Shirley Ann Caesar (born October 13, 1938, Durham, North Carolina) is an American Gospel music singer, songwriter and recording artist whose career has spanned six decades. A multi-award winning artist, with eleven Grammy Awards and seven Dove Awards to her credit, she is known as “First Lady of gospel”.
Beginning recording at the age of 13 in 1951,[1] Shirley Caesar has released over forty albums, exploring her gift and spreading messages of faith. She has participated in over 16 compilations and three gospel musicals, Mama I Want to Sing, Sing: Mama 2 and Born to Sing: Mama 3.

The second and third graders tore into the classroom at Harlem Success Academy 2 like a tornado of little arms and legs. A cacophony of giggles and squeals preceded them
Minutes later these little dervishes of energy were studious and silent, but for the click of chess pieces and the clack of the timers they popped after each move.
The tension was thick. The players were focused. The inaugural chess tournament of the Harlem Success Academy scholars was underway, and the competition was on.
“The thing I like about chess is having hard enemies, to see if I’m good or not,” said Abudurazaq Aribidesi, 8, a third grader at the school, after winning his second match of the day. The young player, who has bounced between being the top ranked and third ranked player in the entire school, could barely tamp down his pride as he nudged his glasses up on his nose.
“I feel really good,” Abudurazaq said (pictured below right), strolling confidently out of the classroom.
Held at Harlem Success Academy’s East 128th Street location in Harlem, the tournament was the first of its kind for the network of charter schools. But it is also part of a citywide surge in organized chess in public and charter schools in some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods, where schools, as cliché as it might sound, are using the game of chess to teach its students discipline and focus, traits best served in the game of life.
New York City has boasted an impressive pool of young talent that has garnered national attention, including Justus Williams of the Bronx, who at 12 became the youngest ever African American chess master last year and has been named “the Lebron James of chess.”

Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain joined the roundtable on This Week and discussed his own growing popularity as a contender for the Republican nomination while also commenting on Mitt Romney and Sarah Palin. After ABC’s Jonathan Karl described how Romney’s campaign announcement in New Hampshire was overshadowed by Palin and how Romney allowed his hair to get messed up, Cain started laughing and provided a few reasons why.
Christiane Amanpour was curious what sparked Cain’s laughter and he readily admitted it was partially because of Karl’s detailed reporting about Romney’s hair and explained:
“I was also laughing about the fact that yes Sarah has gained a lot of the headlines . . . and the other thing that I was amused about was – yes [Romney] had his announcement . . . and I contrast that to two weeks ago when I did my announcement and we attracted 15,000 people in the middle of the day.”
Cain suggested the enthusiasm from his supporters should start to silence conservative critics like Karl Rove who continue to dismiss him. About Rove and Charles Krauthammer, Cain argues:
“They are working off a traditional model of great name ID before you start out, whole lot of money, and you’ve held public office before. Well Herman Cain is just the reverse. But guess what’s happening? The American people aren’t looking at it from the traditional model standpoint.”
Amanpour seemed shocked that a successful candidate wouldn’t need money, to which Cain responded by showing off some of his personal charm and laughingly admitted “you need some!”

People are dancing in the streets of Sana, Yemen after their president Ali Abdullah Saleh fled to Saudi Arabia to seek treatment for “burns and scratches” he received when his mosque was hit by artillery-fire. The truth is probably more ominous. I think Mr. Saleh is more badly injured than he’s willing to let on.
In any case, it’s doubtful that the Saudis will ever let him return to Yemen even if he makes a full recovery. So, now things get very interesting.
The vice-president has taken over now, which comports with their Constitution. But the Yemeni protesters want democracy. They’re happy now, but after a few days they’ll want more progress. The Saudis want stability. They also want to stop this wave of political freedom and aspiration. But they hold the fate of Yemen in their hands. Will they allow democracy there, as the people demand? And can Yemen work as a country without a strongman at the top?
Will a vacuum of power turn Yemen into this decade’s Afghanistan and a lethal sanctuary for big-minded terrorists?
Who knows? I certainly don’t. As far as I am concerned, the Arab Spring won’t be complete until Gaddafi, Assad, and the whole Saudi Royal Family are driven out of power. The Sauds are responsible for their actions. They all belong in the Hague.

