Libyans in the besieged city of Misrata are suffering a host of horrors at the hands of forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi, including beatings, rapes, summary executions and worsening food and medicine shortages, a spokesman for the opposition said Tuesday.
More than 1,000 people have been killed or are presumed dead in Misrata since the conflict began in early February, and another 100 are listed as missing, said the spokesman, who spoke on condition that he not be identified.
“The security situation remains grave, especially in particular areas where Gadhafi’s forces are still present — whether in the form of heavy artillery tanks on the ground or in the form of groups of snipers positioned alongside some of the areas … very close to the city or in the suburbs,” he told msnbc.com via Skype from Libya’s third largest city.
Opposition fighters managed to repel an advance by Gadhafi forces from the east on Saturday, with the help of bombardments from coalition aircraft. But part of a food supply depot at the city’s port went up in flames. Though residents are grateful for the coalition’s help, they wanted to know why it did not act sooner.

Gaddafi Tells Greece Libya Wants Fighting To End

TRIPOLI (Reuters) – A Libyan minister told Greece’s prime minister on Sunday that Tripoli wanted fighting to end, while a Turkish ship evacuated wounded from the besieged city of Misrata, leaving thousands more pleading to be rescued.
With rebels and Gaddafi forces seemingly at a stalemate in eastern Libya and civilians trapped by fighting in the west, diplomatic efforts have intensified to seek an end to the war.
Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Abdelati Obeidi flew to Athens to convey a message from Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.
Obeidi told Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou that Libya wanted the fighting to end, a Greek government official told Reuters.
“It seems that the Libyan authorities are seeking a solution,” Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas told reporters. He said Obeidi planned to travel on to Malta and Turkey.
Greece has enjoyed good relations with Gaddafi for a number of years. Papandreou has been talking by phone with officials in Tripoli as well as the leaders of Qatar, Turkey and Britain over the last two days.

Rebels call for continued allied attacks against rapidly advancing Gaddafi forces following “unfortunate mistake.”
BREGA, Libya – A Western coalition air strike hit a group of rebels on the eastern outskirts of Brega late on Friday, killing at least 10 of them, rebel fighters at the scene said on Saturday.
The rebel leadership described the deaths as an unfortunate mistake and called for continued air strikes against Gaddafi’s forces, who thrust east out of Brega on Saturday using rockets and machineguns.
Their rapid advance sent hundreds of anti-government fighters fleeing back down the coast road, erasing two days of rebel gains.
Better-trained and experienced rebel fighters had earlier been fighting Gaddafi’s forces inside Brega, but it was unclear whether they had held their ground or pulled back into the desert. Most journalists moved back east with the rebels.

Ghadaffi, I believe, Was a revolutionary. His intentions (again, My belief) while built on anger from US intervention, were nationalistic and for the good of his people. Like many that came before him, He was seduced by the hard work of the CIA to undercut his original goals. When You look at his Neighbors, You will see a progressive agenda stunted by the influence for American Interests. However these concessions lead to corruption. After a while his base eroded away, and left him vulnerable. The State Department saw their chance and took it. Their is more at stake here than one Country’s Sovereignty. But if Qaddafi killed 259 people in the plane, USA supported financially and logistically military governments in Latin America to killed more than 60,000 people who just wanted to live in a democratic society. CIA and FBI collected information of dissidents from those countries and gave it to military governments so they can tracked them down and disappeared them. Now, why USA supports anti-democratic governments in one part of the world and saying that they want to bring democracy in the Middle East? BENGHAZI, Libya — Rebels battling the regime of Moammar Gaddafi would accept a cease-fire if government forces pull out of cities they are besieging and allow peaceful protests, the head of the opposition’s interim government said Friday.
“We are seeking immediate withdrawal of Gaddafi forces around and inside cities, to give Libyan people the freedom to choose,” said Mustafa Abdel Jalil, chairman of the rebels’ Transitional National Council.
“Our main aim is to remove the siege from the cities,” he said.
Abdel Jalil, who formerly served as Gaddafi’s justice minister before defecting last month amid a popular uprising, stressed that the rebels remain steadfast in their demand that Gaddafi and his family leave power. And he said the rebels would need weapons deliveries if the more heavily armed and better organized government forces keep fighting.
In a joint news conference with U.N. special envoy Abdul-Illah Khatib, a former Jordanian foreign minister, Abdel Jalil said: “We have no objection to a cease-fire but on condition that Libyans in western cities have full freedom in expressing their views.” He said that if the inhabitants of the besieged cities are allowed to express themselves, “the world will see that they will choose freedom.”

