The Apollo Theater in New York City is one of the oldest and most famous music halls in the United States, and the most famous club associated almost exclusively with African-American performers. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places,[2] and was the home of Showtime at the Apollo, a nationally syndicated television variety show consisting of new talent.
The theater is located at 253 W. 125th Street in the New York City borough of Manhattan, specifically in Harlem, one of the United States’ most historically significant traditionally African-American neighborhoods.

Margaret, I really thought Rick Perry would do so much better. It appears, however, that outside of Texas – the great state that gave us George W. Bush – Rick Perry can’t get above 10 percent. Worse yet, he can’t even get a little love from Jesus himself. Rick Perry was going to be the Tim Tebow of the Republican Primary only to be surprised that Jesus loves Tom Brady more than Tim Tebow. And then to throw salt in the wound, Rick has to find out that Christians gathered in his own backyard to determine that Jesus likes Rick Santorum more than Rick Perry. I hear, however, that the vote was close. I guess when it comes to impressing Jesus with how much you hate homosexuals and Planned Parenthood, the Santorum Rick just edges out the Perry Rick. But then Newt had to come along, a guy so religious that he’s been a Lutheran, a Southern Baptist and now a Catholic. I guess he lets his wives pick out his religion along with his ties. And if you are going to make this about Jesus then little things like the number of wives you divorced in a hospital bed becomes relevant.

Occupy movement goes to Harlem, screws up completely.

Ever since the Occupy movement decided to start protesting President Obama’s fundraisers, I’ve been saying that I didn’t think this was a good idea. Well, I had a bit more choice words, but I digress. The point is that I didn’t see what possible good could come of attacking President Obama’s core base of support at their gathering points, while curiously allowing Mitt Romney to pass in and out of town for his fundraisers unscathed. Well, that very thing just happened this week.
If Mitt Romney is trying to shed his image as an out-of-touch banker, yesterday did not help. On the same day the GOP frontrunner revealed that he pays a much lower tax rate than many middle-class Americans, the founder and CEO of the world’s largest private equity fund hosted Romney and a select group of other financial elites for a top-dollar fundraiser and strategy session at his ultra-posh Manhattan home.
To illustrate the point, Mitt Romney was here this week at Steven Schwarzman’s home, the CEO of the powerful private equity firm Blackstone Group. Romney was at Scharzman’s swank apartment building at 740 Park Avenue where David Koch also happens to live. Oh, did I mention John Thain also lives there too? As well as John Paulsen? Yes…740 Park Avenue is one of the most “chock-full-o-bankers” buildings in Manhattan. It was a private equity orgy of rich bankers plotting even more diabolical schemes with Mitt Romney as their front man.
You’ll remember that it was Schwarzman who said this:
“It’s a war,” Schwarzman said of the struggle with the administration over increasing taxes on private-equity firms. “It’s like when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939.”
That’s what he said of President Obama’s proposal to close the carried-interest loophole, which I wrote about in April of last year. It is that very loophole that cause Mitt Romney’s tremendous wealth to be taxed at a super low 15%. Yeah…Schwarzman said that having to pay a normal rate as earned income is the same thing as being overrun by Hitler. I think there is some sort of rule on that that eludes me at the moment.

ATLANTA — A judge has ordered President Barack Obama to appear in court in Atlanta for a hearing on a complaint that says Obama isn’t a natural-born citizen and can’t be president.
It’s one of many such lawsuits that have been filed across the country, so far without success. A Georgia resident made the complaint, which is intended to keep Obama’s name off the state’s ballot in the March presidential primary.
An Obama campaign aide says any attempt to involve the president personally will fail and such complaints around the country have no merit.
The hearing is set for Thursday before an administrative judge. Deputy Chief Judge Michael Malihi on Friday denied a motion by the president’s lawyer to quash a subpoena that requires Obama to show up.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 19 (UPI) — Tax experts say U.S. GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney’s individual retirement account has so much money in it he faces a big tax bite when he takes it out.
The former Massachusetts governor’s individual retirement account is estimated to be worth $20.7 to $101.6 million, and estate planning experts say it is highly unusual for someone to accumulate so much money in an IRA, which is restricted by annual contribution caps.
Romney’s IRA grew so large because it holds investments in Bain Capital LLC, the private-equity firm Romney helped found, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday.

