Edwin Hawkins (born 18 August 1943, Oakland, California) is a Grammy Award-winning American gospel and R&B musician, pianist, choir master, composer and arranger. He is one of the originators of the urban contemporary gospel sound. He (and the Edwin Hawkins Singers) are best known for his arrangement of “Oh Happy Day” (1968–69), which was included on the Songs of the Century list. The Edwin Hawkins Singers made a second foray into the charts a year later, backing folk singer Melanie on “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)“.
At the age of seven Hawkins was already the keyboardist to accompany the family’s gospel choir. Together with Betty Watson, he was the co-founder of the Northern California State Youth Choir of the Church of God in Christ, which included almost 50 members.[1] This ensemble recorded its first album Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord at the Ephesian Church of God in Christ in Berkeley, California, hoping to sell 500 copies. “Oh Happy Day” was just one of the eight songs on the album.

I don’t know whether Avent was really surprised by this — if so, he hasn’t been paying attention. 1930-vintage macro has been all the rage in GOP circles for a while now.
But not, actually, for all that long. Here’s a snip from the table of contents for the 2004 Economic Report of the President:

Aggressive monetary policy is good? What would Ron Paul say? And the bit about tax cuts, although it makes a deferential nod to supply side dogma, is mainly a more or less straight Keynesian argument for increasing aggregate demand.
To be sure, this is Greg Mankiw writing; but still, look at what he was allowed to say.
I’ve been writing for a couple of years about the academic descent into a Dark Age of macroeconomics, in which much of the profession has forgotten things they used to know. But that has been a gradual process. The GOP descent into the intellectual abyss, by contrast, has been stunningly swift.
Some of this is just partisanship: wanna bet that, say, John Taylor would be a lot more sympathetic to expansionary policies if his party held the White House? But the truth — which I suspect that people like Greg aren’t willing to face, yet — is that the intellectual barbarians have completely overrun a party that even a few years ago was still capable of making sense.

First lady Michelle Obama used her commencement address at the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday to commend America’s troops, particularly those involved in last week’s raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan. Here is an excerpt:
“We’ve all seen, just in the last week, how much these folks deserve our support. Just imagine, a small group of brave men, dropped by helicopter, half a world away in the dead of night … into unknown danger inside the lair of the most sought after man in the world. They did not hesitate, risking everything for us, for our freedom and security. And they did it not just as Navy SEALs. They did it as husbands, as fathers, as sons. Their families were back here, with no idea of their mission or whether their loved one would ever come home. That is the very essence of the word ‘service.’ And the least we can do is give something back to these troops and their families who have given us so much.” According to the Associated Press, the speech was her first in Iowa since the 2008 election season.

Majority agree with Obama decision on bin Laden photos: poll

CHICAGO (Reuters) – Nearly two-thirds of Americans agree with President Barack Obama’s decision not to release graphic photos of the dead al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, according to an NBC poll to be released on Monday.
Obama said in a television interview this week that he opted against releasing post-mortem photos of bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11 attacks, because it could incite violence and be used as an al Qaeda propaganda tool.
The NBC poll found 24 percent of respondents strongly believed the photos should be released, and 52 percent strongly believed they should not be released.
Another 12 percent said they agreed with the president, although not as strongly.
NBC said the poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
Obama said the photos would do little to assuage those who question whether bin Laden was killed in the U.S. raid on his Pakistani compound on May 2.
“We’ve done DNA sampling and testing, and so there was no doubt we had killed Osama bin Laden,” Obama told CBS’ “60 Minutes” program, according to an excerpt released by the White House. “The fact is you will not see bin Laden walking on this earth again.”
Al Qaeda confirmed bin Laden’s death in an Internet message on May 6 and vowed not to abandon armed struggle.