March 31, 2011 (CHICAGO) (WLS) — Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan is coming to the defense of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. Thursday, in Chicago, Minister Farrakhan blasted the United States’ intervention in Libya and predicted that it will lead to catastrophic consequences for the U.S.
It was a rare news conference for Nation of Islam leader Farrakhan, who spoke in defense of his old friend and benefactor Moammar Gadhafi. He warned President Barack Obama, the U.S. government and its allies to pay close attention to his words that were transmitted by satellite Thursday around the world.
“You’re dealing with a man that you’re gonna have to deal with,” said Farrakhan. “And you can’t deal with me the way you deal with your customary negroes.”

Minister Farrakhan, in the style of a prophet, predicted that the United States would be punished by God for its intervention in Libya.
“A major earthquake is on its way to you and me and us,” he said.
Farrakhan, who has known the Libyan leader since the 1980s, was criticized for traveling to Libya in 1997. He says Gadhafi has given or loaned the Nation of Islam millions of dollars, including money to help buy the former South Side Greek orthodox church that is now the group’s headquarters mosque, as well as investments in other Nation of Islam real estate and business ventures.
“What kind of brother would I be if a man who has been that way to me and to us, and when he is in trouble I refused to raise my voice in his defense?” said Farrakhan.
In his 90-minute statement, Farrakhan blamed Zionists for directing U.S. policy in the Mideast and trying to force a wedge between himself and President Obama.
“You don’t have no black man in America that has an argument with the Jews but Farrakhan. Well, who in the Bible has the biggest argument with the Jews of that day? Was it not Jesus?” said Farrakhan.
The Anti-Defamation League was outraged by the minister’s remarks, e-mailing a statement that said, “(Thursday’s speech) further demonstrates how far outside of the mainstream Farrakhan really is.”
The minister also took issue with State Department and media characterizations of Gadhafi.
“He’s not the mad dog of the Middle East,” Farrakhan said. “The mad dogs are biting and growling in Washington, D.C.”
The news conference was attended by several hundred people who interrupted Minister Farrakahn with applause several times during the speech.
Farrakhan was not as critical of President Obama as expected, but he certainly appeared to dial up the anti-Jewish rhetoric.