Former Rep. Bob Livingston, of Louisiana, addressed a small crowd in Charleston on Friday, acting as a surrogate and supporter of the former House speaker. Livingston was gently breaking the news that Gingrich would not be speaking to the group after all. Asked by reporters why Gingrich was a no-show, Livingston was surprisingly candid.
“Newt is volatile, to say the least,” he said — not the optimal endorsement for a presidential candidate who has been assailed by his Republican rivals as a chaotic and disorganized leader.
Gingrich canceled an event Friday morning and avoided talking with reporters after his second wife, Marianne Gingrich, said in an interview with ABC News that Gingrich confessed to a six-year affair with a congressional aide and then asked her to engage in an “open marriage” so that he could keep his mistress. The former mistress is now his third wife, Callista Gingrich.

WASHINGTON — The former Republican chairman who oversaw his party’s takeover of the House of Representatives in 2010 thinks the Democrats could turn the tables this year.
To win the majority in the last election, the GOP needed 39 seats and won 63. This year, the Democrats need 25, and former Republican National Committee chief Michael Steele said Friday that they may do it, especially with President Barack Obama running hard and a potentially weak GOP contender at the top of the ticket.
“Twenty-five seats is not a lot,” Steele said on MSNBC.
Joe Biden said those supporting Pres Obama are “backing the right guy.” He said Pres Obama “has a backbone like a rail-rod.”

‘The real streets of America’

As the Republican presidential field shrinks to just four candidates, we’re left with four experienced contenders, all of whom can fairly be characterized as political professionals.
But only one of the four has never held office in Washington: Mitt Romney. He’s tried to serve in D.C. — running for the Senate in 1994 and for president in 2008 — but so far, voters haven’t been inclined to send him to the nation’s capital.
The former governor appears eager to use this distinction to his advantage. Consider this line from last night:
“[W]e need to send to Washington someone who has not lived in Washington, but someone who’s lived in the real streets of America…. We need to have someone outside Washington go to Washington.” [emphasis added]
Seriously? Romney’s from “the real streets”?
I’m sure there’s a very nice street that leads to his $12 million oceanfront mansion in California (the one Romney is quadrupling in size). The street is also no doubt lovely on the way to the $10 million home in New Hampshire and his townhouse in Belmont, Mass.
There’s also a perfectly nice street on the way to the nearby mansion, where one of Romney’s sons lives, and where Romney was registered to vote as recently as last year, as well as the $5 million ski chalet in an exclusive area in Utah, which Romney sold in 2010.
When Romney boasts about having lived in “the real streets,” are these the streets he’s referring to?
Perhaps he was referring to his more modest upbringing — when he lived with his father, who served as governor of Michigan and chairman and CEO of American Motors?
If Romney wants to present himself as a Washington outsider, fine. But maybe he can spare us the talk about his background in “the real streets of America.”

Supreme Court strikes down Texas map

This is a ruling that will have an important impact on House races later this year.
The Supreme Court on Friday instructed a lower court in Texas to take a fresh look at election maps it had drawn in place of a competing set of maps from the Texas Legislature. The justices said the lower court had not paid enough deference to the Legislature’s choices and had improperly substituted its own values for those of elected officials.
The court’s unanimous decision extends the uncertainty surrounding this major voting-rights case, which could help determine control of the House of Representatives.
“To avoid being compelled to make such otherwise standardless decisions,” the Supreme Court’s unsigned decision said, “a district court should take guidance from the state’s recently enacted plan in drafting an interim plan. That plan reflects the state’s policy judgments on where to place new districts and how to shift existing ones in response to massive population growth.”
When the legislature drew its map, officials, not surprisingly, went out of their way to help Republican candidates. A special three-judge federal court said those district lines were discriminatory and drew a fairer map, intended to increase the voting power of Texas’ growing Hispanic population.
The result was a map that likely would have given Democrats at least four additional U.S. House seats, just from the Lone Star State, and in a competitive cycle, that increased the odds of Democrats reclaiming a House majority. Today’s Supreme Court ruling rejected that map.
The process is not yet over — it’s now unclear where Texas’ lines will be for 2012 races — but the high court’s unanimous decision will no doubt come as a relief to Republicans.