100+ and climbing, just an average June day in AZ but despite the heat the blackberry bushes we planted in January are thriving. They are a special variety created by Texas A&M to withstand heat and dry conditions. We were told not to expect any fruit this year but I think we will get a few berries anyway, enough for the Grandkiddos to pick and munch on.

Ah! the heat is on in Aquagranny’s neck-o-the-woods, When I was growning up on the farm, whe’d pick blackberries, they were plentiful, cheeries, apples, grapes. Mama would make us blackberry mush and can the other fruits, make preserves and can veggies. Good eats!
…My older sister still makes canned pickles, jellies and preserves.

Everyone has already had a grand old time mocking this video of Sarah Palin bungling her Paul Revere history, but I actually think it amounts to quite an eloquent statement. It’s as eloquent an argument as anyone could make that this woman really should not be treated by any of us as anything resembling a presidential candidate until it’s absolutely necessary — which is to say, until she actually runs for president.
And as such, it should be spread as widely as possible:
Palin said:
“He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms, uh, by ringin’ those bells and, um, makin’ sure as he’s ridin’ his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that, uh, we were gonna be secure and we were gonna be free.”
Come on, this is just crazy. Palin is not in this race, and even if she does run, most credible observers agree that she will be a weak candidate. Just imagine this kind of thing happening with regularity on the campaign trail. The GOP establishment doesn’t want her to run. If polls are to be believed, not even her own supporters want her to run. The other day, her camp actually leaked word that she would not be meeting with party leaders in key primary states in order to encourage a sense that she’s planning an unconventional presidential campaign! To put it mildly, that’s not exactly credible. The bus tour itself has no coherent rationale whatsoever. She launched it, transparently, after media interest in her had bottomed out. Palin is openly mocking reporters who are treating it as real news. Until she actually declares her candidacy, mark this whole thing down as a complete con job.
I’m with Justin Elliott on this: The sight of scores of reporters chasing after Palin’s shiny new bus is one of the most dispiriting media displays we’ve seen in a very long time. Even worse, it’s happening barely days after the political media got whipsawed badly by Donald Trump’s birther hucksterism!
Please make it stop. Spread this video far and wide.

WASHINGTON (AP/The Huffington Post) — Sarah Palin says she didn’t mess up her history on Paul Revere.
The potential 2012 presidential candidate was in Boston on Thursday as part of her bus tour when she was asked about the Revolutionary War hero.
Palin said Revere “warned the British that they weren’t gonna be takin’ away our arms.”
Palin, a paid Fox News contributor, told “Fox News Sunday” that she was correct. She says there were British soldiers in the area for years before Revere’s legendary ride, and that he was warning them, as well as his fellow colonists.
“Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there that ‘hey, you’re not going to take American arms, you are not going to beat our own well-armed persons individual private militia that we have.'”
She blamed her previous answer on the media, saying it was a “gotcha question.”

Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO and radio personality Herman Cain laid out policy positions and called for “common-sense solutions” in a keynote speech Saturday before a group of conservative activists.
Like the other presidential hopefuls who spoke at the two-day Faith and Freedom Coalition conference, Cain sought to underscore his conservative credentials, and he took on President Obama’s leadership.
“We have become a nation of crises,” he said. “And we have a severe deficiency of leadership crisis in the White House.”
Speaking to the largely evangelical crowd, Cain invoked Scripture from the beginning and related spiritual experiences when explaining what inspired him to run for the White House. He cited his desire to “make this world a better world” for his grandchildren, as well as his struggle with cancer five years ago.
When asked in a brief interview with The Hill if he considers himself a social or fiscal conservative candidate, he said that “those are just labels.” He cited his opposition to same-sex marriage and abortion and emphasized his business credentials, asserting that he was both.
Cain, who has never held elected office, addressed questions of his lack of foreign policy experience by claiming that Obama lacked those credentials, too.