There are unconfirmed reports that more people have left the inner circle of Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, following the high level desertion of Moussa Koussa, Libya”s foreign minister, who arrived in the UK on Wednesday.
It is understood a group of top officials who had headed to Tunisia for talks have decided to stay there.
Some Arabic newspapers said Mohammad Abu Al Qassim Al Zawi, the head of Libya”s Popular Committee, the country’s equivalent of a parliament, is among the defectors.
Nazanine Moshiri, Al Jazeera”s correspondent in Tunis, said that Abu Zayed Dordah, Libya”s prime minister from 1990 to 1994, has also been mentioned.
On Thursday, a second top official confirmed that he would not serve in Gaddfai”s regime.
Ali Abdessalam Treki, a former foreign minister and UN general assembly president, had been named to represent Libya at the UN after a wave of defections early in the uprising.
Treki, who is currently in Cairo, said in a statement posted on several opposition websites that he was
not going to accept that job or any other.
“We should not let our country fall into an unknown fate,” he said. “It is our nation”s right to live in freedom, democracy and a good life.”
”Crumbling from within”
William Hague, Britain”s foreign minister, said that Koussa had not been offered immunity from prosecution and is “voluntarily talking” to authorities.
Koussa was staying in a safe and secure place and engaged in ongoing discussions with British diplomats, including some who worked at the now-shuttered embassy in Libya, Hague said.
“His [Koussa”s] resignation shows that [Muammar] Gaddafi”s regime … is fragmented, under pressure and crumbling from within,” he said.
Hague said Koussa had been his contact with the regime in recent weeks and that he had spoken with him several times.
“One thing I gathered between the lines of my telephone calls … was that he was very distressed and dissatisfied” by the regime”s response to protests, Hague said.
Hague said the British government encouraged others around Gaddafi to abandon him and “embrace a better future for Libya.”
A Libyan government spokesman confirmed on Thursday that Koussa had resigned but said that Gaddafi still enjoyed the support of his people.
Moussa Ibrahim said that Koussa”s decision was personal and “other people will step in and do the job”.
Ibrahim said Koussa had been given permission to go to Tunisia because he was sick with diabetes and high blood pressure.
He said the goverment did not know he would go to London.
”Tight security”
Many Libyan government figures have resigned since the uprising against Gaddafi began on February 15.
Interior minister Abdel Fattah Younis and justice minister Mustafa Mohamed al-Jalil have both left, as have numerous ambassadors around the world.
Most high-level Libyan officials are trying to defect but are under tight security and having difficulty leaving the country, a top Libyan diplomat now supporting the opposition said on Thursday.
Ibrahim Dabbashi, Libya”s deputy UN ambassador, said that Libya”s UN mission, which now totally supports the opposition, knew two days in advance that Koussa planned to defect on Wednesday.
He said the mission had been waiting for about 10 days for Thursday”s defection of Ali Abdessalam Treki, a former foreign minister selected by Gaddafi to be the new UN ambassador.
“We know that most of the high Libyan officials are trying to defect, but most of them are under tight security measures and they cannot leave the country,” said Dabbashi.
“But we are sure that many of them will benefit from the first chance to be out of the country and to defect.
“I don”t think it is easy. But anyway, who has the will, he will find the way.””
”Status reviewed”
Before Koussa”s defection, the Nicaraguan government said he sent a letter appointing Miguel D”Escoto Brockmann, a former priest who served as Nicaragua”s first foreign minister after the 1979 Sandinista revolution, as Libya”s new UN ambassador.
A news conference with D”Escoto, scheduled by Nicaragua”s UN mission, was postponed from Thursday to Friday and then postponed again, with no future date announced.
The mission gave no explanation for the delays.
Farhan Haq, a UN spokesman, said the UN had not officially received any letter from Libya regarding a change of credentials involving D”Escoto.
He said the UN did receive a copy of a note from Nicaragua addressed to all UN missions which attached a copy of Koussa”s letter to the secretary-general, but he stressed that the UN had never received that letter.
Susan Rice, the US ambassador to the UN, said on Wednesday that D”Escoto needed a G-1 visa, the US visa required for diplomatic representation, if he wants to represent Libya.
If he tries to do so on the tourist visa he now holds, she warned, “he will soon have his visa status reviewed”.
Although D”Escoto was born in Los Angeles, California, and once held dual citizenship, Rice said he has renounced his US citizenship.
Lockerbie questions
Scottish authorities said on Thursday that they wished to interview Koussa over the 1988 Lockerbie bombing.
“We have notified the Foreign and Commonwealth Office that the Scottish prosecuting and investigating authorities wish to interview Mr Koussa in connection with the Lockerbie bombing,” Scotland”s crown office said in a statement.
“The investigation into the Lockerbie bombing remains open and we will pursue all relevant lines of inquiry.”
The bombing over the Scottish town in 1988 killed 259 people, mostly Americans, on the plane and 11 on the ground.
Last month, Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the former Libyan justice minister and leader of the rebel”s interim national council, said that Gaddafi ordered intelligence officers, including the convicted bomber Abdel Baset al Megrahi, to carry out the bombing.
Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was among those killed, said Koussa”s arrival in Britain was an opportunity to finally shed some light on the bombing.
“Koussa was at the centre of Gaddafi”s inner circle. This is a guy who knows everything,” he said.
“I think this is a fantastic day for those who seek the truth about Lockerbie. He could tell us everything the Gaddafi regime knows.”