Romney faces DNC heat over Cayman accounts

The Democratic National Committee sent a press release to reporters last night with an interesting image:
For those who can’t quite make it out, there’s a tropical beach on the left, alongside a parody of Mitt Romney’s official campaign logo. The words “Believe in America” have been replaced by “Believe in the Cayman Islands.”
The point wasn’t subtle. We learned this week that Romney has international investments, including money in the Cayman Islands, and tax experts told the Wall Street Journal Romney’s strategy is likely intended to help him pay less in taxes. It may help explain, among other things, why Romney has been so eager to keep his tax returns hidden from the public.
And so Dems are hitting him over the head with the story. In addition to the mocked up logo, the DNC unveiled this new video overnight.
Pay particular attention to the steel drums playing “America the Beautiful” towards the end of the clip.
I suspect this will come up again as the campaign progresses. As we talked about yesterday, even if we assume the typical voter doesn’t know or care about the nuances of offshore banking strategies, I suspect when the American mainstream hears “guy who stashes cash in the Caymans,” questions about trust necessarily follow.

Obama’s correct call on contraception coverage

In August, the Obama administration announced some very good news: thanks to the Affordable Care Act, and following the recommendations of the National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine, contraception would be covered by insurance plans as preventive care.
The health care reform law already requires insurers to cover “preventive health services” for free, but the announcement was part of a process that defines what those services will include. According to Health and Human Services, insurers would be required to cover not only contraception, but also HPV testing, breastfeeding support and supplies, and domestic violence screening and counseling.
The news generated an intense lobbying campaign from Roman Catholic bishops and other religious leaders, pushing the administration to curtail the scope of the coverage. As of November, there was a fair amount of talk that Obama’s team might cave on this.
I’m pleased to report that didn’t happen. Religious-affiliated hospitals got a delay, but the administration denied their push for an exemption.
Most healthcare plans will be required to cover birth control without charging co-pays or deductibles starting Aug. 1, the Obama administration announced Friday.
The final regulation retains the approach federal health officials proposed last summer, despite the deluge of complaints from religious groups and congressional Republicans that has poured in since then. Churches, synagogues and other houses of worship are exempt from the requirement, but religious-affiliated hospitals and universities only get a one-year delay and must comply by Aug. 1, 2013.
“This decision was made after very careful consideration, including the important concerns some have raised about religious liberty,” Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement. “I believe this proposal strikes the appropriate balance between respecting religious freedom and increasing access to important preventive services.”
The Obama administration deserves a lot of credit for doing the right thing, especially given the lobbying push. Jessica Arons, the director of the Women’s Health and Rights Program at the Center for American Progress, called this move “a huge victory for women’s health.” She wasn’t the only one praising the decision.

Catholic leaders issued a letter Friday to GOP presidential candidates Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, themselves Catholics, urging them “to stop perpetuating ugly racial stereotypes on the campaign trail.”
The letter, signed by 45 Catholic leaders says:
Mr. Gingrich has frequently attacked President Obama as a “food stamp president” and claimed that African Americans are content to collect welfare benefits rather than pursue employment. Campaigning in Iowa, Mr. Santorum remarked: “I don’t want to make black people’s lives better by giving them somebody else’s money.”
“At a time when nearly 1 in 6 Americans live in poverty, charities and the free market alone can’t address the urgent needs of our most vulnerable neighbors. And while jobseekers outnumber job openings 4-to-1, suggesting that the unemployed would rather collect benefits than work is misleading and insulting,” the letter adds.

Getting back on topic, former Republican candidate Herman Cain said he was not amused by Carter’s comments. “I usually don’t get this intense: That is ridiculous. When they talk about coded words,” he said, “that’s talking about race. Take race out of it. It has nothing to do with it.”
Fellow panelist Roland Martin disagreed, pointing out that it was Gingrich who made race an issue by specifically mentioning the NAACP.
South Carolina’s Rep. Tim Scott and O’Brien then spoke over one another in voicing their disagreement over what, exactly, Gingrich had said. “I won’t talk over you because you’re a lovely woman,” said Scott.
“I know,” she replied. “It’s my show, though. I’ve got to get a point in occasionally.”

