First Lady Michelle Obama rejects the ‘angry black woman’ stereotype

The Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) — First lady Michelle Obama is challenging assertions she has forcefully imposed her will on White House aides and says people have inaccurately tried to portray her as “some kind of angry black woman.”

Mrs. Obama tells CBS News she has not read New York Times reporter Jodi Kantor’s new book that characterizes her as a behind-the-scenes force in the Executive Mansion, whose strong views often draw her into conflict with President Barack Obama’s top advisers.

“I never read these books,” she told CBS’s Gayle King in an interview broadcast Wednesday. “So I’ve just gotten in the habit of not reading other people’s impressions of people.”

Wonder what would happen if they preformed the doll test in 2011 with little boys and girls of all races now?

  2. Ametia says:

WTF is Chris Matthews doing interviewing Joan Walsh and Ed Rendell about that trashy book about our FLOTUS. Interview average AMERICANS. ASK US WHAT WE THINK AND HOW WE FEEL ABOUT OUR BEAUTIFUL, BLACK FIRST LADY.

The “CLOSER” AKA FLOTUS is too threatening to the haters. These folks will never, ever, vote for PBO or like our First Lady, Michelle Obama, so FUGG’EM!

    • Speak on it! Michelle stated to Gayle King there will always be someone who doesn’t like her no matter what. Phuck’em.

Damn right I’m going to vote for them. We need them in that White House for another 4 years. The haters can KMBA!

  3. “Michelle” Excerpt from Melissa Harris-Perry’s Sister Citizen

Following the announcement of her new MSNBC show, starting in February, Melissa Harris-Perry appeared on Comedy Central’s Colbert Report this Monday to discuss her book, Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America, addressing the four common stereotyped characters that shape African American women’s identities and how they affect women’s place in society

Of the four stereotypes—Jezebel, Mammy, Sapphire, and the strong black woman—it’s Sapphire, the “angry black woman,” that has come up this week with the release of Jodi Kantor’s The Obamas. Already Michelle Obama has spoken with Gayle King on “CBS This Morning” to address misperceptions about her role in her husband’s White House; she’s tired of being portrayed as “some angry black woman.” “Michelle,” the final chapter of Harris-Perry’s book, looks at the First Lady as today’s best-known example of an African American woman trying to stand straight in a “crooked room,” which Harris-Perry uses as a central theme throughout to describe this disorientation that is both political and personal.

In addition to the “Crooked Room” we’re releasing a free section—“Sapphire and Michelle’s Marriage” — that goes straight to the repeated comparisons and mentions of Michelle Obama as a dominating and overpowering force behind her husband. Read it here and learn why Sister Citizen is “written for the benefit of all Americans – sister citizens, brother citizens and anyone else who cares about the way this country works.”

    First Lady Michelle Obama

“Who can write about how I feel? Who? What third person can tell me how I feel?”

  6. I’m sure by now ya’ll have heard about the Chirpstory on how several bloggers over at Pragmaticobotsunited.com called out Mediate this morning for its lying tweet that said FLOTUS blamed POTUS for her “angry black woman” label.
Check out the play-by-play at Chirpstory; it’s a sight to behold: “Mediate is WHOLLY to blame for Lying on Michelle Obama” http://chirpstory.com/li/3784

We’ve got to stick together like this and keep calling these mofos out for their lazy but rootless reporting when it comes to the Obamas. BTW, Mediate eventually changed the tweet and its headline and even later apologized. NYTimes also changed its headline on the story.

Educated black people like her and Pres. O, always scares the others(wht ppl). They feel like they have to streotypes us.

    • These stereotype ignoramus clowns need to deal with their own insecurties. There is help available.

    • Churchlady320 says:

That would be true. Strong women of any race take it in the neck, but Black women get it worst of all. I as a white woman find Mrs. Obama to be a standard bearer for women everywhere as a bright, articulate, caring, warm and BRILLIANT human being. Too bad if some people feel threatened – she wears the mantle of First Lady with grace, ease, and significance, giving us important programs on health and wellness from which everyone can benefit. I LOVE HER! The book seeks scandal – but after Watergate, Iran-Contra, lies driving us into war – have they FREAKING LOST THEIR MINDS? Even if she expressed herself strongly – so what? I simply doubt it really happened. Mrs. Obama rocks. She’s one of the best First Ladies I’ve ever seen.

  8. The haters are going after Michelle because they know she’s the closer! Do your thing, Flotus! Reel them in.
