Chris Wallace Hits RNC Chair Priebus on Republicans Appearing to Protect the Wealthy

It appears Republican’s obstruction and their obvious interest in only looking out for the wealthiest in America has gotten so blatant that even Fox’s Chris Wallace is calling them out on it. Here he is on Fox News Sunday giving RNC Chairman Reince Priebus a hard time for how it looks to the public for Republicans to have blocked both the nominations of Elizabeth Warren and the recently recess appointed Richard Cordray to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Priebus’ response of course was to punt on the question and start attacking President Obama instead and Wallace didn’t push him to ever actually give him an answer after his little rant on the recess appointment.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz got a chance to respond and pointed out that while it is true that the Democrats started these pro forma sessions to try to stop some pretty egregious George W. Bush recess appointments, they never used them to do what Republicans are doing now, which is to try to circumvent a department that was voted into law from even being capable of functioning and that Wallace’s points about them protecting the wealthy were spot on.
Regardless of how things iron out in the courts over the recess appointments, it’s not a good day for Republicans when even Chris Wallace is pointing out that you’re looking out for the rich and don’t care about protecting Americans from predatory lenders.

President Obama visits Cleveland home of William and Endia Eason, walks away with sweet potato and peach pies

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Some people might have baked a cake if they knew the president of the United States was coming for a visit.
Endia Eason baked a pie — actually, 23 of them.
President Obama stopped at the Holborn Avenue home of Eason and her husband, William, Wednesday afternoon to bolster his argument that the country needs a strong watchdog agency to protect consumers. The Easons almost lost their Cleveland home after falling victim to a predatory lender.
Obama was joined during the 20-minute visit by Richard Cordray, former Ohio Attorney General who was appointed by the president as head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Deonna Kirkpatrick, communications director for Empowering and Strengthening Ohio’s People, a local housing advocacy group that helped get the Easons out of debt.
The Easons, who bought their home in 1971, were told by the city in 2001 that their front steps violated city code and needed to be repaired. Kirkpatrick said a predatory lender told the Easons that if they didn’t take out an $8,000 loan to make repairs, they would go to jail.
Kirkpatrick said the repairs were never done, the loan was flipped multiple times, and the Easons were suddenly $80,000 in debt. With ESOP’s help, the mortgage broker’s company wrote off part of the loan and backed off on foreclosure.
Obama “told them they were taken advantage of when they thought they were doing the right thing, and he said what happened to them, he doesn’t want to see happen to others,” Kirkpatrick said.
Endia Eason, 91, who once ran a home bakery, baked Obama two pies – one sweet potato and one peach – and made 21 others, including cherry pies for the president’s staff and secret service agents.
“Ms. Eason makes a really good sweet potato pie,” Obama said later in his speech at Shaker Heights High School. “I’m going to eat it later. I didn’t want to eat it before because I didn’t want to get sleepy having a big piece of pie” before the speech.
Others in the Obama entourage had no qualms eating them.
“Those agents and staff people kept thanking me for the pies,” Endia Eason said. “I’m glad they enjoyed them.”
William Eason, an 81-year-old retired post office worker and former boxer while in the Marines, was brought home from a nursing home where he has been staying.
“I was honored the president visited our home,” he said. “It was awesome, like a fortune came to town. He was so understanding and acted just like a father.”
“He said he doesn’t want hard-working Americans like us getting taken for a ride,” Endia Eason said. “I just wish he had been here years ago.”