Obama Raises At Least $3 Million In Manhattan

President Barack Obama’s quick jaunt to Manhattan Thursday netted his re-election bid at least $3 million.
“If you keep on believing, we’ll finish what we started in 2008. Change will come. If you fight with me and press on with me, I promise you change will come,” said Obama.
The biggest event was at the Apollo Theater.
He kept to his stump speech themes: the economy is better, but not good enough.
“I am here tonight not just because I need your help, I’m here because your country needs your help,” said Obama.
The familiar street closures were in effect when he spoke to three Upper East Side audiences, the last at director Spike Lee’s home.
Lee’s wasn’t the only famous face there.
Singer Mariah Carey and retired knick Allan Houston also ponied up for the nearly $36,000-per-ticket event.
At the Apollo, actor Lin Manuel Miranda emceed. Also on hand were singers Al Green and India Arie.
As for regular New Yorkers, many greeted the president as an adopted son, even with the traffic chaos his motorcade unleashed.
“We are excited, my sister and I together. We went down to the inauguration. It was freezing, freezing, freezing cold and here we are again,” said one New Yorker.
“He needs four more years,” said another.
Obama also attracted a small gaggle of Occupy Wall Street protesters, who say he’s compromised too much.
They were easily outnumbered by his supporters.

Obama Administration holds to birth control insurance rule, but gives religious groups more time to comply

The Obama administration will allow religious organizations a one-year delay before they must comply with a new rule requiring employers that offer workers health insurance to include access to contraception with no out-of-pocket cost, according to people familiar with the decision.
But the rule itself, and the employers covered by it, remain unchanged. This is likely to disappoint religious groups such as the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, which had lobbied hard for a permanent exemption for employers that consider birth control a violation of their religious beliefs. Women’s advocates greeted the decision with relief, because they had feared the administration was planning to significantly broaden the original exemption.

— – — -*Michelle Obama will follow up her “iCarly” appearance with a visit to Jay Leno’s stage later this month.
NBC announced today that the first lady will appear on “The Tonight Show” on Jan. 31, where she’s expected to talk about life in the White House, her fitness initiative for children and her upcoming book about the White House kitchen garden.
She was a guest on the program in 2008 when her husband was a candidate and also appeared via satellite hookup from the White House on “The Jay Leno Show” in 2009, the host’s gig before returning to “The Tonight Show.”
The “CLOSER” is making the rounds. The HATERS can’t shut down the goodness of FLOTUS. Love it!

While the Republican candidates for president duked it out in South Carolina at Thursday night’s debate, current President Barack Obama commanded the stage at Harlem’s famed Apollo Theater, and in the spirit of the venue, briefly showed the crowd his Crooner-in-Chief skills with a soulful rendition of Rev. Al Green‘s “Let’s Stay Together” that was good enough, as the President noted, to avoid the Sandman’s hook.
Of course, he only sang a (perhaps SOPA-conscious?) eight-second snippet of Green’s classic quiet storm, so there wasn’t much time for the crowd to turn against him, but I think he definitely left them wanting more. Say what you will about the President, but singing “Let’s Stay Together” at the Apollo Theater, with Al Green in the room, takes more balls than a bowling alley.

It was “showtime” at the Apollo Thursday as President Barack Obama showed off his singing chops during a fundraiser at the legendary Harlem theater, breaking into a few bars of the Al Green classic, “Let’s Stay Together.”
The Apollo was the third stop in a trio of New York fundraisers for the president’s re-election campaign, starting with a pair of events at Daniel Restaurant on Manhattan’s upper east side, followed by a $35,000 per ticket soiree at Spike Lee’s house, and finally, the Apollo Theater concert and fundraiser, which included performances by neo-soul artist India.Arie, and Green.
Following the performances, Obama took the stage, saying” “it’s good to know that the Reverend Al Green was here…” and then letting loose with the first few bars of Green’s hit song. After the president sang “I … I’m so in love with you…” the audience cheered, and the president looked off stage, presumably to his staff, saying: “those guys didn’t think I would do it! I told you I was gonna do it! And the Sandman did not come out.”