Meghan McCain Takes Rachel Maddow To An NRA Convention

No one can ever accuse Rachel Maddow of not going out of her element to get a story. This week, Maddow made good on a promise she had made Meghan McCain to accompany her to an NRA convention, where the ideologically disparate duo found they had more in common over gun control laws than they initially thought.
Maddow admitted at the beginning of the program that, despite being a proponent of banning certain high-capacity weaponry, she was not at all opposed to the Second Amendment and shot guns herself from time to time. That said, she found herself a bit discomforted by what she described as McCain’s “Second Amendment enthusiasm.” “A lot of people think that I’m sort of, like, a fake Republican,” McCain retorted, but her passion for the Second Amendment was “when I get, like, really conservative.” That she attributes to among other things, being a single woman living alone and feeling safer around guns as well as a more philosophical belief that the good should not be punished with gun laws just in case. McCain did support gun laws banning high capacity magazines from being sold, though, and added the she wasn’t alone in that assessment– former Vice President Dick Cheney thought so, too. Given that agreement, Maddow wondered why many NRA members did not feel the same.
“A lot of members are ok with it,” McCain argued, but added that the major concern among members is “Where does it end? It’s an ‘if you give an inch they’ll take a mile’ mentality.” If many members agreed that some restrictions should apply, Maddow then asked, why have the NRA advocate the opposite opinion? Maddow noted that two of the organization’s members actually manufactured high-capacity magazines, which was “exhausting” to her, as the material interests got in the way of the due-paying members’ opinions. “Is there anything you like about the NRA?” McCain asked, some what frustrated with this particular impasse. “I like the gun safety stuff that they do,” Maddow admitted, and also cited some of their symbolism in pamphlet literature.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, followed up her smash-mouth Lawrence O’Donnell interview with a more cordial appearance on Sunday morning’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, and while she was far more gracious than former Bush Chief of Staff Andy Card (who accused President Obama of “pound(ing) his chest” over the Osama bin Laden slaying), she did repeatedly make it clear that people needed to know that Bush and co. loosened the jar on the bin Laden raid.
To her credit, Rice did credit President Obama for making “a brave decision,” and offered her congratulations.
However, in the brief interview, four of Ms. Rice’s seven responses involved the Bush administration’s share of credit for the measure of justice which was served to the terrorist leader, plus another (rightly) lauding Bush for his iconic remarks at Ground Zero on Sept. 15, 2001.
By contrast, she mentioned President Obama three times, most interestingly in her final response, which seemed to suggest Obama was just mopping up. Lauding Bush for the “very, very hard calls that frankly helped to set this up,” she allowed that “President Obama had to make some very difficult calls to bring it to conclusion.”
It is certainly in poor taste to leap upon the somewhat redemptive moment of Osama bin Laden’s death as an excuse to beat up on the Bush administration, and perhaps in Rice’s case, this is a defensive reaction, but it takes a certain amount of nerve to bang the “me, too” drum this hard. While the precise order and manner in which the dots were connected is still not known, and may never be, the Bush administration oversaw bin Laden’s preventable escape from Tora Bora, and for whatever reason, the trail grew cold enough under their watch that they shuttered the CIA’s bin Laden unit for several years.
By contrast, the raid on bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan was the fulfillment of a very early campaign promise, one for which he was roundly attacked, an indication that, had he not been elected, a different president might not have made this call. President Obama has also implemented a campaign of counter-terror that has actually seen him take flack from a former Bush adviser for killing too many terrorists.
As for the President “pounding his chest,” even Card admits it’s really nothing the President has said, or any of his costumes/banners,or even anything he’s done:
I thought his statement was subdued, but I think his schedule is not subdued. Personally, I think it is premature to go to Ground Zero, in New York.

WASHINGTON — U.S. officials will mine the secrets of Osama bin Laden by poring over an intelligence haul seized at the time of his death that a top White House aide describes as a wealth of intelligence about al-Qaida.

Cavuto and His Panel Accuse Democrats of Using Scare Tactics to Frighten Seniors on Medicare Cuts in Ryan’s Budget

Fox’s Neil Cavuto and his weekend show panel were terribly upset that HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that seniors may die sooner under Rep. Paul Ryan and the GOP’s budget plan during testimony before the House Education and the Workforce Committee this week.
Apparently their vote for Ryan’s budget has got a lot of Republicans on edge and as Steve Benen noted, some of them are using the same talking points as the Fox pundits did here.
When Rep. Chris Lee (R) resigned in disgrace in February, few expected his seat to change party hands. His Buffalo-area district has been represented by Republicans for a long while, and national Democrats didn’t expect the special election to replace Lee to be competitive at all.
In March, the New York GOP rallied behind Jane Corwin, a well-liked state assemblywoman, and the race in the 26th congressional district appeared to be largely over.
And then a Siena College poll was published, showing Corwin’s lead at just five points over Democrat Kathy Hochul. What happened?
Part of the competitiveness is the result of Jack Davis, an odd millionaire, running as an independent and splitting the right. And the other part is Paul Ryan’s House Republican budget plan. […]
At this point, the best the Republican campaign can come up with is the charge that Democrats “are trying to scare seniors.” But that’s awfully weak — it’s not demagoguery if it’s true, and if accurate descriptions of the GOP plan end up scaring people, that’s certainly not Democrats’ fault.
During this segment on Cavuto’s show they were a bit long on fearmongering themselves and short on just what the details of Ryan’s plan are, even though all of them continually maintained that the people attacking it don’t know what’s in it and need to go read it. And Steve is exactly right on the “scare tactic” talking point; that’s a terribly weak argument. Seniors are afraid and upset because once they get a look at the GOP’s budget plan and the details, they don’t like it, not because they don’t realize fully what it means for Medicare – privatizing it.
Of course the panel here just repeated the tired talking point that Medicare needs to be and handed over to the private insurance industry in order to “save it.”