CHICAGO (AP) – Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan reiterated his defense of Moammar Gadhafi on Thursday, calling the embattled Libyan leader a friend and Muslim brother who’s lent the movement $8 million over the years.
Farrakhan, speaking at a rare news conference, railed against the media and said Gadhafi isn’t the monster being portrayed by Western governments.
The 78-year-old minister criticized the U.S. government and President Barack Obama – whom he also called a brother – for launching military action against Libya without justification. He accused Americans of just wanting Gadhafi out of the picture to secure oil interests.
“I love Moammar Gadhafi, and I love our president,” Farrakhan told several hundred cheering supporters at the Nation of Islam’s headquarters. “It grieves me to see my brother president set a policy that would remove this man not only from power, but from the earth.”
Obama has defended America’s military involvement in Libya, saying the U.S. has intervened to prevent a slaughter of civilians. He has ruled out targeting Gadhafi militarily, and the U.S. turned over control of the military operation to NATO on Thursday. Gadhafi, who has ruled Libya for decades, has been battling opposition forces.
Farrakhan portrayed Gadhafi as a fellow revolutionary and longtime friend to the Nation of Islam, which used $3 million it borrowed from Libya in the 1970s to acquire its opulent headquarters on Chicago’s South Side. Years later, a $5 million loan was used to pay back taxes and costs for the home of the movement’s former leader Elijah Muhammad.
Farrakhan has publicly defended Gadhafi at several recent events, including the Nation of Islam’s annual Saviours’ Day convention in February and at a civil rights convention last week. He said the U.S. government shouldn’t be attacking Libya when it has stayed out of other conflicts around the world.
He called for a cease-fire on both sides in Libya and a chance for the Libyan people to vote on whether Gadhafi should stay in power. He dismissed allegations that Gadhafi has violently cracked down on his own people, saying the Libyan leader was “killing traitors.”
“Do you really think that Brother Gadhafi really was going to slaughter 700,000 people?” Farrakhan said. “If that were true … where are all the bodies?”
“I don’t care what Gadhafi has done wrong, he is not the ‘mad dog of the Middle East,'” he said, a reference to the label former President Ronald Reagan once gave Gadhafi.
Farrakhan said he originally called the news conference to warn the country about a huge earthquake that he’s foreseen, cautioning that Americans “are worse prepared than the Japanese,” who are trying to recover from a devastating earthquake and tsunami that touched off a nuclear crisis.

Colonel Gaddafi’s regime has sent one of its most trusted envoys to London for confidential talks with British officials, the Guardian can reveal.
Mohammed Ismail, a senior aide to Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam, visited London in recent days, British government sources familiar with the meeting have confirmed.
The contacts with Ismail are believed to have been one of a number between Libyan officials and the west in the last fortnight, amid signs that the regime may be looking for an exit strategy.
Disclosure of Ismail’s visit comes in the immediate aftermath of the defection to Britain of Moussa Koussa, Libya’s foreign minister and the country’s former external intelligence head, who has been Britain’s main conduit to the Gaddafi regime since the early 1990s.
A team led by the British ambassador to Libya, Richard Northern, and MI6 officers, embarked on a lengthy debriefing of Koussa at a safe house after he flew into Farnborough airport on Wednesday night from Tunisia. Government sources said the questioning would take time because Koussa’s state of mind was “delicate” after he left his family in Libya. The Foreign Office declined “to provide a running commentary” on contacts with Ismail or other regime officials. But news of the meeting comes amid mounting speculation that Gaddafi’s sons, foremost among them Saif al-Islam, Saadi and Mutassim, are anxious to explore a way out of the crisis in Libya.
