide evidence that acute cell phone exposure affects brain metabolic activity. However, these results provide no information as to their relevance regarding potential carcinogenic effects (or lack of such effects) from chronic cell phone use.”
And the authors encouraged further study.
Louis Slesin, editor of Microwave News, said the study will lead to more questions about the effects low-frequency radiation can have on body tissue. Studies so far have been inconclusive but many researchers have warned about potentially harmful affects on long-term users and youth.
“Whether these short-term changes will lead to health consequences (and what they might be) is far from clear — though Volkow already has preliminary indications of a long-term effect,” Slesin wrote. “Importantly, this new finding upsets the current orthodoxy because
such low-levels EMF effects are thought to be impossible.”

Indiana Official: “Use Live Ammunition” Against Wisconsin Protesters

On Saturday night, when Mother Jones staffers tweeted a report that riot police might soon sweep demonstrators out of the Wisconsin capitol building—something that didn’t end up happening—one Twitter user sent out a chilling public response: “Use live ammunition.”
From my own Twitter account, I confronted the user, JCCentCom. He tweeted back that the demonstrators were “political enemies” and “thugs” who were “physically threatening legally elected officials.” In response to such behavior, he said, “You’re damned right I advocate deadly force.” He later called me a “typical leftist,” adding, “liberals hate police.”
Only later did we realize that JCCentCom was a deputy attorney general for the state of Indiana.

Rahm Emanuel elected Chicago mayor, avoids April runoff with majority of vote

CHICAGO – Former Obama White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel (D) was elected mayor of Chicago on Tuesday, surpassing 50 percent in a six-candidate field and thereby avoiding an April 5 runoff.
His sweeping win in a city whose politics have so often been defined by its racial, ethnic and economic schisms is “a victory for all those who believe we can overcome the old divisions and the old ways that have held Chicago back,” Emanuel declared in his victory speech at a union hall on the city’s near west side.
Emanuel will replace Richard M. Daley (D), who is retiring after 22 years. Tuesday’s election was the first in 64 years that an incumbent’s name wasn’t on the ballot.
Those facts alone were supposed to have made this the most wide-open mayoral race in more than half a century. But Emanuel cruised to victory, gathering more than double the vote of his next-closest rival, Gery Chico, a former chief of staff to Daley.