Dalai Lama to speak at University of Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS—The Dalai Lama speaks at the University of Minnesota on Sunday on the theme of achieving “Peace Through Inner Peace.”
The Tibetan Buddhist leader will attend two public events at Mariucci (mair-ee-OO’-chee) Arena hosted by the university’s Center for Spirituality and Healing.
The center’s director and founder, Mary Jo Kreitzer, points out that he’ll appear 10 years to the day since his last visit to campus, when he spoke about compassion and individual responsibility in the 21st century.
He’ll appear Sunday morning at a Tibetan cultural and spiritual ceremony promoting personal and societal healing. He’ll deliver his main address Sunday afternoon.
The Dalai Lama arrived in Minnesota on Friday, when he was greeted by a large crowd of Tibetans outside the official residence of the presidents of the University of Minnesota.

He made the comments Saturday in Minneapolis during one of many appearances around the Twin Cities this weekend.
There are approximately 3,000 Tibetans living in Minnesota.
The Dalai Lama spoke to a number of them at a celebration at the University of Saint Thomas in Saint Paul on Saturday morning.
For Tibetan Buddhists like Sonam Doma, who has been living in Minnesota for 18 years, it’s a time of great joy. She said, “For us it’s everything he is our god and he is our leader.”
But it wasn’t just Tibetans who wanted to meet His Holiness.

Ametia, I really don’t believe they’re OBL sympathizers…not in the true sense. I do think they will use any excuse to criticize the POTUS and divert the public’s attention from the fact that they’ve been wrong in their “assumptions” about him. Probably nervous that more people will actually take a second look at who President Obama is and what he’s accomplished during his time in office. (This is why we should be busy spreading information far and wide.)
Some people are finally realizing what the Republican agenda is all about; others not so much. Whether the “newly enlightened” will vote for him in the upcoming elections is anyone’s guess–but we can make sure that they fully realize what they’re supporting, and what they’ll get, if they vote for Republicans. And they’ve given us plenty of material to work with!

“Casswell, a Republican representing Branch, Hillsdale, Lenawee and St. Joseph counties, made the proposal this week, reports Michigan Public Radio.”
“His explanation? I never had anything new,’ Caswell says. ‘I got all the hand-me-downs. And my dad, he did a lot of shopping at the Salvation Army, and his comment was — and quite frankly it’s true — once you’re out of the store and you walk down the street, nobody knows where you bought your clothes.'”
“Under his plan, foster children would receive gift cards that could only be used at places like the Salvation Army, Goodwill and other second hand clothing stores.”
“The plan was knocked by the Michigan League for Human Services. Gilda Jacobs, executive director of the group, had this to say:

