Catherine Ferguson Academy to stay open as a charter school

DETROIT (WXYZ) – A school in Detroit that’s on the hit list to get closed is getting the attention of the UAW and a famous Hollywood actor.
Some students say the Catherine Ferguson Academy changed their lives.
Holding signs and chanting together, a large crowd gathered outside the Academy Thursday. For many teenage moms, the school has been a home away from home.
One student says, “If we have problems at home, we have people to talk to, and the teachers are actually teaching us something to help us in the future. They have C. N. A. classes and people get jobs. It’s just a very helpful school for everybody.”
The rally was scheduled when the protesters thought that the school would closed, but things took a turn from a protest to a victory celebration after the crowd got word the school would remain open.
At a press conference, the Detroit Public Schools’ Emergency Manager made the announcement it will become a charter school.
The featured speaker was actor Danny Glover, the vitality of public schools a big issue for him.
He says, “The question is how do we now bridge that, create the bridge? Create the bridge that we talk about education as a right, not an entitlement, a right, not entitled to a few people, a right. Because where do we go from here?”
Many of the people we spoke to protesting said they see the school staying open as a minor victory. They’d like to see it stay public and not turn into a charter school.

Is this legal????????? These SOBs should be prosecuted and thrown into jail.
Any city that has some outside appointee try to take over the finances and impose themselves on the Citys jurisdiction should have the creeps arrested for fraud. They should also get an injunction to prevent further hastles until the courts deside if it is legal. Any tax payer or voter in these citys could file suit right now.
All Citys in the State of Michigan should immediately write laws against this nonsense and enforce them aggressively.
It is pretty obvious that what is going on in Benton Harbor is a realestate grab by a politically connected company, can you say organized crime?
this is unreal. what kind of excuse does a mofo have that would allow him to close a school where 90 percent of the students graduate – IN DETROIT?

On Monday, I’m calling mayor David Bing, the CBC, and rep. John Conyers and ask them what they are doing about this mess. I’m also contacting the NAACP and Ben Jealous. I’ve tried tweeting them but they are ignoring their accounts.