Killing Evil Doesn’t Make Us Evil

I don’t want closure. There is no closure after tragedy.
I want memory, and justice, and revenge.
When you’re dealing with a mass murderer who bragged about incinerating thousands of Americans and planned to kill countless more, that seems like the only civilized and morally sound response.
We briefly celebrated one of the few clear-cut military victories we’ve had in a long time, a win that made us feel like Americans again — smart and strong and capable of finding our enemies and striking back at them without getting trapped in multitrillion-dollar Groundhog Day occupations.
But within days, Naval Seal-gazing shifted to navel-gazing.
There was the bad comedy of solipsistic Republicans with wounded egos trying to make it about how right they were and whinging that George W. Bush was due more credit. Their attempt to renew the debate about torture is itself torture.
W. preferred to sulk in his Dallas tent rather than join President Obama at ground zero in a duet that would have certainly united the country.
Whereas the intelligence work that led to the destruction of Bin Laden was begun in the Bush administration, the cache of schemes taken from Osama’s Pakistan house debunked the fanciful narrative that the Bush crew pushed: that Osama was stuck in a cave unable to communicate, increasingly irrelevant and a mere symbol, rather than operational. Osama, in fact, was at the helm, spending his days whipping up bloody schemes to kill more Americans.
In another inane debate last week, many voices suggested that decapitating the head of a deadly terrorist network was some sort of injustice.
Taking offense after Ban Ki-moon, the United Nations secretary general, said he was “much relieved” at the news of Bin Laden’s death, Kenneth Roth, the executive director of Human Rights Watch, posted the Twitter message: “Ban Ki-moon wrong on Osama bin Laden: It’s not justice for him to be killed even if justified; no trial, conviction.”
I leave it to subtler minds to parse the distinction between what is just and what is justified.
When Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, said she was “glad” Bin Laden had been killed, a colleague called such talk “medieval.”
Christophe Barbier, editor of the centrist French weekly L’Express, warned: “To cry one’s joy in the streets of our cities is to ape the turbaned barbarians who danced the night of Sept. 11.”
Those who celebrated on Sept. 11 were applauding the slaughter of American innocents. When college kids spontaneously streamed out Sunday night to the White House, ground zero and elsewhere, they were the opposite of bloodthirsty: they were happy that one of the most certifiably evil figures of our time was no more.
The confused image of Bin Laden as a victim was exacerbated by John Brennan, the Obama national security aide who intemperately presented an inaccurate portrait of what had happened on the third floor in Abbottabad.
Unlike the president and the Navy Seals, who performed with steely finesse, Brennan was overwrought, exaggerating the narrative to demonize the demon.
The White House had to backtrack from Brennan’s contentions that Osama was “hiding behind women who were put in front of him as a shield” and that he died after resisting in a firefight.
It may be that some administration officials have taken Dick Cheney’s belittling so much to heart that they are still reluctant to display effortless macho. Liberal guilt may have its uses, but it should not be wasted on this kill-mission.
The really insane assumption behind some of the second-guessing is that killing Osama somehow makes us like Osama, as if all killing is the same.
Only fools or knaves would argue that we could fight Al Qaeda’s violence non-violently.
President Obama was prepared to take a life not only to avenge American lives already taken but to deter the same killer from taking any more. Aside from Bin Laden’s plotting, his survival and his legend were inspirations for more murder.
If stealth bombers had dropped dozens of 2,000-pound bombs and wiped out everyone, no one would have been debating whether Osama was armed. The president chose the riskiest option presented to him, but one that spared nearly all the women and children at the compound, and anyone in the vicinity.

Morally and operationally, this was counterterrorism at its finest.

CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS know what Bush stated about Osama Bin Laden. Bush was NOT concerned about Bin Laden because he wasn’t top priority on their list. But now that the black guy captured and killed him, they want to give credit to the white guy. What did Paul Mooney say?

The GOP’s only goal in life is to create bills to abolish any and everyone or anything that they cannot CONTROL.
Jobs?! Jobs?! They never had any intention of proposing any legislation pertaining to jobs. I doubt that they know how. That narrative was conveniently trotted out to amp up the frustration over the high unemployment rate.
Besides, if they were so interested in creating jobs, why didn’t they begin in 2007 when we started losing jobs in record numbers. If I recall, that was under their watch. So, two years later they’re having fainting spells over jobs–which they still haven’t managed to produce legislation for.
They should do everyone a favor, stop posturing and bloviating, and just admit that they don’t have a clue!

Kaine, Allen tied in 2012 Senate matchup, Post poll shows

George Allen and Timothy M. Kaine are locked in a dead heat 18 months from Election Day, according to a new Washington Post poll, suggesting that the U.S. Senate race between the Virginia titans may live up to its billing as one of the most competitive contests in the nation.
The candidates are tied at 46 percent among registered voters in the battle to succeed retiring Sen. James Webb (D). Neither Allen (R) nor Kaine (D) is guaranteed his party’s nomination, but the survey shows that both men enjoy huge leads over potential intraparty opponents.
The 2012 contest will play out in a state that has changed dramatically in recent years. Kaine — the former governor and Democratic National Committee chairman — draws strong support in portions of Northern Virginia, which has rapidly gained population, wealth and political clout. Allen, the ex-governor and senator, remains stronger in the rest of the state.

“During debate over Negron’s proposed language, Rich asked him if he would be willing to accept a way to insure that all women receiving Medicaid would be able to receive family planning services. She said her fears were that there might not be another plan for a woman to chose from that does offer the services. She also said an existing provider that does provide it might pull their services from the region. She cited an incident in her district, Broward County, in which seven HMOs pulled their services in the region.”
